Common where they live, or what ch communities are built around something people have in common, where they live or what school or church they attend. But our next s about a community that has grown out of a highway that people drive, and the gesture of thanks they showed this past weekend. Garvin thomas groins us with this one of a kind party in todays bay area proud. Erin is a nanny by trade. Twins are her specialty. Shes pretty good at handling stress, but this last winters weather really tested her patience. But she handled it with such grace, she had plenty left over to share with others. Erin is one of those people who has been doing the same commute for so long, she measures her daily routine in terms of years. 18. Yeah, a long time. 18 years. Commuting from santa cruz to the south bay and back again. Each trip braving the twists and turns of perhaps the bay areas most notorious stretch of highway. Number 17. Which this past winter managed to exceed even its outside reputation. Certainly out of all this time, this year was the worst, by far. Mudslides, fallen trees, and oh, so many accidents. I think i was stuck in pretty much every time there was a long, long time. So a few hours just silting in the car. Yesterday was just a terrible commute. It would be enough to frustrate even the most patient of drivers, but not erin. For if there is such a thing as the opposite of road rage, that is what was growing in her. It began, she says, while watching emergency and road crews fighting against nature to keep the road open and safe. Theyre in their rain jackets and pouring rain. And theyre there all night. They have the lights set up. Huge equipment. And i just thought, wow, i wish i could say thank you to those guys. You know, certainly not safe to get out of your car and actually do that. So i thought, well, i wonder if theres something i can do for them. Throw them a party is what erin came up with. Youre going to get your free lunch, free beer. This past sunday at sky park in scotts valley, erin and a team of fellow commuters welcomed anyone who had a role in keeping traffic moving on highway 17 to take off their reflective vests and pick up a plate, or grab a beer, or get a massage. Dozens took her up on her gracious offer. Magnificent, yeah. I want them to feel like, wow, this community appreciates what i do. And if that was ultimately the message erin wanted to send, it, like so many drivers this past winter, safely reached its destination. Thanks for coming. Thanks for all your help with it. The work on highway 17 over the winter wasnt just difficult. It was dangerous. One worker died there while working over this past winter. Erins gratitude picnic raised money for a fund to help his family as well. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Still to come on today in the bay, be careful what your dump. Critics of the bill say closing streets doesnt address the issue effectively. These days, a road trip across the country isnt all that unusual. But it certainly was back in 1903. Today in the bays joe rosato jr. Has the story of a bay area man who broke new ground with that journey and why some are now remembering him. Ive been riding a might for 48 years. Thats my passion. To some, the is just a path to somewhere else. But to others, its something to conquer. I like to ride long distances on motorcycles. Jim has repeatedly crossed the country end to end on just two wheels. You get a sense of vulnerability. Every time he hits the road, hes riding in the tracks laid by george wyman, more than a century ago. Well, george wyman is americas forgotten trailblazer. 1903, wyman, an oakland mechanic who also raced bicycles, set his sights on a much longer journey. In march of 1903, he published he was going to be the first person to ride a motorcycle across the united states. He launched that trip from San Francisco may 16th. At 2 30 in the afternoon on 1903, george a. Wyman left his spot, he followed the trance continental railroad. It was basically a bicycle with a motor. Like most of the world, marty had never heard the story of her great grandfather. I didnt know much about him. The recent discovery of articles he wrote while duming his trip for a motorcycle magazine have shed new light on his trek. He got stuck in mud, thrown off his bike. Took pictures along the way. Wyman arrived to fanfare in new york city on july 6th. Took him 50 days to do it, the first person to ride a motorized vehicle. They were shut from history when the first automobile made the same trip two weeks later. It was completely forgotten. But shine and masterson have set up to finally tell wymans story. They started installing way point signs along his Cross Country path, with hopes of adding bronze plaques at key points, including lots fountain. Our goal is to mark this spot. Its one thing to tell wymans story in words and pictures. Another we believe we have the original motorcycle. This bike was found a garage in california in the 70s. Right next to the front door of his south bay home, collector dave keeps whats believed to be wymans original motorcycle. Its basically a motorcycle with a very small engine on it. Its 200 cc engine, its pedals, the once broken handlebars he at one point replaced with a tree branch, tell of a determined adventurer. I think its a free spirit, said im going to do this, and he achieved it. To masterson, wymans story is best experienced on the road. Near train tracks, dirt roads, and the unfolding america where he quietly forged traveling history. And its a testament to his determination and his gut. Joe rosato jr. We want to know who george a.
