Could the republicans have a wave tonight . The real question is can republicans win six seats . Thats the number to watch tonight, total number of seats they need to win to take over the senate. Will todays election put republicans in complete control of congress . Up for grabs, 36 senate seats and all 435 spots in the house. As much as 4 billion spent on the congressional races alone. Pretty soon youre going to want to do this to your tv. Reporter there are ten major senate races to watch from alaska to new hampshire. Republican candidates are relentlessly tying their opponents to the president , like kansas senator path roberts, hoping to hold off opponent greg orman, who still hasnt said which party he will side with. A vote for greg orman is a vote for the obama administration. Reporter others have filled the democratic void. But you have to vote. Are you going to vote . Reporter gop weighing in with its own big name. We want brave politicians. We want courageous politicians. Because washington is full of big spenders, lets make them squeal. Reporter basically deadlocked with bruce braley, would become the states first female senator, shaking off these controversial statements. The democrats have their back on jobs. The republicans are focusing on jobs. The economy. The economy. On making sure we can invest and help them reach the middle class. Getting our country out of the ditch. Reporter as election day heads down to the wire. This could be a long night. Some of the most competitive races like in louisiana and georgia could go to overtime if no candidate, no Senate Candidate in those races wins more than 50 of the vote. Louisiana would have another vote in december. And georgia, believe it or not, would have another vote in january. That means decision 2014, savannah, may not be done until 2015. If the georgia voters see their shadow, its nine more weeks of election. Theyre incredibly exciting, totally consequential, could see a shift in power and extremely competitive. And in the ten states where the senate is up for grabs, voters are engaged. The problem is, in the other 40, theres really no race. Thats why voters look disengaged. We could have a late night that extends farther. We could. And it has to do with three states that can make our night very long. Number one is alaska. It takes the iditarod to get all the votes in and louisiana and georgia business where possible Senate Control wont get decided until the runoff. By the way, these will become president iallike campaigns. Well get to know these candidates in ways weve not gotten to know them before. If youre watching tonight, whats the sign of an early republican rout . Two states im looking at. New hampshire, let me show you, with my little toy, and iowa. If republicans are winning here, theyre already at 47. They need four more. Then they only have to win half of these. Theyre already winning in arkansas, ahead in iowa, colorado, alaska, kentucky. You go in, and this thing is done tonight. But if those two end up on the democratic side then suddenly our long night, week, month nightmare could be here. Make no mistake about it, tomorrow is the unofficial beginning of the 2016 race for the presidency. What could we learn tonight in terms of results that might affect the president ial race . I would say this. Its what happens in colorado, iowa, north carolina, and new hampshire. Those are the four senate races that are also president ial battlegrounds. Republican party wins three of those four, you have to say, you know what . Maybe they can get back in the game and here and win the presidency in 2016. Thats the only one i would be watching. Tale of two president s, clinton and obama. You have a map to show us. This tells you the Democratic Party is no longer the party of obama. Debris from that Virgin Galactic space disaster has been found as far as 34 miles away from the original crash site. This, as investigators release new information about that deadly accident during a latenight briefing. Nbcs jacob rascon has more on this. Jacob, good morning to you. New information, play by play, second by second of what happened just before the plane broke apart, as investigators say human error is one of a host of issues that could explain why the copilot unlocked the planes braking system prematurely. Overnight, the ntsb released a detailed timeline of the failed test flight that killed one pilot and injured another in californias Mojave Desert on friday. At 10 07 19 a. M. At 45,000 feet, Virgin Galactic spaceship two separated from its carrier and its rocket ignited. Nine seconds later, ntsb says Cockpit Video shows michael alesbury, who died in the crash, unlocking the planes feathers or brakes, something usually done only when the plane is ready to glide back to earth. Ntsb says when the copilot unlocked the feathers prematurely, they appear to have deployed by themselves. Seconds later, the aircraft broke apart. Reports of parts as far away from the original site as far as 35 miles northeast of that section. Reporter the surviving pilot, who parachuted out of the space plane, landed about a mile east from the largest piece of debris. Former nasa astronaut and International Space station commander leroy chow is among those fascinated by the survival. Reporter i assume both pilots had oxygen bottles and were wearing helmets with a feed of oxygen. He would have been able to maintain enough consciousness to get out of the vehicle. Reporter siebold is still recovering, unable to tell investigators what he remembers from the accident. An industry under close scrutiny, waiting to hear from the only person to ever survive a commercial space flight crash. Because this was a test flight, there are literally thousands of pieces of data to analyze after the ntsb leaves the site, it will likely take a full year to come out with their full report. Soon after, you see him dragging her to his car, a silvercolo d ed taurus. She was screaming help, help. The guy was pulling her toward the car. You can see clearly her struggle to get way. She kicked out one of the passenger side windows. The victim has been identified as a 22yearold. Her glasses were found at the scene and detectives reported finding a knife as well. Her grandmother came to the scene to look for her own clues. Shes a very humble child and right now our hearts are very heavy. Michael nutter approved a 10,000 reward for any information. So far, neither petersons attorney nor prosecutors are commenting but nbc sports is reporting that a plea deal could be presented to the judge here as early as today. This morning Adrian Peterson is preparing to head back to court and the stakes are high. Lawyers have been working on a possible plea agreement. Im told if a deal is struck, felony child abuse charge pending against peterson would be reduced to a misdemeanor. Reporter the star running back has pled not guilty to reckless negligence to a child after he disciplined his child with a tree branch or switch at his texas home earlier this year. This is a case about parenting decisions and about whether something unfortunate happened when a parents decision was made by a man who believes strongly and loves his children very much. Reporter the Minnesota Vikings are keeping peterson off the field with pay while hes out on bail. Appreciate the support. Reporter but last month, prosecutors tried to have him rearrested after he allegedly said he smoked a little weed before his drug test. That could come up in todays court hearing. Or it could be off the table as part of any plea deal. If Adrian Peterson isnt sentenced to any jail time and he petitioned the nfl for immediate reinstatement, it would put commissioner Roger Goodell in a difficult position. Reporter critics have said goodell has been slow to discipline nfl players. Tomorrow an arbitrator will question him in the rey rice Domestic Violence case. There isnt precedence to look at. Whatever Roger Goodell does will create precedence. Reporter right now, petersons trial is scheduled for early december. Reporter by the time he was 16, he pulled off his biggest hack of all, a celebrity hacking, unlocking paris hiltons cell phone, posting her personal contacts, emails and nude photos online. How did you do it . It all started because i wanted a free tmobile phone. Once i had got in there i realized, hey, i have access to everybodys stuff. I looked her up. Sure enough, it was under her name. I went into it and shocked at what i saw. Reporter why post it online . I wanted to be known. I wanted to be famous. Reporter ever apologize to her . No, but i would. Reporter you can do it right now. Paris, im sorry i, uh, put your information online. Should have never done it. I wouldnt want it done to me. Sorry. Reporter but that was just the beginning. Cameron spent nearly a decade hacking anything he could and getting away with it. How much money do you think youve made from your victims . I would say 500,000. Could be more. Reporter how complex of an operation is this . Are you sitting in a room with lots of laptops and mainframes or one laptop on your bed . I had a 300 toshiba laptop from best buy, nothing else. Reporter he said he could access the countrys top stores like the recent hacks at target and home depot. The big chains say were increasing our security. You dont have to be worried about using a credit card at our store. Do you buy it . Not at all. You think were all still vulnerable . Absolutely, yes. You can put together a blueprint to do anything. If something is connected to the internet, its vulnerable. Reporter little did cameron know the fbi was hot on his trail and last year finally caught him. Probably one of the most scariest things thats ever happened. Reporter but in a twist made for the movies welcome to the fbi. Reporter the fbi asked cameron to teach them all his tricks. You got any of the checks . She says embracing a balanced view of herself, loving the good and the bad, has been key to her happiness. You talk in the book about learning to forgive yourself. Have you forgiven yourself . Just us a its just us and the babynd d were almost like, what do we do now, you know . No preparing. Theres no ready. Theres just ready enough i guess you would say. Its like a bomb goes off in your relationship. Its absolutely worth it. Shes amazing. It does throw things into a little bit of chaos. We have turned and looked at each other and said, i miss you. You cant sit down and watch your shows on tv. Our relationship was definitely impacted. When you bring the baby home, its just baby 24 7. You have to have date night and make an attempt to do that sort of thing or else youll go crazy. A simple thing while eating a meal together went out the window. Hes been so amazing. He wants his daddy daughter time. I really cant ask anymore from him. He looks at himself now the way noah looks at him. Noah is going to look up to him as a hero. I always tell him i fell in love with him again after we had our babies. We were silly and now its like at the same time i wouldnt ask for it any other way. Well, here to shed more light is tracey. Time is a big one when you have a new baby. The thing that really happens is you dont get new problems. The baby puts pressure on the areas where the relationships already fragile. Its shining a light on were there were tension points . Exactly. Money, work, sex. Problems before or issues before, it gets worse after the baby comes, but temporarily. It comes down to how you view this particular issue. Is the kid first, is the relationship first, are they on equal footing. Its not about loving your baby more than your partner. Its really like two different relationships. I look at it more like being on an airplane. You have to put your own oxygen machg on first. Your relationship needs you so you can nurture your baby. We heard the husband talk about date night. But its not always that feasible for a variety of reasons. Date moments are where you nurture the connection in the relationship. Maybe you bring home a special dessert. Or gather leaves from the front yard and present it as a bouquet. Saying in that warm personal connection. And expectations is also really key. A lot of people say parenting is the hardest thing youll ever do, and its true. You need to look at each other and say, oh, this is what they were talking about. Theres a temptation to turn or blame each other. Keep your eye on the big picture. Your relationship has an opportunity to grow deeper so enjoy every minute. You kind of become all about baby and you have to consciously say, wait, lets remember how we used to be. There was a reason we clicked before. Exactly. And you want to keep the relationship very strong because children thrive when mom and dad have a really good relationship. Do you believe theres a division in what the parenting should be . And thats why i love when i sat down and read the script. There was this wonderfully complex, fascinating female character and it was just so much for me to get my teeth into. And she really is a very determined, strong woman to be playing. I was going to say, you actually got to meet the real jane, which is wonderful. I always wondered how those meetings go. Is she talking and youre staring at her mannerisms, saying ive got to remember this . Absolutely. I was nervous because youre playing a real person so theyre going to be seeing this film at some point so you want to get it right. It was exactly that. I was talking to her and asking her questions and then youre watching how they pick up a cup of tea or how she moves her foot, just trying to absorb everything so i could play her as truthfully as possible. There is a truthful and beautiful love story at the heart of this. They find each other. Theyre young, vibrant, beautiful. He is diagnosed with this terrible disease and jane casts her destiny with stephen. I found myself wondering, would Stephen Hawking have accomplished all that he did without her . I think it was very much the two of them together. Often with famous successful people theres a partner, someone in the background who is supporting and giving and it was totally the two of them together. As you say, its a true, True Love Story and a love that lasted for 25 years. 25 extraordinary years. An incredible job, you see this deterioration in his body certainly not his mind or spirit. What was it like to Work Together . It was fantastic. Weve known each other a few years now and seen each other at auditions and turned down for so many parts together. Its a bonding experience. Exactly. Commiserating together. It was wonderful. I have such respect for him. Ive seen his work in the theater and loved that it was very easy and collaborative. Wonderful working with him. Really extraordinary. The early part of this takes place at cambridge. You went to oxford, right . I did, yeah. Was your College Experience a little different from there . Yeah, yeah. Occasionally for the contestants. Its like iron chef meets deal or no deal. We get contestants who come in, get to cook against one of my chef gladiators, we call them and they win money and then they get a chance to take that check or rip it up and face the next contestant for more money. Weve got the gang downstairs in the studio, all tasting what youve already cooked. The smell of Brussel Sprouts has been in the air all morning. Right. I have a few peppercorns. Im going to grind them myself. Nothing better than freshly ground pepper. Even if you have one of those grinders . That works, too. Make sure it come out nice and coarse. Thats where its at. Straight on to the steak. If you grind it too fine youll get a lot more heat out of it. Youve chosen what . New york strip . Boneless. Can you cook it with bone in but this is quicker. Steaks coming up to Room Temperature for 45 minutes, which a lot of people think thats strange and what were told to do more often than not is take things straight out of the fridge and cook them. If you want a beautifully evenly cooked pink steak you really want it to come up to Room Temperature. Doing this on the stove in a very hot iron skillet. Nice hot iron skillet. Cast iron really retains its heat, which is beautiful. I put it on five minutes before i start cooking. Leave it go. You can turn it every minute, thats a good way to cook a steak or leave it four or five minutes on each side at once. Do you score the fat . Especially if you have a nice fat, that will help it to break down. Even as youre cooking, lets find out how theyre eating downstairs. How does it taste, guys . Peppercorn brings out the flavor. And weve all noticed how curtis has stolen tamrons haircut. They like your haircut. Guys, thanks. This meal is quick start to finish. It really is. Well create some brown butter. Pan goes on to the heat. Drop a little bit of butter in. Let it start to foam. See how were getting that foaminess around there . Right. Let that start to happen. Let the butter just gently turn brown. Season that with salt and pepper. Take your Brussel Sprouts, thanks, matt. Which actually i have already blanched my sprouts. Pop them into ice cold water before you put them into the butter. Do you want them to be a little crunchy at the end or cook straight through . I want them to cook pretty much straight through. You want them to develop that crunchiness on the outside, little bit of texture. Who in the tasting Team Downstairs is a fan of Brussel Sprouts . I love them. We love them. Dont forget the broccoli. Broccolis really good. Tasty. Brussel sprouts just stink up the house a little bit. They can. Thats okay. While the steaks are nearly done, what i do is pour a little red wine into the same pan. What kind of wine, what kind of red . Its just a dry red. As long as its just been opened its fine. You dont want to use wine from days ago because youll get that sort of corky smell to it. Turn them over. You actually deglaze in the pan, lifting all that flavor from the bottom of the pan back into it. They dont have to stay in there all that long once the wine is in there . Thats right. Take them out. Let them rest. The steak has been out of the pan for five minutes. Just allowing that temperature to drop down. Cut directly across the grain of the steak. You dont want to go for it, matt. Get in there. You dont want to cut it on an angle, which a lot of people do. Cut straight across the grain. You get this beautiful, tender piece of beef. Another possible side. Orchetti, really simple stuff. Any questions for curtis while i chew here . Can we have some more . Why do you not cut at a slant . I thought you were supposed to cut at a slant. I didnt hear that. The steak, why do you cut it why cut it across not at a slant . Good question. Look at the center of the steak here. The grain of the meat runs directly down one way. If you cut on a slant youll cut with that grain which will make it a chewy piece of meat. If you cut across, youll cut right across that grain. New details now about a deadly crash involving the Ride Share Service lyft. The victim is from san jose. 26yearold Shane Holland and his friend left a Halloween Party saturday morning when the lyft car they were in spun out of control and crashed into a tree, killing holland. Hollands friend and the lyft driver suffered minor injuries. This is the second deadly crash involving lyft. If you havent heard it by now, well say it one more time, its election day, and two soda tax proposals are getting major attention. In berkley a civil majority is required to pass theirs. When do we need to see a dermatologist . Most women and men should see a dermatologist when they turn 30. Really . For a variety of reasons, to have those moles checked. Even women of color get skin cancer. And also for good skin advice. All of our skin is a little bit different. But its especially important with cancer and not just for beauty. Thats right. Which a lot of people assume. Beauty is important but cancer is very, very important. Lets take a look at some of the things youve brought in for us today. What do you have here . A couple of masks here. We have a clay mask for those women who tend to be oily. We have a cucumber mask for women who tend to be dry and a salt mask for those in between. Does it have cucumber in it really . You need to read the ingredients to see how high up it is in the list of ingredient. We cant tell the product i use for standards reasons but you looked at the active ingredients in my product. What do you like in some of the active ingredients . There are a whole host of things that i like in the active ingredients. For example, different botanical agents, plant agents that can hydrate the skin. They also have antioxidant properties. Look for that . Absolutely. Antioxidants make a big difference. This time of year, tamron, we want to use sunscreen even though were going into the colder weather. I do sunscreen every morning. Perfect. Every morning and every night i wash my face and i use sunscreen. A lot of people of color, again, believe black women are the Fastest Growing population with skin cancer. Sunscreen in my foundation, is that enough . Not enough. You need another one. You want a moisturizer thats hydrating. I have a day cream and night cream. Do you need both . The day cream has to have spf 30 or higher, broad spectrum. And your night cream needs to be more moisturizing. Tell us about this. I also want to know about cleansing oils. Those are so popular right now. Yeah. Thats counter to my mind. I think oils clog. And they can. So if youre acne prone or have oily skin, you dont want to use the cleansing oils. She got up one day and she said, you know what, im sick of gardening and sick of deciding to be a chef, and shes a great cook anyway, before she went home, so she just said she called and said, what would you think if i decided to come back to the band . And i said, chris, it is your band. I dont think you really have to ask. Just pack your suitcase and come on back. Whas it like riding a bike hd she came back . It was. But shes a trained musician. Shes not just like a shes not just a pop singer. Shes a real trained a musicians musician. She came back early and really spent a lot of time with the guys really just playing. We talked about this is fantastic. All these songs that we didnt know anything about, hidden away, tucked away in shoe boxes and what not. Why hadnt you recorded them before . The reason i called it 24 karat gold is because these are the golden songs. Some were recorded by Fleetwood Mac and i wasnt crazy about the arrangement, so i pulled them. Some were recorded by me and i wasnt crazy about the producers direction and i pulled them. Some of them sometimes you have too many midtempo songs, something has to go. Too many slow songs, a ballad has to go. These were all supposed to be on records somewhere between 85 and 1990, really, and for whatever my reasons were, i pulled them back. Of all these, stevie, which is the one youre the proudest of . Well, im not really more proud of any of them, but i am very i really love the one that is called lady because it was the first piano song i ever wrote. And somebody had i moved to l. A. And around 1971 and somebody from my rehearsal studio gave us an upright piano. They were going to dump. I didnt know how to play. My parents never had. Your guitar. Yes. I said ill take it. This is the first song i ever wrote on a piano. I held this song back all these years from my work and from Fleetwood Mac. Something said maybe somebody will write a musical about this, like, showboat or something. And so i never offered it up to anybody. It just stayed on this little demo with little we love you. And we were happy for you. We also wondered who was watching us in the middle of the night. Stevie. Right after the olympics. Every night for two solid weeks. 2 00 a. M. , early . 4 00 a. M. There. So they made me reexamine the relationships in my life, and what i thought love was, you know what i mean . It changed me. It did save me to a certain extent because it made me realize i was missing something from inside. So much of the problem with our business is it is you have to be thinking about yourself a lot of the time because youre you are your own product out there selling it, you know . You got to think about your body, you got to think about looking good, it can take over, though. You can feed the beast all the time. Right. And they dont care what you look like. They just need their mommy. What i felt from them, like i said, it changed my whole perspective on my life and my love and what i thought love was. You talk a lot about relationships. I was so glad you were so aprop because so many of us have been through heartache. I found myself nodding and saying, thats me on that page and thats me on that page. You say, after a breakup, people turn to different things, alcohol, some other things. You said you turned to another man. Immediately. Thats the thing you dont let yourself heal. I never thought of that. I just thought, oh, okay, i found somebody else and this is over and that was hard, so ill just start new. I thought that was healthy. I was ending one thing that wasnt good and going to another thing. But i you say passion with love. Many times, many times. And, you know, i realize now that what i was seeking, i never became whole on my own. I never let myself heal and i never i never feel whole on my own with my own love, with a love inside of me. Value. Yes. When people go to the bookstore and page through it, thats what i do, like at the first chapter and read a little, when you read the very beginning of this book, it grabs you by the shirt collar and shakes you. It talks about the day that you kind of started freaking out a little bit because you were realizing your marriage wasnt right. Right. You dive in the deep end right in the beginning. One of the scariest moments of my life, you realize i had been suppressing this feeling, this idea that it wasnt working for so long, and it was finally, like, coming to the surface. And i had a terrible kind of like anxiety attack, you know, i felt like my heart was beating out of my chest, i felt like i was dying, i felt like i was going crazy. I didnt know what was happening to me. Thank god my mother was there, and i was, like, something is happening. It was the peak of youre the most beautiful woman in the world, magazine, number one song and video in the world. Number one song and video, number one television show, American Idol. Everything was everything on the surface, everything seemed like it was perfect, and wonderful. And in a sense, it was. But my personal life was kind of crumbling, and i didnt want to face it. And in that moment, i had no choice. He sayou always think you cae it better. Im an optimist. It will be better. Right, that moment when that happened, i realized, i was, like, if hes not happy, im not im not happy. You know. Not because hes not happy, but because i havent been happy for a long time and im not facing it and he was brave enough to say it first, you know what i mean . It was, like, well, hold on, there is something super wrong here. And the slow realization of that and trying to go, okay, we need to get back on track and realize it wasnt when consistent things in your life, your mom, your sisters, benny, your friends. Thank god for benny. Thank god for the bennies in your life. Those are the people that help get you through your time. How is your relationship now . Very good, thank god. You know, we have to raise those kids together. Hes super supportive of me. Im supportive of him. You know, i think we both deep down wish that it wasnt the way it was, but at the end of the day, i think we feel like it is a good choice for us, good for the kids, and theyre never going to be lacking for love in any way, shape or form. For anyone who has gone through anything difficult, gone through heartache, i can tell you, you learn something from this book. I know i did. Youre going to love the pictures. Pictures are excellent. Today we focus on how to talk to your kids about alcohol and drug use before it becomes a problem. According to the National Institutes of health, 23 million americans struggle with addiction and someone who knows the pitfalls of Substance Abuse all too well is former nba player chris herren. A natural talent, countless opportunities and the world at his fingertips, but his battle with drugs and alcohol cost him his basketball career. As a freshman in high school, he started Drinking Alcohol and smoking marijuana. As a college ballplayer, chris used cocaine. But after being drafted to play professional basketball with the denver nuggets, chris was traded to the boston celtics, and his addiction to oxycontin began. Within seven years, he was spending 12,000 a month on heroin, overdosing four times. At that point, with seven felonies on his record, chris had the cards stacked against him. Fortunately, his loving wife heather remained by his side. She and a support system helped chris get the treatment he needed. Wow. We should say that chris has been sober since 2008. Hes traveling the country sharing his story. And hes here today with julie holland, a psychiatrist, specializing in pharmacology. Great to see you boat. Sitting close to you as youre watching that history unfold of what happened, do you feel like that was that happened to another human being or is it as real now as it was . It is realer, yeah. It is. Because you always have that fear of falling back. And you got to be aware of that. It is always tough watching that. It is interesting because youre an athlete, and so it must have been baby steps to the edge of the cliff, wasnt it . You had to continue playing, you had to have stamina. Absolutely. I mean, i never imagined by taking one painkiller it would lead to eight years on heroin. That wasnt the plan. Do you think it was because you already dabbled so much in marijuana and cocaine before that happened that you were just more susceptible to it or as a way of life, almost . I think thats the process. It started early and thats why i do what i do today, to try to get out in front of the kids and i think we have we teach our kids too often about the perils, the last days of addiction, and not the first day. Not the beginning. What is the right time to start having the conversation about alcohol and drugs with kids . I always said if a kid can ask a question, they can get an answer. Anytime it is coming up if theyre learning it at school, if they come home with information or misinformation, thats when you sit down and talk. Should they bring it, or do you bring it up to them whether they ask or not . If youre going to bring it up, you need to make sure it is a teachable moment, and theyre in a good place to hear what you have to say. I think thats crucial. When are children experimenting with drugs is now what age would you say . The national average, i believe, for alcohol is 12 and cannabis is 14. But one of the big problems now, i think, is pharmaceuticals. And people i know ages 18 to 25, the biggest segment in our country using pharmaceuticals. One thing to keep in mind, overdose from pain meds are dwarfing any overdoses from illicit drugs. All illicit drugs combined. Chris, having the talk with your own kids, was that difficult . Do they know your history . How did you do it . It was on espn. So i had to sit down prior to it airing and it was emotional. Necessary. It was a healing moment. You know, but i think every kid, you know, being out in front of kids all across the country speaking, i think it is very important to ask them how come on fridays and saturdays you have to change yourself. Why arent you good enough being yourself at 14, 16 . Is it kids trying to fit in . Are they numbing themselves . I think peer pressure plays a big part. I think studies show that most kids are not in high school, but the kids who are are the loud voice. If you think your kids have an issue with drugs or alcohol, whats the first thing you should do . I think most important thing to keep in mind is these things dont happen in a vacuum. It may be that Family Therapy is what is required or individual therapy, but you want to keep the lines of communication open with your kids. And you want them to be able to trust you as a resource, and if you dont know or if we can look it up together, we can figure it out together, but sometimes you need professional help.
