Brittany maynard made her final Facebook Post saturday writing, good bye to my dear friends and family that i love. Today is the day i have chosen to pass away in the face of my terminal illness. This terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me but would have taken so much more. The story of the 29yearold diagnosed with terminal brain cancer made headlines when she moved to oregon to take advantage of that states death with dignity act. A video explaining her decision to end her life on november 1 went viral with nearly 10 million views on youtube. I dont have to die the way that its been described to me that my brain tumor would take me. Last week a new video, eluding to a possible delay. If november 2 comes along and im still alive i know well be moving forward as a family like out of love for each other and that the decision will come later. Overnight a statement from an end of Life Organization associated with maynard read in part, she chose to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid in dying medication she received months ago. She died as she intended, peacefully in the arms of her loved ones. There were heart felt tweets about her passing. Her story compassion and fight will never leave me. She modeled the bravery of facing death with dignity. She, not cancer had the last word. She thanks family and Close Friends she called her ring of support before ending with a final message. Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward. Her official owe bitary released reading she left this world with zero regrets on time spent, places been, or people she loved in her 29 years. Seize the day. Whats important to you, what do you care about, what matters. Pursue that. Forget the rest. Weve got another major system coming onshore into the Pacific Northwest. And that area is going to be looking over 48 hours from 3 to 6 inches of rain. In the meantime, were learning more this morning about what may have led to the tragic crash of a Virgin Galactic space plane during a test flight. In a moment well talk to the companys founder sir Richard Branson. First, nbcs jacob ras cone has the latest on the investigation. Good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. The ntsb wants to be clear these new facts dont yet tell us the official cause of the crash, that will take months and longer. But we now know video and flight data in and outside the cockpit appear to show mistakes by both man and machine. The unexpected announcement came overnight. A break in the investigation into Virgin Galactics failed test flight that killed one pilot and injured another. The ntsbs acting chairman saying the tails or feathers of the space plane which are only supposed to deploy as the aircraft kree enters the atmosphere, deployed before the plane got into space. The ntsb saying video from inside the cockpit shows the copilot Michael Alsbury who died in the crash unlocked the feathers seconds after the planes rocket ignited which is too soon. But the feathers dont deploy simply because they are unlocked. That requires a second lever. Video and flight data confirm nobody pulled that lever. The feathers deployed on their own. Seconds later the aircraft came apart. We are a long way from finding cause, we still have months and months of investigation to do, a lot that we dont know. It broke apart at 45,000 feet and this is the biggest piece of what is left. What would have carried six space tourists and two pilots into suborbit. More than 700 people have already bought tickets for a future space flight including justin bieber, katy perry and leonardo dicaprio. The travel community is mourning the loss of alsbury. He was a friend and colleague colleague. To all of us. Never gets replaced. Reporter and the recovering pilot is recovering after surgery, he is well enough to talk to doctors but not yet to investigators. We expect that he may prove to be an integral part of understanding, matt, what actually happened on board that flight. All right, jacob, thank you very much. I know its early and the ntsb is saying its going to take a long time to have concrete answers bse preliminary ideas that the copilot on this flight may have started the process of the tails or those feathers at the wrong time, have you seen that video, can you confirm that . I havent seen the video myself. The ntsb or leading the investigation, and we dont buy exactly what they tell us. But if the deployment did take place early, obviously they are indicating that may well that may well be the cause. But we need them to examine that further and let us know. I know youre taking a waitandsee approach, sir richard, but people are already wondering whether this accident and the death of this copilot is a crippling blow. There have been delays, setbacks in the past with this program. Can Virgin Galactic survive the image seen around the world of that space vehicle coming apart at 45,000 feet . I think that if we can find what the ntsb pointing to, if that ends up to be the case, that is something which is easy to fix. And we can make absolutely certain that it cannot be done again in the future. So i think you know, we have a wonderful spacecraft, spaceship, wonderful engineers trying to make history and they are not going to 0 they are going to move forward and create a Spaceship Company that will be hopefully one day the marvel of the world. Yes, its been a horrible setback, particularly obviously for michaels family. And for mike himself. But we owe to the him to continue and that we will do. Even as you say we owe to the him, im thinking back to the early days of the nasa programs going into space and it seemed at that time though they had tragic loss of life as well, that was about the advancement of science, it was about that giant leap for mankind and rightly or wrongly, people dont see your program in the same light. They think its more of an expensive thrill ride. So is it worth the risks . Absolutely its worth the risks. Our program is about many different things. First of all, its about giving the millions of people who would like to go to space the chance to go to space. Secondly, its about putting up massive arrays of satellites to enable the 3 billion people who dont have mobile phone or Internet Access or wifi access to get them. Third, its about with pointtopoint travel in the future in an environmentally friendly way in a fraction of the time it takes today. I can carry on. Nik was walking the distance of two city blocks and up eight stories with 65,000 people gathered below, holding their breath. The dare devil taking in the scenery. Whats the view like . Its unbelievable. Absolutely stunning. And while a sometimes shaky wire didnt quite let him do everything he wanted. Unfortunately i planned on doing a selfie right about here but i dont like this movement so i dont think im going to. Under seven minutes later, he was on solid ground, kissing family and, yes, taking selfies. Followed by a few quick elevator rides before his second walk of the night. Are we good . This one, blindfolded. Looking good. With no vision to help him, nik relied on a pinging beacon and his fathers coaching. Two steps. Another step. What strikes me in watching these things, nik, you walk across that wire like youre walking to the bus stop or to the starbucks. You are so calm, cool and collected. Was there never really a moment that you felt a little fear, that your heart rate went up a little bit . You know, theres no time for fear. I have to stay focused on what im doing. If let fear enter into my body thats when an accident can happen. I try to remain very positive and very focused and train properly. Its really about training and preparation, knowing i would be successful making this walk. I never would have taken that first step if i wasnt fully confident. That said, you were going to do a selfie at one point but decided not to. Is that because conditions werent sufficient to do that . There were a couple of big gusts of winds that hit me in the face and stood me upright. I was leaning into it. And i thought maybe i shouldnt do this. Threequarters of the way up, jim cantore warned me i was going to face more fierce winds coming off that building. To be honest, in the excitement or anxiousness, i wanted to get up there because i wanted to see how bad it was going to be. And at the end i thought i did that really quick. I should have stopped. But alls well that ends well. Glad to be on solid ground. The next walk you did, of course, blindfolded. Whats that like to have that sense taken from you . How important is your vision in doing what you do . How many adjustments did you have to make . Up until recently i thought it was impossible to walk a wire without vision. My parents always told me to focus on the other end, thats the solid rock, and focus on that. Youll make it across to the other side. To take that important element out was extremely challenging and wire walking was definitely Second Nature to me. Seven generations, its in my blood. But definitely challenging mentally. Its very, very draining. There was no time to think about it. I knew i had to get over that wire. Basically i told myself im going to torture you mentally for 2 1 2 minutes but i know youre going to make it safely to the other side because youre prepared. I jumped on that cable and here i am this morning. You make it look so easy. I know youre planning your next big stunt. Feel free to let us in on what it is. Do you feel in your heart you will know when enough is enough or do you feel that pressure to always be topping yourself . No, i really do feel like ill know when enough is enough. It may be soon. My great grandfather did lose his life and it had to do with his physical ability. It wasnt his age but he couldnt hold on. I have been trained to hold on to that wire. Knowing that that wire is there. If theres ever too much or anything ill go down and hold on and wait for my guys. I do think there will be a time. When you think its time, i told my family, let me know and ill give it up. Your encore performance, have you planned it . Im working on recreating my great grandfathers greatest walk in georgia, he did two head stands on the wire. Ive never done a head stand on the wire in public. Im training for that. The first month or so i really checked out. It just felt important to totally focus on her and on family. Everybody on the show came by and saw her. I pretty much didnt leave the house. If you wanted to see me or the baby you had to come to our apartment. She is a good eater but like her parents she likes to snack. She is drunk on milk. When she was 3 weeks old my mom and i were hanging on the play mat and she kind of rolled over. I asked my doctor what level of brilliance are we talking about. She said that is a fluke, dont get too excited. Learning to give her a bath was a huge challenge. She cried and then i fed her and then i cried because it was so stressful. That feel good. Now vale loves her bath. She can sit in it all day long. You know how much i love you . It will surprise no one that mike is an awesome dad. He makes funny faces and making the corny jokes. I feel like i can tell you anything too. Wow. I definitely dont want to paint a completely rosy picture. Its hard. You know we didnt get any sleep last night . You get very very exhausted. Im terrified to come back to a job where i have to speak for a living because i honestly have a very hard time right now putting basic sentences together. You can do it. Matt would be so gracious about that. He would never tease me. You smell good. I was thinking a lot about coming back to work and its bittersweet. Because this time has felt so precious and magical. After being let down so hard with the divorce, here i am trying to try so hard and hold it together and make this amazing life when i feel unhappy and hiding those feelings. You write in the book about a scene when youre on the phone with your boyfriend and your agent is watching you plead with the boyfriend on the phone for yourself and then you come back into the room and she says wow, you have self esteem issues. Right. Reporter you never had contemplated that you had low self esteem . No. I thought i was the tough girl from the bronx, had it all together. I was out in hollywood. Nobody i had so much common sense and street smarts and all that kind of stuff. Reporter how does that work . Someone has low self esteem but theyre on television theyre confident enough in one area. Reporter right. Theyre on stage, looking sexy, looking hot and that doesnt go with low self esteem. I had this confidence in what i could do. I did not have so much confidence in who i was and what i had to offer just as a girl. Reporter can you work to figure out why you thought you were so unworthy in love . Its still a work in progress for me. Its how you feel as a child. Being a middle child and being invisible sometimes and trying to get the attention. What did i do . I overachieved. I ran track and won medals every weekend or i would go on the show and steal the show. That would give me a confidence. But there was a part of me that just wanted love that just wanted to be you know that felt like she wasnt worthy of love which is why she was trying to do all this stuff. Reporter she says thats why when one romance ended she would jump right into another without a break, always mistaking passion for real love. Reporter gives me a little comfort and gives me a little we have a little chemistry, boom were in. Reporter when you broke up with ben afflec marc anthony was there and, boom you were in. Youre right. Probably my first big heartbreak and one of my friends that came into my life and said im here. What you need to know is nobody can save you or heal you. Only you can do that for you. You tell a story about how when you would two would argue, she would demand to speak to ed grimly. She liked ed grimly better than me. At times ed always sided with her. When he was out on the wires, i wanted to take a selfie but given the wind gusts, the occasional wind gusts right now im probably not going to do that. It teaches them how to be more comfortable in their bodies and we know researchers might not have sex as early as other kids who dont know the right language. It builds a sense of self up. Now it sounds like sooner. In preschool youll talk in very simple terms. If they ask you questions, you answer honestly. By elementary you want to be talking about anatomy, what intercourse is how man and female bodies fit together like puzzle pieces. Should you wait till they ask you. Some kids just mature later than other kids. You dont want to rush them in you dont want them finding out on google. Playground talk right . You want to be able to give them appropriate and true and factual information. But dont overtalk. If they say, hey, will you tell me about blah blah blah and you say sure what do you want to know . They might say nothing, thats okay ill talk to you about it another time. Sometimes we as adults feel like we need to give more information. Kids dont even get to have a childhood anymore. Youre racing through everything. Its unbelievable to me. I think, too, parents worry about having this conversation because they think if i talk to my kids about contraception and about sex, it means i condone it. Thats not the case at all. Youre still going to talk about your family values and beliefs, that comes init. The studies show that kids who have open communication with their parents about sex are actually less likely to have sex in adolescence. By junior high they should know everything . By junior high they really need to know. What i see in my practice is kids in junior high, seventh and eighth grade are starting to experiment. I know its awful to think about. But we want them to be educated. If we start these conversations early so theyre open and comfortable with us as parents theyll come back and talk to you and say this is happening, this person is doing that i dont want to do that and start to do what if questions. What if all your friends are hooking up and you dont want to, what does that mean . If you dont know how to have the conversation, you say a book is a good idea a guide. Yes. There are so many good ones out there and reputable resources online you can use, too. Theyve already figured out words to use and whats age appropriate.
