And how about that news from David Letterman . Big surprise. It really is. Hes retiring, not immediately, this takes place some time in 2015. Some time over the next year. No date has been given. But this is a big deal in the world of late night television. It is. Hes given us a year to emotionally prepare. Have you heard about that painter from texas . George w. Bush with his first art exhibit. These are incredible portraits hes painted of the World Leaders he encountered along the way. Fascinating discussion with his daughter and the unveiling, as it were. Well look forward to that. Well get ready for our top story now, though. And it is the severe storms on the move this morning after causing damage and injuries from texas to indiana. Lets get to nbcs Kerry Sanders. We find him in memphis, tennessee, this morning. Kerry, good morning to you. Well, good morning, savannah. The worst of it rolled through here in memphis under cover of darkness in the Early Morning hours. No damage here, but other parts of country, not fortunate. Areas known as tornado alley, not so lucky. In hunt county, texas, the sheriff reports a suspected tornado targeted a mobile home, destroyed a farmhouse injuring four people and taken to the hospital. But fortunately this morning, there are no reports of any lives lost. Reporter from texas to the midwest, a miserable night as more than half dozen suspected tornadoes touch down. At the university of north texas in denton, students hunkered down in hallways. Earlier thursday, baseballsized hail and wicked winds smashed cars. Also damaged, a dormitory. Friends offered to help a class mate, but she said for her car, it was too little, too late. Amazing pictures at the Opening Night for the frisco rough riders, the Minor League Baseball team. The game was called as baseball fans ran for shelter. Warning signs in st. Louis, lightning at the arch. An ef1 tornado with winds of 110 Miles Per Hour damaged 100 homes and left thousands without power. We heard our daughter screaming, get in the basement we jumped out of bed and as we were getting out of the room, the front windows, the glass started flying. Thats a beast. Thats a big one. In franklin county, missouri, anxious moments as a flash flood trapped one man in his truck. Rescue teams eventually pulled him to safety. In nearby aston, 16yearold brittany creach was holed up in a safe room for hours. She tweeted, got to go to the basement because theres a tornado, but first, let me take a selfie. She talked to nbc news while waiting for the all clear. Its definitely nervewracking. 30 miles away ross buch rode out the threat alone in his bathroom. A big storm like this moves through. Reporter missouri governor jay nixons twitter page, an impressive picture snapped in osage county. An ominous warning of the looming threat. Amazes amazingly, that picture was taken with the car turned around, but safely the car turned around and made it out. Savannah . Kerry sanders, thank you. Lets check in dylan dreyer. Shes in for al this morning. So how long are we in for this rough weather . We are going to see another round of severe storms later on today. But its not going to be as severe as it was yesterday. These storms are sliding east, but take a look at the radar. Yesterday, here we start at 1 00 p. M. And watch how these storms sorry about that. Watch at how these storms did fire up. And they started to spread to the east and then they produced a lot of hail and a lot of wind damage. We have reports of eight tornadoes. We have not yet confirmed all eight of those. But wind report, 92 of those and hail reports, 159 with that baseballsized hail in parts of texas. You can see the red here right through birmingham, alabama. That is still our tornado watch until later on this morning. And the yellow boxes indicate where we have a severe thunderstorm watch. So this line of thunderstorms can still produce that Severe Weather today. With the hail and damaging wind gusts which certainly causes a lot of damage. As for tornadoes, a fewer tornadoes today, but we are looking at the possibility from mississippi up into southern ohio. It is certainly going to be a little bit active again today, but it shouldnt be as bad as it was yesterday. Thank you. Were learning more this morning about the gunman behind wednesdays deadly shooting at ft. Hood in texas. Investigators now focusing on several theories to explain the motive behind specialist ivan lopez rampage. Well hear from friends in his hometown in a moment, but first, nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is at ft. Hood with the latest. Gabe, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. Military Officials Say the gunman was treated for depression and anxiety and sleep deprivation. And while investigators arent ruling anything out, an argument on base might have led him to snap. Reporter this morning in the search for what set off Army Specialist ivan lopez, military officials are zeroing in on something that may have happened right before the shooting spree. There may have been a verbal altercation with another soldier or soldiers, and theres a strong possibility that immediately preceded the shooting. And authorities confirm to nbc news, theyre looking into whether lopez was upset he didnt get more time off to attend his mothers funeral last year. He was upset, but didnt show he was upset. Reporter neighbor rayshawn turner says lopez brought up the issue of delayed military leave earlier this week. He was like, yeah, i have ptsd. And i said what happens when you have ptsd. He said sometimes i shut down. Reporter lopez joined the Army National guard in puerto rico when he was 19, later signed up for the Army Infantry in ft. Bliss, texas. He was deployed to egypt and iraq as a truck driver. But military Officials Say he was never in combat. As his family left to grieve privately, authorities confirmed lopez bought his handgun legally at the same shop where Army Major Nidal Hasan bought his weapon before the bases 2009 shooting rampage. Once again, flags flying at half staff in kileen. Among the injured, keisha fountain and patrick miller. Among those killed 37yearold Sergeant Timothy owens, a counselor and tenyear army veteran. I cant believe this has happened. I just cant. What am i to do . Reporter three of the wounded have been listed in critical condition. Today, they have been upgraded to serious condition. Meanwhile, a Memorial Service is being planned here for next week. Matt . All right, gabe. Thank you very much. Specialist lopez grew up in a small town in puerto rico. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk is there this morning. Stephanie, good morning to you. Reporter good morning much, matt. This is a quiet town on the south coast of puerto rico. The reaction to the news out of ft. Hood here was disbelief. Its a tightknit community. Almost everyone we met knows lopez family. Very prominent in the community. His mom was the head nurse at the local hospital and his father played the guitar every sunday in church. Guayanilla, puerto rico is where ivan lopez grew up, a town of 21,000 where residents say as many as half of the High School Graduates will enlist in the u. S. Military. His friends describe him as humble and fun loving. A very good person. Laughing all the time. This is a guy that you knew really well, you guys grew up the same exact way. And never thought Something Like this could happen. Alex and jose were percussionists with lopez in the High School Marching band. They say they are both in a state of shock. You know, to know your best friend is involved in Something Like that. The mayor of guayanilla was the band instructor. The former teacher worries the months in iraq may have taken a toll on his student. He must have been suffering, he says. Lopez was back in guayanilla last november when his mother died suddenly of a heart attack. Back only for 24 hours. His friends say he was frustrated he couldnt get more leave for the funeral. But didnt notice anything different about him. He had this this gift, he knew how to hide emotions. So if anything ever happened, nobody knew. He was joking, trying to make the best of the situation. Reporter the people here in this town are very proud of the men and women who join the u. S. Military. And there are a lot of them. Right now, theyre trying to reconcile the memory of a man they were very proud of with a man who could have been responsible for that deadly shooting spree. Matt and savannah. Two journalists working in afghanistan shot there today while covering the countrys nationwide elections. One of them an Associated Press photographer was killed in that shooting. Nbc chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel is in kabul with the details. Richard, good morning. Reporter good morning. This was a horrific attack. These two women journalists, both of them veteran correspondents, wellknown were traveling in a convoy with election volunteers. The convoy delivering ballots. Elections are supposed to take place here tomorrow. And this convoy was protected by Afghan Security forces and then suddenly, one of the Afghan Security forces and afghan policemen walked up to the car, where the two reporters were sitting they were in the backseat and began shouting allah and firing into the car. The photographer, a german photographer, anja niedringhaus, 48 years old, was killed instantly. And kathy gennan a canadian one of the bestknown correspondents who has covered this country for decade was injured. We are told she is in stable condition. Natalie . Horrific news. And highlighting the dangers ahead with the elections there. Richard engel in kabul, thank you. The desperate hunt is still on for the black box in Malaysia Airlines flight 370. The clock is ticking because the batteries will soon run out. Nbcs katy tur is in kuala lumpur. Katy, good morning. Reporter hey there, natalie. Heres where things stand right now. It is friday night in kuala lumpur. And the search is ongoing. Today as theyve done every day, they slightly tweaked the search zone as theyve been doing every day. Still, generally, though, it is off the coast of perth, australia in the southern indian ocean. Today, they were able to deploy the pingers weve been talking about. The pingers able to detect the black boxes underwater. Also getting ready an unmanned submarine to scan the ocean floor. But time is really of the essence. Monday marks 30 days in. And as you know, the black boxes, the beacons, the batteries on them run out after 30 days. Which means after monday, this search could change quite a bit to more of a radar and sonar scanning of the ocean floor, which would be a massive undertaking. But natalie, it is how they found air france. All right, katy tur in kuala lumpur. Thank you, katy. Powerful aftershocks rattling nerves in chile three days after the massive earthquake on tuesday. The biggest is 6. 1 and residents there are facing water, electricity and fuel shortages following tuesdays 8. 2 quake killed six people and damaged 2,500 homes. Displaced residents are living in tents that theyve set up in parking lots and hill tops. You have to see this out of this world video literally. It was captured by a sky diver by a recent plunge in norway. Aders just pulled his chute when a meteorite screamed past him, he was incredibly lucky not to be hit by that space rock. It was in dark flight, thats when it slows down so much it no longer glows. This is the first time a meteorite was captured on camera in dark flight. That is incredible video. Kind of crazy. Yeah. You going to talk more about the tornadoes . Another round of strong storms is certainly possible today. Not as bad as yesterday, but we could see wind damage, hail and isolated tornadoes. The area in red right by the cold front through the Tennessee River valley right down into the little section of louisiana. So the gulf coast states will also be on alert for some of those storms this afternoon. Thats a look at the weather across the country. Well get your local forecast in 30 seconds. What this means now is paul and i can be married. Letterman started his late night career with an 11year run here at 30 rock. Im very excited about this new show. And its a big three or four days for nbc. Before heading a few avenues over to cbs and the ed sullivan theater where for over two decades hes been the king of the oneliner. How you doing . Fine . A suspicious fire caused about 150,000 in damage to an Administration Building at Childrens Hospital oakland, investigators say the flames appear to have started outside near the back of the converted office. This is around the corner from the hospital. No one was hurt but crews say the building is now unusable this morning. Authorities also say it is suspicious. In a few minutes another coast guard crew from the bay area will help rescue a girl on a boat. She is with her family on the boat. They set sail around the world. The sbot 900 nautical miles off the coast of mexico. The 129th rescue wing left yesterday and dropped parachuters out of aircraft. She is expected to be air lifted to a hospital today. This is what famed beale street looked like this morning. Up to eight tornadoes touched down in denton, texas. Hail was as large as softballs. 84mileanhour wind gusts in frisco, texas. At the frisco rough riders baseball game. They were in the third inning when an incredible funnel cloud came through. There were no injuries in the baseball stadium, but nearby, in hunt county, texas, the sheriff reports a tornado hit and destroyed a mobile home and flattened a farmhouse. Four people were taken to the hospital. It was a long and miserable night for a lot of people dealing with this in part because their cell phones kept going off waking them up with warnings. Savannah. All right. Kerry sanders in memphis. Thank you. Dylan, what can you tell us . We will see the threat of more hail and more damaging wind gusts and flash flooding. We have the flood threat in red. Flash flooding from Southern Illinois to southern ohio. Most of the ohio river valley is seeing some of that flash flooding. That, in and of itself will cause concerning this morning. That will produce up to 1 inch of rainfall. Yesterday, we ended up with areas in missouri, about 5 inches of rain. Today, we should see more along the lines of 1 inch or 2. It is the strong storms that could produce some of that hail and we could see isolated tornadoes, although that threat is diminished this afternoon. Lets look at the snow back through minneapolis. Parts of minnesota have picked up 10 inches of snow through the back side of the storm system. We will see snow this morning. We could end up with an additional 3 to 6 inches in we accumulated about a quarter inch of rain so far this morning with more Activity Still on the radar. You can see the bulk of the moisture pressing into the Central Valley just to the west of 5 for now. It will be past over the next hour. Focusing on this batch of moisture thats going to move into san jose as we head through about 7 54 so keep that in mind. Has he seen this portrait . I dont think he has. No telling how these people are going to react when they see their portrait. I think i told him i was painting him and he brushed it off so to speak. No art pun intended there. That was an art pun. Was he shocked . Yeah i think, he said you painted my portrait . I hope he likes it. I like it. I like it because it conveys a compassionate person and a strong person and a reliable friend. This artist says his exhibit filled with paintings, photos and momentos is about friendship as much as art. And each portrait aims to capture the unique personalities with whom he served. Putin. Tlad mir putin, yeah,oout vladimir putin, it became more tense as time went on. Vladimirs a person who in many ways views the u. S. As an enemy. And although he wouldnt say that, i felt that he viewed the world as either the u. S. Benefits and russia loses or vice versa. I tried to dispel him of that notion. You could tell from the very beginning that he was interested in power. And theres an anecdote youve written about thats symbolic about. As you know our dear dog barney had a special spot in my heart. I introduced him to putin, putin kind of dissed him. You call that a dog . A year later, your mom and i go to visit and hed say you like to meet my dog . Out bounds this huge hound. And putin says bigger stronger and faster than barney. And you kind of thought, is this symbolic. I took it in. I didnt react. Wow, anybody who thinks my dog is bigger than your dog is an interesting character. And that painting kind of reflects that. Painting is a newfound passion inspired in part by a diplomat from another era who took up the hobby when he left office. I was inspired partially by winston churchill. He wrote a great essay. I wanted to make sure that the last chapters of my life were full. And painting, it turns out, occupies not only space but opened my mind. Is this something you ever thought, you know ten years ago wouldve happened . No. No. If you would have said to me that, one, youd be working for nbc and, two, that id be having a gallery full of paintings, id said neither. I was a little reluctant to pull them out because im not a great artist i dont want people to think im a great artist. I want people to come and visit us. We view ourselves as a place where people can learn. Maybe you dont think youre a great artist but you take it seriously. I paint a lot because im at driven person. And i want to get better. Whole new world has opened up. It all started two years ago when an act. He called it communicating through his art. Sending love notes of sorts to his family. I did encourage him after he got ten ultimate and started drawing very interesting stick figure characters to communicate with you and barbara and with me when i was on the road. And you got an art instructor and got one requirement from her. She said whats your goal . And i said well theres a rembrant trapped in this body. Youre a disciplined guy, i know that. Very disciplined. And so he comes up and works every single day. Which is why hes improved and can do portraits that are so good. He did a portrait of you, though. Yeah it still needs some work. You learned something from that. Yeah dont paint your wife. So a brief glimpse into the world of the artist. His man cave was transformed into an art studio. So this is where the artist works . Most of the country this weekend will enjoy some really nice weather. Snow showers back through the rockies, little bit of rain in the Pacific Northwest and storms down in the gulf coast. Its sunday especially down across eastern texas and into southern louisiana where we could see some stronger storms otherwise its very unsettled down in the south. A rambusy crowd out there today. This morning, this is all thats left of the rain for the time being. You see a good cell on campbell. It will continue to clear out today and temperatures will be on the chilly side. 59 degrees, thats it for today in san francisco. This weekend we really start to climb. Dont forget giants home opener on tuesday in san francisco, 76 degrees. And that is your latest forecast. Facebook is a place where parents like to put pictures of their kids. We have a story of a family that did that and may have saved their daughters vision. Tamrons got the story from the orange room. Hey there, savannah. When she uploaded a photo of her 3yearold daughter riley, her friends were paying close attention. So when one of them said something might be wrong, she listened. Riley taylor loves gymnastics books and playing dressup. The active 3yearold never showed any signs that her vision was impaired. Walk on the balance beam ride her bike watch tv with her sister. Riley even does her own hair something her proud mom tara captured and shared with her friends in october. Several friends liked the photo and left comments about rileys beautiful new do. But one friend noticed something was off in the picture. A glow in the eye from a picture can mean theres something wrong with the eye. So i text tara and said hey, it could be nothing, it could be the flash, but there could be something wrong with rileys eye. Tara and her husband jason took more pictures of riley that night and discovered her glowing eye was not a onetime camera fluke. I wouldnt say we were terrified, but there was definitely concern. Because we thought worstcase scenario, what if our child has cancer. The taylors moved quickly and brought her to an ophthalmologist who performed a vision test. She said, mama i cant see it. It took my breath away. Because i said i cant believe she cant see at all out of her left eye. A retina specialist diagnosed riley. It affects 1 in 100,000 patients. Normal blood vessels are dialated. And the fluid accumulates in the back of the eye in the retina causing vision loss. The glow was a reflection of a white scar in her retina and cholesterol deposit in her eye, two telltale signs of the disease. If this had not been detected at the time it was, she probably wouldve ended up having a total retinal detachment. Its unlikely shell recover full vision in her left eye, but thanks to laser treatment and injections injections, some of her peripheral vision has been restored. Its made a huge impact. Its changed our lives, actually. Well, the taylors are fortunate they caught the disease fairly early, it could have been worse. Sometimes it can indicate something serious like an eye cancer. Guys its an incredible story. And people should Pay Attention to it. Sometimes people talk about the perils of social media. Coming up next a hockey star from sochi on his off ice miracle. She when shes born, her bowel was outside of her stomach, which means her stomach closed without her bowel getting inside of her. That meant immediate surgery and several days before mom could hold her daughter. An agonizing wait as any parent knows. It was the most wonderful feeling being able to hold her for the first time. I cant even describe how it felt. It was great. Wow. Oshies kept his emotions in check throughout the stressful ordeal, understandably missing a game the day lila was born. Otherwise, business as usual. Close friends and family knew about lilas challenge, but oshies legion of fans saw nothing out of the ordinary. Just a beaming new dad clutching a new love of his life during the time of his life. Its surreal. It was a pretty cool way to win in russia and get over here and see shes doing great and lila shows up, and she trumps everything. The couple have become fixtures in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at st. Louis Childrens Hospital keeping tabs on their baby girl who is recovering quickly, feeding as normal, her intestines working. Lila has been like a st. Louis blues hockey player shes done beautifully, just like her dad. Dad. Reporter during our visit, her smitten parents found out they could bring her home early next week, sooner than expected. Shes great. Looking at her for two hours. Reporter as the deathing dad gets ready to add feeding to faceoffs. For today, ron mott, nbc news, st. Louis. Such a nice moment. My name on the door and everything. I dont actually have that in the theater. Im going to do something about that. We pull out all the stops for you. I feel like this play pulls off something difficult, which is its incredibly sad but also very funny. Absolutely. I think thats one of the who is the playwright hes got a particular skill for an incredible dark comedy. And this is, as you say, one of the shows that will make you laugh really from your belly from the whole show but it is also a very moving story. Its a powerful night of theater, hopefully. Does more than one thing. And if nothing else we get to hear your irish accent. Absolutely. Yeah. Im very, very irish in this show. Was it hard to pull off . It took some practice and took some im okay with accents. Im lucky i dont have to do a scottish accent. But the irish, i actually, i took to quite well. And most of the cast is irish, as well. So you sort of soak it up. Its a really fun accent to work in. I feel like theres some lines that wouldnt be funny in an english accent that are inherently more funny in an irish. This got rave reviews in london. Not that you read your reviews. Not at the time. Maybe much later sometimes. But at the time youre going to have to do the show the next night anyway. So if theyre terrible i cant imagine what doing the show would be like with that in your head. Is it different to bring it to a new york audience . I think so. On the whole, new york audiences are very vocal. And were a bit more reserved and whereas, new york theyre really vocal. I love that. It was amazing the reactions we would get. Im hoping you know broadway takes to this show as well as it took to that one. Im thinking most actors i get to talk to started on the stage and went to movies. You were the opposite. You quite literally grew up in movies and then went to the stage. Why was it important to you . I think ive grown up watching a lot of theater. It was always something i was going to want to do. And i also think like i i learned a huge amount about myself as an actor from it. Ive always done one thing. To sort of take yourself out of that comfort zone and put yourself in a different environment, youre going to have to you know, learn and get better and grow in order to cope with it and survive. And i think it was a really kind of invaluable learning experience for me. I was thinking about you growing up in the harry potter movies now weve got hunger games or divergent. You flourished. An incredibly interesting career after those movies. But they can be a blessing or a curse for people. I think the perception around them is they can only be sort of a hindrance to people. But i think depending on how you use it and depending on what your own goals are for yourself. Like if you just want to coast on the fame of the franchise for the rest of your life you might well be able to do that or you might that might prove impossible. But i always wanted to do other things and i think so far, at least, potters been an amazing spring board to that. You had a fan that brushed your arm and fainted immediately. That happened. Heres what bette midler had to say about a tough gig when she opened for david fry. I was dressing in the pantry. I was dressing amidst the tomato cans. The cans of tomato. I had a mirror this big, and i was and there was a puddle of water on the floor. So the first night, i was so panic stricken because i couldnt see myself. He was on so i went into the star dressing room to check my makeup. Well, he heard about it. And when i came off, he said if i ever catch you in my dressing room looking in the mirror again, ill kill you. All right. That didnt go well. David steinberg, good morning. Good morning. I was reading, this is one of the favorite things youve done in your career. You love interviewing other funny people. I do. Its incredible. The show has a uniqueness to it because no two people are together. So bette midler surprisingly is with richard belser. Ive interviewed a lot of comedians on the show. Seems when the red light goes on, they feel they have to be on in their act be funny. In a lot of ways you want them to kind of lay the act aside. I do. I like them to not be switched on like you have to be as a comedian and see sort of that natural dna humor they have. And that seems to be working. And people who like this show love the show. First compliment i got on the show, i was on morning joe promoting it, al roker grabbed me by the lapel, i love it. Thats a ringing endorsement. You interview some older comedians and up and coming comedians. Yeah. With your perspective, have you seen comedy change over the years . Totally. Totally. When i started out, i was a comedian in my 20s. If i dated a girl and she brought me home to her mother and said hes a comedian the mother would say, oh, this is a disaster. Now, nowadays, comedians in beverly hills, you cant walk down a street a parent coming to me saying my childs a great comedian, can you put them on curb your enthusiasm. Its awkward when somebody does that. You returned to standup. I did. After 25 years away from the stage. Yeah. Was it like riding a bike . Yeah. It was like riding a bike but, you know youre a little sore afterwards. Exactly like riding a bike. Yeah. Did you miss it . Is that why you got back . I did miss it. Its the oddest profession because the only way you get better at standup, at any time in your career, even as a writer, ive done it for years and years and stopped, but you think there would be something residual. You have to go in front of an audience and fail until the work becomes right. Thats thats ridiculous but thats comedians do. You were on the tonight show with Johnny Carson more than 140 times. You were one of his favorite guests ever. We just got news yesterday that David Letterman is going to call it quits in the coming year. Yeah. Giving up his show. What was your reaction to that . I wouldnt like to meet him four months after hes been off the air. You think hes going to miss it . Hes going to miss it. Because thats all he knows how to do. Its all we know how to do and were comedians. Great thing about letterman is, you always knew when he was angry. Most hosts dont let you know that. If he was pissed at something, you saw it on his face he couldnt stand it. And that was amazing about him. And yet, his other great talent is if it was something serious happening in the country and he had to deal with it he dealt with it more intelligently than almost anyone else on television. Overnight, powerful system brought rain hail tornadoes across the central United States. More than half dozen tornadoes touched down in texas and the upper midwest. At the university of north texas in denton texas, baseballsized hail and strong winds damaged cars smashing into a dorm there on the campus. Look at that. Look at the size of those things. Opening night for the frisco rough riders Minor League Baseball team the game was called because fans had to run for shelter. In st. Louis meanwhile, an ef1 tornado with winds up to 110 miles an hour damaged 100 homes and left thousands without power. I can never believe when i see hail that size. I know. And compare it to an actual golf ball. You hear that so often. And its scary. One of the scariest stories i covered when i was a reporter in dallas and a may day festival and this huge hailstorm came in. So many people were injured. You have nowhere to go. Doesnt give you protection. Comes out of nowhere. Sudden. And its big and falling from thousands of feet. Its amazing it doesnt hurt more people. Well moving on to the big news we heard about yesterday, i think it surprised a lot of people. David letterman announcing hes going to be retiring from the late show some time later in 2015. So we get a little over a year to still enjoy him. A long goodbye. But heres how he revealed his big news. Take a look. And i phoned him just before the program and i said leslie its been great, youve been great, the network has been great, but im retiring. Really . Yep. What this means now is paul and i can be married. Thank you, thanks, everybody. Thanks, everybody. An incredibly long run there. He started his late night career here at nbc. He was here until in 1993 he then went over to cbs to start the late show. They have not announced a specific end date yet, but were going to enjoy him for the next year. Yeah. How i met your mother just ended, good timing fantastic. Cbs man. Hes in the company. Hes in the company and everyone loves him. I was going to say amy poehler. A loft of people saying jon stewart and Stephen Colbert. Those guys can do whatever they want at Comedy Central and do it with a political edge and can have their fbombs bleeped. And by the way, theyre already making network money. Its not like oh i can go to cbs and make what daves making. Theyre doing fine. Tempting but i think to your point, their show is built for cable. And you change it dramatically when you go on to a network. Chelsea handler, her act is racy and risque. The first woman joan rivers. Thats my goal now. Joan rivers returns to late night. I like it. Id watch that. Id watch fashion police. I cant turn it off. They want that younger, hipper feel. Jimmy fallon, jimmy kimmel have brought a huge audience, i think, because the way they also are so big on social media. I think they certainly have to factor in. Looks like someone named jimmy. Yeah. The other thing about amy and tina, i dont think they would do it anyway but i dont think theyd compete against jimmy, their best friend, their buddy. It should be said. David letterman, therell be long books and term papers and thesis about his impact on comedy. The jimmys and colberts and i saw judd apetow tweeting. And goes back to Johnny Carson. We talk about edgy. He was edgy. You know still is. But back then people thought, how is this going to work . He was so different from carson so different from leno and he was trying to make a statement and he did. All right. King of the oneliners. One that i couldnt stop thinking about this last night. So many of you tweeted us. Finally, Boomer Esiason has broken his silence about criticizing Daniel Murphys decision to miss three games including opening day. He came back yesterday, he missed opening day to be at his wifes side for the birth of their son noah. Well, esiason apologized on his radio show boomer carrton. Take a look. I want to say, in no way, shape or form was i advocating for anything for anyone to do. I would never tell women what to do with their bodies thats their decision, their life and they know their bodies better than i do. And the other thing, too, i felt bad about, Daniel Murphy was dragged into a conversation and their whole life was exposed. And it shouldnt have been. And that is my fault. That is my fault for uttering the word csection on this radio station. And it all of a sudden put their lives under a spotlight. And for that i truly apologize. What do you think of the apology . Before we move to daniel . I think it was heartfelt. I think Boomer Esiason had kids of his own, he knows what its like. Mike francesa who made similar comments, he has kids too. I think a lot of times, you get caught up in talk radio and youre supposed to have a take and it gets away from you. Not excusing what he said but i think his apology was heartfelt. They were probably playing to the audience a little bit. Theyre all good dads. And i dont think thats actually their point of view. Well, their audience turned on them. One or two people on twitter that say theyre right. But when you go on their face page its private. I think the overwhelming reasonable people out there on social media and throughout said it was an awful thing to say. And he stepped up and apologized and didnt play to the lowest common denominator three people who said he said it was a flippant comment. Flippant, its not flippant its a dumb comment. And it was about her body. Daniel murphy heres what he had to say. My wife and i discussed it, and we felt the best thing for our family was for me to try to stay for an extra day. That being wednesday due to the fact that you know she cant travel for two weeks. Shes going to be tougher to get up to new york for a month. So just to have that support system with her. You know i can only speak from experience, my experience but you know fathers seeing their wives, she was completely finished. She was done. Shed had surgery and she was wiped. And here with the ones that caught our eye is rickey. How are you . Were starting off our first topic with the tragic shooting in ft. Hood. The disturbing images. Its lucy hamlin leaning on her husbands foot as they wait to be let back into the base. Her husband is timothy hamlin. Its absolutely tragic. This is the second shooting there in less than five years, and the first one was the largest attack on a domestic military base. You can imagine so many other people waiting. Its not just a base of military members, its their families, as well, that live there. So many people affected. Really an entire city when you look at the size of ft. Hood. Yeah. Theres another photograph on the cover of New York Times this morning, as well. Some guys painting a memorial for the fallen. Bob butler and bob gordon of the city that ft. Hood is located in, and theyre painting crosses for a memorial outside of their church. The community is as they should and would rallying behind the base. And yesterday, all physical training was canceled at ft. Hood. But i think people are rallying together. All right. Lets move on to another big news story this week and that was the devastating earthquake in chile which killed at least six people. And this photo shows some of that powerful destruction and what Mother Nature can do. Yeah. Its a huge crack in the ground. Yeah. These are travelers just one day after walking. Its important to note that it is tragic that six people perished in this earthquake, but just in 2010, there was an 8. 8 magnitude earthquake and hundreds of people died. Experts are saying that stricter building codes and proper preparation really led to a lot of the safe situations that happened this time around. All right. Lets move on to a little bit lighter fair. So mike you say the paint is the good thing, its the easiest, cheapest way to make a difference. The question is, do you go neutral, do you go bold . I think you want to go neutral. The thing is if you have somebody with bold taste and they come into a neutral house, its not going to keep them from buying it. If you have someone with neutral taste and they come into a boldly painted house, they may not want it. Its a turn off for a lot of people. And when youre pulling up to a house, the front door jumps out at you. Tony hale said he painted the door yellow changed his whole house. I just got a new garage door at my house. Front door and garage door. The folks at remodelling. Com. Every year they do this value study. Youre going to get 90 plus percent of your money back on doors. I think if you have bad flooring, its a bad move if youre going to bring the house to market. If you have carpet redo it with filter grade carpet. It looks new, smells new, and its going to pay dividends big time. But laying new Hardwood Floors is expensive or it can be, right . It can be. One of the things about upgrades i try to preach to my clients all the time is do it while youre living there. Take the advantage of being able to have it yourself and then when you go on the market, its going to make the house easier to sell. What sells the home for me are kitchens. Kitchen renovations you say are important, but you can do Little Things that arent going to make theyre not going to cost a lot but will make a huge difference right . I agree. I hate to say it lipstick on a pig. One of the things i love right now is painting cabinets. Thats not a big cost. And you can really make a kitchen over amazingly just by doing something nice and making the cabinets look newer. And when we look at the statistics, the minor Kitchen Remodel pays off a lot more than the major one. So reface the cabinets dont replace the cabinets new hardware is a great thing to do. Stainless steel, though is what people really really still want. And granite if you can afford it. Lets jump ahead now to some of the worst Home Improvement investments. Just means youre not going to get your money back right . What are some of those . Windows are a loser, loser, loser on resale. If youre going to put new windows in a house and you live there, you get great economical dividends from that while youre living in the house. The problem is if you put new windows in and go on the market guess what the difference is between old windows and new windows . Not much, they look the same and nobody wants to pay for them. You want to be very careful of overimproving your house. Youve got to look at where you live, whats the neighborhood whats the market going to stand when you go out to sell. Look at the comparables. You actually physically dive and collect scallops with your bare hands . Well, yes. Its as simple as that, as classic as that. People have been diving for the shellfish for thousands of years. Were just doing what people have done thousands of years. And you were just out recently the other day. Two days ago i was on the seabed. These are your american dive scallops. These are scottish dive scallops and theyre very very different. Just the same. Theyre all king scallops. These are live right now. Right. The big americans that have come down from maine. Tamron and i feel good here. Theyre sitting here alive, theyre in a simmering pan. To do them honor, what youve got to do is leave nothing that gets in the way. Im going to pop some salt on each of these. I confessed to you, call lops are incredibly difficult to cook because its so easy to overcook them and make them chewy. You want to use an oil like this dont use olive oil. Really . Yeah oil with a high burning point. Olive oil starts smoking way too soon. It is smokey when you cook them. Right. Ive got them on medium heat. Medium to hot. What size are these . These are really big. Dive scallops generally are pretty big. But just good quality. And here now also i hear the spacing is key. If you put them too close together, that can be a problem. Yeah that can cause a problem. And you want to get them really golden. How many minutes on each side . Yeah, i mean you dont really want to have more than three. Oh, wow. So what im going to do now is put in the butter. Okay. Put the garlic into the butter. What does that do . Well just ensures you dont burn the garlic. Ive never heard that tip before. Okay. Ive never seen so many spoons in my life. Its brilliant. Okay. And now were just doing this. And youre spooning that butter over there, get them all golden. How long does this process take . In the pan, out of the pan . Great question. And important one. Three minutes. Is that all . Yeah three minutes on one side. You see it go half way up flip them over, start on the other side, then put in the butter with the garlic on top. No more. Okay.
