Hes talking about reports that jamaicas Antidoping Agency wasnt testing its athletes for months before the 2012 summer games in london. After those reports emerged, they investigated and director general told the associated press, quote, there was a period where there was no effective operation. No testing. Six months out conty said its a crucial time in the athletes training. They build the speed that carries over at the olympics games. Consider the following facts wada allows countries and sports federations to police themselves on off season testing. Wada recently changed the policies allowing athletes to miss two tests every 12 months without a violation. That might explain a low number of athletes testing positive at the games. The most recent data comes from london 2012 where 5,051 underwent testing and nine tested positive for banned substances. Thats in line with the historical data. These athletes simply do what they have to do in order to be competitive. I dont want to say everyone is doing that. I dont believe that. I think its the overwhelming majority. For the u. S. A highly sought after position that opened up at the capitol for more than two decades. There will be a new u. S. Senator representing california. Larry gur stone joins us live to show us the top candidates vying for the job. Theatts f thpredenalnonatns tha the battle for the president ial nominations of the two Major Political parties have captivated much of the nation. California has its own big contest. A highly prized seat in the u. S. Senate. Larry gerston joins us this morning. Its been a long time since weve seen an opening in the u. S. Senate seat for california. Not since 1992. Not since 1992 at that time Diane Feinstein was elected to fill the last two seats last two years that turn into a seat vacated by pete wilson. Remember him . The seat was held briefly by john seamore, and Barbara Boxer was elected to an open seat sixyear term vacated by alan cranston. These are ancient names in california politics. Most people wont remember them. The retirement creates the first u. S. Senate vacancy in a quarter century. Think about what you were doing in 1992. It was a long time ago. A long time ago. Okay. What do we know about the candidates now and how competitive do you expect this race to be . There seem to be a lot of people in the ring. Everybody but you and me. Okay. On the surface it looks like incredibly competitive. In fact, there are 31 candidates. 31 candidates for the offices. Okay. There are 10 democrats, eight republicans, six thirdparty candidates, eight candidates with no Political Party affiliation. That is the kind of attention this office draws. When theres a vacancy that comes after 26 years. So 31 people but who are the names drawing the most attention . Who has the most support and considered the front runners. I dont know if we can name all 31. I cant. For the democrats state attorney general pamela harris. Not as familiar around here sanchez of california. They clearly dominate the pack. As of january 31st, harris had Something Like 9 million with and sanchez raised 2. 7 million with 2. 1 million in the bank. For the republicans its another story. Doug raised 300,000 with 50i7d,000 in the bank. Sonheim is followed by he raised 180,000 and 140 in the bank. You look at the remaining candidates and were not talking about much. Little or nothing. In fact 18 have raised nothing at all. You have to look at those four. The two democrats the heavy hitters and two republicans not far behind. Were two months away from the june 7th primary. I cant believe that. Who do you think has enough votes to make it to the run off in november . Yeah. First, lets remember one thing. That is that california has what is known as the top two primaries. Some call it the jungle of primary. For all the partisan offices, except for president. What does it mean . It means that the two candidates with the most votes in june will face off in november regardless of their Political Party afttle. As of now, and were two months away, here is how it looks. According to the l. A. Times poll. We see harris is way ahead of sanchez. 9 point lead. Pretty comfortable. Beccaro much farther behind. Downstream you see 7 favoring other candidates. But here is the ticker, vicky, the kicker is that 32 were undecided. Simply put, that means this race is wide open. Still. Theres so much uncertainty left. What should we looking for between now and june 7th . Unwith the factors here, i think three things to look for. First, lets watch the candidate positions on major issues. In, particularly immigration reform, obamacare, taxes, abortion, high speed rail. Those are a few kicking around now in a lot of peoples minds. Second, who was the most successful at fundraising . Fundraising is important. Without money its hard to run a campaign. Third, and perhaps we dont always think about voter turn out. Here is an example. If Hillary Clinton has sewn up the democratic nomination by june and the republicans are still slugging it out, Republican Voters may come out in droves while democrats kind of stay at home because nothing much to talk about. Under that scenario, the outcomes could change dramatically. And that just one possibility. The bottom line is this, with only two months to go, the outcome of this race is anyones guess. And theres not a lot of time left for people to figure it out. And the take away message is if you have a candidate you are particularly supportive of, get out and vote regardless of what is happening maybe in the president ial race. There are other initiatives and races that are important to us locally or staid statewide that matter. Absolutely. And june youre talking about state senate races, congressional races, state assembly races, local races. All kinds of things. Its amazing how human nature works. When a race is sewn up people say maybe its in the process theyre losing a lot of opportunity to vote for many other candidates. Okay. Larry, thank you for your insight and stay with us. Well be right back. Look at this sweet face. So sweet. Ok, were going to need a napkin gooey, flaky, happy. Toaster strudel. I would kill for something sweet. Wanna split that . No. Soooo much fat.
