So what that is allowing now is the jet stream to take a really big dip south, further than it normally does. And this semipermanent polar vortex is going to be allowed to make its way further south. And not just in the plains states but by the end of next week it will be as far south as northern florida and these temperatures going to affect, really, over 240 million. Reporter republicans have drawn their own battle line doubling down on the pledge to repeal the president s signature piece of legislation, obamacare and vowing to approve the Keystone Pipeline which the president has resisted. A group of nurses violently assaulted by a patient swinging a metal pipe. We should warn you the video you are about to see is disturbing. Here is miguel almaguer. Reporter it happened without warning. A 68yearold hospital patient out of his bed and on the attack. Wielding a metal pipe ripped from his room these wild swings could have been deadly. Nurses dodged some of the blows and scrambled for their lives. Now, a second angle, this hallway cam captures the chaos beyond the door, then the sprint to safety. One nurse stumbles and is struck twice with the metal pole. The man with the club isnt finished, the battered nurse seriously injured. One of them sustained a collapsed lung, another sustained a fractured wrist. The other two nurses sustained multiple abrasions, cuts and contusions. Reporter attacks like this one in st. Paul, minnesota used to be rare but some argue not anymore. Oshia says Health Care Workers suffer more injuries and illness cases than any other private sector. In 2010, more than 11,000 employees were assaulted. The suspect Charles Logan sr. , was confronted outside the hospital by police with a taser, and died shortly after being handcuffed. Investigators now say they may never know what fueled this terrifying attack. Scary video there. Sure is. Theres new controversy this morning, tied to the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. According to the federal complaint, the abduction happened at 9 40 p. M. Sunday, notified by the 911 call, police woke up a Security Guard and got the Surveillance Video. Police say the victim left behind her cell phone so cops would know who had been abducted. Monday, 6 01 p. M. , tracking gaithers atm card says barnes used it 100 miles away at a bank in aberdeen, maryland. At a gas station, Surveillance Video shows him buying several items including a bag of herrs potato chips. Tuesday a maryland woman found broken glass and other items in her driveway. She called police who found a hees chip bag and receipt from a philadelphia Grocery Store from sunday. Wednesday, Philadelphia Police release video of the suspect in that Grocery Store. Separately, virginia authorities already had a warrant out for barnes for a violent october assault on a 16yearold girl. They saw the Surveillance Video and make a critical discovery. Looks very similar to the vehicle we had known barnes to drive. Reporter virginia authorities track the car down to a car dealer. The dealer told them he put a gps on the car because the buyer had bad credit. Wednesday night the gps was activated and in minutes authorit in the jessup, maryland parking lot where barnes was arrested and gaither freed. Two National Guard soldiers were killed thursday night when their Apache Helicopter crashed near boise, idaho. Officials say they were on a night Training Mission at the time of the crash. The cause of the accident is under investigation. And new information on that massive air bag recall, according to the New York Times, japanese auto parts maker takata ordered technicians to destroy test results on some air bags after finding cracks in air bag inflators. The tests were carried out after 2004 accident when an inflator in a honda accord exploded, ejecting metal fragments injuring the driver. 17 million cars by ten automakers have been recalled worldwide over the air bags. A story we told you about on thursday, a new zealand prosecutor dropped the most serious charge against drummer phil rudd who is accused of attempting the murder of two people. The prosecutor is dropping that charge due to a lack of evidence. Rudd still faces charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. It was a night to remember for a young Boston Bruins fan. This all started around 1 00 this morning when a 50yearold man called 911 to report finding an injured person outside his home. When officers arrived, they located a 34yearold man with injuries inside the home. That man was transported to the hospital. The injuries and his condition are not yet known. Police are now saying whether or not the two men knew each other, all theyre saying is that the investigation now continues. They dont believe that is the case. Kris sanchez. And after the gas station standoff brooks is finally arrested, a moment of course captured on film by a camera man determined to get his story. For a camera man, i guess it was sort of the stuff that you know, so, yeah, im fine. Im fine. I just need a big drink. I think i would need a few big drinks after that. But my faft part is where he keeps filming even while his vehicle is being stolen. Dedication. Hes good. Now we know there is commonality between news men down under and here. Now to the fight against ebola. In texas the 21 day monitoring period for people at risk for contracting the virus is officially over. Behind that tiny window scientists are looking for a weak nps the ebola virus. This is a rare peak into a lab where the nations top military microbiologists are racing the clock to find the one vaccine that will stop ebola dead in its tracks. Its frustratingly slow work. Teams began looking for the vaccine when ebola was first discovered in aftrica. That was 1976. I would say im not unfrtable being this close. Our only way to communicate to those in the sealed lab, handwritten questions. We go through a rigorous safety and training program. And its the life and death transition to safety that leaves the scientists working in slow motion. Youre going to take this arm and slide it straight through the glove side. Im not sure its ever a virus that were going to beat. But i dont see any reason why we cant develop effective treatments for it. Health care workers who were exposed to ebola were treated with things that were actually developed right here. So they survived because of the therapies developed here. And because of the work theyve done here the teams have actually developed a system where they can take blood and determine if there is ebola in a patient within three hours. We would have Breast Cancer and leukemia and then suddenly we would be doing a takeoff of whatever happened to baby jane. Right. Oh, god, thats right. Those risks paid off. Sela ward took home an emmy and golden globe for her role as teddy, a character her fans remember well. I think thats the one thing i get stopped for the most out of 30 years of my career is sisters, you guys . Im so profoundly appreciative and grateful that the show really resonated with so many people on so many different levels. It wasnt just as sisters who made an impression. The show was rife with budding talent, showcasing future stars like paul rudd, ashley judd and one wellknown newlywed. Whatever happened to him . I dont know. I think he kind of disappeared after sisters. Funny how george never mentions sisters. For the first two seasons each show began with a sisters provocative conversation in the steam room. Thats a little personal, even for sisters. But dont expect this foursome to recreate those scenes any time soon. How long did those actually last . Half a day. Wouldnt they take half a day . Yeah. Thats a compliment to both of us i think. You were involved in the casting. According to the New York Times japanese auto partsmaker takata ordered its technicians to destroy test results on some of its air bags after finding cracks in air bag inflaters. The tests were carried out after a 2004 accident when an an inflater in a honda accord exploded injuring the driver. More than 70 million cars have been recalled over takata air bags. New Research Finds many people who think they are allergic to penicillin may in fact not be. An allergist at the mayo clinic tested almost 100 patients who believed they were allergic to penicillin and determined that 94 of them were not allergic to it. People who say they are allergic are often put on other antibiotics that can be more expensive and less effective. A simple skin test can tell you for sure. The nasal spray version of the flu vaccine did not protect Young Children against the swine flu last winter, and it might not work again this year. Studies have found that flu mist had little or no effect in children against swine flu, but early tracking suggests the h1n1 strain will not be a big splar this year. Weve taken that shrimp to this part here, and what were going to add to finish it, lemon lime soda, a little bit of shrimp, finish it with a little lime juice and some soy sauce to give it a little bit of salt and richness and thats what we have here for you, just a little bit of cilantro, and thats that dish. Day she want the texture of the onion. Sure. And she would take chicken thighs. Chicken thighs, really nice to braise. Dont dry out very quickly. A lot of flavor to them. A lot of fat flavor and on the bone, which is important, and no browning here, just add the chicken to the onions and the garlic. Let it just sit there for a bit, right . Soy sauce. Right. And some rice wine vinegar, and this is what adobea is, going anything in the combination of soy sauce and vinegar. You have some potatoes. My addition to this. I wanted to add something that would kind of bulk up. Raw or already blanched. These are raw. Makes the dish a little bit hearty. And this is just water. Cover it with a little bit more salt and fresh cracked black pepper. How long do you let it sit in the pot and just kind of stew. Cover this for about 45 minutes. It is the other things beyond the academics that help. I think people would be surprised how personal the process is. We look for we look for qualities like impact and engagement and authenticity. All those personal factors that go far beyond the academics that really mack a difference. How do you find out that from a in the thousands and thousands of applications. How do you find out how do you find it is authentic . You would be surprised at the distinctions you can make when you read essays, read recommendations, you can tell. And demonstrating interest is so important. Many colleges will track and see if youre visiting a school or going to a college fair, applying early is probably the best way to show demonstrated interest. And even schools i know duke doesnt track this, but they might track informed interests. So it is so important that you treat each school and each application as if it is your top choice. And you want to make sure if youre answering the why this college essay, youve done your research, refer to specific courses, professors, things like that. What about the essay . How much weight is there on the essay to get you into a college . Like at yours, for instance . It is absolutely significant. It is an opportunity for a student to have a conversation and say Something Different than the rest of the applications. And to sound like theyre 17 and not to be not to have it where they lose their voice and so many people have edited that it is no longer that teenage voice. I think that they forget we read them as if it is being read out loud. Sometimes they tend to be written as if they were essays. And when we read them, we hear them say that, so they sometimes get lost in the essay. So short declarative statements are great, about the student. I would add that you want to make sure youre telling an admissions officer something they cant learn from the rest of the application. Tell them something new. What if a kid doesnt have great s. A. T. S or acts, but theyre hard workers or there are some kids who just dont test well but need the right environment. I feel like sometimes they get rejected out of hand because their scores just arent high enough. I think thats part of the challenge of making a good list of colleges. Colleges where there are thousands of Great Colleges in the country, right . So there are great matches for every student, where theyre going to be challenged, theyre going to be comfortable, and where theyre going to be in a group that is going to both like them and stretch them a little bit. Thats the wholistic review comes into play. Were going to be reading the letters of recommendation where a teacher will say this student is trying hard, theyre just really an intellectual, someone who just is excited about ideas and thats going to build a picture beyond just the transcript, test scores. I feel for the families going through it now. It is so and it really affects the children, the pressure of it, doesnt it . Tough to get your kids through those months. And do you Clickity Clack online and look at their facebook pages and twitter accounts to see if theyre doing anything weird . We have a policy. Our policy is we dont friend and dont follow.
