Coming up, were going to see how addicted people are to their phones and were going to tell you how to separate yourself from something that you do too much of where. All right. Lets talk about body image. We seem to be talking about the same thing over and over again. Body image. Phones. Its that time of the year. Right . Were trying to get our stuff straight. Theres a survey done by muscle maker grill, and they found that 81 of americans feel like they havent reached their proper ideal body type. Yeah. I will say this. Over the holidays, i was looking through pictures from college. Yes, there were some freshmen 15 pictures. Weve all seen those on the cover of People Magazine and stuff, but i will say that there was this picture of me with my grandpa and i looked so happy, and also i wish i had appreciated that body. I said that to henry, and he said do that now. You look great. Youre 35. You look fab. Youre a mother of two. Youre strong. Do that now. Dont wait until youre 08 and say i wish i had appreciated it at 35. Youre right. Thats actually a good rule of thumb. Every time you look back at pictures and say it wasnt as bad as i thought in your head they were asked these questions. Which of these four things would you give up to achieve that ideal body type . Alcohol, social media, sex, or your cell phone . What would you give up . I would give up alcohol in a second. I would give up alcohol because truth be told, i love the wine. You dont need it. I have other things that im much more addicted to than that. What would you give up . I sort of agree. I have given up alcohol twice for nine months, and there were times i missed it, yes, but all in all, not really. 37 agree with us. Lauderdale, florida, where there is a shooting. Were told one person is dead. We dont know if that was the shooter. There were reports that a shooter was in custody. The motive unclear. Its happening at terminal 2. Youre seeing some of the video of emergency crews on the scene there on the outside of the terminal. Terminal 2 operates Delta Air Lines flights. I want to go to nbcs Kerry Sanders who is outside the airport. Kerry, what have you learned . Reporter lester, as you reported, Law Enforcement officials are telling me that nine people have been shot. Indeed, they believe the gunman is in custody, but theyre still looking to see if there may be another person who is armed in the area. That would be traditional Law Enforcement approach in a situation like this. One person, its believed, has died at the scene. Motive remains unclear. Passengers in the area many out on the taxiwan to put them in a safe zone. As you can understand, much of the airport is in a lockdown situation. The authorities are trying to get a handle on what happened and more importantly at this point whether its still on going or whether its over. And i recognize access is limited to the airport right now. Is there any word whether this occurred on the socalled secure side of the airport or the lobby area, the unsecured portion . Reporter its unclear. I was told it happened between terminals 2 and 3 which means it would have been outside. This airport is an airport where each terminal is separate, has its own tsa. Terminal 2 is mostly Delta Air Lines. If it happened between terminal 2 and 3, it could happen on the upper deck which is the departure area or down below which is the arrival area. Havent quite pinpointed which spot that happened at. Thats the area where a lot of people walk from terminal to terminal when theyre changing planes and actually changing airlines. Forgive me for my lack of familiarity. This is part of the miami metropolitan area in terms of air service, correct . Reporter absolutely. This airport is second to miami International Airport, but it is a huge airport. Off the top of my head i think its like 15 million passengers a year coming in and out of ft. Lauderdale. Southwest and jetblue come here come here rather than miami. A lot of people come to this metropolitan area will fly to ft. Lauderdale. If theyre going to miami, theyll take the 35minute drive to get to south beach or Something Like that. You can see a lot of the traffic stopped going into the airport there. Also you saw on the tarmac what appeared to be a number of passengers and or workers who have been evacuated to the runway section, the ramp section if you will, then, where all this is sorted out, not unlike the pictures we saw in brussels following an attack at that airport several months ago. Again, it is nine people shot, one person dead and kerry reporting the shooter is in custody. We dont know if the shooter was among the wounded there. The shooting currently occurring, as kerry tells us, between terminal 1 and 2. Delta is a big operator there between terminal 1 and 2. Right now things at a standstill, as they always will in this case, secondary searches in case this is part of a broader plot involving others. Lets go to nbcs tom costello who covers aviation, familiar with the security arrangements. Tom . Lester, really quickly, weve checked with the faa and t the tsa. At the moment they report this is very much a local police or Airport Police matter. They do not have at this point any update on the status of whats going on there. Keep in mind the tsa is not an Armed Security force. We all see them when we of course go into the airport. You will at times see a tsa, Homeland Security viper team. Those are the armed s. W. A. T. Looking teams that patrol the airports in conjunction with the local Airport Police authority. By and large, tsa officers are not armed. Whatever the Police Response is to this incident, as it would be in any airport, that would be very much up to the local police on the armed officers on the scene. What i also would take note of, i just now checked to see if weve got a ground stop on the ground at that airport at ft. Lauderdale. So far Nothing Official on the faas website. We checked with them. They dont have anything either. It clearly is an immediately unfolding situation where youve got paramedic units out on the ramp and we dont know if this is on going in terms of treating people or whether they might be looking for any other suspects, but we know that one suspect is in custody, lester. Lets go back to Kerry Sanders. Kerry, do we know if this occurred in baggage claim . Reporter i wish i could pen point it for you, and im going to try to do that. I think ill get a better handle once i can get myself into the location, ill get a better handle. If folks have friends or relatives that were flying, terminal 2 is mostly delta. Terminal 3 has jetblue and american airlines. Thats where people would have been coming or going. Again, im still trying to determine whether this happened outside, outside the tsa secure line or whether it happened on the other side of the security line. Just for the next week everybody take a check in and start adding up how many minutes you are. By the way, parents should do that too. Then set up a contract and say heres our unplugged times. Big problem now parents go, okay, now were not plugged in. What do we do . These are conversation starters that kids create. Pull them out each day at the dinner hour. Lauderdale airport. At least nine people shot. The official number dead is one. Let me go to Pete Williams, our justice correspondent in washington. What are you hearing . Lester, this is not unusual in a situation like this where the numbers initially are subject to revision. Two federal authorities told us three were dead. Were still not certain whether thats an accurate number. It could be one, it could be three. We believe nine other people were injured. Were still trying to figure out whether that number of dead includes whether there was a total of nine people shot, one of whom died or three of whom died or whether theres a separate number for the number of injured. In any event, the shooting itself, the threat appears to be over. It all started about 1 00 in the afternoon eastern time and was quickly resolved by Airport Security officials. Were told the shooter we dont know whether its a man or woman. We dont know anything about the person with the gun. All weve been told is the person is in custody. Whether the person was wounded, what sort of shape theyre in, we dont know that yet. Its all very preliminary at this port. Were looking at aerial pictures of the airport. You saw that crowd of people filing toward a lower level entrance door. Those appear to be passengers who were evacuated to the tarmac during the height of this, now being let into at least this part of the airport as the situation, as pete noted, seems to be stable. Our Kerry Sanders has made his way to the airport as far as he could in a vehicle and last we heard was walking to the scene. Kerry, what more can you tell us . I made my way to terminal 2 which is shut down. Outside there are officers with customs and Border Control heavily armed, patrolling in front of the entrances in the departure level, the upper level. Inside there are passengers told to remain seated. Theyre allowed to leave the inside but not allowed to go back in. On the upper deck there are lots of passengers milling about. The shooting apparently happened downstairs at the lower level which is the baggage claim. Fabian is one who heard the shots. What did you do . I was standing outside and waiting for my flight, taking if a little bit of sun. All of a sudden there was a barrage of what sounded like gunfire. I looked over the ledge towards the first floor area and saw the gentleman escorted by what i think was his wife bleeding from his arm and just a barrage of people coming out of the main terminal here. How did you feel for yourself and your own safety after you saw the blood must have realized it was, indeed, gunfire . It was a bit stunning. I was in a bit of shock. I wasnt sure how many people were hurt, how many gunmen there were, but assumed as long as it was lower floor, i figured i was okay so i didnt dart or anything. A lot of people did run. Reporter of course, its possible some of those people who were injured were those running for their own safety. Darren mark was also here. He looked over the railing as did fabian and saw a man down there. Tell me what you saw and what went through your mind. I walked by this man. He had his right arm raised and looked as if he had a bullet wound on his arm, blood pooling down his arm and onto his body. Youre not used to seeing a sight like that in daily life. It was terrifying. As youre traveling in an airport and you know the state of things in our world, what goes through your mind, how unsettled are you right now . Its extremely unsettling. The sad reality is that a lot of us exist knowing these kinds of things are possibilities given what we see on the news and read and hear day to day. Unfortunately i think many of us dont think well come facetoface. In this new reality, we have to expect it can happen, and today it did. Darren marks, one of hundreds of passengers here between terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 2 is mostly Delta Airlines as well as air canada. The authorities are right now this is the Broward Sheriffs Department with bomb sniffing dogs. This is part of the protocol after Something Like this. I might note that within the last year and a half, the Police Department and the airport here along with the Sheriffs Department. Came here with a defensive measure at each entrance where they put some very strong pillars to prevent somebody from driving a vehicle in through a door and causing problems, say, with a car that might be loaded with some sort of bomb or Something Like that. This airport has been very aware of the threat. Of course, remember, it is the armed person who arrived that is not going through security that is undetected. Lets listen in for a second. [ inaudible ]. Reporter you heard that. No current threat is the headline. All service suspended. Kerry, ill still trying to get a picture. They saw people coming out who had been shot. Were they coming from the secured area that you were in before you get into baggage claim . Fabian, lester and i are curious. People were running. Were they running to the other side or were these people outside yet to go through the tsa lines. They had yet to go through the tsa lines. These were folks that were either checking in or standing by or walking toward tsa when they heard the gunshots, they came running. Okay. So that sort of explains it right now. That goes back to the question which is somebody who arrived at the airport armed. In florida, there are very permissive gun laws compared to other states. You can come to the airport armed. Its more a matter of getting through security. That is the question, where you cant go through with a weapon. Kerry sanders, we saw that in los angeles back in 2013 when a gunman made his way through tsa security and ultimately shot and killed a tsa security screener. As we look at these pictures, i want to led you know that the Broward County sheriff has sent out a tweet saying multiple people are dead, no specific number. But multiple people dead, and again, the shooter is now in custody. As we heard the situation now, its stable there at the airport in ft. Lauderdale. Let me go to nbcs tom costello actually, lets go back to Pete Williams right now. Pete, i noted earlier this is a terrorizing incident. But because it is an airport, our mind goes to internationaltype terror. Any indication of that or federal agencies taking a look at that . Well, thats going to be a big question here. Theyre in no position to answer that at this point. They just dont know what was the motive for this. Lester, candidly, weve seen a mix of these things over the years at airports around public places, especially at airports. Weve seen cases of terrorism. Weve seen cases where people are in sort of domestic disputes. Weve seen cases of people that are simply people with mental problems. So its just way too early to say what, for want of a better word, what the motive is here. Youre seeing people who have been evacuated to the tarmac. Theyre going up the stairs on the jet bridge. Theyre liking going back in the terminal and not onto that jet. But another indication the situation is stabilized. I want to bring in james cavanaugh, nbc Law Enforcement analyst. James, this puts into question the limits of Airport Security. If you stand in that tsa line, youre standing there because yu eyre submitting to the way were supposed to do things and go through. We saw the attack in brussels in 2015, i mentioned los angeles 2013 had security. Are we going to have to take a harder look at securing the airport from the outside in . I think all the political leaders will, lester, look at that. That is the egress to the airport. Its a crowd, a choke point, basically a ticket line, baggage claim where this reportedly occurred. You know, if you go to an airport in tel aviv, the police are looking at you way out from an airport at sort of a doll booth facility and watching you closely as you get off in front of the terminal. Then theyre checking you before you even get to baggage claim. They have a heightened level of security in israel, only 40 flights a day. They do extend their security way out. In the u. S. , our security is after you go through the tsa security checkpoint. Prior to that the security is only a few airport officers, in this case the Broward CountySheriffs Department secures that airport. Theyre around and probably had a Quick Response when the gunshots started, but all those people are not searched. Someone could easily walk into a baggage claim area with a handgun, literally with a long gun under their jacket. Until they started shooting or somebody observed them, you wouldnt know they had the guns. As of our last check a moment ago, there is no official ground stop. When the camera pulled out a bit ago we saw a number of airplanes lined up on the taxiway. The airlines are not operating given the situation. Theres a view of the highway leading on to the airport. Police have blocked access. Another strong indication that nothing is going to be departing or necessarily arriving at that airport until they can get folks, either the crime scene certainly secured and processed, all those people will have to be rescreened. Lets go back to Pete Williams who is in the baggage claim area. We heard a man telling wnbc that he was in the baggage claim terminal, baggage claim area when the shooting started. He said the person firing the shots appeared to be a young man in his late 20s. This man said the young man appeared to be wearing a shirt with star wars movie characters on it. Wasnt sure what type of weapon. Says he fired many shots and paused to reload and according to this witness it took a while for Airport Security people to respond and many people were shot. The official number we have i say official number, the number were getting from officials is nine injured. What weve been told is three dead. As you noted earlier, the county sheriff says there are multiple fatalities which simply means obviously more than one. We dont have a good number yet, lester. Good number yet, lester. Many heard gunfire and ran for safety. The authorities have terminal two closed down. There are some passengers who are on the waiting area inside that have been told to remain inside. They may be witnesses. Its unclear. The authorities are still trying to get a handle on what happened here, what the motivation was, but we do know some of the witnesses did see wounded people walking out onto the taxiway, looking for help.
