Power out but nothing yet that would indicate, a, someone has been seriously hurt, or b that major structures such as say the bay bridge or other bridges and overpasses in the region have been in any way compromised. One thing you really want to keep in mind here as our meteorologist jeff ranieri hit earlier, gas lines could be compromised. We have spoken with fire officials from vallejo. If youre waking up right now and trying to figure out if youre at risk, go around your house and check it out and make sure there are gas lines that are not affected in any way that havent been broken. And to also make sure there are no foundational cracks around your home and, if so, you should report that. This as we really try to gauge the full effects of the earthquakes this morning. Im joined by mike, our traffic reporter. Mike, where are you right now and did you feel the effects of this earthquake . First of all, sammy, im over here in the newsroom. I was in fremont when it struck in bed. The rest of my family is doing all right. We felt this long, slow roll. One of the kid was coming into the bedroom to wake me up this morning, but it wasnt. Continued for 15, 20 seconds. Very long but gentle feeling over where we were in the east bay in fremont. Initial worries, of course, were the hayward fault and everything is okay in the hayward area and nothing fell off the shelves or anything like that. Made our way into the newsroom and we actually have gotten word from chp, i know you have talked to them. I have the maps now, folks, some disruptions to the flow of traffic. No disruptions to any of the mass transit that we know about. B. A. R. T. One of the early things we worry about. They werent running at the time. They would do a typical systems check but everything was okay and no problem for any of the other agencies and were standing there and checking in with them. We have daniel hill from chp, also. If youre with us still on the phone, thank you for joining us. Were hearing about closures up in the north bay and we want to make sure folks know about that as we look at damage from the downtown area. Havent seen any major collisions in intersections because of that reason but that is a significant concern from the highway patrol. There are also some situations there, power out in the entire area. You guys handle the highways but local roadways as well. We are to treat that as a fourway stop but theres still no signals. Thats correct. Its an always stop sign when the signals are not working. Highway 37, the off ramp of sunol boulevard is the only one that is closed. Do we have any other officers out there doing Traffic Control, that you know of . Valley congress road in napa, thats affected with a major road buckling. Our officers are trying to fulfill their normal road duties as well. So they are putting alerting county roads to the problems and so we can be available to the public should they need us. Thank you, daniel. Well let you get back to the safety of your folks. Weve been told by daniel hill from the chp that there are local signals out there. Were learning about possible problems with the roads for highway 12 right there and 121 over there, highway 29, signal issues out there as well. Highway disruptions to the entire area so the local signals will be out as well as the lights. If you dont have to head in to downtown napa, i heard one of the Board Members say, stay out of the area. They look the local tourism but right now this is not a place to be doing sightseeing. Stay away from the surface street traffic if you can. Once this stretch around highway 29 and 121, this is where were hearing about most of the disruption. Westbound 37 is the only official closure that we hear about. The west of highway 37 is moving all right. Ill check on the activity because i think theres a race going on today. Well see if that is going to affect the sonoma raceway. For now, back to you, sam. If youre just waking up, youre looking at the epicenter of an earthquake that struck at 3 27 this morning. This is the largest 6. 0 earthquake weve seen since dating back to loma prieta dating back to 1989. Were trying to find out what happened. There have been aftershocks ranging in sizes from 2 to 3. 6 magnitude keeping our eye on this as the earthquake aftershocks have wreaked some damage. This is damage at the Safeway Store near where the earthquake occurred. Everything has been tossed around. Im told this is new video just in right now. An Office Building that has been kind of disassembled in napa. You can see a chunk of the corner of that building dislodged and now on the ground. That is not atypical of what we see in places throughout the bay area. We saw in vallejo there was a church that was the talk of the town this morning. Bricks have been excised out of the building and on to the street. It was very disturbing and very unsettling for people waking up wondering what is going on. Again, an earthquake at 3 20 this morning. What we want to do now is hear directly from people who are on the scene in vallejo when this happened. Heres what some of the bystanders have to say. There were flashes of light in the historic 1912 building. It was a serious rocker. I woke up and i was calling out for my wife. Flashes of light and 30, 60 seconds and then i felt an incredible shake. At first i thought there was a bomb that went off or something and thats what they heard in napa, too. I just listened to the radio. Its epicenter was ten miles down. Yeah. That is actually napa what youre looking at right now. An Office Building in napa that has been dechunked. Literally, an entire room has been removed from that building. Napa, vallejo, sonoma, feeling the effects of the earthquake that occurred at 3 20. Were trying to assess the risks that have been posed to you. All kinds of aftershocks. Dozens, although not as strong as the original earthquake. Weve seen water main breaks and fires in napa, chp was on the phone with us about 10, 15 minutes ago, talking to them about the greatest concern that they have right now are cracks in the road and drivers not seeing them. If youre on the roadway, please pay careful attention around routes 121 and 29. You want to exercise extreme caution. Good news that the chp told us that they have been checking bridges and major structures in the bay area and none of them have evidence to this point any sort of compromising of their integrity. They seem to be in tact without issue. But its just spooky. This is something that people havent seen necessarily of this size for a while. In terms of just the magnitude. The last time we saw Something Like this was in 1989 in loma prieta. This was not the west napa faultline, which would have been the obvious assumption since it was so close to where the epicenter was. This was the franklin faultline. It was a faultline that had been dormant for 1. 6 million years. But today was the day where it became active. Again, we have not heard any reports of anyone being seriously injured. Mostly just road damage and cosmetic damage. What we want to do is find out where things stand with the usgs. Dave is kind enough to join us. The last time we talked about this, you were telling me the location of the fault wasnt completely known. You knew it was near the west napa fault. What is the franklin fault and has it really been dormant for 1. 6 million years . Yeah. It is further south and i cant say its been dormant for 1. 6 million years. Im not quite sure where that number comes from but its very unlikely that the franklin fault was the cause of this earthquake. And, really, i think its not that important right now what name we give to the fault. I think was we do the work and the aftershocks develop and then we can go back and look at the geology and whats been done before, well have a much better feeling for what the actual fault might have been. And i think at this point in time it really doesnt make much, you know, very much sense and its not very important what name we give to it. But it certainly was not the franklin fault. Okay. Good to clarify that, then, because we had seen that reported. Its not the franklin fault but you also indicated its minutia. Here we are at 6 00 on your sunday and people are still experiencing aftershocks. Last time we talked to you, you said there had been 15. Ive heard that number has greatly increased since. What have you seen regarding aftershocks . Well, the aftershocks are beginning to define sort of a nor northnorthwest trending zone and that will give us information about the structure that produced it. Theres an analysis that theres a 54 probability that there could be a magnitude 5 aftershock. Thats something that has developed here in the last couple of hours. Do you want to repeat that one for time . What is the probability . 54 in the next seven days that we could have a magnitude 5 aftershock. Okay. Would that set you on edge . What sort of things would you tell people, if thats the case, to be ready for, how to prepare themselves, literally, for that type of an event . Well, a magnitude 5 is going to produce strong shaking. Its not going to be as strong as the 6 but if things that fell off the shelves are put back could fall off again. For the next week, people should be fundamentally prepared for anything. And i think thats simply good advice. When you told me earlier this morning that theres a 5 to 10 chance of something we saw earlier, the 6. 0 earthquake was setting the table for a stronger earthquake, its unlikely but possible, what do we know about that . Those are just historical statistics from what we know about california. We cant pin any specific probability or different probability to something larger happening for this event and looking over 150 earthquakes in california, sometimes a 5 or 5. 5 or a 6 is followed by something bigger but most of the time it isnt. What would it take for this to be historically significant, then, other than spooking people who woke up this morning who describe it as intense and kind of prolonged jolting, these earthquakes and the aftershocks . What would you describe as taking this to a threshold of something significantly historically . I dont know right now that you can give it any historical significance. Its one of these typical highfive typical 6. 0 earthquakes that we have had historically in the bay area and weve had a number of these since the late 1960s. David, a question popped up a second go that id like to run through you. Is it the deeper the earthquake within the grounds crust or i should say within the ground, the wider the effects are felt or the shallower . I know it was only 6. 2 miles into the earth. Is that a good thing or bad thing . Oh, thats a very typical depth for earthquakes of this size and actually for earthquakes on the major fault in the bay area. They typically start around 10 kilometers or 6 miles below the surface. So this is sort of right in there with all of its colleagues. We just dound out that queen of the Valley Hospital in napa has 70 patients that have been admitted. None with serious injuries but seven admitted in that one hospital in napa. We are hearing that cuts and bruises are possible. Nothing major. Would you expect to see folks coming out and seeing the same kind of injuries throughout the day . Im sure as the day progresses there will probably be more reports of injuries and well get a much better handle on what type of damage actually occurred and over what area, you know, what the extent of it was. Again, right now were sort of at the beginning of this and, as you say, a lot of people are waking up or they have been awake and maybe they are just rolling out of bed so a lot is going to happen over the next, you know, three to four hours. So who from the usgs is on the ground and how do they dead dues what our risk is Going Forward . Well, a group will look at the evidence of faulting, if theres any other types of ground information, liqefaction and so well have a small team that goes up sometime early this morning and maybe in just a fewer hours and well begin to have a look around. You said liquefaction what does that mean . Thats when soil and sandy deposits basically lose their they turn into a fluid and they can flow. Sand volcano gets blown out from slightly greater depths and the surface loses its strength and anything sitting on the surface could sink down, could keel over. And when you have an area like where the earthquake occurred, where you have a large river, like napa river and you have tributaries coming into it, you have a lot of saturated soil and you have basically you know, you have poor soil conditions and thats subject to amplifying the shaking and so you can get these other features, other types of ground breakage associated, even a magnitude 6 when you have bad soil conditions and thats something that may have occurred. Once you do, well check back in with you to find out what youre looking at right now. Thank you very much, david. What youre looking at is the aftermath of the earth kweak and what has occurred in stores and building, streets, roadways this morning. Video that has been submitted to us by viewers and people who have been able to scoop up video and second it on over to us. This is in vallejo. A lot of people in that community were shaken up by that and worried that there would be other damage. To this point, we havent seen anything significant or at least havent heard about anything significant that would mean anyones safety was jeopardized. You will see Community Landmarks that have been affected. Weve seen water main breaks in napa, fires in mobile home parks. This here, actually im going to correct myself. This is in vallejo. We have new video of damage in vallejo. This appears to be utility lines there and im sorry. This is napa. This is a house in napa. This is the first video weve seen yet this morning that shows residences that have been severely damaged and hopefully this person was able to get out okay. What were told is there are no serious injuries. Many people have been at the hospital with cuts and bruises but nothing in terms of fatalities or serious injuries yet. And we certainly hope it stays that way. Lets join cheryl herd. Youre in napa. Does the scene look different . It looks a lot different. Im at third and brown and there is substantial damage here to some Historic Buildings. Ive been told that some of these buildings have been renovated within the last ten years. A lot of folks have been called in to work and they had to move at a different location. Im here by a jail bondsman location and were live on the air and this is your business here. Mine is the coffee shop in the middle. Reporter and the earthquake woke you up . Yes. It woke me up. I came down here to see everything. Im actually pretty lucky compared to other people out here. Reporter you guys cant see it but this roof is pretty much caved in. Because we are cordoned off here, we cant see much but it looks like theres substantial damage. This gentleman owns the business in the middle of the block. Have you ever seen anything like it . No, not here. Reporter we also see a car here, sam, bricks have fallen on it. Pretty much demolished. Windows are broken on the side and back and front. People are milling and and just starting to wake up. The earthquake hit about 3 20 this morning. People are starting to wake up, coming outside, looking at all of the damage. Its pretty horrific out here. All of the businesses that ive seen downtown, the lights are out but the Traffic Signals are either blinking or they are on. Maybe some Emergency Service power is kicking in. I did notice that at the Napa State Hospital there were no lights on there. I also saw emergency crews flying down the road on highway 99 headed to various locations looking for fire. Havent seen any fires yet. But the biggest damage ive seen so far theres a trailer park over off of napa with a couple trailers on fire. But you know whats interesting, the Senior Citizen center, they are all out front on jefferson street right around the corner. Whats your name, sir . Mark. Reporter and you live in napa . Yeah. I live here. Reporter did you see any fire . No, in our neighborhood we had no fire. But, you know, theres a trailer park and probably gas. What we did was we turned off all of the gas, you know, and checked our hot water heaters. And then i got up and went to some friends houses. Reporter i dont mean to cut you off but he brings up a really good point. People, if youre listening, what you should do is check your gas gauges and water heaters. Turn your gas off and if you smoke, dont light up a cigarette or anything like that because it could be dangerous. These are things that ive been learning along the way. People are Milling Around and going right up to the damage. People are just stopping me, as you just heard, talking to me about what is going on. Were gathering information. The napa county supervisor is here giving interviews and letting everyone know what is going on. As soon as we can get pictures for you, well bring it to you, sam. Happy that you brought that up, cheryl. Lots of good wisdom to share. If youre out there and seeing things where you live, send in pictures to isee nbcbayarea. Com. Well get that out on our airwaves so people can find out what is going on. Cheryl, are you still with me . Reporter im with you. We saw an image of a house in napa that seemed to have collapsed or certainly was structurally damaged. Weve seen landmarks that have been similarly hurt but not so much residences. Are you seeing a lot of residential areas that clearly have experienced damage to their homes or something of the like . Reporter a lot of people are saying that this earthquake kind of threw them out of bed. Just relying on people that ive been talking to people on social media and what im seeing with my eyes, it seems that a lot of the damage is to the historical buildings downtown and right down here at third and brown in napa. As im walking and looking and talking to you, im seeing damage after damage. Theres a gaping hole in the Justice Building here on the Old City Hall here. I just looked up and saw that for the very first time. As i said, theres a car here heavily damaged. The windows are broken out. Im looking across the street at the newer buildings and i dont see any structural damage to the naked eye but as you look across the street, you see a lot of damage. The county supervisor told me that renovations have been going on downtown and we hear all about getting things earthquake safe and we see the reason why its very important right now, sam. Cheryl, thank you very much. Shocking images coming to us from all over the north bay, east bay area. Cheryl was in vallejo earlier reporting about a church that had seen bricks basically crumbled up and spewed out of the building. The Justice Center has seen a rift in the center of it. We havent seen tons of structural problems to date but weve certainly seen enough where its disconcerting enough to folks especially as people wake up and see that theres a 6. 0 earthquake, the largest earthquake in california since 1989 in loma prieta. We have a chopper, im told, on our way. Lets see if you can get more of a birdseye view of what it looks like up there. Looks like we lost it. It looks like the epicenter of this earthquake was in American Canyon, as you can see at the bottom of your screen. We have a graphic which demonstrat demonstrates exactly where it started. Well show it to you momentarily. But it was very close to the napa airport. 6 to 7 miles southwest of downtown napa. This is where the earthquake originated and it has had impacts all over the bay area from santa rosa, petaluma, all the way east to fairfield, vacaville, and even sacramento people are reporting feeling effects of it. We have not heard any reports of serious injuries. People have been injured. 70 people were admitted to the queen Valley Hospital as of about ten minutes ago. Thats in napa. 70 patients were told have mostly cuts, bruises, and bumps. Nothing lifethreatening to this point and the hospital officials want you to know that they are operating normally. They still have capacity and beds open. They can still see people if you need medical attention and feel free to check that out. Happy to report we havent had any serious indication of injury yet. Okay. We are looking at where the epicenter of that earthquake was. A magnitude 6. 0 felt throughout the region. We have our chopper that is up with an aerial look at what is going on out there. And again, concerns we lost our chopper again. Well get it back up for you. In the meantime, christina, what can you tell about the earthquake and the damage its enflikt inflicted so far this morning . People are starting to post on social media. Thats how im getting information this morning. I can tell you, sam, biggest earthquake since 1989 in loma prieta. Everybody from the north bay to south bay are reporting feeling that earthquake this morning and probably knew what to do but maybe you didnt. This is what you do in this situation. You drop, cover, and hold under sturdy furniture under a table or desk and meet up with family members right away. You have to have a plan in place during these situations. We dont have any warnings to earthquakes. The danger lingers when it comes to aftershocks up to two weeks. Definitely, if you dont have supplies, you dont have that stock of water, this is the time to get it. Were going to be back in just a minute and talk about the focus of the earthquake and how likely this is to happen. We have a lot of information. Ill be back in just a bit. Back to you, sam. Thank you, christina. Good words of advice there. Lets swing it over to mike inouye. Mike, the last time we talked to the chp, they were monitoring cracks in the roads. So far, no official closures. The first thing well talk about, sam, is our official closure and its a major transition in the north bay were focused anything north of the golden gate bridges. The issue happened with the kweak in the napa county. Were talking about this, highway 37 off of interstate 80 south of American Canyon boulevard. Highway 29 is what people know this as. Its currently closed because of some pretty significant damage from the earthquake. Highway 37 itself is open heading over to sonoma raceway which has a big event today. Were waiting to find out whether or not they are going to continue with that race. They have to check their site as well. Over here, highway 29, youll continue over to wilson avenue and then loop back to highway 37. Its a little farther south in vallejo where the epicenter was closer to downtown. The city council is tweeting, please stay out of the area for everybodys safety. A lot of surface streets are being closed. We have signal issues and reports of roadway damage that are currently being assessed by cal trans. Right near the interchange theres cracking going on on the roadway as well as over here. This stretch of highway 12 and highway 29 and Congress Valley, thats basically old sonoma road where where inspections are going on. This entire area in napa valley is where they are doing assessments for significant cracks in our roadway. Continuing to track that. If you dont have to come to downtown napa, please stay out of the area for the time being. Bridges are moving smoothly. B. A. R. T. Was not running at the time but they are running their trains on schedule. San Francisco Muni says there is no damage and they are running on schedule. The closure of highway 37 and sonoma boulevard and local traffic through napa, hold off. If you dont have to head there today, hold off and let everybody do their work up there. For now, well continue to track the roads, bridges, and ill send it back to you. Mike, thank you so much. One thing to note here is you need to pay close attention to aftershocks. Weve seen dozens and dozens of aftershocks. Weve been talking to the usgs all morning. Youre seeing pictures of people sending in what they experienced this morning. Intense, prolonged jolts. 6. 0 is the largest that weve seen since 1989 in loma prieta. Chp has checked the structural landmarks of the bay area and most of the issues have been confined to the roadways. I am joined now by Brad Thompson who is part of the fire and emergency crews working the races up there. Brad, are you lending your expertise and help to local officials . Youre from indianapolis. This must be a bit of a novelty for you . Yes. To be very honest with you, i just received a couple of text messages. Being from the midwest, we shook it off and went, okay, that was weird and went about our night. Im kind of just now learning what the effects are and what thats going to mean for us and what we need to do. Have there been any overtures to you to lend your help and other folks up in san rafael, a myriad of fires in napa, bricks on the roadways, cracks in the roadways. Has anyone reached out to you to find out if you can help . They have not quite yet but, ill be honest with you, theres about 15 of us here that are a part of the safety group and were probably going to regroup. I appreciate your time from the ground up there. Well check in shortly. In the meantime, lets move on and speak with mesh sheichelle live from usgs. Michelle, what have you gleaned from them . Reporter im told that this is officially known as the south napa earthquake. Im joined now by brett agart. What are you learning so far this morning . It was a magnitude 6 earthquake and weve had 30 aftershocks. We expect more and in the next week we could see an aftershock of up to 5. Reporter in a week you could see that . Yes. Early on you see small aftershocks but you dont usually have the smallest one right after. In the next week theres a 50 chance of having an aftershock of 5 or larger in this area. Reporter what does this tell you . These aftershocks are helpful because they give us more information about what the orientation and position of the fault is, especially at depth. We know where faults are generally at the surface but this fault this earthquake occurred at about a depth of 10 kilometers so we dont know the precise fault gee om mometry. We need more information about precisely where this earthquake was and this was an earthquake that occurred in an area where we have several faults. The last most recent sort of significant earthquake in this area was magnitude of 4. 9 in napa that occurred in 2000. This is an active area, weve had faults and it was expected at some point in time in this location. Reporter what i found interesting is that you mentioned that you may never even know exactly what fault it is. Well, magnitude 6 earthquake, unless it ruptures to the surface, it is often sometimes ambiguous when you have multiple faults, known faults in the area. So well have a better understanding of what this earthquake did but without additional information, sometimes it may take us decades to get information to know the precise fault geometry on this sort of very smalllength scale in this area when you have to go down several kilometers or miles into the earth. What kind of information are studying for future earthquakes that this can potentially give . So this is a very important point to point out since its been 25 years since the loma prieta earthquake. At that point, we had about 100 instruments throughout the area and now we have several hundred. So a much denser concentration of stations so this is a much better picture of what the shaking is like from this earthquake and we can map it out to better predict the future shakings in the future. Reporter can you point out these dots and what those mean . Sure. So this light blue circle was the main shock. That was the earthquake that occurred magnitude 6 and 3 20 this morning and all of the orange dots surrounding it were earthquakes that occurred up to an hour ago and the red dots are earthquakes within the last hour. The size correspondents to the magnitude. We have a much bigger dot for the magnitude 6 and then most of these are on a magnitude of 1 to 2 range. There are lines in the northwest direction so most of the aftershocks have occurred most near napa from where the main shocks occurred and this is also the orientation of the fault. Youll notice that there is still a cloud. They are not lining up along the fault as we get more information and data and can refine the locations, hopefully they will come closer together and well have a better picture of what exactly this earthquake did. Reporter brad, thank you so much for that information. Well keep you mostposted from. Back to you, sam. And im laura garciacannon who has been doing a fantastic job. Were following the earthquake that occurred about 3 30 this morning . Exactly. This was about 7 miles southwest of napa. The fact that it was in napa does not preclude the fact that there were effects all over the area from petaluma all the way out to fairfield, vacaville, even in sacramento people were reporting jolting and sensations from the original earthquake. A 6. 0 magnitude earthquake as you can see on your screen. The largest that weve seen here in california dating all the way back to 1989 in loma prieta. We have images of what that looks like and the various areas around napa. What youre looking at now is downtown napa where we heard from cheryl hurd. We have seen water main breaks in that area, fires at mobile home parks and were told that there has been some damage to residences. Theres a little bit of everything to date. No con firm of serious injuries. Well, actually, just right now, sam, i just got information, the Napa Fire Division in that area have reports of two major injuries. We dont know the extent of those injuries, actually where they have occurred. But as sam was showing you in the previous pictures of downtown napa, the Old Buildings there, the structure with all of the bricks, all those bricks fell. Look at that. Were actually lucky that the earthquake happened during the night around 3 30 in the morning because that area is frequented by so many residents in that area and visitors. So far two, major injuries reported. As we take a look at some of the damage that were seeing here, were going to find out so much more as the sun is up and they are able to assess the area as well. They are looking at surrounding roads. 37 from the 29 area. 37 from vallejo into napa. There have been reports of buckling on and off the onramp there. They have closed the area but in fact that area has been reopened. Lets check in with mike inouye who is also in this morning. You can give us a pinpoint detail of that area. Mike . Good morning, laura. As laura has been telling you, were focused on the areas of have a have a lay ohio and the connector for highway 37 or sonoma boulevard has been reopened. They have decided that they can reopen the roadway. Some people may see slowing there as folks get off and back on. Prepare for that disruption as you come out of vallejo and over towards highway 29. Also, remember, discovery kingdom is in the area and as you get to start with your day, some folks will head in for breakfast. Traffic over towards sonoma raceway which has a continuation of their event going on today and weve heard of no disruption over there. As far as chp is concerned, there are no problems with the roadways getting to the area but well talk to the folks and their activities. Theres still some damage and power outage in the area presenting a problem for the signals on highway 21 as it comes over towards highway 29. Theres a signal issue because power has been out through a significant portion of napa. Watch the local roadways. In fact, theres so much debris and activity, the council sent out a twitter, please stay out of downtown, everyone, if you dont have to head out there. Highway 12 has a lot of inspections going on between highway 29 and Congress Valley way. This entire stretch is seeing a lot of activity. Cracks in the roadways have been reported and cal trans is assessing this damage. Were watching for this traffic. Keep that in mind. Chp has checked out all of the bridges and roadways. No damage is significant. There have been no problems for the east bay. They are just doing due diligence. The mass transit agencies, this happened before b. A. R. T. Was online and they are running a typical schedule for a sunday. Same thing with the muni system and the rails reporting regular schedules. Watch that local Traffic Control and absolutely if you dont have to go to downtown napa, stay out of the area because of the significant work going on. Back to both of you. Thats right. Again, a 6. 0 earthquake happening in the napa valley area. They are calling it the west napa fault happening at 3 30 this morning causing significant damage, especially in the downtown napa area where they saw a lot of bricks fall and water main break at a mobile home park. That was in napa among all sorts of damage incidents that weve seen in that region. Let me get to one quick thing. Michelle roberts, our reporter on the ground at usgs is telling us that there have been 36 aftershocks. The largest of which was a magnitude of 3. 6. That occurred about four miles southwest of napa. Six miles northwest of the American Canyon area which is where the earthquake originated. This is something that you really need to keep in mind. There have been continual aftershocks throughout the day and morning. That doesnt mean that this is done by any way, shape, or form. This could last for a couple of hours or a couple more days. We were also told by the usgs that its possible, not likely but possible that this earthquake, the 6. 0 that we saw earlier this morning is nearly a prelude to a larger event. They said statistically the odds to that are 5 to 10 . Its not likely but that could happen. Now i believe were going to check in with jodi hernandez. Shes live in the American Canyon area. Shes joining us by phone. Jodi, what do you see there . I actually just pulled up to American Canyon and im standing outside the Safeway Store and im looking through the window and i can see employees with brooms and mops trying to sweep up broken items that have fallen off the shelves here. Also, theres a hair salon right next door and i can see hairspray cans and other items strewn about. It was a huge jolt for my home in green valley this morning, jolted us out of bed. Fortunately we didnt have any damage in our home but ive been talking to friends and theyve been texting me pictures of wine bottles and glasses and all kinds of stuff broken in their home. So a really very scary morning. People are just the sun is up now. People are just starting to come out and everybody is looking around and looking through we windows. This was a very scary event for all of us who live in this region. No doubt. I was here for the 1989 loma prieta earthquake. That was such a rolling one. You could actually see the streets rolling along. This one is described as a big jolt. What did you see, jodi . Reporter it was a big jolt. I was here in 1989 at uc berkeley and that was a real rolling motion and the building swaying back and forth. This one, as you mentioned, was more of a shaker, a jolter. We jumped out of bed. My first thing was to try to find my kids to make sure that they were okay. They had just finished a hiphop show so they were fast asleep. They didnt feel it. Certainly my husband and i were very alarmed. So it was a bit different but very, very strong. Okay. No kidding. What a struggle to get out of bed. These pictures are live from napa. Emergency crews are going through the streets. No doubt they are going to continue to assess some of the damage that we see. Numerous fire trucks are out there. No doubt those crews will be walking as well assessing damage, probably looking for people that quite possibly could have been injured. Weve only heard of two major injuries so far from this earthquake. 70 people have been admitted, at least by last check 20 minutes ago, to the queen of the Valley Hospital there. We just learned and those injuries were all considered to be bruises or minor cuts. The indy car race will be going on. That is going to be going on. Napa, as weve seen throughout the course of the morning, experienced a good amount of damage in all sorts of ways from water main breaks to fires. The Justice Building in downtown napa had a chunk of it removed by this earthquake, potentially related to why youre seeing fire trucks patrolling the area, probably assessing the damage that laura just mentioned. It comes in different kinds of varieties. Napa is also very close to the epicenter of this earthquake. The epicenter is American Canyon and napa airport only a couple of miles away from where this all originated. Now were seeing it throughout the bay area in terms of its impact. What youre about to see now is some ground video from the scene. Weve already talked to chp and they said plenty of roads have been affected by cracking and concern for drivers trying to make sure they dont end up in places where they could split their tire or end up on the side of the road. This is from downtown napa. Exactly. This is what we are talking about. All of the bricks have fallen from the Historic Buildings in the area. They have toppled upon cars. Were hearing lots of reports of damaged cars in that area. Once again, the live aerial shot of downtown napa. This is the Justice Building. Look at that. Just a corner of it kind of carved off, almost looking as if it suffered from an explosion but in fact just the earthquake shaking that, such a strong 6. 0 force and just crumbling that. Happening at about 3 30 this mornin morning, so thankfully people were sleeping otherwise we would have seen so many more injuries. The captain says who lives in that area, there have been so many fires and collapses they have responded to, had he to get over fallen furniture in his home just to check on his family. He said its the worst hes ever experienced. Right now the sun is up. No doubt were going to see a lot of assessment and hear more reports of damage in that area but were able to give you these live aerial shots from that area. Laura, we learned that they are doing a press briefing momentarily at the napa fire. This is the biggest fire that weve seen to date from the napa area and were going to learn more about what the efforts have been like and what Additional Resources they may need to deal with all of the problems in the county. Again, i want to emphasize the fact that there are still aftershocks going on. There have been dozens of them. You need to be on alert. Some advice to keep in mind here, as we have heard from folks from fire and the usgs as well throughout the morning, you need to check your gas lines and to check some of the foundational elements around your house to make sure there is nothing that would need to be compromised to alert someone of immediately. That is oftentimes one of the major consequences of earthquakes, is something having to do with your power, your gas. On that note, many people have actually lost power this morning. Thousands. We have a map of that pg e map showing all of the areas in the north bay and east bay that have been impacted. I can give you a quick heads up, santa rosa, st. Elena, napa, and sonoma have somewhere between 5,000 and more outages. The red dots indicate over 5,000 and the orange dots indicate up to 5,000. And the thing about that is people are waking up maybe without any information as well which can be frightening. Its a good idea to see how your neighbors are doing and make sure that they are well. Well continue to take these live pictures of downtown napa as we see people awake, assess other damage and whatnot. Want to check in with meteorologist crea meteorologist christina loren. You have a map. Yeah. A lot of people are without power but still have their 4g and 3g so were getting reports on social media. If you have anything to show us, please, you are our eyes and ears. Put it on our twitter page or facebook page. A lot of people out there on the streets. This is from an earlier shot of the mobile home fire we showed you video of. Also, damage to a salon in downtown napa. You can see the damage. Were trying to keep you updated to what is happening and this is from the usgs. This is statistically speaking what we are in store for as we head throughout the next seven days. 54 chance of a 5. 0 or greater in the next seven days. Those are vegas odds. 10 to 15 chance this could be a p precursor to a larger quake. Weve had 30 aftershocks so far. Ill show you a map of those aftershocks and what we could be in store for as we head throughout the next 48 hours and beyond. So thats what were looking at right now. Ill head it back to you, sam and laura. Thank you so much, christina. Probably one of the most enlightening things that were seeing is the area as the sun is up over the napa area. Downtown napa suffered major damage there with the major buildings crumbling there and fire crews have been going through the street moments ago. Were expecting a News Conference later on this morning. 6. 0 magnitude earthquake. And we are now introducing a scroll at the bottom of your screen providing you with the latest information for traffic incidents and injuries and structures that have been damaged in any way throughout the bay area from napa all the way to the east bay. Make sure that youre checking that out as you listen to the information that were getting into our newsroom. We did speak with the usgs earlier today and they were kind of describing the fact that this is not an historical anomaly in terms of the earthquake despite what you might think. This is the largest one weve seen since loma prieta. Thats 20plus years. Thats a long time. But what David Schwartz was saying, with the usgs, weve seen a ton of earthquakes in the 5 to 6 magnitude range over the last 40 to 60 years, the biggest concern is 80 aftershocks and some three dozen since the earthquake this morning and what could come of it, as christina mentions, its not very likely but its just a precursor to a larger event. Which we are all aware of living here in the bay area. No doubt what will happen is chargeable radios and what not. Its a stark reminder of when a big one will hit. A 5. 0 or greater and in the next several days, as the days length then, as it gets extended out, those rates go down but in the next seven or so days they could feel a lot of aftershocks in this area. This is so interesting giving the live aerial shots where you see chimneys and the top of certain buildings that have just completely crumbled to the ground. I believe, laura, im going to confirm this with our producer, but the governor is getting ready to comment. The governor released a statement. I do have that statement right now. My office of Emergency Services has been on full activation since early this morning and is working with state and local emergency managers, First Responders and transportation officials to respond to impacts and residents in critical infrastructure. They are doing all they can to help residents and those living in affected areas should follow their guidance and instruction. Thats from governor brown. He actually resides in the oakland area. Whether he was in that area or for the, we dont know. Were focusing on napa this morning but so many people in the bay area have felt this. You mentioned something earlier, laura, the comparisons between what people experienced during loma prieta and what they did today, today we talked to cheryl hurd this morning and diane dwyer, many of our closeknit members here at the nbc bay area and they said the intensity was notable but how long it lasted was something that stuck in their mind. It was 20 to 25 seconds and jolted them out of bed. It really grabbed their attention and spooked some folks. Jeff ranieri described what he saw this morning, too. Exactly. Lets go live to jodi hernandez. What do you know, jodi . Reporter were standing in front of the Safeway Store and were going to walk over here and give you a look at what is happening. You can see that there are items, a lots of products on the ground, soda and soup and other things. Theres a sign, if we come over here on the door to our valued customer, our store is presently closed. People are coming over here to do some shopping and theres no word on how long it will take them to clean it up. Also here, i have a business owner, a man who own as ups store just down the way. This is arvin. You live here in American Canyon. Describe what you felt. Well, early in the morning at 3 20 we feel that our bed is sinking and our whole property is shaking and it was like swinging on a sweing and we thought a big earthquake coming and we saw a lot of stuff falling down on the shelves and in the bathroom and in the room and we gone through the house and we saw everything a mess around there. Reporter wow. Pretty scary, i imagine. It was scary. We try to come out but we stay in the house and we try to call our friends. Everybody is fine. We call a man in the city and he says we are fine here now. Reporter you also have a business down the way, the ups store. Have you had a chance to survey the damage . I went inside and i saw some boxes fell down from the shelves and it was okay but still damages were some cabinet fell down. So well check that one later on. Reporter what do you think of this . Well, its a big experience of life. Never happen like that in American Canyon. We thought earthquake not over here. But it is earthquake. Reporter thank you so much for talking to us. Lets look inside the Safeway Store where you can see, again, the work continues. These workers are trying desperately to clean things up as quickly as possible. A big mess. We can still see a lot of liquid and items on the floor. I saw pictures from the starbucks. They had a similar situation over there. And ive seen a lot of pictures from friends who live in this area. I live pretty close myself and a lot of minor damage, things falling off walls and that kind of thing. But fortunately nothing serious that we have seen here in American Canyon. We believe this is the epicenter and people did feel it quite violently. One woman described it as a very violent shake. I live up the way and was shaken out of bed myself. Reporting live, im jodi hernandez,
