A worldwide ransom world attack that already seized hundreds of thousands of Computer Systems and with a new workweek getting under way the problems are just getting worse. Kelly cobia has the story for us. Kelly, good morning to you. This is far from over. More cyder chaos. Those who are logging on only finding that the virus is still spreading. The cyberattack, unprecedented. This morning carmaker nissan and hitachi struggling. The biggest cyberattack in history started friday. Freezing computers at Britains National Health Service forcing Emergency Rooms across the country to close and even stopping surgeries. The malware known as wannacry causing chaos across the globe. 200,000 systems in 150 countries. Germanys National Rail and the Russian Interior Ministry and fedex in the u. S. Weve seen the rise of ransomware being the principle threat in the last two years but nothing on this scale. Reporter the virus first infects a computer through a bad link in an email and then quickly spreads through an Organizations Network encrypting files and demanding 300,000 in bitcoin. The cyberthieves used a hole in microsoft security that was made public by hackers who stole it from the National Security agency last summer. Over the weekend, this 22yearold British Cyberresearcher, known as malware tech says he accidentally found a kill switch for the virus. I was surprised it wasnt as sophisticated as i expected. Reporter he along with american darion huss slowed the attack, but didnt stop it. Anybody could modify their code and rerelease it in the wild. Reporter the only way to guard against it it, experts say, update your Computer Software and avoid emails with strange links. Chinese officials detected a new version of this virus that spreads more quickly, they say. They also say it isnt affected by that kill switch. Some Industry Experts say this looks like the work of russian speaker cybercriminals and intelligence agencies around the world are investigating this. They say they simply dont know at this point whos behind it. Matt, savannah . Kelly, thank you very much. Sean henry is a former executive assistant dreirector with the fbi and now chief security officer. Sean, good to see you. Good morning. Good morning, matt. I understand this is complicated because these codes are coming from different sources in different places. So, whats it going to take for cybersecurity experts to track down whos doing this . Well, tracking down whos doing it is going to be very, very difficult. What youve got is hackers who have accessed these networks. Theyre using this code and it may be reconstituted and utilized by different organizations. Once that code is out there, hackers can grab it. They can make some changes. It makes it much more difficult to detect. And then they relaunch it and they actually impact additional organizations, even some who may be protected. Theyre also using bitcoin which allows them to remain anonymous. When people are actually paying these ransoms, its difficult, if not impossible for Law Enforcement to actually track it, matt. My question was just that. What is the advice here . Should people pay this ransom to get their documents back or not . What are they supposed to do . You know, ideally, you have your system protected. You dont suffer this type of attack and you dont have to pay. But, of course, what were seeing here, particularly througho against asia is attacks against software that is not updated. They have pirated software or using Legacy Software that is not supported. Microsoft has put out a patch and people have to get to that and they have to go to microsoft and download that immediately, savannah. Lets make sure we can say this in the simplest, most possible terms. Three things you would urge all device users and computer users to do today . Thei simplest thing is go to microsoft and download the patch. Go to microsoft and anybody who has that operating system. Make sure your network or system is actually backed up. If you are infected and your system is locked up, youre going to be able to reconstitute your network and recapture your data and start over again new. The third thing is, matt, you have to learn to detect and get Security Software that detects that types of attacks because the attackers are going to constantly make changes and even if you find today a patch, theyre going to exploit new vulnerabilitie vulnerabilities. You have to make sure you have Security Software to identify these attacks before your system gets locked up. Im no expert. Dont click on the funky links. Appreciate it. To the white house now and the search for a replacement for ousted fbi director james comey. The controversy over his firing is not quieting down in washington. We have complete coverage. President trump now searching for a new fbi director and a Senior Administration director telling nbc news the president has not yet conducted any inperson interviews that he is expected to meet with a few finalists but President Trump said this could be a fast decision suggesting he could make the call before his first foreign trip later this week. This morning, less than a week after fbi director james comey ebrupt dismissal including Andrew Mccabe and senator john cornyn. On capitol hill, wide agreement the next director should not be a partisan politician. I think its now time to pick somebody that comes from within the ranks or such a reputation that has no political background at all that can go into the job on day one. Reporter weighing in, the Group Representing current and former agents backing mike rogers who once served as an fbi special agent himself. He understands the agency. He understands the agent families. The agent what we do for a living. The life and death situations that agents are put in. The investigative efforts. Reporter also this morning this striking warning from the former director of National Intelligence about threats from overseas and from President Trump himself. Our institutions are under assault both externally and thats the big news here is the russian interference in our election system. And i think, as well, our institutions are under assault internally. Spoke to some white house officials this morning. They do not have any Immediate Response to that comment, but several of the president s top cabinet officials are backing him up. The u. N. Ambassador nikki haly saying he can hire or fire anybody he wants. Rex tillerson said he is devoted to help the president achieve his direobjectives. Thank you. Steve cornacky is with us now with a closer look at the contenders for the next fbi chief. Lets talk about who may be on top of the list and who some of the dark horses might be. A big list perspective candidates. More than a dozen. A couple different categories we can put these in. First of all, politicians. Now, this would be very unusual. Basically unprecedented tahave an fbi director who comes from the ranks of elected officials. John cornyn is supposedly part of this process. The criticism here is simply there is supposed to be a wall between the fbi and between politics. This could be a fight if trump wept with any of these names. Much more traditional, somebody who fits the mold weve come to think of. A department of justice background and a background on a federal bunch. Michael garcia from new york. He fits both of those. That is somebody traditional you might look at for this job. Lindsey graham said you want someone who can get a running start. Someone who knows the fbi or who is already there or will have that kind of background. Andrew mccabe is in the mix. The problem could be the question of loyalty to trump. He came out and backed comey last week. Would trump want to turn around and give him a tenyear term. Mike rogers, the former congressman and also former fbi agent and he was endorsed over the weekend by the association representing fbi agents. That might be a name, as well, to keep an eye on. From a start, it didnt fail and it appears to be a new type of rocket with a longer range. One that north korea says can carry a Nuclear Warhead. It was north koreas seventh test this year of a missile it says can reach u. S. Military bases in the pacific. It flew high and long. The pride of leader kim jongun who was pictured with it and applauding its launch, according to north korea. This rocket can carry a large and heavy Nuclear Warhead. It was different because it flew high. More than 1,200 miles up and more than 400 miles out. Close to russia. Suggesting, say experts, that north koreas missile range is growing and sparking condemination of the launch and of the leader who ordered it. I think get into kim jonguns head. Which is he is in a state of paranoia and concerned about anything and everything around him. I think this was a message to south korea after the election and what were going to do is continue to tighten the screws. He feels it. He absolutely feels it. Security Council Meets tomorrow to know exactly what to do. The white house says because the rocket landed closer and the president cant imagine that russia is pleased. In china and he is saying we need to talk to north korea and stop scaring it. President trump, of course, is pressuring china, north koreas only ally to do more because one thing is clear, u. N. President trumps revised travel ban goes back to court in seattle today. The administration wants an Appeals Court by a federal judge in hawaii. That judge blocked the ban from going into effect. The president s order would bar entry to foreign nationals. President trump says the restrictions are a key part of his plan to keep out potential terrorists. The state of hawaii contends the order is a thinly ordered ban on muslims. Now to a new problem for United Airlines. It is issuing a security alert to pilots and flight attendants worldwide saying its procedures for gaining access to the cockpit. Hi, savannah, good morning to you. United like all airlines safeguards about key pad codes and procedures to get on to a cockpit and that information got out over the next few days. The airline is trying to fix that problem and reminding its employees under no circumstances can they share the sensitive information. This morning, United Airlines insists it wasnt a hack, but its confidential procedures for gaining access to the flight deck leaked. Now, the airline is moving fast to shore up its procedures. That could mean reprogramming the keypads on every united cockpit door with new access codes. Veteran pilot captain john cox. Something like this information getting in the wrong hands is something that theyre dealing with very quickly. Reporter since 9 11, every flight deck door on every commercial aircraft has been reinforced with steel. New planes come off the assemly borderlines with tougher, fortified doors. To gain access to the cockpit, crew members must enter a secret keypad code and airlines have their own confidential procedures for opening the door to flight attendants while in the air. If a pilot leaves the cockpit to use the restroom, Many Airlines require flight attendants to block the aisle with a food cart. So, this is undermined all the time. We are trained to be vigilant and, in fact, our procedures are to remain in Constant Contact with the cabin. Reporter in a statement, United Airlines tells nbc news the safety of our customers and crew is our top priority and united utilizes a number of measures to keep decks secure beyond door access information. Critical since united planes take off with passengers 4,500 times each day. United says its notified the faa of the breach. It does not believe and security sources do not believe that information fell into the hands of terrorists, but they say they simply can take no chance. Little scary. Tom, thank you very much. A task force arrested the suspect saturday at a mcdonalds in benicia close to where a car fire had just been set. Investigators are tying the suspect to a number of other arsons as well. So far, the only thing we know is the suspect is 36 years old and lives in the county. Hes being held on 3 million bail. Lets look at the headlines. The worldwide cyber attack known as wannacry is spreading this morning. 100,000 organizations in 150 countries have withbeen impacte. Businesses, to hospitals and schools. Theres a new concern. Two versions of that virus have been detected. Overnight, at least one person died in a sevenalarm highrise Apartment Building fire in pittsburgh. You can see flames as they shoot out of the windows of the midtown towers there. Crews evacuated 100 people as they battled the flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation. And nascar driver aric amarola is out of the hospital, after a fiery crash. Danica patricks car burned into flames and amarola had to be cut out of his car. He was taken away by ambulance and airlifted to the hospital, treated for a fractured vertebrae. Our thoughts are with him, for sure. Lets get the latest on the death of 19yearold timothy piazza, during the apparent hazing incident at Penn State University. It happened in february. We sat down with his parents and brother last night. Were going to hear from them in a moment. First, how the tragedy unfolded. These pictures show a vibrant life cut short. Timothy piazza died at penn state in february, during an alcoholfueled pledge ritual known as the gauntlet. Now, 18 members of the Fraternity Beta Theta Pi are charged in his death. They made the pledges run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of alcohol. Reporter pledges shotgunning beers and drinking from vodka bottles. After more than an hour, prosecutors say piazza is staggering towards the basement steps. The mothers hear him fall and carry him back to the couch. One brother testifies they demanded they take piazza to the hospital. But hes shoved to a wall and asked to leave. A group text is sent around. Tim piazza may be a problem. Going to need help. But nothing happens. Piazza stands for a final time, staggering again towards the basement. Later in the morning, hes found there, cold to the touch. Finally, the brothers call for help, nearly 12 hours after piazza first fell. But it was too late. Now, our emotional conversation with him the ttimothy piazzas. We begin talking about the disturbing timeline of the fateful night. It was horrific. This wasnt boys being boys, matt. This was men, who intended to forcefeed lethal amounts of control into other young men. And what happened throughout the night was just careless disregard for human life. They basically treated our son as road kill and a rag doll. Nobody should consume that much alcohol. Thats thats torture. Reporter there are videotapes. That house had an internal video system thats pretty extensive. How much of the video have you seen . We havent seen the video yet, matt. I dont really want to see it. But i will tell you this, if the board of trustees and president barron watch it with me, ill watch it. Reporter you dont want to watch it alone as a parent. But you would watch it with someone that could make decisions that could make a difference . Absolutely. I dont want to see it as a parent because i feel like it will be painful. And the last memories of my son will be him being abused for 12 hours and dying a slow and painful death. I watch you as your husband talked about whats on the video. Because of how inebriated tim was, he fell a number of times. And one of those falls was down a staircase that was 15 feet long. He was severely injured. And for 12 hours. They slapped him. Threw water in his face. Sat on him. They punched him. Where the ruptured spleen was. Trying to wake him up. Snap out of it. They did a sternum rub. Somebody knew what a sternum rub was and knew that if he didnt react to it, theres a significant issue. They did nothing about it. When did you realize something was wrong . One of his roommates called me, to see if i knew where he was because he hadnt come home. So, i called the hospital, just to see. And the woman on the phone told me, he was in the emergency room. I went over there immediately. And when i got there, i found out pretty quickly how serious it was. Were you the one who called your folks . I had to call my mom to let her know that he was severely injured and that they were going to fly him to the Hershey Medical Center because he was so severe they couldnt treat him there. When was the first time you saw tim . He was in surgery. And the doctors came out and sat us down. Said he had a nonrecoverable brain injury. We knew at that point he wasnt going to make it. We were hoping there would be something different, an outcome. They let us go in and see him, we talked to him a little bit. We held his hand. A tear came to his eye. And i said to the doctor, can he hear us . And the doctor said, maybe. We relieved a lot of pressure, maybe. But i dont know if i want to know if he heard us or not. If he heard us, he knew he was going to die. And there was nothing they could do . No. The dablg wmage was too severe. The bleeding had been too long. Did you ask any of the surgeons or the doctors, had he been brought to you an hour, two hours, four hours, six hours, with the outcome have been different . I said those exact words. If he was brought here earlier, would the outcome be different . And the doctor said, yeah. So, the 12 hours he was left on a couch, on the floor, wherever it was in the fraternity house, when no one picked up the phone and called 911, that is what made the difference . Yeah. Yes. They killed him. When the funeral came around, did any of those Fraternity Pledges or potential brothers come to the funeral . No one from the fraternity or from penn state came to the wake or the funeral. No official from Penn State University reached out and said im going to be there . I want to show up at this young mans wake or funeral . No. When i met with president barron, when we met with him, i brought a copy of the mass book with tims picture. And i said, since no one had the time to come to the services, i thought you might want to see this. What did he say . He took a deep breath and sat back in his chair and nodded. No apology . No heres why we couldnt come . Or heres why we didnt come . Or we are truly sorry . He may have said he was sorry about what happened. But no one came. Its a horrific story. Want to mention, were doing the interview, with ms. Piazza, on mothers day, yesterday. They were strong to do it. And in our next half hour, theyre going to open up about what punishment they think the boys charged in this case should face. And also, theyre going to tell you what we should all tell our own children about this. They think will make a difference. Just heart wrenching to hear that. Underscoring that penn state, nobody showed up. That was one more thing. Heartless. We look forward to that part of the interview. We want to switch gears, not easy to do. Fedex said its computers were infected on friday. The virus is called ransomwear because it locks computers, encrypts files and demands money. About 300 in bitcoin to get access to the files. Its based on a hole in metropolitan security in a the nsa first found. Hackers stole it last summer and leaked it online. Over the weekend, a British Cyber researcher found a killswitch. Along with an american, slowed down the virus. But this morning, the chinese say theyve detected a new version that spreads even faster and isnt affected by that killswitch. New crashes over this past weekend. According to the store front safety council, 60 crashes a day, with more than 4,000 people injured. And up to 500 killed each year from this. This morning, were getting an exclusive look at new technology, designed to stop a moving car before it hits you. New york. Watch this minivan barrel through the entrance of this convenience store. This man is pinned between the aisles. He escaped injured but alive. In texas, another outofcontrol car, plowing through the doors of this convenience store. This boy is able to walk away. And in california, this car slams into a grocery store, missing this customer by just inches. It happens all over, every day. Cars charging into store fronts. From beauty salons, to restaurants. Even bringing down an entire building. Many of these accidents happen even with crash barriers installed out front. And this is what most of those barriers look like across the country. What you thought about the skoem of this and what this guy must have been like . It was around christmas, just before christmas. It was. It was all over the news. Everybody was pretty you couldnt avoid being aware of it. He wasnt the first guy who bilked people out of a lot of money. But there was something about this story that captured all of our attention. 65 billion worth of attention. Right. So much was written about it. So much was said about it. Michelle, what new did you want to come out in this movie . Well, i think the court of Public Opinion believes that ruth and the boys were involved. And even, you know, as she says, somehow she ridiculously masterminded the whole thing. And it couldnt be further from the truth. And i think for all of us, i think it was very important that their story be told because anyone who was involved in any way, anybody who had written about it, who had researched it, who knew them, who there wasnt one person who believed that they knew anything about it. Im glad you brought that up. Thats the question i hear more than any other question. You met ruth. It must have been an interesting meeting. I understand she was not all that happy about this movie being made. What was the time with her like . She was guarded, understandably so. But incredibly gracious. I was really surprised that she was actually willing to meet me. And i just spent time with her. I didnt you know, my intent wasnt to sort of present her with any probing questions or i felt like she had been victimized enough by the media. I certainly didnt want to add to her torture. So, i just wanted to observe her. And we just spent about an hour together. You know, i wanted to get a sense of her. And coming away from that, as you said, you have no doubt in your mind, that she knew nothing about the fraud her husband perpetua perpetuated. We didnt get into that conversation. But everything i had read, there have been books written on it. Trust me, they wanted to indict ruth and her boys. If they had any ounce of incriminating information, they would have. By the way, never forget the victims of his fraud. But think about what happened to this family. I mean, Bernie Madoff lost everything. His life, his the family was also victims of the fallout. Exactly. He had a son who committed suicide. Another son that died of a disease that had to be complicated of the stress carrying out the madoff name. It was in remission. And im sure the stress helped to bring that back. And ruth madoff for a while, its depicted in the scene to the start. She stood by him at the beginning. As a result, paid a huge price with her sons. Correct. She was estranged. She was 14 when they met. He was her first and only love. And theres a line in the film when she says, youre my whole life her memories were all of him. And she didnt know anything else. And i think, you know, once you love someone that deeply, it doesnt just end, no matter what they do. I remember, we did an interview about Something Else at the time you were shooting this. You shaved that hair back. Its uncanny how much you seem to look like him. Theres some seens in the movie, i was selling him, i have to do a doubletake because did they use real footage . He looks so much like him. When you do the shaving. I did the shaving of the head, because when you put a ball cap. A ball cap. You know if you look carefully, the forehead is tigheightened, r so much. You have to do that to get the effect. Theyre introducing a first of its kind plan to fire back on freeway shootings along a busy highway corridor. The plan calls for a network of cameras on interstate 80 and highway 4 between richmond and antioch. It would notify authorities within seconds of a shooting. At least 30 different freeway shootings have happened and been reported to Contra Costa County in the last year and a half. Something we will continue to follow.
