We continue to see some stunning pictures from the top of the world at mt. Everest. Look at this. As the avalanche took place it hit the base camp at everest. The avalanche flattening part of the camp killing at least 17 people there. This was the deadliest day in nearly 100 years of expeditions at this location. Utter destruction. It follows of course last year which has been the deadliest day. 16 sherpas killed there which cancelled the climbing season. That is our top story this is morning. The devastating seen in nepal and on mt. Everest. More than 2,000 are dead across the country. Aftershocks shaking the region. So many people trapped in the rubble. And trapped up higher in the danger zone. We start things off with her this morning. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning erica. As you mentioned about 2,100 confirmed dead now. At least 17 of them on mt. Everest. The number of missing unknown. And the danger is still very real this morning. More strong aftershocks have triggered more avalanches on everest. And the risk of more buildings falling down. As daylight broke over nepal, rescuers searched for miracle survivors in the endless rubble. Some were pulled out align but the number of dead and injured continues to climb. Thousands are being treated at makeshift hospitals. With at least 20 aftershocks rattling the region people are sleeping and living in streets and parks. On mt. Everest rescues are beginning. The quake struck at the height of the climbing season. Hundreds of climbers remain stranded at base camps and worries about more aftershocks and avalanches. From this glacier today and it didnt seem so good. Seemed a little scary. Climber tweeting aftershock at 1 00 p. M. Horrible in camp one. Avalanches on three sides. We worry about ice fall team below. Alive . More than a thousand for on the mountain when the quake struck triggers a massive avalanche. Some hiding beeing bind behind boulders. Google engineer his second everest trek. Avalanche came through camp. And he seemed already at first. But then wasnt. And then he ultimately passed away. Actress sophiefia bush once dated him. She tweeted there are no adequate word. Today injured sherpas were brought off the mexican train. Many are still waiting to hear whether their loved oned sur eds survived. He and his team were rocked by an aftershock shortly after they got to the airport. Richard, what can you tell us. Reporter this is a city where people are now living on the streets. You see behind me a park. People have set up tents, brought their families, cooking poot pots. They are afraid to go back into their homes because of the many aftershocks. We experienced one shortly after our arrival today. It was a 6. 7 aftershock that lastsed about a minute. Suddenly the building started moving. The airport officials ran away. The police went to find safer cover. We did as well. But then just a few minutes later it was back to business as usual, although with this fear that you could have more aftershocks or even another major quake. And thats why so many people are living here. The same is also true for foreigners. There are not that many major hotels in the city. But the ones that are here that cater to Foreign Tourists are running in a state of semievacuation. They arent allowing people to go into their rooms, but they could stay in the lobby spaces and use the bathrooms. The Foreign Tourists who are here are sleeping most of them out in front of their hotels in the lawns and gardens. It is very difficult now to get in and out of katmandu. And get in and out of nepal. When we arrived at the airport, we saw a line perhaps a kilometer long of locals who were waiting to leave. It is a very calm situation here. That is one of the most overwhelming things we noticed. People are nervous but they are staying very calm. Were hearing as many as 400 may be traps on everest now. His wife from santa monica says it sounds trite, but he literally died doing what he loved. Interesting, though and good to hear from richard, you know we see so many times in these devastating aftermaths how hard it can be. Good to hear about the calm and everybody coming together there. Other stories were watching right now closer to home. President obamas emails were hacked by the russians. Now, that could obviously be a serious security breech. Kristin welker has more on that for us this morning. Reporter good morning to you. According to the New York TimesRussian Hackers swemt up far more information from the white houses unclassified servers during a cyber attack last october than original thought, even gaining access to the president s emails. These were unclassified emails according to the times. The hackers could have gained access to emails with diplomats and legislation. The white house told me they have no comment at this point. The hacking in october lead to a partial shut down of the white houses email system. The hackers appeared to be kicked off the email by mid october. This isnt the first time the president has been hacked. In the 2008 election hackers broke into then senator obama and senator mccains email systems. One official telling me hackers try to break into the Computer Systems here at the white house almost every day. And countering that threat is an ongoing and pressing challenge. Thank you. Tensions are reaching a breaking point in baltimore with demonstrations turning violent overnight and at least a dozen arrests. But he has acknowledged that his department has a lot of work to do. Were a Police Department that faces many struggles and many challenges. Over the years we have had a number of incidents that have tarnished this badge and the reputation of this department. Reporter a wake for gray is set for later today. The Stormy Weather in the south as we talked so much about yesterday has lead to tragedy during a sailboat race. Good morning. At least four people are missing and one person is dead after a regatta accident in alabama. It happened saturday off Dolphin Island after a powerful storm tore through the sailing event causing several boats to capsize. Overnight family members waited for word as coast guard crewed searched for the missing boaters. A harrow night for those who made it out alive. I really thought i was going to die, actually. I was really scared. The water kept coming in and the boat was going to sink. That would be the end. The storm knocked out power to more than 23,000 people in coastal alabama. Authorities are investigating a shooting at minneapolis airport. Two suspicious people were in the hertz rental car year. Police fired back wounding the suspect who was taken to the hospital. Police in washington, d. C. Are asking for the publics help in finding a suspect who attacked a man at a metro train station. Watch as the suspect violently punches the 69yearold victim. Everest by an avalanche triggered by the quake. He was one of the climbers who died. Fredinburg headed up privacy at google x, but he was one of the bright ones when it came to saving the planet. Fredinburg planned to plant a flag on top of mt. Everest to bring awareness to the cause. We spoke to one of his closest friends last night. Basically, i heard an avalanche came through camp and he seemed all right at first, but then wasnt and then he ultimately passed away. He is the most incredible person ive ever met in my life. His will to do anything is beyond anyone else ive seen. A private Memorial Service is planned for today. Well a group of physicians from Stanford Universitys department of emergency medicine is currently on standby gathering supplies and waiting for word on whether they need to fly out and help. Some of them were instrumental in the initial teaching of the nepal ambulance service. Meanwhile, an elite team of First Responders from Southern California is also on standby this morning. They could be sent to nepal at any time to help with search and Recovery Efforts following that deadly quake. The team consists of about 65 people and at least one rescue dog. They have been deployed to a number of natural disasters, including earthquakes in new zealand, haiti and japan. Coming up at 7 00 on today in the bay, a triumphant return from the big easy.
