Crews are still working the tracks this morning. A spokesperson tells us Union Pacific will be running a rail inspection vehicle ahead of all four morning trains to insure the tracks are just fine. The vehicle should go across about a mile ahead. They have never had a mudslide on this part of the tracks indicating trying to prevent this from happening again is nearly unpredictable. We dont know where this could happen and there are pl e places it might again and thats out of our control. Per the usgs, there are 3200 miles of train tracks running through california that should be checked twice a week. Since 2009, usgs has been monitoring four bay area sites, not far from where the niles canyon mudslide happened monday night.
