Hillary clinton is changing her Campaign Schedule to deal with a surging Bernie Sanders in california this morning. Take a look at the results from our new nbc news surveymonkey online poll. It shows a twopoint race between clinton and trump in their likely national matchup. Weve got complete coverage. Lets start with kristen welker, at Clinton Campaign headquarters this morning in brooklyn, new york. Good morning. We are learning secretary clinton is upending her Campaign Schedule to add extra events in california later on this week. A sign she is clearly concerned about losing the state and its 475 delegates that are up for grabs. Secretary clinton spent her memorial day at a parade in chappaqua, her adopted hometown. Later this week, she will cancel an event in new jersey to get to california sooner than expected for a fiveday campaign swing. Meanwhile, senator sanders, who spent part of his memorial day at a Golden State Warriors game, has been in the state virtually nonstop. Hes been putting in resources to try and win california. Mathematically, the race is nearly out of sanders reach, but last night, he was defiant. Were trying to run a campaign here in california which, to the best of my knowledge, is unprecedented. Weve spoken to 137,000 californians. By the time thime this campaign over, that number will be well over 200,000 people from one end of the state to the other. Polls show it is a tight race in california. Secretary clinton leads, but only by two points. 46 to 44 . Heres the reality check. Secretary clinton will likely win the nomination, whether or not she wins california. Remember, barack obama lost california to clinton back in 2008. But in this election cycle, a loss in the most populous state would give senator sanders more leverage heading into the convention and over the partys platform. It could also leave her looking bruised heading into what will undoubtedly be a brutal election battle with donald trump. Matt, savannah . Kristen, thank you. Lets look at the other side of things. Trump expected to get specific today, talking about the money he said he raised for veterans on the campaign trail. Nbcs Hallie Jackson is at trump tower in manhattan. Good morning to you. Good morning. Donald trump says he will account for those donations at a News Conference today at trump tower. To some, a test of his ability to keep the promises hes made. In the meanwhile, hes lashing out, preemptively, at a possible thirdparty challenger. While we often hear of interruptions at trump rallies, this morning its one of his rivals whose protesters are making headlines. Donald trump in the hot seat once again. This time, after a fundraiser for veterans earlier this year. Now, questions about how much money was really raised and where the cash really went. I said, lets do this. Were announcing on tuesday, all of the groups we put up this money and we raised this tremendous amount of money. Because we love the vets. Reporter the presumptive nominee claiming he raised 6 million for vets when he skipped a debate in january to hold a charity rally instead. Promising to detail the donations today. Still a mystery. Another mystery, who might be considering a run as an independent challenger. Conservative writer bill kristol dropping hints but telling nbc nothing is imminent. Other sources familiar with the recruiting process say an update could come in the next few days. Mitt romney, paul sasse and paul ryan denying any rumors it could be them. I dont want to do the independent thing, but i do keep it, and it is leverage. Reporter most analysts agree, a conservative challenger could peel away enough votes to hand the white house to the democrats this fall. Meanwhile, one of those democratic rivals, Bernie Sanders, seeing a scuffle at his rally overnight. Two secret Service Agents quick to shield the vermont senator from Animal Rights protesters who hopped a barricade. Other agents can be seen rushing the demonstrators. One using a baton to keep them away. With the crowd cheering, sanders continuing his rally less than a minute after the altercation. We dont get intimidated easily. And new this morning, our nbc news surveymonkey online poll is revealing more about the divisions within both parties. Registered voters, 38 predict the democrats will still be divided come november. I question at this moment whether someone else getting in would weaken him at all. Bill kristol wouldnt throw something out for no reason. A lot of people have said, its not me. Who could it be . Give me a couple of names. Ill tell you the kinds of people out there. There are generals out there. The kinds of people that would be difficult to attack from someone like donald trump. I kind of person like a Stanley Mcchrystal with an impeccable resume on military matters. Also stragglers in the stop trump movement. A person who stood on principle and said i will never vote for donald trump. Theres even the question of, could they get on the ballot. If the point is to not get on the ballot and just be a spoiler, who signs up for that . Heres the question, we used to talk i remember chuck todd said, its almost too late to get on every ballot. It is now too late. The theory hinges on someone getting in and depriving either Hillary Clinton or donald trump of getting 270 electoral votes. Talk about what happens if nobody gets 270 electoral votes. It goes to the revered house of representatives. The republicancontrolled body. Each would have one vote. Its hard to imagine that the congress, elected every two years by the voters, would go against the will of the people. Lets get off fantasy and Conspiracy Theory and talk about california. Should Hillary Clinton lose to Bernie Sanders out there, what does it do to this race . Weve also been talking for many months about how much damage Bernie Sanders is doing to Hillary Clinton by staying in beyond the point where its mathematically possible for him to be the nominee. Kristen welker nailed it when she said Hillary Clinton essentially has the nomination locked up. This is zero sum. Everything sanders does for him is good for him and bad for clinton. Sanders winning california would be damaging to clinton. Although she could mathematically get the nominee, your point is shed be a weakened candidate. Sanders hasnt won a lot of huge and diverse states. If he bests her there, its a very you limp into your own convention at a time when youre supposed to be gathering strength. This neighborhood is among those under water as the brazos river is expected to crest later today. The weatherrelated death toll in texas is up to eight, after a 16yearold boy was killed when a tree branch fell on him during the cleanup effort. This morning, parts of texas are preparing for historic flooding. Rivers expected to reach their highest levels in decades. Overnight, authorities in austin recovered the body of a woman who drowned while tubing in the floodwaters. It shows how dangerous the water can be right now. Reporter high water rescues were under way in simonton. We decided we were going to sit it out, and it wasnt a good idea. Reporter while warden residents are refusing to follow the mandatory evacuation orders. You dont want to leave anymore. Reporter the water in humble reached seven feet in some homes. Natalie just joined us with more on that. Good morning. According to reports, the main suspect who was killed by police was an army veteran. His family claims he suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder after returning from war. It happened over the memorial day weekend. A gunman with a highpowered Assault Rifle unleashing a hail of bullets on an unsuspecting houston community. When a s. W. A. T. Team finally ended the onslaught, the shooter and another man were dead. At least six others, including several responding police officers, were wounded. While authorities have not officially revealed the gunmans name, our nbc affiliate in houston, citing local police sources, identified him as Dionisio Garza iii, an army veteran who served four tours of duty in afghanistan. Nbc news has not independently verified his identity. His father, who shares the same name, spoke to a kprc reporter by phone, saying that while police have not officially confirmed the shooter is his son, he believes it is very likely. Suggesting his son was suffering mentally from his time at war. Really believe this was a ptsd thing. Reporter garza was honorably discharged from active duty in 2014. Since then, his father says he has become disillusioned with the federal government. He was rambling off about the economy collapsing, you know. And that something was going to happen by monday. Reporter as garza reportedly opened fire with an ar15 style Assault Rifle and a handgun. One man, 56yearold eugene linscomb, was killed getting his car washed. Stray bullets likely setting off a blaze at this gas station. Investigators recovered a militarystyle backpack monday at the gas station. Police are hoping the backpack reportedly containing bullets, a birth certificate and several other items, will provide clues to what sparked the chaos that shattered a quiet suburban neighborhood. Police are working to try to confirm whether the backpack belonged to garza. Theyre expected to release more information this afternoon. Well keep you posted. Natalie, thank you. Breaking news overnight. North koreas test launch of a midrange missile failed again, according to south Korean Defense officials. The missile reportedly exploded at a mobile launch pad as soon as the launch button was pushed. If confirmed, it would make it the fourth failed Missile Launch by the north. Holder said Edward Snowden performed a Public Service by stoking a National Debate about secret domestic surveillance programs. The silver car suddenly takes a hard right turn and runs over the top of the motorcycle in the next lane, knocking the male and female passenger to the ground. The car then speeds off. The driver was later arrested and faces aggravated battery charges. The two people on the motorcycle had minor injuries. Lets turn to sports now. The Golden State Warriors are headed back to the nba finals after knocking off the Oklahoma City thunder in game seven of the western conference finals. The death toll has risen to at least nine people in texas following several days of heavy rain thats flooded neighborhoods and washed out bridges. More rain, al says, is on the way. Tense moments during a Bernie Sanders rally in oakland, california. As he was speaking, several protesters tried to rush to the podium. Secret Service Agents surrounded sanders and use td baton on one of the demonstrators. Heres a nice story. The embattled tsa receiving high marks for its performance over the hollowiday weekend. Also this morning, new developments tied to the cincinnati zoos decision to shoot and kill a 400pound gorilla after a 3yearold boy fell into the animals exhibit. Zoo officials here are on defense, defending their security measures, defending their decision to shoot this animal. While critics take aim at the childs mother, the zoo is refusing to place any blame. Reporter this morning, zookeepers point to the videos. Oh, my gosh reporter they say it shows an agitated 400pound gorilla putting a 3yearolds life in danger after the child fell into its enclosure at the cincinnati zoo over the weekend. The zoos director made the difficult call to shoot the animal. He says hed make it again. Were talking about an animal with one hand that ive seen take a coconut and crunch it. You cant take a chrisrisk with silverback gorilla. Reporter anger grows toward the childs mother. An online petition demanding she be charged with neglect. The mother responding on facebook. As a society, were quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off a child. If anyone knows me, i keep a tight watch on my kids. Accidents happen. A subsequent statement thanked the zoo for their actions. The shows the enclosure. A metal railing with wires underneath, four feet of bushes and then a 15foot drop into the mote. Separating people from the habitat. Thats where the boy fell . The barrier is safe. That said, any of us in this room could climb over barriers if we choose. Reporter this morning, the zookeeper who raised harambe the goril gorilla. How intelligent he was, how inquisitive he was, how playful. He was a big boy. He grew up to be something else. He was very special. Reporter harambe was 1 of 11 western lowland gorillas at the cincinnati zoo. One of two silverback. The zoo had plans to use him in their successful breeding program. They refuse to second guess the decision to kill harambe. The people who worked there had a terrible decision to make. Reporter similar incident in chicago in 1996 saw a different outcome. In that case, a 3yearold who also fell into an enclosure, was picked up and, to the awe of many, protected by a female gorilla. The mother in the 1996 case was not charged, and the mother in this case is not being charged either. Police say there is no evidence of any crime. Theyre not even launching an investigation. While the mothers identity is not being disclosed this morning, we can tell you that she is an administrator at a local daycare here, helping to take care of other peoples children. Now something we told you about earlier in the show. 13 years after she was nearly killed by a shark off the coast of hawaii, the socalled soul surfer, Bethany Hamilton, turned into in an impressive performance in fiji. Keir simmons has more. What a competitor Bethany Hamilton is in surfing and life. She has one arm and her baby son traveling with her, and finishes third in a huge surfing competition. This morning, she says, quote, shes reporter her performance, incredible and unexpected. The soul surfer, Bethany Hamilton, stunning everyone at a championship competition in fiji. 26yearold eliminating some of the worlds best surfers. Im so happy. It feels really good. Reporter taking on wave after monster wave. Making it all the way to the semifinals, after entering the competition as a wild card. Her breathtaking run, the latest triumph in a career that was nearly cut short when she was a young prodigy. In 2003, at the age of 13, hamilton went surfing off the coast of hawaii. A massive tiger shark attacked, biting down on her left arm. The teen did her best to stay calm and made it back to shore. At the time, describing the experience on today. It happened so fast. There wasnt time to scream at the moment. Then after that, i was focusing on getting to the beach. Reporter hamiltons arm was completely severed, but the horrific attack didnt stop her from returning to the water just weeks later. Her love for surfing, she says, helping to conquer her fear. I think all of us have that passion in us, where different things, it may not be surfing, but whatever your passion is, to just go for it. Reporter since the attack, hamilton has won several major surfing competitions and has dedicated herself to charitable foundations, large and small. Whoa love it. Reporter today, so am i. Ever wonder what germs are lurking in the water . To find out, im going undercover, taking samples. Got it. Got it. Reporter sending them off to a certified lab. This time, it isnt just the visual dirt down under or clumps of hair floating on top. Were testing for the bacteria you cant see that can actually make you sick. Ready to test. Reporter lets start at this public pool. Got it. Reporter our test revealing something called enterococcai. Simply put, fecal matter. Maybe this water park will be better. Now back to the lazy river. Reporter before i get too comfortable, the test reveals shocking results. Total coliform. Enterococci and e. Coli. A perfect cocktail to make you sick. We found the same, disgusting bacteria in these two pools, as well. Yup, youre swimming in it. It means someone went to the bathroom and didnt clean themselves properly or actually went to the bathroom in the pool. Reporter we shared our results with an er doctor. I thought the chlorine and the chemicals they put in the pool kill the bacteria. It cleans some of it but not all of it. The heat in the pool allows the bacteria to thrive. It thrives best in a heated pool . Exactly. Reporter its about to get worse. Both pools and, yes, even the lazy river, also contains pseudomonas. What are pseudomonas . They cause a rash and can get into your bloodstream, making you very sick. Reporter in fact, only one pool we tested came back completely clean. Hang on, we found a different problem there. Not because it went bad or spoiled, but the date stamps are confusing and misleading to consumers. Reporter when it comes to wasting food, america leads the way. Contrary to popular belief, the dates on food are not telling you the food is bad or it will make you sick. Theyre really just the manufacturers best guess for when the product is at its freshest. Reporter this year, 90 of foods will end up in the trash once it hits the date on the package, wasting 160 billion pounds and costing the average family of four upwards of 1,500. Now, congress is taking a crack at solving the problem. Introducing the food date labeling act, to help consumers figure out the use by and sell by system that some argue is subjective and baseless. The reality is, the dates are not an exact science. Every state has a different law. Theres no uniformity or consistency across the country. This just adds to the confusion about these dates. Reporter the bill, if passed, will establish a uniform National Date labeling system, that indicates whether the food is unsafe to eat and not just past the peek freshness. Im sure my other classmates were, too, but i spoke up about it. She was like, i want black girls to be the main character. Everyone should read these. I said, how many books . A thousand books. Okay. Sure. Theres your book. Theres your book. Reporter marleys campaign, a thousand black girl books, was born. Her idea, collect a thousand books about black goals and donate them to libraries and schools in need. People are doing it mostly online, although the phone is also possible. It takes ten minutes or less. The big players in the market, Rocket Mortgage, lenda, doing refies, and sofi. This is a good time to have financing locked in before you shop for a home. Not only spring, but its a sellers market. Were low on inventory, and its making everything a little more competitive. If you can go to a seller and say, hey, ive already got financing, youre in much better shape. You said its not a new mortgage, its a new process of getting a mortgage. How exactly does that work . You go online. Create an account. Basically, you give it enough personal information about you so that it can reach out and get all your documentation. Things like your birth date and your Social Security number and your bank account numbers. It goes out and pulls all that paperwork. If youve ever gotten a mortgage, you know that getting all the paperwork, thats what takes the most time. This is where the secret sauce is. If you havent seen it, the video is unnerving for so many reasons. Obviously, the little boy is okay. No critical injuries. This gorilla, 17pound 400pound male who is 17 years old, harambe. The child, according to witnesses, told his mom that he wanted to go swimming. This is what has been reported. Some point, the child slips either under or over, and there have been conflicting reports about that, as well. The zoo officials believe he went over something and fell 10 to 12 feet into the mote. Harambe heard a splash. Two female gorillas were immediately call sboed into thin area. He did not leave. Then took the child for ten minutes. People were helpful for ten weve been on the show now eight minutes. Two or three more minutes longer than what weve been on with you right now, thats how long the child was in there with the gorilla. We have video of the enclosu enclosure. Where they believe the child slipped through. This is theres vegetarian. The bottom line is, right now, despite what people have been saying online, theres a change. Org petition, 200,000 people called on the mom to be charged. Investigative authorities have not indicated itll be the case. Theres also questions about the cincinnati zoo. When your major clientele are children, making sure theres nothing, even if a parent turns their eye for a minute or two, that a 3yearold can fit through. Zoos around the world i worked at the ft. Worth zoo for a second. They are held to a strong standard. They have people who come in and investigate. They do a lot of things to make sure these enclosures dont have this problem. Theres a lot going on here. The family released a statement. They thanked god for the childs safety. I dont know. What do you think . Harambe was shot, the gorilla. Some people have questioned, well, couldnt they have tranquilized him . No. The zoo officials have said they could not tranquilize. It would take time. Would have agitated him. And been more aggressive with the child. We have the zoo director defending the decision to shoot marambe. Were talking about an animal with one hand that ive seen take a coconut and crunch it. You cant take a risk with a silverback gorilla. The barrier is safe. That same, any of us in this room could climb over bar yourr if we choose. They made the call. It was the correct call. Its easy for everybody to attack this mom. But nothing had happened like this before. Right. You know, ive misplaced my kids have gotten away from me. You turn away. It happens. You try to be an attentive parent. Sometimes, things happen. You know, for people to turn on this woman, i think, is thats what made me sad. We dont read the comment sections. Its not healthy for many reasons. Half the time, people write things they dont mean. But there was a viciousness i saw even in some of the headlines, directed at this mom. We have yet to hear what happened. You guys know, i always say, the fastest thing in the world is a 3yearold boy or a gazelle. You have boys, as well. They have a way of being able to sneak around and hide and play hide and seek. They think theyre playing, too. Things happen. Its heartbreaking. As parents, it doesnt take much. You turn to another kid for 15 seconds, turn around and go, whered they go . The reason this is a terrible story is because of what happened to the beautiful animal. Were happy the kid is okay, but its heartbreaking. At the same token, dragging the mom through the mud isnt productive. Doesnt help anybody at all. No. Weve seen this happen at our plaza.
