This latest case happened in napa county and isnt related to the botulism outbreak caused by nacho cheese in sacramento county. Pete suratos is joining us live with the symptoms you should be aware of. This is pretty frightening, pete. Good morning. Reporter very frightening indeed, good morning, sam and laura. In that latest case in napa county, the information is very limited. In fact, we dont know what caused the person to catch botulism but in that case earlier this week with that man in antioch we know it was from eating contaminated nacho cheese at a gas station in the sacramento suburb of walnut grove. As far as what botulism is, we know its when foods are not preserved or stored correctly. Speaking to a Public Health official theyre saying you want to wash your fruits and vegetables and store foods accordingly to whats on the back of the labels so read that carefully. As far as the symptoms of botulism, it includes vomiting and diarrhea and even more serious issues. The typical symptom wes see are a progression from paralysis of the muscles in the face down to the chest so blurry vision, double vision, droopy eyelids and then struggling to speak, having trouble swallowing, having Trouble Holding your head and neck up and trouble breathi breathing. Reporter Health Care Officials said botulism is very rare which makes these cases unusual but its treatable and when it comes to botulism, only about 5 of cases are deadly. Back to you in the studio. Its countercommute up toward the University Area in berkeley. We had an earlier crash. I moved our camera there, though. The Speed Sensors are a little slow to catch up. So it was reported at the exit at ashby. The lanes are clear and light traffic going away from the bay bridge again. This should recover quickly on our sensors as well. Well get you to set of sensors, the waze sensors. Three options going from san ramon to san jose. An easy drive but i talked about that slowing off the Castro Valley y. So we have three routes listed here. The blue one takes you to the Castro Valley y, thats 90 minutes, the purple one goes to the trivalley and thats a half hour better so were definitively saving you time through this area, you can use waze to plan your best times. Nbc bay area responds to a lake county woman who lost her home in a fire yet was turned over to collections for not paying her dish network bill. Consumer investigator chris chmura joins us now with her story. Chris . Reporter catherine lost her home in the big lake county fire in 2015. She was forced to relocate. But she says she canceled many of her home services, including her dish network as much as but several months later she saw charges on her debit account for dish network service. She also says dish turned her over to collections for nonpayment. Catherine says she called dish and told her story to them but they said no, you only paused your account, you didnt cancel it all together. Catherine says thats not true. She says she pointed out to dish that she has no longer a home or dish equipment and therefore no dish service but she says dish told her that didnt matter so she reached out to us for help. We contacted dish and it refunded 229, the amount it had charged her after her home burned. It contacted the Credit Bureaus to restore her credit. Kris sanchez joins with us the big developments wekts s we see today. Reporter the courthouse will open in a few hours and all along the Santa Clara District Attorneys Office has said this is not exclusively about the death of one inmate but about an abuse of power within the system. They will deliberate whether jereh lubrin, Rafael Rodriguez and Matthew Ferris beat a bipolar inmate to death. The three could get a life sentence if the jury finds they did. Michael tyree was found dead in his cell in august of 2015. The coroner said his mean was nearly ruptured in two. The three are also chavrjed with the assault under color of authority of juan villa, a second mentally ill inmate the same night. The defense claims tyree died from injuries he inflicted upon himself. During the trial, some former inmates testified they saw the deputies in tyrees cell and they heard tyree crying for help. The defense contends the testimony of those i mates is not to be truthed because they have their own motivation in giving it. The courthouse will open in a bit, no cameras are allowed in but we will have an nbc bay area reporter inside. As soon as the verdict is red, we will have it for you. In san jose, christian saykris y in the bay. Developing this morning, an east Bay Community coming together to support the camfami of a nineyearold boy shot in the stomach on his birthday. A bullet hit isai catalan when they were walking their puppy in east oakland. The family was walking to a nearby store following his birthday celebration. Police are trying to determine why the shots were fired. Investigators at this point believe the nineyearold boy was not the intended target of that shooting. This is one of those moments where its super important that we as a team help each other out. The Boys Soccer Team oakland fc leopards is also helping. This is the second bay area person to have died from that rare disease. Investigators arent releasing many details about the napa case but we know its not related to the outbreak of the botulism coming from nacho cheese sauce at a sacramento area gas station. An antioch father died from that outbreak this month. Botulism is caused by tainted food and symptoms can be face paralysis, blurry vision, and difficulty breathing and in rare cases death. 6 45 right now. We have new details on the person shot and killed outside a south bay Fast Food Restaurant last week. San jose police say 38yearold george garza of san jose pronounced dead after being shot last thursday near a weaner snits l. So far police have made no arrests in the case and being tightlipped about any suspect information. San joses downtown greyhound station has been there for almost six decades but its last ride is just around the corner. Yesterday the City Council Approved two highrise towers to be constructed on that site. Greyhound left the location last may. Youre looking at artist renderings of the highrises.
