Across the country this week. We will tell you what to expect. Breaking this morning the nfl superstar Peyton Manning will announce his retirement tomorrow. Off the super bowl win with the denver broncos. And polar plunge from fallon to gaga and now a chilling bit this morning in chicago. Why they are freezing for a reason today this sunday, march 6th, 2016. Announcer from nbc news, this is today live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today on this sunday morning. Im erica hill. As we mentioned, dylan drier is in chicago for the annual polar plunge for Special Olympics. We will do that live on television and it should be interesting. That are it will and a little chilly. The top story, is the president ial race and the Super Saturday result. Donald trump notching two more big wins in kentucky and louisiana. Ted cruz had a strong showing take kansas and maine. Donald trump at 392 and 305 for cruz. 130 for rubio. As for the democrats, Bernie Sanders won more states and took kansas and nebraska. Clinton took louisiana despite her two second place finishes, clinton got the lead with the delegate count and almost halfway to the number needed to secure the nomination. We have coverage for both races with gabe gutierrez. Good morning. Donald trump seemed unstoppable, but now ted cruz is picking up steam and trump is calling on marco rubio to dropout. Hoping to emerge as the antitrump, ted cruz is soaring after Super Saturday. We are seeing that after the campaign. Ours is the only campaign that repeatedly beaten donald trump. The senator pulling off victories in kansas and maine. Donald trump stilt frontrunner in louisiana and kentucky. I want to congratulate ted on maine and kansas. He should do well there because its close to canada. Trying to fend off the gop. Donald trump is a phony, a fraud. The first contest and trump skips the Political Action conference being a distant third in the straw poll. We should come together and stop this foolishness. Marco rubio in kansas was fourth in maine. He hopes to scrape up delegates in puerto ricos primary and campaign overnight. Given the make up of the electoral amount. He is feeling the heat in florida, the home state. Cruz is upping the ground game, trying to squeeze out rubio and make it a twoman race and trump calling on the senator to dropout. I would love to take on ted one on one. That would be fun. He cant win new york or pennsylvania or california or new jersey. I want ted one on one, okay . Here in florida more than a half million republicans have voted early or afternoon. The entire race if it werent out of a movie, john kasich is campaigning in his home state of ohio with arnold schwarzenegger. Gabe gutierrez in jacksonville. Thank you. Bernie sanders picks up kansas and nebraska. Hillary clinton countered with louisiana that widened her lead. In michigan where the candidates will debate later tonight. Good morning. Senator sanders is looking for momentum and she has got it. Secretary clinton did net more delegates and was far ahead in the delegate count making her very much the one to beat. Riding high off of nebraska and kansas, Bernie Sanders in detroit saturday. We will win if we have a large voter turn out. Secretary clinton at that dinner had reason to celebrate, earning a victory in delegates in louisiana. I am thrilled we are adding to our delegate count. Punctuating the lead, each focused on whats ahead. I am grateful to everyone who turned out to support us. Now all eyes are on michigan. With michigan voting tuesday, clinton is not taking anything for granted. The former president bill clinton and daughter chelsea will campaign here. He wants to prove he can be competitive and focused on independence. The race for the white house is to win democrats and win independence and make sure trump does not win. Both preparing to face off at a debate where sanders will likely take aim over the support of nasa. Clinton will paint herself as the candidate with the realistic policies and there will be no shortage for the republican contender. Really you want to pull your hair out when you see that insult that goes on. On our work day, we will be better than the republicans. Both candidates will get ready for tonights debate and the flint water crisis will be a key topic demanding specifics from the candidates. It resonated across the country, specifically with africanamericans. Nbcs director and moderator, good morning to you. Good to see you. Good morning. This was the first since romneys passionate plea to dump trump. How real is the possibility that the antitrump forces are starting to pick up speed and this is a twoman race . There two ways to lock at what happened. Maybe ted cruz has momentum, splitting the four states and netting donald trump. Four states that will close the contest meaning they couldnt participate. The one primary that cruz caught up and did very well against trump and louisiana touches the state of texas. What happened tuesday. Michigan, mississippi. Those are places that trump heavily favors. If we see him struggle there, i think it is time to connect the dots back to thursday from romney to that debate to a coalescing. I can tell you this. One clear piece of evidence is if there is an antitrump candidate, its cruz. Marco rubio, i dont think its going to be him. In florida, ted cruz is really focusing there. He is really trying to steal that momentum. What happens to marco rubio moving forward . Florida is everything for him. He needed to win somewhere else in this in between with the two super tuesdays. It doesnt look like he has that opportunity at all. What he has to fear in mississippi and gish began, he put focus on both states. What if rubio finishes fourth in both states a week before he tries to win the primary. That could zap momentum for him. There is a lot of pressure to at least show some life in michigan or mississippi if he has hope of catching trump in florida. Lets go to the democrats and picking up tuesday. These states, they pick up largely homogonous. I want to show you the delegate count so they can see where this stands. Hillary clinton with almost twice as many delegates as Bernie Sanders. Is there even a path for sanders to victory at this point . It would mean hillary would have to collapse and he would have to win more than 60 . We are at the point that he to win more than 60 of all remaining to capture the nomination, but yesterday is a prime example. He won tuesday. She won one. She won africanamericans by such a large margin and won the state by a large margin. She doesnt lose by the same margins that he loses to her. I think the path is becoming less and less viable by the day for him. Thank you very much. We will be watching you on meet the press. Former president ial nominee mitt romney. We want to turn to the wild weather in northern california. Its the start of what will be a big storm system to roll across the country. We will have the forecast in a moment, but we have more details. After a relatively dry february, march is turning out to be very wet on the west coast. The series of storms on the pacific caused massive flooding overnight in california claiming at least one life. High winds up to 40 Miles Per Hour blew across northern california, dumping heavy rain that should continue off and on throughout the day. Trees down, Power Outages across the city of sacramento. The storm drenching neighborhoods and submerging cars and homes. Its anymore knee deep. Highway 70 is overflowing. The storm created a river before the highway 55 overpass, swallowing a car with two people and tried to circomvent a blockade. Water was knee deep and it took the dive team a while to find it. The woman 48 under water for 15 minutes didnt make it. The male driver was able to get out. The wet elements and lower ground are expected to bring up to three feet of snow to the mountains. Dozens of flights to sacramento were delayed and could cause more problems today. In chicago, she will be taking that into the chilly waters of lake michigan. We have more on that in a moment. Lets talk about the weather out west and what we can expect across the country. Another couple of rounds of this weather out west. Each will get easier. We had the bulk of heavy rain yesterday where we had eight inches of rain and wind gusts of 88 Miles Per Hour. It was a wild system yesterday and we will see more wet weather tonight and tomorrow and another storm on tuesday. We are looking at an additional two to four inches of rain and two to four feet of snow in the mountains. As the storm system is onshore, we are looking at the possibility not of the outbreak, but down into texas and large hail and flash flooding. We need to focus on the rivers as this transitions to heavier rain and could end up with three or more inches of rain and that could lead to river flooding with the set up where you get the s good sunday morning to you. Meteorologist anthony slaughter here. Lingering showers in the area. You can see a band making the way through the east bay now and rain in the south bay. Interstate 80. If youre on it, you race through places like carney, nebraska. But this time of year it is hard not to notice the birds here. Yes, those are birds in the sky. Thousands and thousands of snow geese migrating northward, slowing down for a rest. Talk about a roadside attraction. 20 million or so birds would be offended to hear nebraska referred to as a flyover state. The birds and their ancestors have spent every spring here for several thousand millennia. These are sand hill cranes, mike forsbe forsberg, a photographer, author and conservationist has been watching the cranes for more than 20 years. It would be like missing christmas. Reporter this is good. This is really good. Revered since ancient times, mike says the graceful elegant birds dance sometimes because theyre nervous, sometimes because theyre in love. And sometimes because they just like to dance. But the best time to watch them is at first light, with the golden moon in the western sky, you can barely see the birds, and you sure can hear them. The cranes spend the night on the bank and the sandbars of the plat river and as day break comes, the birds get louder and louder, building to a dramatic crescendo, a wakeup call the likes of which you have never heard. Crane lovers come from all over the country, and all over the world, to visit audubons rose sanctuary. Lynn hobsa cant wait to see the birds up close. Youre all pumped up. I am. I cant help it.
