Lets start with the top story, the search for more people tied to the terror suspects in paris. Today, the funerals for the first victims are being held. Security officials are trying to determine the exact relationship between last weeks attackers and the funerals for the victims have begun. They died in a hail of bullets in france last week, but today they were laid to rest in the holyland. The bodies of four jewish hostages murdered in a Kosher Grocery on friday arrived in israel overnight. Their funerals attended by thousands including the israeli prime minister. Simultaneously in paris there was a service for three Police Officers posthumously awarded frances highest honor. This is an emotional time in france. The white house admits they should have sent a more senior representative to show solidarity. We should have sent someone with a higher profile. Reporter meanwhile, the wife of the man who murdered the four hostages, hayat boumeddiene, is now confirmed to be far beyond the reach of justice. The Security Camera footage shows her and a male companion arriving in turkey more than ten days ago. Officials say she later slipped across the border to syria and there reports in paris that as many as six more suspects are still on the loose. The government has not confirmed it, but they ordered the largest deployment of armed forces since world war ii. 10,000 troops are fanning out across the country, guarding monuments, jewish schools and other sensitive targets. There is also defiance here. The satyrical magazine Charlie Hebdo was attacked for publishing an offensive cartoon of the muslim prophet muhammad, plans to release a special edition tomorrow. Three million copies in 16 languages and yet again, another cartoon of the prophet muhammad, and this time holding a sign that said je suis charlie, i am charlie. We had the events here in new york city where officers were attacked by an individual with a hatchet. They renewed that threat and drew attention to it again. What are you telling the officers and how are you telling them to be on the lookout . We have so many additional officers out protecting the sites were concerned with here in the city to be more vigilant than they might be. The idea that the two officers in the car and we want to release one of them, preferably two and engaging with people. To be very much aware f their own safety and the safety of the site. French authorities have come in for criticism and at least in the case of one suspects, he was well known to french authorities and served time in prison. They are being accused of dropping the ball and not watching them anymore. Has that led you and people working in your counterterror unit to scrub the database and look back at the people who might have been on your list or of interest to you in the past . One of the benefits of the nypd is were so big, we have almost 1,000 officers assigned to our counterterrorism operation and intelligence operations. Investigators trying to pinpoint what caused smoke to fill a subway train and station in washington, d. C. During mondays busy evening rush. It led to one womans death and sent dozens more to area hospitals. Nbcs tom costello has the latest on this. Hi, tom. Good morning. Reporter matt, good morning. Were at the plaza metro station here. This is really just a terrifying event. 84 people taken to area hospitals, three in critical condition, one person died tragically after the train tunnel and the train filled with smoke, trapping passengers for nearly an hour. Please stay calm. Reporter panic on the subway. A train conductor urging passengers to stay calm, but for hundreds of passengers, that was impossible, choking on smoke so thick they could barely see. It happened at washingtons metro station as the evening rush hour was getting under way. A virginiabound car stuck on the tracks. No electricity, no visibility. Nothing. So much smoke they stayed inside their cars, struggling to breathe. By the time firefighters arrived, some passengers were unconscious, others having seizures. Once i got out and started coughing, i could taste blood in my lungs and that kind of thing. Its nasty. It was pitchblack smoke everywhere. They kicked everybody out. Reporter in all, dozens treated by medics and taken to area hospitals. So many, they had to use city buses. There was a woman in distress on the train and im sorry to say she passed away. Reporter the root cause remains unclear, but the ntsb has narrowed the source of the smoke. There was an electrical event involving the third rail. The train did not derail. There was no fire on the train. Reporter the washington, d. C. Subway system really has a checkered safety history. Back in 2009, nine people were killed and 70 injured after one train slammed into another. Tom, thanks very much. The Defense Department is having to answer a lot of questions after the u. S. Central commands twitter and youtube sites was attacked. This happened on the same day president obama was addressing cyber security. They are claiming links to isis and posting threatening messages. Lets go this morning to Jim Miklaszewski at the pentagon. There is no question that this is a huge embarrassment for the pentagon and military. S en com tried to play down the incident calling it vandalism. Its serious enough that the fbi is investigating. It was a cyber punch to the militarys central command. A group hacked into and seized control of sencoms accounts that they use to post information and videos of air strikes against isis in iraq and syria. Coincidence or not, it occurred as president obama delivered a speech on the need to tighten up cyber security. If we are going to be connected, we need to be protected. For 30 minutes they tweeted threatening messages. American soldier, we are coming. Watch your back and posted isis propaganda video. Cyber terror experts say social media sites can be relatively easy targets for the likes of the cyber caliphate. They have the ability of stealing passwords through spear fishing. Its not the most sophisticated, but it gets the job done. They posted the names and phone numbers of the top generals. The information was not classified. This is not a threat to Critical Infrastructure or intellectual property. This is much more of an annoyance. But sieb cyber experts say this should be a warning to vily on social media. Its not warfare or a crisis, but something that needs to be looked at and given much more attention than a simple prank. The pentagon has been in touch with twitter and will reach out to youtube in an effort to determine whether military safeguards are safe enough. That can be a tough job since the pentagon and military have thousands of social media accounts. The celebrations actually got out of control, were told, in columbus last night. In fact, at one point police there had to put on riot gear. They used tear gas and pepper spray as well. Roughly 8,000 students there rushed to the stadium and tore down goalposts. There were a handful of arrests. Everyone celebrating the eighth National Championship for ohio state. A shootout deep in the heart of texas and the new champion crowned. The game was a slugfest from the opening kickoff. Ohio state took control led by the third string quarterback. Officials are calling an Early Morning fire there this morning that disrupted service in and out of penn station suspicious. Subway trains were forced to bypass the station. The voice recorder was freed from beneath the wreckage and will be downloaded by analysts in jakarta in hopes it will reveal what pilots were saying before the plane crashed last month with 162 people aboard. Only 48 bodies have been recovered so far. A settlement could be in the works between Penn State University and the ncaa over the schools handling of the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal. Students are just starting the Spring Semester this week and returning to the news that according to the university, police found no evidence to support the allegation that a student was gang raped here at this fraternity. Many are demanding answers and some fraternities area accusing them of a rush to judgment. It was a bombshell report that shook the university of virginia to its core. In november, Rolling Stone magazine published an article about a student named jackie who alleged she was gang raped at a Fraternity Party in 2012. All greek was suspended as police launched an investigation amid protest. But now a major turn of events. The university announcing this week it is reinstating the fraternity after Charlottesville Police told the school their investigation revealed no substantive basis to confirm the allegations. Students are still reeling from it all. It has been heavy. The atmosphere has been negative. For the guys who are really happy to hear this news, im happy for them. Reporter this announcement comes less than a week after fraternities were allowed to resume social activities at uva with new security guidelines in place. They want to understand why they took action against 25 of the student body without thought to due process. Reporter jackies story started to fall apart soon after the Rolling Stone article was published and a number of inconsistencies came to light. My heart still goes out to her. Reporter these boys are friends of jackie who are described with different names in the article and who she went with the night of the alleged incident. Jackie has consistently stood by her story. Her friends hope now this community can turn a page. If something did happen to her that night, well, thats something that she needs to work support for. If she fabricated an entire story about this, thats Something Else that she would need help with too. My hope is this whole thing will make people a little bit more sort of aware to take care of each other. Reporter now, jackies attorney declined to comment. Police say theyre continuing their investigation. Meanwhile, at least three fraternities say theyre not going to sign on to those new rules and regulations. Turning to a remarkable story of survival that defies the odds. An nfl player was knocked off his boat miles from shore. With no one there to rescue him, he swam for 16 hours to make it back to land. He was alone nine miles out when he hooked a fish and just as he went to grab the line, a big wave crashed into the boat, knocking him overboard. The boat on autopilot sailed away. He had no life jacket, no radio. I quickly realized i was in a bad situation. Reporter if rob conrads name sounds familiar, it may be because for six seasons, he was a powerful fullback on the Miami Dolphins. But no test on the gridiron would match this. I was hit by jelly fish and circled by a shark. Luckily, they circled around and left. Reporter twice, conrad saw help, a fishing boat 50 yards away. Later, a coast guard chopper overhead. He saw them, they did not see him. I just said look, im not dying tonight. I have got two beautiful daughters. I was hitting that shore. I think that i suddenly got to a point where i couldnt bear looking at myself any minute longer. I was 190 pounds a year ago. And i was miserable. You think theyre never going to get that. And so i decided i would go and discover this is one of the duchess discoveries. Is how did i learn after all these years that the weight you could lose the weight and keep it off .
