good morning, welcome to "today" on this saturday morning. >> and what an incredible sight yesterday to see the power of the people overcoming adversity. i know you were there for a week. this was an 18 day standoff. did you think that this was going to be the result? >> i had chills like everybody else watching it and, no, a week ago wednesday when the government thugs came marching in there, i thought it was over. but after the thursday of that week and you saw the people remain, then you kind of knew this was going to happen. let me show you the picture is taken a short while ago. tahrir square, people still there in the light of day. the partying has lasted all night into the day. i hear they're taking down some of the barricades. the tanks are still there, but -- >> look at those smiles. >> it became a family event. people wanted to be a part the moment. there are protests planned in algeria. that along with obama's decision to send mike mullen to jordan and israel where he will attempt to reassure two of america's closest allies. we'll get the latest in a moment. we're also following other stories back here at home including one from texas that has a lot of people talking. this teenaged beauty queen says she was stripped of her title because she gained too much weight. she says pageant officials scolded her about it and even told her to, quote, get off the tacos. but pageant officials are telling a very different side. we'll talk to the beauty queen live. also we're beginning a new series on unexplained mysteries. we'll start off with one of the most famous claims of alien abduction on record, where a group of men swear they had a close encounter with alien life and they all passed lie did he te detector tests. >> and today our weekend with the one and only joan rivers.li detector tests. >> and today our weekend with the one and only joan rivers.ie detector tests. >> and today our weekend with the one and only joan rivers. l it until you see her apartmenter and even her closet. >> clothes not exactly quiet. we want to begin, though, with history made in egypt after 30 years, people have spoken and a nation is now tasting freedom. our team coverage of the celebrations and the reaction begins with richard engel in cairo. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. people are still out on the streets. this could be the most transformative moment in the history of the middle east. at least since the 1967 arab/israeli war. people are no longer protesting their government. instead, they are consolidating their gains after their resolution was a success. egyptians a woke in what feels like a new nation. and they are immensely proud of it. in tahrir square, they still gathered by the thousands. but now to celebrate. and in a sign of the new optimism here, the desire to start over and rebuild. only 2 ho4 hours earlier, few k what would happen. it was supposed to an day of defiance. after friday prayers, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators gathered in tahrir square. they had a message for president mubarak. no compromise. they would not accept mubarak's plan to remain in office while transferring authority to his vice president. but by mid-morning, the army seemed to be backing mubarak saying it would guarantee that its props of reform would be carried out. and sending a message the army would make sure the people get democracy. now go home. but the demonstrators didn't give up. and by the afternoon, they heard their first good news of the day. mubarak had fled cairo. even as demonstrators converged on his palace. in the square, word spread that an urgent and important announcement would soon be made on state television. but the protesters didn't expect much. at 6:00 p.m. about, vice president omar suleiman, mubarak's long time aide, made a stunning announcement. just a paragraph long. so quick. egyptians barely heard it. >> translator: mubarak has decided to waive the office of the president of the republic. >> reporter: when they did, they realized mubarak, president of egypt for 30 years, was finally stepping down, handing power to the military. cairo and all of efigypt stood at once and cheered. shouts of egypt is free rang across the country. and so began the biggest, most joyful, loudest, wildest celebration in egypt's modern history. it was a moment when egyptians said they took ownership. what do you feel today? >> this is our country. this is my egypt. this is revolution. >> reporter: taking it back from the secret police that have see pressed free speech and democracy for three decades.uee pressed free speech and democracy for three decades.sup democracy for three decades. the people of egypt freed themselves with the help of the military. u.s. officials tell nbc news the egyptian military broke with mubarak after his speech thursday night. mubarak was expected to resign, but he didn't. the 82-year-old president in poor health just cooperauldn't himself to do it. mubarak thought the protests which he blamed on foreign media and excitementable young people would go away. the military was furious. senior officers threatened to take off their uniforms and join the protesters with the military and the people no longer with him, mubarak was finished. friday night, the military command announced it had taken charge but had no intention to stay in power. this council is not a replacement for the legitimacy of the people, said a spokesman. then a poignant salute to the 300 egyptians who died in this revolt. the army called them martyrs for freedom. egyptians celebrated in to the night. but while the military stepped in, it was these people who drove this largely peaceful and determined revolution. they would accept nothing less than mubarak's resignation and after just 18 extraordinary days, they got it. the egyptian people are free. egyptians today are still cleaning up this country after the revolt and they say next friday they're going to have a massive celebration with artists and celebrities and singers came to go tahrir square to celebrate their national liberation. >> it was remarkable that mubarak himself didn't make the announcement of his resignation. we then heard he'd left cairo. do we know anything about his conditions right now, is he incarcerated, is he free to come and go? >> reporter: the last word we received was that he is still in sharm event l and airport officials announced that current and former officials associated with the ex-regime have now been banned from leaving the country. so that is an ominous sign. there are a lot of people who want to bring lawsuit against him and want to investigate charges of corruption and human rights abuse. >> richard engel in a new egypt, if you will. thank you. this was a people's uprising and they ended mubarak's 30 year hold on the country. the celebrations lasted all day yesterday and will are crowds right now in tahrir square. ron allen was in the thick of it friday as word spread that would you bemubarak had stepped down p wh . what an amazing moment. >> reporter: it was. and it's just beautiful day here. the temperature is in the 70s. the sun is shining. i walked over along the nile near the square and it is just an amazing feeling of just satisfaction and celebration. there are families out and one of the things you see a lot of are people putting hair ktheir n tanks and pai intaking pictures. and people are cleaning up and there is a practical matter that there is a lot of glass, rocks and structures to be dismantled, but it's also a very symbolic gesture of giving this country and the heart of it a new fresh start. and that's what people want to do here. they want to begin with a clean slate, a fresh start and move forward with a feeling of pride and civic responsibility and just a feeling of celebration and that this is really something new that they're starting here and beginning here. something that they feel very, very proud of. >> and, ron, sunday is the start of the workweek in that part of the world. and i guess we can't even call them protesters anymore since they have achieved their goal, but do we expect the crowds to continue to fill the square every day or do people really feel the need to get back to work? >> reporter: i think people feel the need to get back to to work, but there are still today, there are thousands of people who are converging on the square and on the central city because this is the place to be. people want to say that they were here when history was made, so there are people converging on the square. but you're right, tomorrow, the beginning of the workweek, people will go back to those places where they had all those grievances that led them to sage protests and strikes. and there will be a lot of interesting dynamics in the workplace as people come emboldened, feeling like, okay, now is the time to assert myself and to demand my rights in this particular mace. it will be a lot of interesting confrontations and comings together, if you will, in the new cairo in the new egypt in different places of work. >> all right, ron, thanks to you and richard for your terrific reporting. >> and like all of us, president obama was watching the history unfold on television. he remains optimistic democracy will take hold in the nation with close ties to the u.s. mike viqueira is live from the bhous wi white house with more. >> reporter: the jubilation is reflected in joy and relief at the white house. but just as the u.s. has had limited influence over those unfolding events, it will also have limited influence over what happens next. after days of mounting frustration with hosni mubarak, the president was quick to welcome his sudden departure. >> this is the pourer of humwer dignity. egyptians have inspired us and they've done so by putting the idea that justice is best gained through nonviolence. >> reporter: he watched it unfold on an oval office television and later praised the egyptian military for their restraint calling on them to lead a peaceful transition. >> that means protecting the rights of egypt's citizen, lifting the emergency law, revising the constitution and other laws to make this change irreversible, and laying out a clear path to elections that are fair and free. >> reporter: but moving towards those locations may take time. and after 30 years of autocratic rule, experts worry about the lack of a viable opposition in egypt. >> if it gets hijacked by some much more radical element, that might include the muslim brotherhood. >> reporter: an islamic group suppressed for years that could play a role in the coming months. >> the fact is that right now i'm not sure that any of us can tell what positions the muslim brotherhood would take in a democratic egypt. >> reporter: u.s. officials acknowledge the stakes in maintaining stability in egypt. >> there is much work to be done. this is the beginning of that process, not the end of it. >> reporter: but in the wake of mubarak's ouster, the vice president wasted no time in calling for democratic change in another regional hot spot. >> i say to our iranian friends, let your people march. let your people speak. release your people from jail. let them have a voice. >> reporter: and in the wake of these dramatic events, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff from the pentagon, admiral mike mullen, has been dispatched to jordan which has had hints of unrest that match those of egypt and israel which is known to be nervous because of that 30 year peace that was made with egypt right here on the north lawn of the white house. >> all right, mike viqueira, thank you. and for the white house and the world, this is all unchartered territory. so what happens now? for more, we're joined by richard wolffe. good morning. >> good morning. >> so everyone has an opinion about how the white house handled this over the past 19 h. 18 days. some thought it was meddling too much, some thought the white house wasn't doing enough. do we know what the approach will be by the administration in terms of moving forward with egypt? >> lots of second guessing, but also the result is something the white house is very happy with. and they now know that in the middle of this turmoil, at least the president's view according to administration officials that i've spoken to, in this turmoil, there's a lot of opportunity, and also a lot of down side and that focus moving forward here is making sure the egyptian military does not stagnate, that this process towards democracy keeps moving forward. the danger is that in backing certain figures within the democratic movement, they can paint them with american support. so the emphasis here is on the whole movement towards democracy as opposed to picking winners or loser s which they feel was the approach of the bush administration in places like iraq and iran. >> and we heard president obama saying yesterday that the u.s. would continue to offer egypt both military and economic aid so long as that process to democracy continued. is dangling the so-called money carrot the right approach at this point? >> well, it's implicit and it has been used effectively as a threat when it came down to pushing the military and mubarak in the right correction eaght d. you don't have to make it explicit. military to military contact has been good. the relationship is strong there if needed, if the military looks like it's back sliding, hen it can be brought out. but i don't think from my reporting with white house sources, i don't think that that's where they're at at this point. >> we heard in mike viqueira's piece. israel's concerns. and israel said yesterday they hope peace with egypt continues. but is that potentially in jeopardy with the events that happened? >> well, there is concern both to reassure israeli leader, but also to make sure that whatever emerging in egypt and the broader region does protect israeli security and respect the agreements that that are already in place. obviously in egypt and jordan. so is there a concern? yes, there is. it's also a priority that whatever emerges, that they actually preserve israeli security and that treaty, that peace treaty between israel and egypt. >> and we heard vice president biden speaking directly to iran encouraging iran to let its people protest or march in the streets, as well. and interestingly, sarah palin took aim at the administration on twitter. she said will obama administration excerpt as much constructive pressure on iranian government to change an allow freedom as they just did for egypt? we heard the vice president making those -- or at least trying to speak to the iranian people, but is it a fair comparison? >> it's not. the leverage, the influence you can have is very different. secondly, the administration has been applying intense pressure on iran to change its ways both through the sort of bully pulpit that you'd hear from administration officials, but also through u.n. sanctions when it comes to iran's nuclear ambition. and then there is a question of allowing freedom. this is a very different scenario. if american officials could allow freedom in iran, it would have happened many decades ago. >> richard, we appreciate your time. >> thank you, amy. >> and we want to get you caught occupy some of the other headlines of the day. richard lui has been waiting patiently. >> good morning. we begin in algeria where hundreds of anti-government protesters are taking to the streets today. demonstrations are banned in the capital. the demonstrators are chanting no to the police state a. now back to the u.s. where your 30 year fixed rate mortgage could get more expensive. the obama administration wants to reduce the government's role in the mortgage market, but analysts believe the options given will drive up costs and tighten lending requirements. one objective here, dissolving troubled mortgage giant fannie mae and freddie mac could take five to seven years. washington intern chandra levy's killer has been sentenced to 60 years in prison. he was convicted last year of killing the former federal intern back in 2001. in a case take made nahat made headlines. and bhabout a 7% improvemen in spotting breast cancer tumors?
