The French Interior minister they found handguns, bullet proof vests and detailed documents showing he planned to attack the churches on sunday. The man in custody is also suspected in the death of 32yearold, a dancer and mother of a 5yearold girl. The french woman was shot possibly during a botched carjacking terror experts say it fits the pattern of jihadists telling followers to wage war at home. Look, you are in france, you are in britain, in australia, do not come to syria. Attack the homeland. Attack our enemies within our cities reporter france has been on high alert since january when islamist 34i8 i at that particular times aing taed the french magazine and a jewish store killing 17. The interior minister said this man talked about going to syria and police even checked up on him in 2014 and again at some point this year. It was a peaceful protest, a lot of families, parents holding childrens hands telling me they dont want this thing to happen to their child. The question they have is how is it possible that freddie gray had his spinal cord nearly severed while in Police Custody . They want answers, accountability, last night the chief says he understands those concerns i think again they are sharing their thoughts, their concerns and i hear them and i understa and if i was a parent and that was my child i lost i would be concerned and i want to know and our job is also to have balance and not to rush to a conclusion. Reporter prosecutors say the jury should impose the death sentence in part because the bombings were planned in advance to cause a maximum of death, pain and suffering, and they showed a picture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev they say reveals a complete lack of remorse. Prosecutors said Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs bombs killed three people on the streets who had time to feel pain but no time to say goodbye. He was determined they said to become americas Worst Nightmare. The jury was shown a photo of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev showing an offensive gesture taken in a holding cell at the court house as he awaited a Court Hearing three months after the bombing. A prosecutor said it showed he was unconcerned, unrepentant, uncaring and untouched by the grief and loss he caused. Some jurors wept as victims told stories of suffering caused by the marathon bomb. Some of the testimony from bill campbell, whose daughter crystal was one of three People Killed in the bombing. As his wife sobbed in the courtroom, he said he passed out in the hospital when he realized that the woman in surgery was not his daughter. Crystal, the doctors told him, was dead. The sentencing phase of this case has a lot of similarity in the trial of zacarias moussaoui, the 9 11 coconspirator who was tried for the Death Penalty but received a life in prison. You have certainly been there before, you have an unsympathetic defendant, frankly, a heart wrenching crime, you have these terrible stories from victims and then this picture of the defendant that came out in court where hes literally giving the middle finger to a security camera. What is the defenses argue snumt that certainly isnt helpful when he decided to make that ge you have to embrace everything thats happening as the lawyer and maintain your credibility. If the family story makes you cry, cry and be authentic and get ready to make your final argument to save his life. One of the most arguments in the moussaoui case he wanted to be a martyr. You argued he wants to die. Thats his plan. Dont give him what he wants. Could a similar argument work in this c absolutely. All of the terrorists like this gentleman all want to die, thats what they really want to do. You can see just from the pictures of him bringing the bombs to the scene, and the way they reacted that everybody in the jury box is going to know he wants to die. So you have to figure out a subtle way to make that message. In moussaouis case it wasnt his choice whether to testify, go before jurors and plead for his life. If you are his lawyer would you suggest he do so . You think he could help himself . I dont think he could. If he testified and he acted like he wanted to live and he was tried to look repentant for what he did it would be everybody would see through it and undercut the defense that he wants to die which i think is his best chance that the jury wont give him what he wants. They havent yet in a terrorism case in america. Last thing Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is in Supermax Prison in colorado, expla in what that life is like because thats the alternative in this case for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. We had a prison expert who testified, 23 hours a day in solitary confinement, its a cell that doesnt even have Natural Light into it. I imagined her being in the playground and nobody playing with her. I imagined her going through high school not having dates. Because thats what she was at the time to me. Now it seems very odd on my tongue to say her. Reporter while driving home one day with the kids she nearly had a terrible car accident. I said to myself if this was the moment where i lost her, what would i have wanted to have done . Would i want to force her to be mia that one last day . And i think at that point my mind was made up. Reporter last june they showed jacob a video about another transgender little boy. What did you think when you saw that . I think being transgender wasnt so bad after all. Reporter after watching the video over and over again, they gave their 4yearold a choice. I explained to him we can bring you to a new school and everyone will know you as a boy from the beginning. Reporter what did you say to your mom and dad . I want to be a boy. Reporter he was only 4 when you made the transition. Some people will say thats really young. How can you be sure . How could he be sure . Hed already spent half of his life telling us that he was a boy. Reporter he hasnt had any medical procedures not on hormones. No. Reporter way too soon for that. Way too soon for that. The big place for gender is our brain, our heart, and our soul. Identity. Who we are. Which isnt parts. Its about taking items that are going to be tossed away and finding a new purpose for them. We do it all the time in design and our shows. But earth day is a perfect example. In the yard if youre looking for things to do dont buy an expensive set to do something. This is a prime example of what weve got here. This is made out of an old tire someone was going to discharge. Go to a tire store or find this sitting somewhere. Or steal it off someones truck. No dont do that. But i used to work at a tire store, theyd just throw them away. You can get them clean them up. Paint them with an exterior paint. And they make a good tub. And also they dont want this gigantic sandbox. This is portable. Throw some sand in here. Obviously with this tire you need tiny children to fit in it. They can sit on the edge. Exactly. And you actually just this is a pool noodle. Its not a litter box. But you use a pool noodle along the edge because it can be rough here. Once its cleaned up paint it up. The kids get involved in creating this. And if you live in a party of the country where it rains a lot, make a lid for it and cover it up. Exactly. This is just plywood but you can treat it. This is a few hour project and it costs you just the price of the sand probably. All right. Lets move on. This is one i hadnt thought of. This is a picnic table made out of old skateboards. Everyone has four to six skateboards lying around the house. Or if youre like my dad, he would hate when the kids would skateboard on his lawn. Steal those. Youre talking about stealing twice so far. Were terrible people. If you go to craigslist or Something Like that you can find old ones. How much would you pay for that . If theyre old and used people can give them away. Youll be amazed what you can get online for free. Did you buy or build this frame . Built that. Thats something that will take maybe half an hour to an hour. The skateboards, everyone knows them for having cool designs. You can blend the different patterns and colors. We have a new contractor on our hands here. Can i replace jonathan with you on the show . And this is about trying to find interesting ways. Kids love the designs on a skateboard. This is meant for kids maybe under 5 years old. Skateboards are meant for a lot of weight. Thats a reason this is a cool idea. It can even take my weight. Im not going to make you sit here you might rip your pants. Thank you very much. Now were going to recycle and upcycle an old shipping palette. Yes. This another idea. You put it underneath. You get some potting soil to put in here so you can have vegetables. All you do is wrap the entire bottom with the landscape material. Get it in place. Nail it down. Then you can actually clad the exterior of the box. Nail it on. Its actually gorgeous. And you can put vegetables whatever you want. And this is something small for a patio. Or you can cut it down and have wheels on the bottom if you want to move it around. The doctors and nurses are starting to wear tutus every tuesday to cheer up young patients. So this all started when an operating room assistant decided to wear a tutu over his scrubs for a child who was nervous, a little scared while heading into surgery. And quickly, of course, cheered the child up and put him as ease. But now the staff and all the departments including nutmeg their therapy dog there is wearing the tutu. You see by the bright smiles on the kids faces and the staff too. I mean, that puts a smile on the staffs face too. Thats great. I think more hospitals should think about Something Like that. Well, a lot of them have great programs. The Childrens Hospital in chicago they make it a point of making that environment as warm and as comfortable as possible. Toss it in the freezer. If you keep them in the freezer, it wont harden up. And you can reuse them. They wont get too hard in the freezer. Even in a fridge is fine. As long as this is airtight. Also use a plastic bag if its airtight. Just keep the paint on there. I like this trick. This is to keep it from making a mess. Using a rubber band. You can use the edge of the can but it drips. Lot of big sweeping themes. Big movie to pick for your, you know, feature directal debut. Youve done other things. Lot of complications involved. Thats why it was so compelling you know, because it was so all encompassing, so big, little independent australian film budget it seemed impossible so thats probably why i wanted to do it. Wow. When looking at the script and seeing the scenes over in turkey, war, huge, storm scenes sweeping australian background scenes arent you thinking as a producer and director chaching, chaching. Going to cost a fortune . Yeah. But when working on an independent film i came out of an independent film i came out of the camera when i was 6 and doing lead roles and feature films for 25 years, i came out of an independent film background ands the rule in independent film is you want to do something clever but you need to do it to less money than the next guy. Yeah. So, you know, with cgi and a few other things thats pretty expensive actually, not cheaper there are ways you can create those big moments. Without actually building the set. Yeah. Without physically creating everything. One of the things you notice when watching this is how everyones head seems to be so deep in the story and reading the back story of how you got your actors prepared for this in australia australia you took them back in so many ways. Describe what you did. Out of prison basically put them in prison. Thats fine. A bit of torture involved. Nothing you wouldnt be used to. Exactly. And then they want to do the roles, its going to be a big movie, so did anybody complain . First of all, give us an idea of what you didder to tore russly to them . Day during a boot camp would start with a long walk in the morning followed by yoga, followed by a weight session, followed by horse riding followed by weapon work, 50 kilometer bike ride. Any lunch involved here . Occasionally. Wine . Occasionally we would have something to eat every now and then. These guys are surfer dudes. No wine, though. I have a bar on the farm and i told them that at the end of the ten days, if they did well i would take them to the pub. Never doing a movie with you. That was the carrot at the end. Ill take you to the pub. And so on the night they all get scrubbed up. They shave. Theyre feeling fantastic. Week of exercise. You know, so i get them to meet me at this building that theyve done all of their lectures in some of their physical prep and all that. Theyre standing there all dressed up and shaved, ready to go theyre going to go out and meet the young ladies around, whatever. So i take them on a walk back through the building that theyve been through, but the opposite opposite way they normally arrived. By the time they get to the end of the building theres a door there which they would have passed 50 times through the course of the week. Yeah. But now its open and theres a bar and theres bar maids and music. Theyre like this has been here all week . Hiding from them. This is such an emotional movie. You need the kleenexs for this. There are scenes with you and your sons and this must have been i mean having children yourself. Handsome. Sons, must have changed just how you act in this movie i would imagine . Not really but it definitely connected me. Theres a cultural connection to parts of this story because im a new zealand born australian and the battle is often seen as the moment wheres those young nations were forged. They had been to wars before but as an extension of the british empire. This is the first time theyre fighting and its a volunteer force. Its not like regular army or the britain called for volunteers to help defend itself and friends in europe and hundreds of thousands of Young Australians put up their hands. Thats an important thing. The fact that its a story about a man with three sons who go to war and dont come back and his grief as a father of two, as you said, thats going to hit me at a very essential level. There was also another opportunity that i could see in the script to reshape the way people perceived this. Because quite often in war films and also in our remembrance of the sacrifice we pick a side, dont we . We pick a side and we actually its not that we color the other side necessarily we just put them in such darkness. Right. We dont know them. We dehumanize them. And, you know does the opposite of that. I try to bring out the other side so you simply see that in any armed conflict, youre going to have bravery, compassion, and grief on both sides. On both sides. Families mourn. I just want to ask one last question, hoda. Yeah. Did you have trouble with your leading man . We heard hes difficult, impossible to deal with.
