Here is what we know so far. This is a Community Near the u. C. Santa barbara campus where many students live. Around 9 30 pacific, gunfire rang out from a suspected attacker driving a black bmw. According to police, it is unclear who the target or targets were. The shooter was near the college. They say no shots were ever fired on campus. At least seven were killed. The gunman is among them. The suspect had exchanged gunfire with sheriff dep it is but unclear if he was shot by dep it is or the wounds were selfinflicted. Another seven people were injured. One is undergoing surgery for lifethreatening injuries. The local sheriff spoke at a News Conference a short time ago. This is still a very active investigation, as you can imagine, a very chaotic series of crime scenes. Although we have preliminarily identified the suspect, we are not releasing the suspects name until a positive identification can be made. Now, residents were urged to stay inside while police were on the scene. We will continue to follow this story and bring you any new developments. Lester . Kristen, thanks. The storms passed quickly. No reports of major damage. Here in new york, thunderstorms led to flooding that snarled the memorial day getaway on the roads and led to flight delays. An area that is very much droughtstricken. We do need the rain there. We could see snow in some of the higher elevations, specially above 10,000 feet. Scattered showers and storms through the middle of the country. It is going to be unsettled today. Tomorrow, you can see that slight risk of storms. We are still going to be fairly stormy down that way with scattered showers and storms from north dakota to southern texas. The northeast does start to dry out. On memorial day itself, through the tristate area into the midatlantic, we are going to see our nicest weather, still with the strong risk of storms in texas and the midwest will start to heat up again. Now, kerry has rejected two earlier requests to testify. The state Department Said in both cases he had other responsibilities. Democrats have accused republicans of playing politics with this issue. It is a hotbutton issue. No doubt republicans see benghazi as a politically viable issue for them in 2014. Recently, a jetblue plane aborted a landing and got way to close to another plane at jfk here in new york. Now, we are hearing about an even closer call in the skies over houston. May 9th, in houston, united flight 601 was departing for vancouver on runway 9 as united flight 437 was leaving for mexico city on runway 15. The controller made a serious mistake. Turn right, right turn, heading p40. Reporter instead of telling the vancouver flight to turn left. He told the flight to turn right into the path of the other plane. The controller then quickly realized his mistake. United 601, stop your turn, stop your turn for united 601. Reporter they came within 400 feet vertically. 8 of a foot laterally. It blew right over the top of a departing regional flight cleared for takeoff on an intersecting runway. They missed each other by just 400 feet. The faa has since ordered changes to the runway layout. The air Traffic Controller is talking nonstop. They are having to do a core rio graphed dance with all these airplanes coming and going. Reporter april 25th, 200 miles northeast of kona, hawaii, a united 757 and us airways 757 on a collision course flying at 37,000 feet when their Collision Avoidance alarms went off. The unite td plane dove 600 feet to avoid a headon. Controllers mistakenly put both planes at the same altitude. They were looking at the role that veterans made. The Santa Barbara county sheriff is calling this a premedicated mass murder but a suspect who was severely mentally seven injured, one with life threatening injuries. The first 911 call came in at 9 27 in isla vista. Thats about 90 miles up the coast from l. A. The callers, the first describe a shooting spree by shn driving around in a bmwsuv. Police went to the first location and found several victims down. Then they encountered the alleged shooter and got into an exchange that left him dead of a gun shshot wound to his head. Not known if it was selfinflicted. Police investigate a Youtube Video posted before the shooting spree described as a manifesto and a specific warning about what was about to happen. Sheriff brown said the probe of that among others is ongoing. This is still a very active investigation and as you can imagine, a very chaotic series of crime scenes. Although we have preliminarily identified the suspect we are not releasing the suspects name until a positive identification can be made. For the video weve seen it, its chilling to watch. Were trying to confirm the providence of it. For the weapon used in this shooting spree police say it was a semiautomatic handgun that was recovered at the scene where the suspect was killed.
