A sunday sit down with talented maren morris whose anthem caught fire and the attention of the grammys on the long trip to the hit song and album that launched her to crossover stardom. Once i had written my church, i realized i dont want anyone to sing this except for me. That was a really defining factor in my life. It changed the whole course. A sunday sit down with grammy winner maren morris, and Hallie Jackson on the media echo chambers later in the show. Lets begin with the president enjoying the Holiday Weekend at one of his golf clubs, continuing to tweet thoughts about the press and explaining his use of social media. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell live in bridgewater, new jersey. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The president is hearing calls for him to tame twitter use and his answer is very clear. The president brought his own firecrackers to an event intended to mark the Independence Day holiday and to thank veterans for their service, but it also sounded a lot like a campaign rally. A salute to veterans brought the president back to the Kennedy Center saturday night. A red, white and blue evening. My very first Independence Day celebration as president. There is no place id rather be than with you. Tell you that. [ applause ] reporter the event hosted by a dallas evangelical megachurch, and the president knew his audience. We love our freedom and we love our god. Reporter the commander in treef in a trump friendly crowd waged his own battle. The fake media tried to stop us from going to the white house. But im president and theyre not. Reporter the president s war on media has a front line on twitter where saturday he blamed the, quote, fake and fraudulent news media for working hard to convince republicans and others i should not use social media. Ignoring a chore us of republicans who urge the president to stop tweets that overtake his own agenda. Tweets like this are inconsistent with greatness of the country and the office. Reporter the president kept up his stream of insults, calling frequent critics, morning joe hosts, crazy and dumb as a rock. The president who reveled in audience reaction made an all caps declaration of his dependence on twitter. My use of social media is not president ial, its modern day president ial. But its not the mode, its the message under fire. He insists his tactics on social media no matter how incendiary are no threat to his presidency. The Dishonest Media will never keep us from accomplishing our objectives on behalf of our Great American people. Reporter and the president is back here in new jersey this morning and the self described modern president says that part of his victory in 2016 is because of his social media use hes got to use it in order to go around the media. Weve heard him make this argument before and it looks like he will keep making it so expect more tweets coming soon. Willie . No backing down there. Kelly, thanks so much. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. Good to see you. So, there is the dignity of the office question with some of these tweets we saw this week, but there is also something kelly touched on the piece, and thats the efficacy of the president coming out and tweeting while hes trying to get health care done. You can see the frustration on the faces of people like Lindsey Graham and paul ryan and others as they had to spend two days this week answering questions about our friends joe and mika my cohosts, morning joe, rather than trying to push through health care. Hes acting like a spectator. Essentially the biggest single promise the Republican Party has made seven years is going down in flames right now in the senate. Mitch mcconnell is like a oneman band desperately trying to salvage this for the Republican Party, and the president is sitting there tweeting ridiculous insults. Mind you, the attack on mika, willie, really offended a lot of women. The three of the republican senators most uncomfortable with the Health Care Bill right now also happen to be women and were extraordinarily offended by what the president did, Lisa Murkowski in alaska, Susan Collins in maine. So, hes not helping at all. Hes yet to give a speech. He didnt understand the policy details that really bothered a lot of republican senators when they met with him. To throw it all on there, he continues this absurd war with the press and undermining his ability to get anything done on capitol hill. This, were not expecting an apology from donald trump. Weve watched this long enough now that we know hes not going to backtrack on it. He dug in again yesterday as you said. This is part of being a modernday president. Im using social media to go around the media and the media doesnt like that i dont need them to get my message out. Is that effective . It certainly helped get him elected using social media to go above everything else. What about as president . Look, its effective to keep his 38 constituency fired up and happy and sort of not walking away from him so that they dont Pay Attention that the promises hes made hes not been able to keep yet. But its not effective at getting a legislative agenda passed. Its not been effective at building coalitions. And, so, look, the irony here is he says the media is trying to get him to stop tweeting. The media is the one sitting there reporting on the tweets. The media is the one that went ahead and televised all of his speeches. Its members of his own staff and party that are desperately trying to get him to stop tweeting. So, it seems as if what ive learned, willie, is every time somebody tries to get him to stop tweeting he talks about that but he says the media was trying to get him to stop tweeting. Reince priebus was trying to get him to stop. Im president and theyre not was his explanation. The they is theyre not is about all of his staffers. I think youre absolutely right about that, chuck. Lets talk about the future, then, of health care. It wasnt but a few days ago Mitch Mcconnell hoped to get a vote on the Health Care Bill. Thats a dream. What happens when they get back . Is there hope to cobble this together . Maybe there is more funding on the open yoed crisis, maybe it works, maybe it doesnt. I was talking to somebody close to Mitch Mcconnell and the leadership. The plan is, willie, they come back, he has one more week period, one more week. And then hes going to cut, cut bait if they cant get it done. Then what youll see on health care is some sort of band aid. There will be a bipartisan deal, but not on something big. It would be sim plil to deal with the rural, the problem with the rural markets with the insurance exchanges and that will be about it. I think the republicans on capitol hill will try to move on to tax reform. My guess is the president who doesnt seem to really have an opinion on what bill he signs, he just wants to sign something, that might be enough for him. He said, hey, we dont get something done thats okay. That was his line this week. Chuck, thank you so much as always. Happy 4th to you and the family. Well be joined by senators tom carper and bill cassidy for an exclusive joint interview on the future of that Health Care Bill. Heavier downpours, but nothing too severe. Best chance of severe will be the midwest as the cold front slides farther to the south. We could see large hail and damaging winds. No real threat. And in San Francisco still waking up to that dense fog early on thanks to that marine layer that will keep us nice and cool at least through mid morning. The east bay looking hazy at 58 degrees. First high to an act of generosity, reward for hard work in rockwell, texas outside dallas. Andy mitchell was driving through rockwell on another 95 degree day when he spotted a young man walking along the road. Mitchell pulled over, offered him a ride in his truck. 20yearold justin corbo accepted and told him ever since his car broke down on him, he walks three miles each way in the heat to his job at taco casa where hes a cook. Working there to save money for a new car. Mitchell dropped him at work, so moved by his story, he posted on facebook, began a fundraising effort to get him that car. A rockwell pizza place put out a donation box, mitchell pitched in money, and the local toyota dealer dropped the price of a 2004 camry with some 6,000 in donations to cover the price of the car, a year of insurance, two years worth of oil changes and 500 gas card. The other day, they surprised justin at work, asked him to come outside to the parking lot to see his new car. The hugs and tears from justin tell you just what that gesture meant to him. Thats awesome. Hes just walking to work. And to have a random person do that for you. And his facebook post, andy is like we need more people like this. He works his tail off, all he wants to do is make his life better, were going to help him get there. Great story. Final low for the feeling you prepared your life for the moment you get to play with the Vienna Chamber orchestra and a dog completely steals the show. The orchestra was playing at the International Festival in turkey when a lab sneaking in on the left side of the screen, if you look at the bottom wanders onto the stage mid performance and the audience loves it. Theyre applauding for the dog. The dog then lies down, just sets up shop, facing the audience as the orchestra place on through the italian symphony number 4. Only a couple years ago morris was a song writer for other artists in nashville, a dream job she says she would have been happy to do forever. Once the music world heard her step in front of the mike and sing my church it was clear she needed to be seen out front. Shes collecting awards, singing with idols, singing the headline tour for her album. She found herself on stage at an arena in nashville being honored at the Country Music association awards. She and i got together for a sunday sit down at the palm restaurant across the street from the arena where just 12 months earlier she watched that same awards show on tv as a fan. New artist of the year goes to maren morris. This is so crazy. So last year i sat across the street at a bar and watched this show. This is kind of a Historic Place for you, this bar. You were sitting somewhere over there. I was in this booth with my manager janet and my boyfriend ryan. We were watching that tv over there. Did you have any dream, not the next year, thats too big a dream, that someday you might be on that stage . Definitely not a year later. But it was just one year later, maren morris was inside that arena outside accepting the new artist of the year award. She was only ten when she started to sing in bars like the White Elephant saloon at the stock yards in fort worth, texas. I was a shy kid but felt comfortable singing. At 17, morris stepped off the texas bar circuit and chased her dream by trying out for American Idol and the voice. She was turned down by both. Not even making it past the first round of auditions. So she went back home. It was hard. I think i hit a wall in texas. By the time i was 20, i had been touring a decade, which is crazy. It was almost like i was burned out at 20 years old. But she wasnt giving up. Maren packed a u haul, found a couple of roommates on craigslist and moved to nashville. Her singing demo wasnt catching on, but music city liked the way she wrote a song. Soon big name artists like Kelly Clarkson and particular mcgraw were singing her words. But there was one song only she could sing. I cussed on a sunday, i cheated and ive lied once i had written my church i realized i dont want anyone to sing this except for me. That was a really defining factor in my life, it changed the whole course because i was really protective of it, didnt play it or send it to anybody. If i was going to play it for someone, i had to do it from my phone. I was being so psycho about it. Rolled the windows down and turned out the lights. In 2015 morris recorded my church. Without a record deal, self released her single on the online Music Service spotify. Can i get a hallelujah, can i get an amen. It really encapsulates my world view on music and what it does for the human psyche and the heart. And i think like millions of people, i love to get in my car and just drive to think and listen to music and it is just you. Theres something cathartic about that and spiritual. Within days, marens song caught fire. My church was streamed on spotify 2. 5 million times in just over a month. At what point did you know that that was exploding . I remember someone had a label that passed on me twice as an artist. They were freaking out when they saw the spike with this song. With the whole town suddenly chasing her, morris signed with columbia nashville records. Maren launched her label debut album and it went to number one on the billboard country chart and crossed over to reach number five on the all genre billboard 200 list. Rolling stone called it the best country album of 2016. At the Grammy Awards in february, morris was nominated four times and won best country Solo Performance for my church. She then stepped from her acceptance speech to perform alongside alicia keyes, one of her heroes. How did it feel to be on the stage singing with alicia keyes . It felt iconic. It was oddly relaxed that day and winning my first grammy literally minutes before my performance with alicia calmed me down even more in a way ive never really experienced with Live Television because i usually get psyched out and stressed. Are you able to block out the circumstances generally, like not think about how far many million are watching at home, the grammys . Depends. Every awards show is different. I have these panic attacks mid song. There are no teleprompters at the acms during my song. I could use a love song. And i had the same thing happen with snl where you see the car crash about to happen and you just get too in your head for a second. I had that moment during the acms where i was like and heres where your career dies. Well, it doesnt show for what its worth. Thank you. Having a tiny panic attack on stage. I havent told anyone that. She was more relaxed back stage before a recent show in nashville on her hero tour, hanging out with her musician boyfriend, ryan hurt. I like to take a shot of tequila right before i go on. Then show time. So i look at my life, and yes, the last two years have been just insanity, chaos, beautiful, but i look at the time line of when this all really began and i think thats why im sitting here today. Of all the recognition maren received in the last couple years, one moment stands out. I had two missed calls from a south london number. I was like thats weird. My manager janet like texted me, she was like elton john is trying to contact you. Oh my god. He called me a third time, he was like is this maren . This is elton, he said. Im a huge fan of what youre doing, i have your record on vinyl and i love what youre doing. And im just hearing that voice ive heard my entire life, been a fan of, so influenced by, saying that to me over a phone call. And i had no witnesses to the phone call. We know youll answer next time south london pops up on the phone. Absolutely. Be like adele next time. Exactly. Not bad to have elton john as a fan of your first major album. By the way, years as a song writer paid off. Maren wrote or cowrote every song on her hero album. Since we visited her in nashville, she added more dates this fall by popular demand. Check her website for the fuel schedule. For back stage access and more on how she sits down to write a song, check out extras at today. Com sunday. Next week, the man that makes us rethink everything we thought we know, malcolm god well, bringing pop science to the people by the millions. Thats next week on sunday today. And dylan is back with another look at the weather. Hey, dylan. Good morning, willie and everyone. Lets look at what you can expect for the fireworks if theyre happening in your neighborhood tuesday night. Were looking at a couple of spotty showers in and around chicago area, back through the midwest. Western half of the country is nice and quiet. Temperatures are fairly comfortable, in the 70s and 80s, cooler in San Francisco and in the northeast nice conditions. Strong storms as you start the week through the middle of the country. As you get to middle of the week, pushes closer to the great lakes region. By end of the week, scattered showers and storms up and down the a very nice and cool start across the bay area. Right now in the south bay 56 degrees. 58 for the peninsula. Trivalley, 54. Its still foggy out in San Francisco at 51 degrees. 58 in the east bay. And now in the north bay nice and clear at about 52 degrees. We can expect to see the fog burn off and the temperature trend does show temperatures climbing into the upper 60s for San Francisco by midafternoon. And thats your latest forecast.
