The city hall, the fire house, the school, all the businesses levelled. 16 people critically injured in these twin tornados yesterday. At least two people were killed, one of them a 5yearold girl. Rare twin twisters caught on camera. Oh, dear god. Reporter Storm Chasers ch captured the moment. In that moment, this town, a selfdescribed Rural Community of 378 people became a disaster area. Huge. There was two of them. One back over here and one was coming right at us. Reporter the tornado went right down main street. The northeast part of town are all severely damaged beyond repair. Reporter a striking example, before and after photos of the towns middle school, the windows blown out by the twister, part of the second floor ripped away. One woman hid in the basement of her farmhouse with three family members. Youre just kind of in a state of shock because its you cant believe that it can be gone so fast. Reporter some Storm Chasers got dangerously close as a tornado crossed the road right in front of them revealing another twister. Emergency response crews will be on the scene here in pilger today and so will the national guard, helping these people stunned by sudden loss. Recovery well underway as residents are being allowed in to see what remains of their homes. Many of them that are Still Standing will have to be torn down because theyre not sound. You can see that one storm chaser obviously stops to shoot it, but then a second car keeps going. Right toward anyway, we still have a lot going on right now. M. , we have more thunderstorms, then thinged kind of calmed down. Temperatures will be in the 90s. We also have a wide swath of severe weather. This first half, we could see tornados out of these. And then as this whole swath moves to the east, this is more about damaging winds from green bay, chicago, cleveland, new york also in this. And then we look for it to continue on into tomorrow. Look at the risk of storms from bismarck across to chicago. And a lot of rain out of this. Were talking some areas picking up 3 to 5 inches of rain. As we move east from omaha on into minneapolis, we could see 1 to 2 more inches of rain, guys. So this is going to be a longlasting event. And we have a heat wave to talk about. In the meantime, theres more violence raging in iraq. President obama is deploying more u. S. Forces to that country. Their mission, to provide support and security for u. S. Work skpeers and the u. S. Military is deploying 170 extra soldiers and marine. Also deploying an extra 100 troops to the region to set up emergency airfields and manage them should an emergency evacuation be necessary. The fighters from the al qaeda offshoot isis stop trucks on the highway. They independently confirmed video, but it shows the terrifying religious violence tearing this region apart. They claim they are sunni, just like the gunman. The militant asked how sunnis pray. Its a test. The answers are apparently unsatisfactory, the three are executed. There are still Many Americans in iraq. The embassy in baghdad is the biggest anywhere and also the most expensive. It normally employs up to 15,000 staff and contractors, but many have been flown out to safer locations. The u. S. Backed Iraqi Government is trying to keep the militants away from baghdad, pushing ahead with a counteroffensive, with air strikes. And their army is being reinforced with new troops. That looked possible afy days ago, when the iraqi army was deserting. Now, less likely. The iraqi army has finally mobilized and is keeping the militants otherwise the city. Gm saying it will rework or replace the keys to 3 million cars in the u. S. To keep them from shutting down. Its the same problem that gm admits caused at least 54 crashes and 13 deaths in smaller cars and led to the recall of 2. 6 million vehicles in february. Now the new recall involves another 3. 1 million cars in the u. S. , most of them older models. Gm says it needs to urgently rework the keys. They come with a key that has a big hole or a slot. If that is carrying too many extra keys, it can bump the ignition switch to the off position. Losing power streeering, eve the cinching up of the belt, that is serious. It can result in more injury if a cash occurs. Reporter this latest recall comes just two weeks after gmceo sawed the results of an internal outside investigation had found a pattern of incompetence and neglect at gm. We failed these customers and we must face up to it and we must learn from it. Gm acknowledges it failed to order a recall for ten years while customers died in cars that it nigh had a problem. The company says that the culture has changed and it will take a very aggressive approach to all safety issues. Alaska is starting a twoyear experiment putting pregnancy tests in bars to fight the high rate of birth defects. Its meant to make certain women think twice before bingeing on booze. Beginning in december, free pregnancy tests will be available at 20 bars and restaurants in alaska. The goal . To lower the rate of birth defects. According to the cdc, alaskan women of childbearing age are 20 more likely to binge drink than the national average. Alaska also has the highest rate of fetal alcohol syndrome in the country. A condition that causes brain damage and growth problems in children exposed to alcohol during pregnancy. So that women will do the responsible thing when they know theyre pregnant. Reporter state senator pete kelly first proposed the program. A woman who is in a bar can go into the bathroom and have a free pregnancy test, completely private, no forms to fill out. Reporter the twoyear 400,000 program is being led by the university of alaska anchorage. What were trying to do is evaluate the evidence. Is this an effective way of reaching people . Reporter alaska isnt the first place to test the method. In 2012 the minnesota nonprofit healthy brains for children started offering pregnancy tests in upscale bars. Since then its expanded to 20 locations in the u. S. And canada. A lot of anecdotal evidence of people being very thankful that the pregnancy tests are in the bars. Reporter so far no concrete results from that experiment, but the group is helping with the alaska trial. It hasnt yet been rolled out, but its getting mixed reviews. And just one of the groups theyre targeting is middle class women who they say are getting mixed messages about how much alcohol during pregnancy is okay. Usually by untraceable credit cards or bitcoins. This victim recorded his handing over of the ransom. We are going go ahead and type this in the back. Reporter the agency hobbled the russian crime ring responsible disabling its servers. But copy cats are hard at work. Even the fbi acknowledges these cyber criminals wont be stopped for long. Everything on your computer including the irreplaceable photos could still be at risk. The virus disguises itself as attachments anyone might open. Like a courier like dhl or u. P. S. Or fedex. These are carriers that most people use. Theyll see it, click on it, then its launched into their computer. Reporter loretta didnt pay the ransom and now realizes what shes lost. Everything on the computer, all those albums, probably a few thousand pictures are gone. Did you know in the last six months no state has experienced more significant earthquakes than oklahoma . Al, this is not an area we think of earthquakes in. Absolutely not. All that shaking is raising fear amongst some oklahomans prompting warnings that a major earthquake could be imminent. Now new Scientific Evidence is showing this is not necessarily a natural occurrence. Its a half mile wide. Reporter in a state where people are used to watching the skies for danger oh, god. Reporter residents in oklahoma are starting to realize whats happening underground. In the past few months, earthquakes have become an almost daily occurrence. This man owns a wine store in oklahoma. The oklahoma native admits to being a little rattled. Theres no way to predict when ones going to occur. Thats whats so alarming about them for most people. Reporter from 1975 to 2009, oklahoma averaged one earthquake with a magnitude of 3. 0 or greater per year. From 2010 to 2013, that annual average jumped to 40. This year, already 200 earthquakes in the first five and a half months alone. The big question is why. Some recent studies are pointing the finger of blame at the engine that drives oklahomas state economy. The oil and gas industry. Oil companies have been drilling in oklahoma for more than a century, but some scientists believe recent changes in how that drilling is done could explain whats behind this seismic shift. For the past century oil and natural gas were extracted by drilling vertically into easytoreach reservoirs. But those have dried up. So Energy Companies have turned to fracking. Drilling horizontally and using water to fracture the rock in order to extract the oil and natural gas. All those millions of gallons of waste water are then injected back underground. Besides injection wells causing it, what would be another reason for the increase . Well, thats a really good question. The increase is just incredibly dramatic, so there has to be some of these cases that are likely caused by fluid injection. Its just common sense. Reporter in a recent study, geologists traced the largest earthquake in Oklahoma History back to an injection well where they believe the underground pressure created a fore shock which then created the earthquake. Independent Oil Producers are working with Oklahoma State regulators to provide more data, but the Companies Want more scientific proof before they make any drastic and costly changes to their business model. It sounds like youre not closed off to the possibility that waste water injection sites could cause an earthquake. No one has said definitely that this is the cause. And we just think its unfair to point it at this and say this has to be the reason when it doesnt make sense. You know, theres still a lot to be learned. Reporter some states are already taking steps. In ohio, stricter guidelines on waste water injections. In arkansas, a permanent moratorium on new injection wells near any major fault lines. And in california, lawmakers considering to halt all new wells until more studies are done. But back in oklahoma where one in six people are employed by the oil and gas industry and fracking is sometimes as close as your back yard, the subject what, if any, it might have to the dramatic increase in earthquakes is open to debate. Im still not buying that its completely because of the fracking. So nobody seems to be debating that injection wells can cause it, but what you need to prove is somehow its tied to a specific earthquake. Lawmakers and regulators are asking for more science before they place restrictions on the oil and gas industry in oklahoma. Fascinating though. Yeah. Thank you, al. A sobering briefing. 75 of this communitys buildings are gone. 100 of the Central Business district, gone. Gone, the school, the fire house, the church. He said the majority of the buildings that are Still Standing will have to come down because theyre not safe. This was a devastating tornado. The twin tornadoes as you say. Two tornadoes coming out of one storm cell skipping across this northeastern corner of nebraska. 16 people are critically injured from this community. 2 people have been killed. One of them a 5yearold. One in a Traffic Accident which they suspect may have been related to the tornado, but they arent ready to say that yet. They like it at first and then they zero in on their flaws. Why did you want to write it . Well, i think exactly what you said. Its a thought process. I initially loved it, thought it was a great picture. Very fun. Captured a great moment in time. But then i really let my mind get away with myself. I zoned in on myself, my imperfections, my flaws, the things i didnt like. And then i just realized that was irrational, you know, i was going too far with it. I kind of took a step back and relooked at the image and then i decided to see it for what i initially did. Friendship and fun and just having a good time. Well, youre about to be a sophomore at the university of iowa. Youre studying journalism. So you decided to write about your experience. But did you expect the reaction you got . Absolutely not. This has gone way above and beyond my wildest expectations for this piece. Why do you think it resonates with people . I think it resonates just because its not what youre going to see on the front page of a magazine. I think were so used to seeing photoshops and picture perfects that when we change the conversation, it raises some eyebrows. When i looked at this picture, i didnt see cellulite. I honestly didnt. I thought what is she really talking about . And i think thatst a good insight. Because other people dont look at us as harshly as we sometimes look at ourselves. Exactly. Im my own worst critic. I think thats the same for a lot of other people also. Do you think youd like to see people take this lesson from you . And youve been pretty honest about it. This is something youre still struggling with. Its not like you dont see any flaws anymore. Changed into this zen person whos got it all together. Exactly. Its a journey. Tough take it in stride. I dont see a picture of myself and say wow, this is great. Its day by day. But i think with the right mentality it gets so much easier. One of the things you said, apparently this was a professional photographer who happened to snap this on the street. And i know you said in the piece you were mad at first. I said why didnt you photoshop that. Exactly. Thats too bad. Thats what inspired me to write the piece. That was my first reaction, im so used to things being photoshopped and air brushed, i thought it would be so easy to fix that. Why didnt he. We go to South Carolina now where a family is racing against the clock to find a cure for their termly ill 4yearold daughter. This a story with an interesting twist. Dr. Nancy snyderman has this story. Good morning to you. Good morning, matt. This has to do with the parents of eliza oneil who believe an experimental treatment can save her daughters life. But they need money to make it happen. They turned to social media and found incredible support from strangers. Reporter you wouldnt know it just by watching her. But elisa oneil is a fun loving 4yearold who loves to swim in the pool and play dressup. But her life is about to change. She was diagnosed with a syndrome a year ago. A childhood disease that clogs up cells and stops development. By the end of the year, she may lose the ability to speak, walk, and feed herself. Never expecting that you can lose it. Your child has a terminal disease, and theyre going to fade away before your eyes. Reporter glen and tara oneil found hope in an experimental treatment and started to raise the money for the trial. But by february, theyd only raised about 200,000. So glen turned to the internet for answers. I googled, you know, typed in how to make a viral video. And this guy benjamin wong, a freelance photographer said i can come give it a shot if i can sleep on your couch. They didnt charge us a dime. Reporter within two months of posting the video hope is a nice word but we need action. Reporter they raised 1 million. This is more funds than we would normally expect to get from a large institutional grant. And when the money started coming in, 10, 20. And the comments, it energizes us with more and more hope. We still have a long way to go. Reporter the final challenge is raising the remaining 1 million by october. Our job as parents and voice for our children is to do absolutely everything we can to give them a happy, healthy life. We were not going to stop at anything until we have done everything in our power. Any parent that is fortunate enough to have a child grow up healthy, its probably the greatest gift they can have. And what we do is we fight to have a chance at that gift. These parents are desperate to try anything they can to save their daughters life. Still they dont know whether this treatment will work. No, the treatment so far has been in mice. Its gene therapy which will hopefully fix the genetic problem. But it goes to the underserved population of people with these orphan diseases where they cant get enough traction in Traditional Medicine to get the funding, the tests. And sometimes the government funding to look at new cures. Do you think this idea of going online to raise that kind of money is going to take hold . Is this something were going to see more of in the future . I think youll see bits and pieces. I dont think its the wave of the future. What we really need to do is refund the National Cancer institute and major grantmaking bodies in this country which weve really turned our back on investigative drugs in this country to the point its a fraction of what we spend on other things in this country. We need to realign how we spend our government funding. Hurdles here still have to get money, still have to see if the drug works. So theres still some mountains to climb here, im afraid. On monday we caught up with the young girls who played the star in 3 men and a baby. This morning another classic baby boom starring diane keaton and little elizabeth. I love the movie and i always thought the little baby elizabeth was the cutest baby ever in any movie, so its very nice to meet you. Thank you so much. What was it like growing up with this . I assume you dont remember anything from the shooting, so when did you actually become aware we were in a big movie in the 80s . I think in Elementary School when our teachers kind of knew that we were in it and our friends when we started to get a little bit older. It was more like their parents kind of telling them youre going to the baby boom house, that kind of thing. Our friends never really saw the movie when we were in Elementary School. But usually the parents. Jim and diane, it must be fun for you to have this time capsule of them at this moment in life . How did you get your girls in this big hollywood movie . Well, my sister laura called me and said theres going to be an open decision. So we went into the city and it was an open call. We went in and we were the first ones brought into the office. Theres a story about that, right . How did you become the first to audition . Well, it was a sunday. There must have been 60 or 70 sets of twins and triplets. And there was a makeshift toy area where one of the casting agents who was playing with christina and the ball rolled right to the adjacent room where the producers and directors were. And sure enough, they said show them in. And they were the first to be auditioned. First to be auditioned. Then chosen. This was not a short shoot. Five months. Yeah. Five months. And i hear you had to give the producers a little baby 101 lesson. Yes. In the beginning they thought they could just have a baby happy on demand. And, you know, they found out really quickly that they had to work around their schedule. And they were very good about that. So, you know, it all worked out. Within three weeks it was smooth sailing. It was very good. Michelle and christina, youre both teachers just like your parents. Acting bug did not bite you. But i heard you did run into diane keaton years later. What happened . My dad actually heard she was doing a book signing in southampton. And we live out in the hamptons we were in college. We were in college, yeah. We didnt tell her we were coming. We had a picture of us with her and we put it down in front of her to sign it and she said we were just thinking about these girls the other day. So then she looked to sign it and she looks at us and she looks at the picture and she was like no. We were just smiling, you know. She kind of put it together. And so when she realized, she got up and gave us a big hug. It was exciting. Its just a great memory. The little time capsule of this moment in your life is great. Thanks for being here. A North Carolina mom is protesting her Daughters School dress code by wearing the very same outfit that her daughter wore that the school ended up sending her home for wearing. This is the last day of school. She wore the daughter wore this outfit right here. And she was sent home. She was told it was inappropriate. It was too short. The mom decided to wear it at her daughters graduation ceremony. And the daughter, by the way, is violet burkhart. Violet said teachers told her it was a half inch too short. She was sent home to change. The school spokeswoman told us they dont discuss specific student records but forwarded a copy of the dress code. Skirts and dresses that are shorter than midthigh are considered inappropriate. Violet says she did change into jeans and returned back to school, but she was told that she would face a detention. So she ended up leaving campus. The question is, if youre the mom and doing that, is that like silent protest for your daughter . Not so silent. Youre making a big statement. We were also talking about whether the dress is too short. I know they have rules in place. But i think that a lot of these schools obsess over girls attire a lot more than boys from what you wear to the prom. I thought the length was fine. It seems to me looking at it the Fashion Police say this is too short. They ask why dont we wear short sleeves all the time. I thought if anything they might Say Something about the top. But thats not the issue. Its the length. And its like a normal length skirt. Maybe im too no. Looking at it, it seems fine. What do they do take a ruler and measure and say its two inches above the knee . The finger thing. They put it above your knee. Somebodys going around with two fingers which is another issue altogether. So many other things to worry about. These kids need to learn. I dont know. It seems like a lot of, you know, a lot of attention. I think its a lot of obsession over what girls wear. Although i do agree in a learning environment. Should dress appropriately. And i dont think you want to be a distraction to your other classmates. But its not 1950. Not that theres anything wrong with this. The modern style of dress. You go to forever 21, we try to strike a balance with allowing mya to have fashion independence. But we had an epic swim suit battle with mya whos 14, but she is shes small but curvaceous. And shes a developing young girl. She wanted to get a swim suit at victorias secret. I said thats just not going to happen. And we went over pictures, i kept emailing and sending her pictures of tankinis. Shed say i dont want that. Im not her mom but im like her mother. We got on the phone her mother and myself and we conspired getting her a swim suit she likes. But its tough when youre a teenager and balancing. The shorts are getting shorter and the shirts are getting much more revealing. Absolutely. Its hard as a parent to watch that. As a parent of young boys too. I know thats going to be a hard thing when they get hormonal. I dont want to go through that. Ive never been so stressed in my life when buying a swim suit with 14yearold young mya. Why do you think it struck such a cord . I think its a lot to do like for example with this lovely group of girls here. Its all about friendship and girl power. You know, yes its a crime drama, but we also see it is a background of all these characters. I mean, we have amazing actors. This season, season five isnt just about jane anymore. Weve got Third Generation bridges. This is just a talented cast. And this season we really do sort of explore their backgrounds and their stories and things like that. Yes, obviously, jane is pregnant. I guess cats out of the bag on that one. And im the worst. I never like to tell anything. Do interviews, can you tell us whats coming up . Smoke and flames sent a couple running out of a burning town house overnight in san jose. Firefighters say a husband and wife inhaled a lot of smoke during their escape from their twostory home on athena drive. Its about a block away near piedmont park. The couple should be fine. It took firefighters about an hour to control those flames. It started on the second floor and the cause is under investigation. A committee will decide this morning whether a law named after a bay area girl will move forward. Audreys law is aimed at cracking down on juvenile sexual assaults. Its named after 15yearold audrie pott, who went to saratoga high. Prosecutors say she was sexually assaulted at a house party two years ago and photographed while unconscious. After those pictures were circulated online, pott took her own life. Audries law would require mandatory minimum twoyear sentence for those found guilty in cases like potts. Its a thickener. It takes some things that are not thick and sometimes can create the illusion of this. Like a corn starch . Like a corn starch. It can thicken things. It can be mostly on vegetables and not on fruits. Something people add to it to make it tastier. Some margarine . No. Its something that is something you pour. You pour it on. I dont know. Hollandaise sauce. If you want a sandwich but youre on a diet, you use this kind of a product to make the illusion of a big sandwich. I think ill have to tell you. It is bread and some glutenfree products, sometimes in regular pasta and salad dressings. That was the clue. You dont put salad dressings on vegetables. I was thinking of broccoli sitting there 9 that was confusing. Tell us, though, is it okay for you . These are perfectly safe. Sometimes you look at these things and say i cant pronounce them, but they are fdaapproved. These are tested and theyre food quality things. Sometimes if you see ingredients like this in cosmetics or toothpaste, these are very different. Next, carrageenan. It comes from bless you. This is something again that counts as a thickener, especially in lowerfat dairy. To give it sort of thickness. What product do you think its in . Multiple choice . It could be lowfat cheese. Something that is frozen that you eat in the summertime. Yogurt. Frozen yogurt. Or fatfree ice cream. It can be in soups, gummy rollups, anything to give a little bit of thickness. Its a white powder. Its not bad for you. Its not bad for you. Next we come to something called soy lecithin. Its an emulsifier. It blends things. Its a little bit of oil and a little bit of water.
