Vice President Joe Biden announced his sons death in a statement saying beau biden passed away at Walter Reed Medical Center saturday night after a, quote valiant fight. He was surrounded by his entire family including his wife, parents and children. Those who knew beau biden say he was a Public Servant with a big heart and broad smile who valued family above all else. Vice President Biden announced his sons passing late saturday night writing in a statement it is with broken hearts that halle, hunter, ashley, jill and i announce the passing of our husband, brother and son beau after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life. President obama also writing in part michelle and i are grieving. Beau biden was a friend of ours. Going on to write that biden was a man who made a difference in the lives of all he touched and he lived on in their hearts. The younger biden was diagnosed with brain cancer nearly two years ago. A diagnosis he and his family largely kept private. Still after aggressive treatment he was given a clean bill of health. But earlier this year he suffered a relapse, and was admitted to walter reed a week and a half ago. Born in 1969 in wilmington, delaware, Joseph Robinette beau biden became a promising politician serving as delawares 44th attorney general. He was also an iraq war veteran, awarded the bronze star. But his greatest high orty his wife hallie and his two children. For the bidens this is not the first time tragedy has struck. In 1972 beau was a little boy when he was injured in a car accident that killed his sister and mother. His father, joe biden, had just been elected to the u. S. Senate, and was famously sworn in at beaus bedside. A heavy topic that beau talked about while introducing his father at the 2008 Democratic National convention. One of my earliest memories was being in that hospital. My dad always at my side. We, my brother and i, not the senate, were all that he cared about. Condolences are now pouring in. For a young man whose future seemed as bright as his fathers. Biden was widely expected to run for the governor of delaware in 2016. I cant tell you what a fine person he was, and how much all of us who really cared about him and knew him well are really feeling this loss for the whole family. Just a terrible loss. At the young age of 46, on the national stage, chuck, he was, of course, known by many people across the country as the Vice President s son. But as andrea just alluded to on the local level he was also very dedicated to serving his community. You know he was. In fact he, you know, he wasnt so ambitious that he put politics in front of sort of public service. You know when he won his first stint as attorney general in 2006 the assumption was he was going to try to go on some fast track to replace his father in the u. S. Senate when his father became Vice President. And he had an opportunity to run for his dads senate seat and he said no because he felt as if it would break a commitment that he made when he ran for attorney general, and instead he ran for reelection as attorney general, and look, he got high marks. He had to deal with some very high profile, very tough cases. As an attorney general might in any state. He handled it with dignity, with grace. Look joe biden and beau biden were fathers and sons have bonds everywhere. These two were forged because of tragedy. They were best friends. Joe biden spends every weekend and has been even more, made a more of a concerted effort over the last year to spend every weekend at home in delaware because his son was fighting this and he didnt want to miss a moment. The Associated Press reports that a paramedic traveling with kerrys motorcade examined the secretary of state after his bike apparently hit a curb. Theyre enthusiastic. And what better way to learn than if youre interested in something . Amy rosenstein first brought skype into her classroom six years ago when a friend moved to hong kong. While she initially used the video chats to stay in touch, as many people now do across the globe she soon realized her live chats could add a new dimension to her lessons. The results were beyond my wildest dreams. Since then shes helped her students visit 25 countries. Meeting people from paris to new zealand. Learning how they lived. In your country near an ocean . Even chatting with fellow students like this class in barcelona. The focus of a mystery class. Do you border france . Yes. An opportunity for these third graders to test their knowledge. Do you live in spain . Yes and learn much more in the process. What do you do when the weather gets really bad . We watch dvds and play scrabble. We value a third grader having an important question having adults respond you to is a really empowering thing. Across the globe more than 400,000 educators are now actively using skype in their classroom. I think its great to continue going on real field trips in real life. I think a lot of schools dont have the budgets for that anymore. And this is a way to travel virtually. Say adios. Adios it was really cool to see. I would love for my kids to have this in her classroom. I asked amy who her dream skypes were. She said astronauts at the International Space station and she said the president. How cool it would be for the kids to actually have a chat with the white house. She has sent letters. She hasnt heard back. But in case anybody at the white house or the International Space station is watching, you have third graders in ardsly, new york, who are ready for you. Its a great idea. Which makes getting on the bus and going to the fire house seem so oldfashioned. Although what she was saying is its also a great way to integrate, she gave the example of china. So theyll skype with other kids in hong kong, then supplement that, too, because theyre studying china in third grade and social studies with a trip to see a performance by a chinese dance troupe. So she loves that its sort of an additional dimension and a lot cheaper than field trips which is a concern for a lot of schools.
