Chances are youve noticed health score cards hanging up in restaurants akrcross san francio from 1 to 100 giving customers an idea how clean or dirt they restaurant was when Health Inspectors popped in for a surprise visit. Restaurants live with that score up to a year until their next surprise inspection. Now were learning some restaurants can pay to get new scores. In a city known for its cuisine, earning a poor health score can be a Scarlet Letter for restaurants across San Francisco. But now a little known program is allowing some restaurants to wipe away their dirty health record. If businesses can whitewash reputations by paying for new scores then the whole process breaks down and consumers lose that information. Reporter Vincent Toledo is a Senior Vice President at yelp. The website and app provides reviews and posting Current Health scores for restaurants. Why the company urged San Francisco months ago to cancel its new Pilot Program allowing some of the worst rated restaurants to pay for a brand new health score and inspection. When they didnt think anyone was paying attention they werent following the proper hygiene. Thats what consumers really want to know. Dont you want to know whats happening when no ones looking . Reporter a lot of caterers and restaurants in San Francisco. Inspections either once or twice a year. Serious violations have to be corrected or cleaned up for that restaurant to stay opened but stuck with the same health score until their next surprise inspection. Restaurants wait anywhere between six months to a year to earn a new rating. The citys Pilot Program allows restaurants torder up an inspection doover within 30 days. Just pay 191 and their low score is replaced with a brand new one. Its not so simple as theyre going to pay a fee and then just try to get a higher score. This is about changing bad behavior patterns within a food facility. Reporter lisa oh mali is one of three managers who runs San Franciscos restaurant inspection program. She says websites like yelp have made it easy for consumers to find a restaurants bad health score, which is why she says Restaurant Owners pushed San Francisco to offer a rescoring option. If they get a new inspection because theyre going to pay inspectors to come back, that old score is taken down. First of all, theyve earned that score and we do not tell them when were coming. Okay . We dont call sand a, well be here at 2 00 on a friday. We dont do that. Its a surprise inspection. But they know its within 30 days of them paying . Its within approximate 30 days. Reporter thats different than saying its going to be twice a year. It is different, but reporter its more notice. Within a 30day time period. Reporter so it is more notice . It can be. Reporter San Francisco plans to expand the program in the coming weeks, but so far only four restaurants have taken part. All are entire Health Scores after paying for their reinspection including ny china, went from a 63 to a 93. Thats a 30point increase. Farmer brown, a sole Food Restaurant in the tenderloin from a 79 to a 90. Earned 79 after inspectors found rodent droppings throughout the restaurant. No seib of that during their redo inspection. We reached out to both restaurants for comment but have yet to hear back. Of course theyre going to clean up their act when they know someones coming. I want to know, what are they doing when no ones watching. Reporter doesnt this undermine transparency allowing these restaurants to get a brand new score . I dont agree. No. It actually helps the consumer to make an evaluated decision where they want to eat. Reporter the city sees this as a way to be more transparent. Not less. Not sure how that would be. A situation where businesses are trying to pay to avoid being tarred with a bad score. Reporter yelp is using its own platform to wage a food fight against San Francisco. The Company Already posts alerts on the lowest scoring restaurants, yelp will keep those alerts up for six months, even if a restaurant pays to get a new score. Yelp is also urging users to call the department of health to complain about the program. And the companys alert now says, we understand the city recently caved, and now allows restaurants to essentially buy new scores. Well, thats their opinion. We want to protect public health. We want to uphold the Publics Trust were doing our job and we do that through enforcement, through education. Reporter over at yelp headquarters, San Franciscos stance is hard to swallow.
