Coverage from the ground and the air as crews battle a fire at a restaurant in berkeley. Stephanie chuang live with the latest for us. Looks pretty devastating, steph. Were just off the cal campus off of University Avenue where firefighters are on scene now. Theyre climbing up the ladder to make sure there are no hot spots. I just spoke with the firefighters who said, thankfully, theyve been able to knock this two alarm blaze down. It was going pretty badly, though, in the last hour. It broke out about 5 15 this morning. We have chopper video, in fact, that shows just how tall the flames were going. Smoke is now here, but, again, before there were flames here. It was a very active battle. Im looking inside this mandarin garden restaurant here at 2025 shaddock and it looks completely devastated inside. The good news is the firefighter says they were able to pretty much contain the blaze to this building, saving the ones next to it. This is, of course, very crowded here in Downtown Berkeley. So, a concern always is that the fire can spread very quickly. That firefighters were successful in putting this out. Again, right now, they are checking for hot spots and this restaurant, by the way, if you are in the area or from the area, you may recognize it. According to the website, its been here in Downtown Berkeley for more than 30 years and according to the restaurant owners, the largest banquet hall here in the area. So, could be a very devastating for so many people. Again, inside that im looking in back live here and things are still kind of, theres some embers and things falling down so firefighters have to be pretty careful as they make their way around checking for hot spots. But will continue to be here and give you updates next at 7 25. Live here in Downtown Berkeley, Stephanie Chuang, today in the bay. Thank you, steph. Happening now.
