Police now have a clear idea of the chronology of that rampage, but given Current Mental Health laws, they dont know how to hold off the next Elliot Rodger. You denied me a happy life, and in turn, i will deny all of you life. Reporter alleged gunman Elliot Rodgers own words are painting a clearer picture of the possible motives behind the murderous rampage through a seaside Southern California town. Along with a final 11th hour video that he posted to youtube, he reportedly circulated a 140page manifesto titled my twisted world just before the massacre. In it, the writer says hed been thinking about his killing spree and planning it since he was 17, five years ago. Frustrated by feeling repeatedly rejected by women, he called his plan the day of retribution and wrote, i cannot kill every single female on earth, but i can deliver a devastating blow that will shake all of them to the core of their wicked hearts. According to reports, rodgers divorced parents, his mother chin and his father, the film director, peter rodger were among the recipients of that chilling diatribe. After receiving the email friday night, they alerted authorities and frantically tried to find their son, but it was too late. I need three ambulances here. Shots fired, shots fired. Reporter last month, they had alerted elliots therapist about his increasingly maudlin, though not yet threatening, videos and blogs. Police were asked to check on him. They did. But he wrote in that manifesto that he tactfully told them it was all a misunderstanding, that it was fine, and that the police never came back. That happens, say Mental Health advocates, when police see no record or indication of immediate danger in subjects like rodger. They can pull it together for long enough to do the interview. How long was the interview . Five, ten minutes . Reporter the result, a month ago he did not meet the criteria for an involuntary Mental Health hold. Reporter now, seven young victims, including the one police now call a madman, are dead. The chancellor here at Uc Santa Barbara has declared tomorrow a day of mourning and reflection, and the largest of several memorials is scheduled for 4 00 in the afternoon here at Harder Stadium on campus. Paul rieckhoff, an iraq war veteran, is the founder and executive director of iraq and afghanistan veterans of america. Paul, good to see you. Good to see you, willie. So the president goes to afghanistan yesterday, reaffirms that this war by and large will be over by the end of the year with some residual forces remaining. 13 years on now, paul, some 2,300 americans dead, did the United States achieve its objectives as they were set out in 2001 in afghanistan . I dont think we know yet. Well find out over the next few years and next few decades. I think for our troops and veterans, theyve done everything theyve been asked to do. Theyve stepped up and theyve sacrificed and especially on memorial day its about reflecting on those weve lost and spending time with our families and trying to reconnect after very long years of war. The president did talk obliquely about the Veterans Affairs scandal. He said its a sacred obligation that we take care of our veterans when they come home. That hasnt been going on lately at the department of Veterans Affairs. How frustrated are you and your constituency, not just with the department, but with the president of the United States . Extremely frustrated. Our members are outraged nationwide. Theyve lost faith in the v. A. , in secretary shinseki and in the president. Hes got to work hard to regain that trust and faith for the millions of veterans who depend on the v. A. This is crossing geography and partisan lines. Its outrage ive never seen before. The president took too long to get to this. The secretary took too long to address it and now theyve really got to make up ground to regain that trust. Youve stopped short so far of calling for the resignation of secretary shinseki. So lets be constructive about this. You get rid of the guy at the top, thats one thing. But theres a massive problem underlying that. What are some things we can do right now to improve the v. A. . Its a massive bureaucracy thats been broken for decades. Shinsekis at the top of it. We also need massive reform. Congress just passed a v. A. Accountability act. We need the senate to pass that through as well. We need better oversight from congress. Theyve also been asleep at the switch here. We need all americans to step up. They can support communitybased nonprofits and all the other local veterans groups that have to fill that void when v. A. Cant be there. As you pointed out many times, were just at the beginning of this problem. Weve got a lot more veterans about to come into the system. It has to be fixed now. Thats right. Almost 2. 8 million men and women have served overseas since 9 11, and on this day especially, on memorial day, we want to honor the folks weve lost. Put the politics aside. Were asking everyone around the country at 12 01 to go silent. Thats the hash tag were using. If you want to remember somebody of any generation thats been lost, remember them today at 12 01. Emergency crews this morning are looking for three people missing after a massive mudslide during the night in colorado. It happened in a remote area near collbran about 40 miles from Grand Junction and west of denver. The Mesa County Sheriffs Department says the slide is about four miles long, two miles wide, and 250 feet deep. Today pope francis is wrapping up his emotional visit to the holy land. Dylan is in here for al this morning. Some serious concerns for beach goers in florida. Yes. Dangerous rip currents. Dozens of people had to be rescued on sunday. Today red flag warnings are in effect once again. It will take you away if youre not paying attention, and then youll look up and have to work your way back in. Reporter David Simmons was among the beach goers battling against rough waters in Central Florida sunday when 100 people had to be rescued from rip currents. It dragged us out a couple of times, but the lifeguards have been very diligent. Theyve been out with the flags and warning people to come back in. Reporter rip currents are powerful narrow channels of fastmoving water caused by Shifting Sands that can move at speeds of up to eight feet per second, faster than an olympic swimmer. Local Officials Say on an average day they only rescue about a dozen swimmers. We had very hazardous rip Current Conditions today and well probably have that throughout the weekend, so we strongly urge people when they come to the beach, make sure they swim in front of an open lifeguard tower. And remember, if you are ever stuck in that rip current, swim parallel to the shoreline to get out of that current. Meanwhile, on this memorial day, we are looking at some areas of severe storms. South of amarillo, texas, moving south of austin, and dallas will see some of those stronger storms as we go into this afternoon. We are looking at scattered showers and storms up into parts of the western great lakes, stretching all the way down into texas, but in the same area, similar to where it was yesterday and the day before, this is where we could see some of your stronger storms, especially some wind gusts and that could cause some wind damage, and also the chance of perhaps up to 3 to 5 inches of rain and hail perhaps up to 2 inches in diameter. With millions heading to the beach today, it is important to remember the atlantic Hurricane Season begins on sunday, and this year, forecasters will get help from a predicting tool that might surprise you. Heres nbcs kerry sanders. Reporter this is the newest weapon in the battle to more accurately predict dangerous hurricanes, sharks. Scientists at the university of miami are putting sensors on sharks and other big game fish to transmit data, including deep water temperatures. Increasingly, scientists believe those readings could help predict when a Tropical Storm will turn into a category 5 hurricane. The National Weather service is predicting as many as 13 Tropical Storms this year. Six could become hurricanes, and two, they say, could be category 3 or higher. Their goal is to be able to sound the alarm when a big storm is coming. This brandnew storm surge simulator at the university of miami could help. It combines coastline surge and wind models. The Weather Channel got a sneak peek. Were on the cusp of really making some exciting developments. Reporter when its fully operational, it will be able to simulate a category 5 hurricane with winds in excess of 157 miles per hour. These will be the highest wind measurements that have ever been made. That will hopefully improve hurricane forecast models. Reporter and it will allow scientists to study the effects of storm surge, like the one that caused such devastation in superstorm sandy. In a hurricane, most people fear the intense winds and the swirling debris, but experts say statistically, more people die in the storm surge from drowning than for any other reason. For the first time this year, the National Hurricane center will share storm surge prediction maps like this, as a hurricane approaches, to indicate where dangerous flooding is most likely to occur. In the manifesto, rodger talked about the rejection he felt from women being part of the motivation for the spree. This yesallwomen got about a million tweets where women started to talk about the issues. If you listen, most women will tell you that theyve been harassed at some point in their lives and thats unacceptable. It happened last night as the victims drove their cars along the popular roadway and then fired shots at the suspects car right near the shopping center. Suspect got out of his car and drove off. A woman driver and a man in the passenger seat just left a Gladys Knight concert at the Concord Pavilion. Wasnt clear if the suspect and victims had any kind of altercation before that shooting. Tomorrow, classes will be cancelled and there will be a Memorial Service as the school holds a day of mourning and reflection. On a College Campus where questions typically come with solutions, this tragedy has left so many still searching for answers, so they gathered for an evening mass in honor of the victims. When i look at the pictures tonight of katie and veronika and chris and even elliot, i see sons and daughters and i ask that question, too, why did that happen . Reporter three of the victims were stabbed to death inside Elliot Rodgers apartment. Theyre identified as george chen, who was 19 years old, and cheng yuan hong and weihan wang, both 20. Nbc news spoke with their neighbor, who asked not to be identified. I want the parents to know their kids didnt do anything wrong. That their kids did not deserve this at all. Reporter also among the victims, 20yearold christopher michaelmartinez, who was shot at the deli mart. He wanted to follow in his parents footsteps and become a lawyer. After the shooting, his father delivered an emotional statement, bringing up the issue of gun control. When will enough people say, stop this madness, we dont have to live like this too many have died we should say to ourselves, not one more reporter the final two victims, Veronika Weiss and katie cooper, were shot and killed near a sorority house. Veronika is remembered as a foursport athlete who excelled at math. Katie was the gentle soul who loved to dance. That smile, you know . Thats what im going to miss. Thats smile that lit up the room. It lit you up. You just felt, you know, everything was pretty good right now. Reporter in addition to those who were killed, 13 other victims were injured. On this memorial day day, we are going to see pretty warm temperatures. A lot of people outside for all the barbecues and whatnot. We are looking at an area of High Pressure sitting out over the atlantic and its these southerly winds that will continue to keep temperatures above average. So its actually going to be the warmest day of the Holiday Weekend in the northeast with the temperatures running about ten to almost 15 degrees above average. Chicago should be up to 87 degrees today. And as for water temperatures, theyre a little bit colder. 57 off the coast of coney island there. You can see as you head down into myrtle beach and parts of the carolinas, temperatures are running in the low to mid 70s, so a little more bearable to go in the water out that way. We do have to keep an eye out for parts of texas where we could see a chance of hail. Up to two inches in diameter. Also damaging wind gusts. As much as three to five inches of rain. The alleged gunman is 22yearold Elliot Rodger, the son of a hollywood director. His spree left six innocent people dead, and ended with his own death. Elliots own words paint a clear picture of his motives. This is a clip from a video he posted on youtube. Hi. Elliot rodger here. Well, this is my last video. It all has to come to this. Tomorrow is the day of retribution. The day in which i will have my revenge against humanity. Against all of you. Horrible. He also reportedly circulated a 141page manifesto, my twisted world, just before the massacre saying he had been planning the killing since he was 17 years old. Says he was frustrated by feeling repeatedly rejected by women. He called his plan the day of retribution, as you heard there. You can read through the manifesto, and we wont get into any or more of it. Richard martinez is the father of one of the victims. 20yearold Christopher Martinez who was shot inside a Convenience Store going about his business. His father spoke with reporters this weekend. He was the most warm, loving, kindhearted kid you could ask for. When will this insanity stop . When will enough people say stop this madness, we dont have to live like this too many have died we should say to ourselves, not one more. Mr. Martinez talking about the proliferation of guns in this country there. You saw the combination of anger and sadness. According to reports, Elliot Rodger emailed his divorced parents a copy of the manifesto. After they received it friday night, the parents alerting authorities and frantically got in their cars and drove to try to find their son. Last month, they had alerted elliots therapist about concerns. Police were asked to check on him and they did before clearing him. This is just terrible. Its horrific. And i think important to, again, remember the victims here. George chen, katie cooper, cheng yuan how long, christopher michaelmartinez, weihan wang, and Veronika Weiss. I mean, those are the names we should be talking about this morning. Absolutely. Just such innocents lost in such an unspeakable act, once again. And yet again, the country at a crossroads about what to do. Whether its looking at whats called common sense gun laws, what to do about Mental Health issues. Whatever side of the argument you fall on, thats fine, but we cannot ignore that there must be a conversation and one that results in something that we have to agree on as a country. What is that solution . I dont know. But there has to be one. This is unbelievable. You hear that fathers pain. It has to take your breath away. Yeah. As weve learned, its very difficult. After newtown if newtown didnt change everything, my gosh. But there are a lot of conversations that should be had. And again, were really thinking about the victims and their families. That entire community, our thoughts are with them. Im going to take us down a different road to talk about something thats caught our eye this morning. So, do you read reviews, like if you go to a hotel or a restaurant . All the time. Do you read the reviews . Yeah. If i buy something, im checking out the reviews. Checking out if its five star or two star. This is interesting, because a hotel has taken great offense to a negative online review. An oregon hotel is suing a trip adviser user who claims were false and defamatory according to the hotel. Pretty harsh criticism. The guest is only known as 12kelly, reportedly wrote that the breakfast in the rooms were nasty and that the staff were, wait for it, either high or drunk. This was a part of the review. Thats bad . Well, depends where you are. Some of us like that stuff. Also, accused the front desk person of making inappropriate phone calls. The april 23rd review of the ashley inn in lincoln city, oregon, has been taken down, but the inn wants now 74,000 in damages from the as yet unknown customer. The suit says the online statements were deliberately malicious and willfully with the specific intent to cause damage to character and reputation of the law. So, the question is, a, should you be able to post an anonymous review . Should you have to say exactly who you are and be accountable for it . They said that people were high or drunk. How do you know that . And it goes on, by the way. Its terrible. Theres some more defamatory statements that were made. High or drunk at work. I just might be happy. And the problem is the truth is you do read those. Whether its yelp i dont know whether or not its going to bear out for a lawsuit. I dont know that thats going to actually come to fruition. I read those reviews. It does ruin a reputation of a business. Which if its a Small Business like this lodge is, i mean, it could completely affect other bookings. When the review is bad, i believe it. When the review is good, i think they called all their friends. They made up a screen name. I love this place. Im a little skeptical. Even when its a critic in a paper because i know these people sometimes have relationships and they are a little lenient, and ive gone into places that had five star and youre like really . This is terrible. Who did you pay off for this review. But it is interesting, the anonymity of it, from the reviews to even like twitter, facebook, should you have to own who you are and thus own your words. Its pretty tricky. Im all for, you know, making sure that people get what they paid for. And i think in this case, being an honest reviewer, people appreciate that. As a coupnsumer, i appreciate getting ten bonus points for that. Here is a little bit of a fire storm that has ignited once again in the mom wars. Emma thompson said on sunday, you cant be a great mum and keep working all the time. The actress has urged moms to, as she said, take a year off to spend more time with their children, and she wanted to spend more time with her own family, so she took a year off. She says it was a birthday present to herself. She said she highly recommends others to do the same. She did say if they can afford it. She can afford it. Shes worth over 50 million. She has two kids now. Teenagers, a 14yearold daughter and a 26yearold son. Latest, though, actress to sort of dive into those troubled waters. As you may recall in march, Gwyneth Paltrow sparked anger when she was shooting a movie, she said on a set that it was a difficult thing to do, while parents who had regular jobs were able to be with their kids in the mornings and evenings. Last week, though, on the other side of this, angelina jolie, mom of 6 weighed in. She said women in her position shouldnt be complaining. She says she realizes she has much more support and the financial means than most women. So, you know, look, working moms, its a tough thing. Its a hard thing to balance. Theres no such thing as balance. Anybody who tries to sell you that bill of goods. But you do what you can with it. And most people cant afford to take a year off. Its a luxury. I mean, some places in britain, you know, theyre given paid Maternity Leave for a long time. But not here in this country. It speaks to the whole this mommy wars. Im not a mom yet, but i was saying to our producers, you have at home moms versus working moms. People who breastfeed and those who dont breastfeed. I was atten eve an event and thn said to me, dont wait too long. You need to have a baby. Are you going to have a baby. Im like, wow, when did that become appropriate for you to ask me . You dont know if i have something genetic that im dealing with. You dont know. And this woman flatout said. Dont do what i do. Go ahead and have it now. Im like, okay, creepy, back off. Its this larger thing about judgment. And if you go on some of the blogs, especially now, you see some tough language and tough criticism. Its one thing to say heres what worked for me, if the person asks you, by the way. Yes. But to volunteer that kind of information. Its tricky. Theres a lot of preachiness out there. He loved to serve our country. My brother was u. S. Army specialist christopher nyburger. He just really felt a call to serve. My husband got deployed august 22nd, 2006. Chris deployed to iraq in august of 2006. While they were out on patrol, an improvised explosive device was detonated and he was killed instantly. Three days after his 22nd birthday. My husband was flying back from his mission. His helicopter got shot down. Theres just no survivors. He was 44 years old. He got killed 11 days before his birthday. It was hard. Because he told us he was supposed to be in the safe zone. My husband is so close to my children. And hes not really coming back. I didnt really have much of a role model at that point because my dad had been my role model my entire life. And basically, my entire life changed. I was about 5 or 6 when my dad passed away. I remember, like, playing with him. Having so much fun with him. I always thought of myself as a strong person. And i didnt think i would need any help. And then i decided i needed to call taps and try to get some extra support. Taps helped us a lot through our grieving process. According to the Contra Costa Times it happened last night as the victims drove their cars along the popular roadway, then the suspect fired a shot at the victims car at an intersection on oak grove road near the shopping center. The suspect got out of his car and continued to shoot before he drove off. Police say the two victims a woman driver and a man in the passenger seat had just left a Gladys Knight concert at Concord Pavilion. Not clear if the suspect and victims had any sort of altercation before the shooting. Condition ks and names of the victim have not been released. If you have to go that way, caltrans says southbound traffic will detour to 101. Traffic traveling on mariposa and 18th street can get on to 280 at pennsylvania avenue. And northbound 280 is open. Im going to move my way back over here. Lets start rocking and rolling. First of all, weve got burgers. Heres a key point. Make sure you roll your burgers earlier so that theyre nice and firm. What do you mean earlier . The day before . An hour before so theyre nice and firm. So the fat settles. So lets get those seasoned. A big patty. Absolutely. A little oil. We like canola. Why oil . A hot grill and a cold burger so you want to make sure the oil hits it first so it doesnt stick. And hot side. You like to keep the three areas of the grill, right . One hot side. One medium hot. One low. So theres a nice sear. We let it cook and we let it settle. You want to do hot dogs . Where do you put the hot dog . Lets put these right next to the meat. Light them up, tamron. Let it slide down. A lot going on. Weve got to move quickly. See you later. So weve got chicken. Lets make a rub. So, garlic powder. Weve got some smoked paprika. Onion powder. Brown sugar. Get in that brown sugar. Chili powder. Kosher salt. Clean hands, guys, i promise. And chili peppers. So get that all in. And what were going to do is use that to season the chicken breast. When do i get my burger . I dont pat it, right . No. It squeezes the juices out. Let it get a nice sear. Get the grill marks. You can take a peek at it if you want. Let me show you. Okay. Apparently im not doing it right. I was going to help her flip that burger. So you lev it. So now its okay, but you want to let it go a little longer. Oh, i messed up. No, you didnt mess up, you just move quick. Some people look for the juice on the top of the burger to flip it . Yes. Do you have any telltale signs . Once you start to see the burger create some texture around the edges, thats when you know you can turn it. Its going from rare to a medium around the edges. Now, move your hot dog. To another side . Now what do we do . Lets get the chicken on the grill. Lemon juice or anything . We mix the lemon juice with a little bit of the rub so we can baste it. Pop those on there, natalie. What youre going to do is create your own space for the chicken. Clear my space. Lets get to business here. Soy sauce. Some orange juice. Ill watch your chicken. Some rice wine vinegar. A little canola oil. I like that smell. A little honey. That looks amazing. Some sweetness. A little more sweetness. And some brown sugar. Oh, my gosh, honey and brown sugar. And some garlic. I dont want to get your suit. Thats all right. Let me get in there. At the same time, im going to go ahead and do a little oil on my veggies. Very simple. And once you get the marinade going, lets hit the skirt steak and the salmon. Okay. How long should you let the marinade sit on the steak and salmon . You can do it the day before if you have time, but you can do it right away like were doing now, its also okay. Do you want the onions on there too . Everything on it. How we doing on the grill . Were doing good. When do i flip the chicken . Well let it sit for a while. We have our own tongs for the chicken. You dont want to mix your tongs, right . Its okay. Well let it settle. Were not nervous. Were comfortable. Nice. Will you grab a plate for the hot dogs . Theyre not all the way down, so well let them cook a little bit because theyre on the low side. I thought hot dogs were already done. You can get them 100 cooked, but these, i dont know that they are. Lets bring the skirt steak over. But even if you dont get it all done where do we put these . Lets put those right there. Really using all that space. How many people are we having over . A lot of people. Thats fantastic. So heres the thing. Keep in mind, weve got that really hot side. The medium hot side. The low side. And now we want to make sure we sear everything first and then let it cook. Move it over. When you talk about the salmon and the shrimp, whats the key to getting it on the grill without having it fall apart . The most important thing is put that salmon and the shrimp on the hot side. Let it sear. Leave it. Get those grill marks and then we want to flip it over. Because fish does break up on the grill sometimes. If you notice how weve got this really small pieces, when you go to the butcher, make sure they cut them small. Theyre easier to handle. When youve got really long pieces, its guaranteed to break. The victims from san jose were 20yearold weihan wang of free mont, 19yearold george chen and 20yearold cheng yuan hong, both from san jose. All were students at the university there. The suspect Elliot Rodger killed the three men in his own apartment before then gunning down three others. 13 others hurt because of the rampage including nick pasachouk from alamo. He graduated from San Ramon Valley high school in danville but was in Santa Barbara at the time visiting a friend when the suspect hit him with his car. The impact broke both of his legs. This morning his familys in Santa Barbara with him. They say theyve seen an outpouring of support from the community. Well, lets check your memorial day weather this morning with anthony. I got there as fast as i could. I was there within seven minutes of my symptom onset. Had this happened to me some years ago i would probably be in a longterm care facility. I probably wouldnt be able to eat. And i probably wouldnt be able to communicate. With my family. That is what amazing. Terry is here with dr. Lori mosca the director of preventive cardiology at u. S. Presbyterian hospital who authored a series on stroke awareness. You son took over the wheel and got you there . He drove me straight back to a primary stroke care center. What a hero he is. Whats important is you actually work in a stroke care facility. So you knew all of the symptoms, and exactly what you should be doing. I did. Im a coordinator for a primary Stroke Care Program in independence, missouri. Thats unbelievable. Wouldnt you be one of the least likely woman to have a stroke though, on the surface, completely healthy. Completely. She doesnt have risk factors for stroke except we know there are certain conditions in the heart and irregular rhythm that many people arent aware of that can lied to a stroke so i think that was the situation here. But she looked so healthy, and its amazing. Tell us about the things that people should know. The symptoms, describe them a little bit more and what someone should do.
