The controversy over facebooks fake news continues this morning. Facebook setting new policies, but at the same time maintaining the problem isnt widespread. Scott mcgrew, this is all depending on how you measure it. Widespread or not. Facebook defended itself by saying, look, only a very small percentage of the things you see are fake. When you look at how often that very small percentage is shared on facebook, the problem becomes much more apparent. A researcher in vancouver took a look at how often people share fake news article. Not only is this headline misleading, there is no denver guardian, its a fake newspaper. The researcher determined this fake denver article was shared 568,000 times on facebook, more than a half million times. Thats impactful. Kaufield thought, how does that compare to true articles. Well, the Washington Post on the very same day, its most shared story on facebook was shared just 38,000 times. The boston globes spotlight team, the famous spotlight team top shared story, 181 times. So to review, a fake news item is shared more than a half million, Washington Post, 38,000 and on the same day, a real article from the boston globe 181 times. Facebook says the number of fake news items is small, but they get shared. The point here kaufield says theres nothing trivial, rare of fake news on facebook.
