Reporter at nyu center for womens health, i was lucky enough to have onestop shopping for all the poking and prodding, i mean fine medical testing, that comes along with turning 50. Girl, here we go. This is a simple test and it doesnt hurt. Reporter at first, something i had never done before, a bone density test. So this thing just scans your bones . Thats what its doing. Thats exactly what its doing right now. You dont feel a thing, right . No, i dont feel a thing. I love bone density tests. I had no idea. Why would anyone say it was a big deal. Who said it was a big deal . I dont know, somebody. They lied to you. I could have taken a nap. Reporter my bone density tested normal, but it was the next test which had me nervous. So now on to something youve been through before, mammography. I know it must conger up memories of the journey youve been on. Reporter in 2007 that journey with Breast Cancer included a mammogram just like the one i was about to have. It was a scary time. Even though i had been moving forward ever since, these tests do bring back a lot of memories. Theres Something Weird i have to say about walking into a hospital, seeing similar faces, remembering, and you go in and things just trigger things. Especially when you were diagnosed, youre healthy, it was routine, you got a surprise. I want you to turn this way. Reporter in the last seven years, i have had several followup mammograms. Im sorry. I have cold hands but a warm heart. Reporter it doesnt make them more comfortable, especially with a couple of camera crews in the room. The Necessary Evil is over. Thank you. Youre welcome. Reporter an ultrasound was the next order of business since i have dense breast tissue and a history of Breast Cancer. What are you seeing . Normal breast tissue. Say that again. Normal breast tissue. Yay yay, yay. That is awesome. Im so happy to be laying here on this table. Im so happy. I dont even care who is in this room with me. Reporter i had one more test, something i had been putting off out of fear, my heart. Heart disease is the leading killer of women in the u. S. It also took the life of someone i loved, my dad. I was only in college when my dad suddenly died of a heart attack, around the same age i am now. Because of my age, cardiologist doctor Nisa Goldberg suggested i get an electrocardiogram to check my heart rhythm. Because of my Family History, she also suggested a stress test to check my rhythm during physical exertion. How are you feeling . Pretty good. Breathing okay . Yes, i think so. We did the test. Give it to me straight. How am i at 50 . I think youre fabulous at 50. Your cardiac exam, your physical exam is normal. Reporter all right. All great news or so i thought. We then went ahead and did a hemoglobin a1c that measures your average blood sugar over three months. And your level was 5. 9, and normal is less than 5. 7. So we need to work on that. Too much sugar. Too much sugar. The 5. 9 puts you in the pre diabetes range. Youre kidding. Im not kidding. Reporter so dr. Goldberg says cookies were going to have to go. Bummer. But luckily i had one more appointment left, the only one i had been looking forward to. Hi. How are you . Reporter with my Breast Cancer surgeon. You had a mammogram and ultrasound today. Both tests were negative, so there was nothing suspicious at all on either test which is really good. Yay, yay, yay. Its a really great moment because youre not defined by Breast Cancer. Youre right. I remember the day after i was clear, you said lets remember what just happened today. Its so funny, the other thing i remember when i look at you and i cant even think about it. I remember it well, it was just before i was going in to surgery and my mom was standing there and you gave thumbs up, said to her im going to take good care of your daughter. I remember my mom looked at you and held your hands. I was lying on the bed. For some reason, thats my memory, you comforting her. And i thought, like and it all sort of comes back, you know. Its weird. It was a moment. It was a moment. Anyway, i remember it very well. Thank you. Then i put the gas on and slept through the whole thing. You have a lot of guts, honey. You do. Thank you. I love you. Youre doing fabulous. Im going to come around for a hug. Shes the best. By the way, it does feel so good to get that news. Shes a girl. Shes 13. They see what they see as a desirable figure now which is the curves. You go to the store if youre naturally thin, you dont want someone beating you down. Reporter for 25 years i worked as a sales rep and moved my way up quickly, eventually to vice president. But then the economy changed drastically. During that time, i had to lay off hundreds of people over a period of five years, and somewhere in the back of my mind i knew it could happen to me. At age 55 it did. I was disappointed and uncertain about my future, and then as if on cue, my health took a turn for the worse. I started feeling achy, had trouble breathing, and eventually found out i was suffering from a chronic lung condition, severe emphazema and add to that lime disease and debilitating arthritis. I felt like my life was spinning out of control until my daughter, a successful massage therapist and yoga teacher at the time, kept encouraging me try yoga. I thought it was a bunch of hokus pokus. I thought, oh, sure, ill try it someday. Later that year i tried a class with a friend. The instructor was middle age, round in the middle, and had great hair. Hallelujah. If she could do it, so could i. I loved it, and i decided to take a 200 hour yoga teacher training. I started teaching classes and doing private lessons. Now i found my calling. Even while tethered to an oxygen tank, i still teach yoga three times a week at the age of 56. You can swont see me doing a headstand any time soon, but you can always reinvent yourself at any age. I wrapped my son in a towel for two days, and on the second day i said, yolani, dont worry, mommy will never be this broke again. I was willing to put away all my excuse. I was willing to put away my fears. I was willing to know what i dont know, to go find it. I was willing to have my knees knocking and my teeth chattering. Risk it. It all needed to look good to reinvent lisa, and i look up now, and my life is barely recognizable. Im that kid that got a c in school. Im not an a. P. Student or advanced student. I got kicked out of college my first year because i couldnt afford to go. Im not the person thats supposed to be running a multimilliondollar business, but because my passion said i want to be something more than ive ever seen. Every woman, every man has the exact same ability. Why . Because the human spirit is unbreakable. Its unbreakable. Preach it. I love you. Can me and hoda find our passion . Exactly.
