Another wave approaching pleasanton. Still looking at more rain in the forecast as we go through the day. We will talk about the potential of a slight chance of thunderstorms today. Thats coming up in the microclimate forecast. Now mike tracks a lot of on the roadways. Some of them sticking around because we had the mudslide. Traffic is still flowing both directions. We had that flooding for highway 37. And the wet roadways. Still highlighting green around the bay. Be careful there. Green sensors around most of your commute. Friday, a lighter drive. This justed through mountain view, north 101. A spinout reported. Thats only the second for the morning. Lighter traffic. No injuries reported. Should be off to the shoulder. Because of the slick conditions, be careful out there as well no problem toward the bay bridge. Southbound 880 through hayward, passing highway 92 continuing to the dumbarton. Back to you. We are continuing to watch a problem in the north bay that continues to surface. Team coverage this morning. Flooding a major issue for the Russian River and the north bay. Today in the bay pete suratos live along the relative to tell us when we can expect the river to actually hit its highest level. Good morning, pete. Reporter yeah. Good morning to you, laura and sam. We aring the river to hit 35. 7 feet around 1 00 p. M. That put it a few feet above where you consider the flood stages. There are evacuations for folks along the Russian River. Sonoma county operated its emergency evacuation center. Yesterday there was no water at all. The level is about 34 feet. It could increase as the river continues to crest a little bit later on. They have evacuated the Emergency Operation center. We should see flooding in the lowlying areas of guerneville. And also monte rio along the old bohemian highway. Officials want to get this information out to residents. Thats first to look out for road closures today which could depend on the ongoing weather conditions. Pg e fully stopped here in this area. If theres any chance for flash flooding in the area, move immediately to higher ground. Shelters have been set up at the guerneville Veterans Memorial building. It will crest around 1 00 p. M. Today. The home owner said the mud started to seep through his house Tuesday Morning he was able to get out of the house. Most of his most valuable possessions were destroyed. My wall et. My hard drive with all the kids photos. So sad there. Housing officials redtagged the home. Now neighbors are worried the same slide could move possibly into one of their homes. So we have some moisture still were rolling through this morning with the last a little bit of this atmospheric river. The area of low pressure is still to the north. It is still spinning these lines of showers and possibly thunderstorms for the bay area later on today. We still see the system winding and moving towards the east. Heavy rain moving through parts of the trivalley, making things wet again on the roadways. If youre getting out early this morning, still encountering some of the showers in parts of pleasanton, livermore, antioch right now. Thats where the heaviest rain is moving through. Elsewhere, lingering light showers. As we go into this afternoon, still a line of showers. A few more breaks in between. He was not ticketed for that but he was cited for not having his insurance with him. He got a fixit ticket paying 25 fine later, as long as you show proof of insure. He tried to do that but ran into road blocks. The court had computer problems and the wrong address on the ticket. It ballooned into a 1200 fine and collection fee. I was sort of shocked. This is a live look from Anderson Reservoir in morgan hill. Officials are trying to lower the water because of the danger if an earthquake hit. A live report from bob coming up. A live look from san jose where creeks are overflowing where they dont typically cause city streets to flood. A live look at the Russian River in the north bay. Its been a busy one this week. Watching the river levels going back down and sunshine too. But we still have to get through rounds of rain and before this storm system gets out of here. This is what drivers are having to deal w. Low visibility with patchy fog. And theres the rain on the radar right now moving through the south bay as well as the east bay. Still mist and drizzle elsewhere just to keep things pretty soggy. A look at san jose. The rain starting to clear there. And for the trivalley, a very soggy morning commute over towards antioch and the delta as well. Watch the speeds. Be careful. In the north bay, we have the flood. Highway 37 closed between atherton and 101. Also continuing for folks. The closure of the area. Metering lights are on. Traffic flowing between Granite Creek is and fivine hill. This is mud. You guys are talking about water. Ill hand it back to you. The recent rain storms may be good for the droughts. All the rain could have a major impact on communities. Workers are having a hard time keeping water levels low. Bob, good morning. Good morning, sam and laura. It is intimidating standing next to the flood gate at the bottom of the anderson dam. Youre looking at 400 cubic feet per Second Coming out of the reservoir into coyote creek. Santa clara Water District is releasing this because there is too much in the reservoir. There are seismic concerns about the dam being vulnerable to an earthquake. If there was a large earthquake, a magnitude 7. 25 or greater nearby, that the dam, anderson dam here in morgan hill could be damaged. They think it is highly unlikely it would fail. At that point they determined that the capacity of the reservoir should never go above 68 . Its well above 68 right now because of the recent rains we have been having and the forecasted storms way. So they have opened them to try to relieve pressure on the dam. There is so much water that at times during the storm there has been on even more rain. A lot of water, 400 cubic feet per second. Their projection is it will take four to nine weeks before they were able to get the reservoir down to 68 . That just illustrates how much water is in there. You can imagine downstream over the next month there will be flooding concerns. If youre not familiar with the anderson dam, it was built in 1950 using 1950 or probably late 40s engineering standards. So it is an older dam. It is something that they use here for their water supply in the south bay. It is essential. Construction started to 2020 with completion projected for 2024. Now that we have sunlight, you can see how big it is in relation to where we are at. They want to get it seismically retrofit. That is a lot of water going downstream in the bay they cant use for irrigation or for peoples homes. You can find us on nbcbayarea. Com and facebook as well. I have to say in all of my years of reporting here, i have never been alongside this creek. I cant recall the last time it flood. Though there was a little bit of flooding back in 2015. Were on one side of it. The crews looking to pump it are all the way on the other side. This is usually just a little creek. It is an amazing sight to see. You can see it is rushing over its banks. It happened about midnight. And crews have been here on scene since. The creek is flowing over mabry road near educational park drive. It was shut down in one direction. The traffic is disrupted to north king road. Now they are waiting for floodwaters to run their course because there is nowhere to pump the water. Santa clara valley spent money on the creek doing bank repairs and removing trees. It is a sight to see. This is a popular spot for folks who walk, cyclists as well. Folks might be heading out into this area. If you aring out along with penitencia creek, be careful because they a waters are rushi a massive mudslides continue to take a toll on commuters. Highway 17 shut down after tuesdays mudslide. The cleanup effort took a tragic and fatal turn yesterday. This morning, friends, family, and coworkers are remembering a construction worker who was killed on the job. On the granite Rock Construction website, 54yearold robert gill is being remembered. A dump truck backed up and hit him and he was killed instantaneously. There will be a u curing site launched by friends and family trying to raise money for gills family. He had been a member of that company for 15 years. At the same time, another worker, 34yearold Steven Whittier was pinned under the truck. Though he was able to speak with responders who came on scene afterwards. He is expected to survive. Really rainy conditions yesterday. So sad. Another look at the bay area the Russian River in the north bay. It is expected to crest its banks early this afternoon. As we have been telling you on today in the bay, the river is already overflowing its banks in several spots. Lets get a check of conditions with kari hall as you step out the door on your friday. An umbrella, kari . Yes. As well as a jacket. It is a little bit milder for the south bay. The cold front is rolling on through. With that we still have lingering moisture. With that you are going to need definitely the umbrella, a heavier jacket. As you get the kids ready for the bus stop, umbrella and rain boots. It may not be raining where you are at the time, there may be a chance. Clothes you dont mind getting muddy for recess. Cool with breezy winds and a few lingering showers. We will talk about the look ahead in 10 minutes. And soggy south bay commute for the drivers. Like you said, not every single driver will get so soggy. The volume of traffic starting to build now for highway 87, 85, and 101. Let me show you the live shot. Heres 101 north of 680. Look the water still kicking up. Travel times through the south bay. This comes after a phone call between our president and theirs last night. To understand why this is a big deal you have to understand the facts of americas one china policy. Two once with different capitals, aefrplcapital capitals, different armys. China and taiwan. Beijing and taipei. We will defend taiwan but we dont say it. In the olympics nobody said taiwan. In december, then president elect took a call from the president of taiwan. Diplomats said that was a huge mistake. The president isnt even supposed to talk to the president of taiwan. Trump asked why in the world not. He said he would have a new policy. Here he is explaining it to fox news. I fully understand the one china policy. I dont know why we have to be bound by a one china policy unless we make a deal with china. The big question, why did President Trump change his policy . Did he get a deal, or did diplomats convince him this was the best way to handle china . And very important to Silicon Valley is about the promise to slap all chinese products including the iphone with a 35 tariff. We dont know any of these answers. The next round of rain moves into the north bay between 3 00 and 4 00. Once again, that will be the time when we could see thunder and lightning. I know youre looking ahead to this weekend.
