Good morning, willie. You have flown numerous times with Harrison Ford not since 2011. How would you describe him as a pilot . Harrison is very meticulous in his flying. Does extra training, more than is required. Ive seen him into an incredibly thorough preflight of his helicopter before our flight in helicopter, and very cautious and capable. We hear this is a world war ii era training plane. What does ma mean . Is it more safe . Less safe than we might expect . It is a vintage airplane designed only about 30 years after the Wright Brothers flew. So there are dynamics of it of course are from that era, and modern training airplane would handle differently in some environments. Certainly its a safe airplane, goes through the same faa inspections any modern airplane has to go through so they can be challenging to fly but harrison is a capable pilot and flown the plane a lot and does well have it. Based on what you heard and the information you gathered the last 24 hours what were the last minutes like for Harrison Ford as he brought it in by all accounts pretty admirably on that golf course . He did a very admirable job, as a matter of fact. Pilots all the time we train for always looking for a place to go should there be a problem, and particularly after takeoff. What are you going to do looking at the environment around every runway end to determine where you should go, should something go wrong. Harrison had few options there, in this particular case around santa monica but he did a really excellent job of finding the right spot, putting the plane down safely without injuring anyone. The ntsb is investigating another frightening plane scare a delta jetliner skidding off a runway during thursdays snowstorm at laguardia airport. A few hours ago cranes came in and removed the plane so air traffic can get back to normal at laguardia. From our Vantage Point here, you get a good sense how much water surrounds this airport. It is a notoriously difficult place to land, all of the water, short runways and in bad weather it only gets harder. Passengers on delta flight 1086 say the landing felt perfectly normal. At first. Then the plane started to skid. You can tell people didnt have seat belts on tight. They were getting bounced around. What many didnt grasp until an emergency exit off the win wasow close they had come to tumbling into the water. Just survived a plane crash. It would have went into, because the only thing that stopped us was that gate. Reporter the aircraft with 127 passengers and five crew members, landed on laguardias run way 13 in snow and fog. Two thirds of the way it skidded off to the left hitting an embankment and fence. The left wing badly damaged, ground crews reported back to the tower. Leaking fuel on the left side of his aircraft heavily. Leaking fuel . Affirmative. Reporter they are looking closely at a number of factors including weather. Airport managers say the runway had just been plownd and earlier flights landed safely. Two planes landed and reported, quote, good braking action on the runways. As we were right before the landing gear came out i heard the pilot discuss whether we were going to be in a Holding Pattern or not. The flight attendants were discussing it. The pilot came on and said were not going to be in a Holding Pattern. They are going to bring us in. I thought thats a good sign. Then i saw the runway and it was just white. And i, you know, its nerveracking but you think its going to be fine. Then the wheels hit the runway and you know, normally when a plane lands the pilot you know releases the brakes and theres that pull that has the plane slowing down. There was none of that. You dont realize how fast a plane is coming in to land when theres no brakes. So youre you are sliding for thousands of feet and you know whats happening but your mind cant really get there and youre holding on and then i would say probably halfway through the runway i felt the nose of the plane jerk left, and you know, it started to really shake and bump and oxygen masks were falling and things falling and its at that moment that you know this you know, your mind starts to go to this is really not the way its supposed to happen. Youre in the first row so not only can you see whats happening and you are very, very close to the water you could hear as well. I could hear and hear the pilot saying we have no power, we have no power. So you know, i was the first i could see the water, and you know, theres a moment where you dont know what youre going to hit. Whats going to slow us down. Will it be a plane, the airport, you have no idea. And then i saw the rock and then the water. Its at that moment your mind goes what happens if you go into the water . Do planes sink, do they float . Will i ever see my kids again. You really were terrified in that moment. Terrified because youre not prepared. You think you are, i fly every month for work, im a frequent flyer. I feel very safe on planes. Especially delta, i fly them every month. But its in that moment that youre so unprepared for what happens, i saw the water coming i saw what the pilots were seeing. The pilots did everything they could but its no different than a car thats lost control on ice. But except that were going hundreds of miles an hour. And the short few moments i have i know the pilot came up to you. He did. Right after this and what did he say . He opened the door and walked out and it was at that moment i think i released once i saw him you know, here he is, a man, i do a Digital Series that rooted in the Human Connection, and i looked right at him and he looked at me and i sort of came unglued. Here is this man who saw what i saw, and his only concern was for his passengers. He walked up to me and put his arm around me and said im going to get you off this plane. And he did. And the new York Police Department and the Port Authority Police Department, i mean, the Human Connection in its finest as we all got out of this plane, and they lifted us off because the ramps never deflated and they got us to safety and everybody did an slept job. How do you get through in this day and age where it seems like everything is focused on the external and not the internal. Remembering where your foundation and identity lies. I have been taught that through my family growing up in a faithbased home and knowing my identity lies in god and faith. Thats what a lot of it is about. I think the story mixes in with scripture and makes the message really clear. Im excited about it. This is something you have learned and focused on and known very personally and have bn ca about your accident and going through dark times and having to come to grips with the new you and how that happened. Even now getting used to the new normal and missing what i had before and realizing that people see you for your heart and character and its such a strong message and powerful message and it has been a cool thing to observe for me. The book is called your beautiful heart. Appreciate it. We will take a turn for a medical mystery. A woman with a oneofakind heart. First, this back at 8 40. Medical mysteries and cases that are unusual. Sometimes even the doctors couldnt figure them out. A young woman who came close to death a couple of times. She is now going strong. Kate snow has that story. Good morning. Christina beltran is an upbeat person. Optimistic and happy. She is literally oneofakind. The medical community has never documented another case like hers. At 24 years old, christina was living her dream in the big city. The california transplant moved in with her best friend from college. We are excited to live in new york and get on with our lives. Then the unthinkable happened. We were starting to unpack and she said what do you want for dinner and i woke up in the hospital. Christina had gone into cardiac arrest and saved by her fast acting roommate. She was on the ground and facedown and looked blue. It was scary. She had been testified in cpr. How lucky is that . Yeah. I could check this. Her parents rushed to her side. What are did the doctor tell you . He said the survival rate for cardiac arrest is 7. 9 and she is in a vegetative state. Christina beat the odds. How quickly did you recover and leave the hospital . It was eight or nine days which they said was one of the quickest recovery times that anyone stayed after cardiac arrest. Months later she felt chest pains again. They did an angiogram and it appeared to be cracked. It didnt add up. I work out every day. I run, i do yoga. There is no Family History and has no exposure and bad habits or cholesterol levels. The cardiologist tread christina from the start and he was baffled. Doctors used stents to open the arteries multiple times and they were only a temporary fix. The doctors said its clearly not working. You are bound to have a heart attack . At 25 years old, christina needed triple bypass. I remember them saying we had to do surge ra and i started to cry. Unbreak my heart she always sees the positive. There was no guarantee even this fix would last. A biopsy of her arteries unlocked a clue to her illness. It was not plaque causing the arteries they were closing. They were growing from the inside. Genetic testing found each of her parents carried a rare gene mutation and she received both from each parent. The gene she got from her mom and dad is a blueprint for the muscle cells in the arteries of her heart is defective. The smooth muscle cells dupe kad until the arteries close. Im the only documented case of it. The only documented case . Ever. Thats right. Her case is not just rare it was singular. That doesnt really happen in medicine. When it does happen its scary. Refusing to give up the doctor put christina on a combination of drugs. The medicine that we chose at the best guess hunch, we got very, very lucky and it turns out to be very effective for her. With frequent monitoring christina lives a normal and works in fashion and chronicles a popular blog unafraid of what the future holes. A lot of optimistic thinking and that gets everyone through things. You get that she is remarkably positive. The truth is after all of this they still dont really know how her genetic condition affects her heart. Part of why she wanted to talk to us is because she is a case study. The National Institutes of health are studying her and her family and hope that maybe by putting this on tv they will find a second case of someone who is young and had their arteries blocking over and over again. There has to be another person who has the same condition. Someone who might need the answer. How about her roommate . We wouldnt even have this story if they hadnt known how to do cpr. Fascinating. The other huge story we are talking about this morning is that Delta Airlines flight coming from atlanta that skidded off the runway at la guardia after it was landing. 27 passengers and five crew members landing in the snow and fog. Upon landing it skidded into the embankment. Flushing meadows bay is right there. It damaged the plane and it was leaking fuel. The passengers had to climb off on to the wing of the plane. There were minor injuries. 24 passengers with minor injuries and five were taken to local hospitals. Savannah talked to one of the passengers who appears on bravo. She asked what she heard and saw as they were getting ready to land. I heard them say we have no power. I could see the water. There is a moment where you dont know what you are going to hit. What is going to slow us down. The plane, the airport . You have no idea. I saw the rocks and the water. Its at that moment that your mind goes what happens if you go into the water . All you are going to do is put an oil and no taste Vegetable Oil and put that in an oven at about 350 for an hour. Every time you use it you season it. You dont use soap and water. You wipe out any bits and i use kosher salt to clean it out. Thats a great tip. I love bone in rib eye. A Little Pricey but you slice it up and share it. We will do two. A little salt. A cast iron skillet really hot on the stove. A little pepper. Why do you like the bone in . More flavor. The bone conducts the heat and allows it to cook quicker. You do that and you get your pan nice and hot and put it in like that. What does the cast iron do . Cast iron gets really hot and maintains the heat. You are going to keep this on one side. About six or seven minutes. You flip it over and you have the nice seer. You take rosemary and thyme and you smash garlic and you naught in. Lay it on top . Lay it on top. You get the juices going. You can do this on both sides. It will be rare. If you want it a little more cooked, you will put it in the oven for about 350. How long does it take to cook to medium . About ten minutes tops. Slice along there and get that. And asparagus on a cast iron skillet. You get as thin as you can with a little olive oil. You put that on and drizzle it and let it cook and you have the grilled a sparuous and a nice meal inside gives you that over the smoke and the fire. Ambrosia. Lets eat up.
