We began by asking him if hes worried that Rex Tillerson, the guy he suggested to trump for secretary of state, will always face lingering doubts when he deals with russia or putin. I dont think so. Once rex is confirmed and in office, that his actions will prove that hes basically totally focused on looking out for best interests of the United States. And frankly, i was disappointed that it was a party line vote. I had hoped that a few democrats would support rex. Lets stay on russia for a second. Youre very aware of the things donald trump has tweeted about russia and vladimir putin, calling him a great leader, calling him an asset saying he wants a closer relationship with him. You four months ago said trumps expressions of admiration for putin and his aauthoritarian regime are naive and irresponsible. And youre the guy who said, i looked in Vladimir Putins eyes and saw the eyes of a stonecold killer. When you met with president elect trump a couple months ago, did you personally say those things to him . Did you warn him about putin . I did. I used i told him about that story about looking into putins eyes, but i also told him that i thought that the challenge for his administration was going to be to thread the needle between figuring out how to push back against putins aggressions and interventions and thuggery, and at the same time figure out a way to stop what i regard as a dangerous downward spiral in the relationship. But you have to do both things. Ou know thi and cia and other intelligence ageies are investigating possible improper contact between three of mr. Trumps former campaign associates, the New York Times goes as far as saying theyre looking at intercepted communications and financial data. Youve got an experienced gut. You were this nations top spy. Does this make you squeezezy . Well, i dont know anything about the investigation. What i have some confidence in based on experience is i have no doubt that the russians tried to intervene in our election, that they tried to discredit and legitimize the election. Theyre trying to do that in europe right now in elections there. So this is a part of the way the russians do business. Let me move on to the cia when President Trump went to the cia a couple days ago and stood in front of that wall of stars, which represent the people who gave their lives for this country and the intelligence community. And he chose the opportunity to pick a fight with the media and did some selfpromoting. Did you feel he was disrespectful to the agency and those people who gave their lives . Well, i think there was sort of there seems to be sort of a stream of consciousness that goes on. First of all, i thought it was an important gesture to go out there in the first place, even before mike pompeo was confirmed and basically say to the people at the agency he respected them and wanted to work with them. So i think that was important. Is there still a rift . Well, i this i to the degree there is. And there is always tension. But youre in contact with some of your associates. First of all, theres always tension between cia and president s, because cia says things president s dont like. And so, you know, i think mike pompeo, i talked to him several time, and i think hell be successful in sort of mending this, but more importantly figuring out how to make cia a useful asset for the president. When President Trump went to langley over the weekend, he made the comment, we might get another chance to steal iraq soil. Quote, if we kept the oil, we wouldnt have had isis in the first place. The old expression to the victor belong the spoils, we should have kept the oil but okay, maybe well have another chance. As the former head of the defense department, at is your reaction to that . I have no clue what hes talking about. If the u. S. Military were to go in now and try to steal iraqs soil, wouldnt that be International Crime . I think thats not going to happen. During his inaugural address, he said a new vision will govern or land. From this day forward, its only going to be america first. And historically speaking, how do you think that sounds to our allies . I think it reinforces their impression already that the United States is pulling back from engagement around the world. And i think its leading a lot of the this started before the election under the Obama Administration. And i think it just reinforces their view that they may be need to recalibrate their relationships with other countries including russia and china. If they think the United States is basically speaking from the role we have had in the last seven decades, other countries are going to fill that. In your book, you write this, important qualities for a leader. They need to have the right temperament and to keep their egoin check and treat people with dignity and respect. Having written that, are you confident donald trump will be an effective leader . I think that you have two sort of parallel universities, so to speak. You have the public commentary, tweeting and so on and so forth, thats a little mindboggling. But then, many people talk about meeting with the president in private and having very serious, very thoughtful conversations. That was the case when i met with him in december. So, i think when i look at the team hes putting around him in national security, tillerson, and mattis and kelly and so on, and i hear about the meetings in private, i think he can exercise very sound leadership and make good decisions about having to change would you like to see him bring though two sides of personalities together . Dr. Jeffrey macdonald has been behind bars for four decades for the brutal killings of his wife and young daughters. This week, he goes back to court for an appeal, with what his legal team says is new evidence on his side. I did not injure them. I did not assault them. And i did not murder them. Reporter for nearly five decades, dr. Jeffrey macdonald never wavered in his claim that he had nothing to do in the killing of his family. What happened to this family was so horrific, it was out of a horror movie. Reporter february 17th, 1970, macdonalds wife and daughters were murdered at their apartment. He claimed he was attacked with a severe head injury and 17 stab wounds, one deep enough to puncture his lung. One guy was swinging a club at me and i thought they were punching me. Turns out, they were stabbing me. Reporter the crime made headlines, becoming a bestselling book, fatal vision. Later turned into a famous series. You are telling me i killed my wife and kids . Macdonald was a surgeon, he knew how to injure himself to make it look bad, but not kill him. Reporter macdonald was tried and found guilty in 1979 and given three life sentences. Now, macdonalds defense team says they have proof the crime scene was contaminated from the start. And criminal evidence was withheld from the defense team. Including bloody footprints, unidentified hairs, candle drippings throughout the home that dont match candles. And a bloody syringe found at the scene. There was no evidence that Jeffery Macdonald or anyone in his household was a drug user. So, a halffilled bloody syringe, could be evidence that there were intruders in that house that evening. Reporter while macdonald and his team are insistent new evidence proves he is innocence, prosecutors are just as confident he remains guilty. U. S. Attorney John Stewart Bruce declined comments on the specifics of the case. Saying in a statement, when cases are pending court proceedings, it is the practice of our office to litigate the case through court, through evidence and argument in hearings and in written filings with the court, rather than new the news media. He has been fighting to clear his name. He has never strayed from his story saying he did not kill his pregnant wife and two daughters. If it takes me saying i killed my family to the Parole Commission to go home, i am never going home. Reporter macdonald says the only way he wants to be released from prison is by exoneration. You like the four piles. How do you separate things . Were going to sell, donate, trash it or keep it. When youre looking to sell items, theres a lot of different ways to get rid of things. Things like apps, like offer up and five miles, where you get rid of big pieces. How do you know how anything is worth . You look on a site like ebay to see what it sold for. You can track those prices. Start at 50 or 70 of what you originally paid for it. Okay. When youre donating, sites like goodwill, salvationrmy. Its deductible. Have guides of the on their con. But you have to get a receipt from the charity that you give it to anything worth over 250. Some things you take a deep breath and throw it away. This is an incredible recipe. All of the comfort foods i just talked about. Barbecue beef lasagna. Barbecue pork lasagna, with grandmas sunday gravy. This is perfect. Look at the ingredients. Theres a lot. Theres a lot. But any good barbecue or slow took, is going to take a nice rub, which will have all of the flavor and that love. Some salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder. Cayenne. And were going to add it to this bowl. A little brown sugar and white sugar. Some chance you dont have one of the ingredients, is the game over . No. If theres a rub, go buy it. Whatever you like. We take it and rub it all over our pork shoulder. This is an eight to ten pound pork shoulder. Were going to take this guy put it into this slow cooker. With aittle chicken stock, apple cider vinegar, tomato paste and brown sugar. How long is it in there . Eight to ten hours, really. It depends upon the meat. You can put it in before you go to work. By the time you come home, the meat is done. You take it out and you put on the board, theres a bone that should just pull out like that. And the meat should be falling off. Al and i have been picking this thing apart. Nice and moist and juicy. We cheated with this one. We did this one in our smokers at pig beach. Next stop, we have to make a white sauce. A little butter. Some flour. Its equal parts butter to flour. Were going to cook that until it has a toasted aroma to it. It will take three to four minutes to do that. Right in this pan, where you see the color has changed from white to a little toasted blonde color. Now, we add in the milk in thirds. Why is that important . You tonight want it to clump up. You want it to be creamy and smooth. Once it gets nice and smooth, add some more milk. And repeat the process, when its done. When youre working with rues, youre never getting a thickening power until it comes up to a boil. You have to bring this up to a boil. It turns into this . It turns into this. When assembling the lasagna, put it in a pastry pag. It makes it easy to work. I notice you use a shallow pan. You dont use a deep were going to do something different. Were going to go outside of the box, or the pan. And were going to do a free form and build it up to about that high. Show me. We have the pasta sheets. Or you can make them and boil them yourselves. Any pasta sheet is good. You smear a little of grandmas gravy on the bottom. Take some of the pork shoulder. Youre a little skimpy. Were going to make 16 layers of this. Sometimes less is more. And were going to sprinkle it with cheese. And our white sauce. Now this . Yes, sir. Put that over the top. Beautiful. And now, were going to repeat that process. Press down just slightly. And repeat that process until you use up all of your pasta sheets. Lets look downstairs for a second. Look whats happening down there. Amazing.
