The show. Well look at the actress life and hear from her costars. And later, a walk through harlem with one of the brightest culinary stars in the world, Marcus Samuelsson, to star dam as a chef. Ive seen so many different worlds and i know one thing, people want to feel like theyre included. People want to be with friends and family. Our sit down with Marcus Samuelsson and harry smith later on in the show. The president is fast approaching his 100 day mark, traditionally a measuring system for a new administration. The white house this week working on a budget package and hoping to avoid a Government Shutdown. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is live for us this morning at the white house. Good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. There is definitely a sense of a big deadline looming. Ive seen senior advisers and cabinet level officials at work all weekend. Sources tell me a repeal is no longer a goal for inside first 100 days, but expect to see progress. And they also think that the president will be graded on his leadership and not simply on legislation. Donald trump had been president just eight weeks when this soldier was gravely wounded in afghanistan. So i heard about this and i wanted to do it myself. So congratulations on behalf of melania and myself and the entire nation. Reporter saturday, the president presented sergeant Alvaro Barrietos with the purple heart. Back to the white house, the president s twitter feed appeared to respond to saturdays march for science, not organized as a political demonstration, many say the president s policies are ignoring science in favor of jobs. The president wrote, i am committed to keeping our air and water clean, but Economic Growth enhances environmental protection. Despite referring to the 100 day mark as a quote, ridiculous standard, the president surprised his own team by launching a policy rollout for day 97. Big tax reform and tax reduction,he tweeted will be announced. It is said the tax trump reform proposal will focus on typical fami families. We need to do more things for the middle class, and we need to put more money in their pocket. Reporter most urgent this week, government funding runs out friday. The white house and speaker ryan are working on a budget package, mindful of the president s demand for border wall funding. By saturday, day 100, the president hits the road. He tweeted about a big rally in pennsylvania, the same night as the white house Correspondents Dinner he refused to attend. Another president is facing a big milestone, former president barack obama will make his first public appearance tomorrow in chicago. And advisers say he will appear on stage with six students, hes not yet met, from high school to post graduate, of differing political views, even a republican. Hell lead a discussion about Civic Engagement for the future generation. Advisers tell me that president obama has no intention of criticizing his successor and although they wont censor the students, it is just not about politics of this white house. Advisers also tell me as of this morning, president s obama and trump have not spoken since inauguration day. Willie. All right, Kelly Odonnell kicking us off this morning at the white house. Thank you. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good to see you. Good morning, willie. Lets take a little walk through this upcoming week. Congress gets back from the two week recess on tuesday. President trump promised big tax reform on wednesday. We also have health care, paul ryan said there is something that has the finishing touches now being put on it, going in for another bite at that apple. And by the way, on friday, there has to be a budget deal or the government shuts down. So what actually gets done and what is just talk right now . Lets use a little bit of common sense here, willie. Do we think the president of the united states, any new president of the united states, facing a Government Shutdown possibility on day 99 of their presidency is going to somehow not end up blinking on whatever funding bill comes through . So, look, i think it is easy to sit there and say to yourself, do we really think that the white house is going to fight something that will force a shutdown, like forcing a down payment on the border wall into budget negotiations, threatening a potential shutdown, that would cloud Everything Else on his first 100 days . Call me extraordinarily skeptical on that one. I think were hearing a lot of bravado, trying to fulfill, have a big symbolic 100 day thing, which he doesnt yet really have outside of the Supreme Court, but i dont think theyll do anything to muck up the words and end up with a shutdown. Bottom line, there wont be tax reform and health okay just to put a fine point on this, this week. No. I think, look, i think what youll see is the tax cut proposal unveiled. But even that means it could be almost a year before we see any action any part of it enacted. As you pointed out, were six days now from the 100 days, the traditional benchmark for a new president. President trump has said it is a ridiculous standard to be held to and yet hes holding a huge rally in pennsylvania on his 100th day. I know you have some insightful polling coming up that youre going to debut on meet the press that shows what the public feels about President Trumps first 100 days, but what should the American Public point to as successes and failures and what separates fact from fiction with the Trump Administration . Bottom line is, his big, i think his biggest accomplishment, the first 100 days, is filling the Supreme Court seat. Cant take that away from him, but can make an argument thats Mitch Mcconnells accomplishment more than President Trumps accomplishment. Outside of that, look, hes not the first president to overpromise and not the first president to complain about the 100 day mark. By the way, it is a ridiculous standard and at the same time they all fall into the trap because they make these huge promises and i think the white house realizes that. Look, you and i spent a lot of time with President Trump. He does want to fulfill the marketing pledges that he puts out there, right. 100 days, feels good. He wanted to fulfill it. He wanted something big. And i think it does bug him, i think theyre going to flirt with trying to do something in the first couple of days of this week, and then realize theyre playing with fire. Before i let you go, chuck, want to ask you about the french president ial election, now set up as a bit of a proxy fight of american politics. President trump coming out for marine le pen, who is expected to do well today, when the polls close, president obama lobbed a call, said it was not an endorsement to emanuel macron. What should americans look for when the polling results come in tonight from france . I think you look at it through the lens of globalization in the same way there has been this anxiety over the Global Economy and this country, that is really what is fracturing europe at this point. Here is one way to look at it. That Many National security folks left and right said it to me, this way. A fractured europe leads to an insecure world, which leads to an insecure america. A europe that is less fractured usually means a more secure world and a more secure america. So the more divided europe appears, the more nervous americans should feel. Still a few hours away from the polls closing. Should be fascinating when the returns begin to come in. Chuck todd, thanks so much. Well be watching you on meet the press this morning. Chucks guests include House Minority leader nancy pelosi, white house chief of staff Reince Priebus and florida senator marco rubio. Now to news breaking overnight, the death of actress erin moran, who starred as Joanie Cunningham on the hit sitcom happy days. She was found dead on saturday in indiana. She hit some tough times in recent years, even suing cbs at one point over happy days royalties. This morning, her costars are remembering moran fondly. More from nbcs morgan radford. If you want to be stupid, then fine, im going home. But on the way, im stopping at jennie piccolos and give her a punch. Reporter the world knew her as feisty Joanie Cunningham. Give me elbows. Fonz was heart broken, tweeting, oh, erin, now you will have the peace you wanted so badly. And marion ross who played her mom on happy days, remembered moran as a talented performer. She was the quickest, fastest little kid, wonderful. And she was kind of a funny looking little kid at the beginning. And then she got more beautiful and more beautiful. This breaks my heart. Breaks my heart. Reporter erin moran was 56. For sunday today, morgan radford, nbc news, new york. Erin moran passing away far too soon at age of 56. Our condolences. Other news making headlines this morning, firefighters in florida battling wildfires burning in the central and southwestern parts of the state this morning. Thousands of people forced to evacuate. And at least nine homes have been destroyed. The National Guard has been deployed to help out. And were learning more this morning about a confrontation caught on camera on board an American Airlines plane on friday. Passengers telling nbc news a male Flight Attendant violently grabbed a womans stroller she brought on board, nearly hit her baby in the head with it and lashed out at other passengers who confronted him about it. Passengers say the Flight Attendant also refused to apologize to the woman whose stroller he grabbed. American airlines responding quickly, suspending the Flight Attendant and promising a full investigation. The woman was upgraded to first class on a different flight. And another stunning moment caught on tape, a little girl falling out of the back of a church van. The video is disturbing, but we should tell you the girl survived and already out of the hospital. An emt was driving behind the vehicle with his dash cam rolling when the door swung open and the little girl flew out. He and another motorist rushed to her aid, able to stop traffic in all directions. The girl suffered a broken jaw. Believe it or not expected to make a full recovery after that fall. The bus driver unaware what had happened, returned 15 minutes later to the scene. Want to emphasize again, she is okay. And already out of the hospital. Thank god. Dylan with a look at the weather. We have got a lot of rain, especially down across the southeast, where we are going to see the rain stick around for several days actually. We have flood watches in effect until about tuesday. Heavy rain moving through atlanta, eastern tennessee, eastern kentucky, and we are going to see it basically take hold of the carolinas over the next couple of days. Down through id say north of charleston and across southwest southeastern parts of north carolina, we areliking for as much as five inches of rain. So it is going to be very wet, ground is going to get saturated and thats why we could see some additional flooding with some of those downpours. It is going to slowly meander across the area, but it is also going to produce much needed rain for florida where things have been good morning. We are in for a fairly cool sunday across the bay area. Right now waking up to 40s and 50s and the temperature trend is showing a climb in the temperatures into the upper 50s and 60s for the most part, about ten degrees cooler than yesterday. Mostly clear skies are expected throughout the afternoon. And thats your latest forecast. Dylan, thanks a lot. Straight ahead, dylan and i have the highs and lows of the week, including an army veteran who finished the Boston Marathon. The moment at a professional tennis match that has to be heard to be believed. A couple of enthusiastic love birds holding up play. Well explain. Plus, the king of cable news forced from his throne as bill oreilly leaves fox news. Harry smith has a look at the forces pushing Companies Like fox to change. It is all coming up on sunday today. Our photo of the week, an enormous iceberg passing by the south shore of newfoundland up in canada. Lucis a lucky dog. But not every pet is as lucky as lucky. So we came up with a little idea, this year, when you buy any bag of dog or cat food at petsmart, well give a meal to a pet in need. Its like this when pearl eats, peanut eats. When wolf woolfs, george gorges. And when moose mows down his meal, cuddles cuddles up to a bowl. You buy any bag, well give a meal. Its that simple. Well, these have syrup. So, we drain it. Well, these dole fruit bowls are packed in 100 fruit juice. So, you dont drain it . No, we drink it. Dole. The only National Brand that packs its entire line of regular fruit bowls in 100 juice. So i use excedrin. Ments from my life. It starts to relieve migraine pain in just 30 minutes. And it works on my symptoms, too. Now moments lost to migraines are moments gained with excedrin. [heartbeat] um, i got something on this, but im not quite sure what it is. Its jelly. Definitely jelly. Its already coming out. Does tuesday work . Treat your clothes better with new tide pods plus downy. Cleans and conditions in one step. Its got to be tide all right, dylan and i ready to whip through the highs and lows of the week, off we go. Our first high goes to everyone who ran in this weeks Boston Marathon, but especially to a couple of americas military veterans. Retired Army Staff SergeantEarl Granville became an internet sensation when he crossed the finish line in boston with both hands full. 33yearold granville lost his leg to an ied on his third deployment to afghanistan. The explosion claimed the lives of his two friends and fellow soldiers. Running his fourth Boston Marathon on a prosthetic leg, he carried the American Flag for the entire 26 miles and as he neared the finish, he scooped up his running guide, andy, and carried her across the finish line as well. Earl was not alone. Jose luis sanchez, a marine who lost his leg to an ied in afghanistan, carried a flag given to him by his unit as he recovered from his injuries. Sergeant sanchez saying after the finish, quote, i wanted to not only recognize veterans but anyone that thinks they are not able to do something. Not only finishing a marathon, but doing it with a prosthetic leg and carrying an American Flag the whole way. It was windy for the Boston Marathon. That flag is even that much harder to carry. A lot of people wondering, sergeant granville carrying andy, a running guide, you can have a guide run with you if you feel like you need help along the way, he said i dont need you anymore, scooped her up and threw her over his shoulder and crossed the finish line. Our first low goes to americas favorite cuddly goon, new England Patriots tight end rob gronkowski. Gronk was last seen power chugging beers thrown to him from the crowd during the pats super bowl parade. This week, the patriots visited the white house to celebrate their title with President Trump. Before the ceremony, though, gronk was wandering around the west wing like a kid who got lost on the white house tour. Well see what pans out in the negotiation but i think there is an opportunity can i just i think i got this, but thank you. Maybe. All right, thanks, man. Gronk even found his way into the oval office, where he got a fist bump from the president of the united states, which, of course, he quickly tossed up on instagram. Later that same day, more celebrity guests in the oval, as former Alaska Governor sarah palin visited President Trump for dinner and brought along her pals ted nugent and kid rock. The three took a mocking photo in front of the official portrait of former first gonzalez hi lady hillary clinton. Thats pretty gross. Back to gronk. He owns being a goon so well. I love him. Is goon the right word . Probably the perfect word for it. I mean it as a compliment that this case. A great father son moment. 9yearold colt koyler lives with his family on a farm in pierceton, indiana, huge cubs fan. But has never been to a game at wrigley field. He watches every game on tv and dvr the ones on after his bed time. Colt also gets good grades, works hard on the farm and never complains. So his dad figured it was time for a reward. What is it, colt . What is it . Me and daddy are going to wrigley field. Who are they playing . The cardinals, the st. Louis cardinals. Thank you. Colt is going to wrigley for cubs cardinals and the cubs are ready for him. Check this out, allstar first baseman anthony rizzo, colts favorite player, tweeted after seeing that video, this is awesome. When you come for the game, colt, ill have batting practice passes waiting for you, no better place to see the cubs than on the field. Then, cubs pitcher john lester took it a step further, hey, colt, i know you guys have tickets, but how about you and your dad sit in my personal s t seats when you all come to wrigley . Just when you thought the story couldnt get any better. The cubs stepped up. They stepped up. And the setup for that video was so cool. His dad said i have something we have to do, it will take all day, he thought work on the farm but instead tickets to the game. You have mom tears. Welcome to the club. I never cry. Our final low to the unusual distraction this week during a match at a professional tennis tournament. Americans frances tiapo and Mitchell Kruger playing in the sarasota open whose courts are ajdjacent to a condominium complex where a couple of residents were enjoying an intimate evening at a high volume. Well, that is the most bizarre situation i dont know how to put this, folks. Kruger grabs a ball and fires it in the direction of the noise. And things settle down for a moment. But, the loving couple quickly resumed their play. I still hear it. It is still going. What is going on . He cant be that good it cant be that good, he screams, in their direction. Got to love the woman in the crowd too telling the boy next to her, earmuffs. Cover your ears, dont listen. We didnt play the sound for you, but i think by now you probably read between the lines. I never heard of that in sports. I never heard of that before. Maybe move the tournament farther from the condos. Its going to be the kind of system, though, that might just get a little dirt and wet dots on your car. So hopefully you got a rain check. We are expected to see some 50s and 60s today. Definitely a lot cooler than what we have seen in the past couple days. We had that weak cold front kind of swoop in overnight, and thats whats going to keep the temps spring like but definitely below seasonable. Right now in san francisco, 53 degrees. North bay, 46 degrees, and the temperature trend right now is showing we are going to see plenty of sunny skies for today. By 11 00, expect to see highs in the 60s for san jose. It happened just after 7 00 last night at a twostory home in sunnyvale. The family who was inside the home when that fire started made it out safely. Firefighters say the fire may have ignited on the roof of the home. They were forced to fight the flames from ladders because of the risk the roof could collapse. Firefighters say the smoke was so bad they told people to shelter in their homes. We actually went door to door and just knocked on doors to make sure if anybody was inside, tell them to stay inside, keep the windows shut. It was very heavy smoke early on. Firefighters stay at the scene for several hours to watch for hot spots. A deadly shooting near California State University east bay. Police say it happened just after 8 00 last night on fielding drive, just off College Heights park. Officers say when they arrived, they found a 21yearold man suffering from gunshot wounds. A bullet went through the trunk and stopped short before going through the seat where the child is sitting. The gunman is still on the loose. Coming up at 7 00 on today in the bay, giving back to the community. We here at nbc bay area will roll up our sleeves to make a difference this weekend. Well show you the nationwide effort to improve our community. Well have your top stories and vianey is back with a look at a chance of showers. For now, back to the today show. It may seem like awardwinning chef Marcus Samuelsson was born to cook, but his live began in the turbulence and tragedy of ethiopia, far from the kitchens of europe and new york where he became a star. At 24, samuelsson was named executive chef of the highly regarded new york industry aqua beat. Six years later, the attacks of september 11 made him rethink this live and ask himself what he was doing to help the city where he lived and worked. Marcus dreamed up a restaurant in harlem called red rooster, a place that affected the food, culture and history of its community. Marcus and i got together in jimmys supper club downstairs of red rooster for a sitdown. Tell us about the room were in now, ginnys . Yeah. Red rooster is food comes first and music and arts second. Ginnys it was music at first. Down by the riverside i didnt feel red rooster was complete without this room. I think a lot of people opening a restaurant arent thinking about community integration. Theyre thinking about how many they can get every night. But to you, it was important. You took a survey of where this was, what the people around you might want, where they can work in your restaurant. Why was that important . My dad always said if you want to do something great. It took seven years. I moved here seven years before i opened the restaurant. And it was to learn about the community that me and my wife and my son are living in right now. Over those seven years, samuelsson let the neighborhood tell him what his restaurant would look like. He absorbed harlem style, its art and its taste. The biggest hits on red roosters menu include a seafood stew called harlem chowder. And a whole deep Fried Chicken known as yard bird. A charismatic star in the kitchen of his 20 some restaurants. Im using the dough but just to thicken my stock. And a familiar face on popular cooks shows like top chef and chopped, samuelsson entered an elite club in 2009 when president obama asked him to be the chef at his administrations first state dinner. Is it nerveracking to be back in the kitchen, this is going to the leader of the free world . I did get nervous. I called my mom actually, walking outside of the oval office. I said, mom, im at the white house cooking dinner for the president. My mom said to me, listen, do not embarrass the samuelsson family. Do not embarrass i didnt need this right now. She slapped through through the phone . Yes. With all of his success, its easy to forget how unlikely samuelssons story is. Marcus was born in ethiopia in 1971. My journey really starts in a hut that is about the size of two tables in my restaurant. When he was just 2 years old, he, his sister and his mother contracted tuberculosis. Marcus mother walked with her children some 75 miles to a hospital. She died but she saved her children. Its something that will never really go away. But, you know, we also got to look at it like we got saved. She sacrificed. During ethiopias civil war, marcus and his sister were separated from his family and later adopted by a swedish couple named samuelsson. Growing up with african roots in scan scandinavia, what was that like . It was our journey. When you take that family picture, it looked french. Of course we were the only black family not just on the block. In the village. Actually in the city. My parents were white. My cousins are korean, my aunt is jewish. Ive seen so many different worlds. And i know one thing. People want to feel like theyre included. People want to eat well with their friends and family. And people want to sit around the table and just tell stories. Samuelsson learned to cook at the side of his grandmother helge whose meatballs are on the menu of red rooster. I always thought i would become a soccer star. Being humble and achieving your dream, i always look at myself as a failed soccer player. Theres a lot of things in cooking and soccer that are the same. You have to work a lot with coach or chef. Working of soccer and level of friends and family of soccer, i transported that into the kitchen pretty quickly. And i knew that i could cook because my grandmother had gave us that as a gift, truly. Or forced to us cook. As a teenager, marcus set out to cook around the world on a cruise ship. Did you know from that age, this is what im doing with my life . The blessing of being a young black kid is you have to be more focused, have to be more precise. My father was on me about this all the time. Theres not a lot of room to be number two or number three. Cooking for me, its not a profession that you pick, you know, maybe the way you pick to become a journalist, doctor, or police officer. Its a calling. Samuelsson held apprenticeships in the notoriously tough Old School Restaurants in europe. Those european restaurants can be a little unforgiving, fair to say . Yes, yes. See, i never connected to race. It was tough love. If you messed up, it came back to you hot in the face. Maybe a plate, a pie in a pan. It happened to all of us, not just me. Equal opportunity . Exactly. It was an apprenticeship that changed his life. Marcus was in named executive chef there and became the youngest chef to ever get a threestar review from the new york times. Chef whats up, baby . You good . Marcus walks the streets 6 harlem every day keeping an eye on the flavors. Do you draw inspiration past these plays . You know what it is, willie, the people come in there, they know what to order without looking at the menu. I come here to check myself. I dont want to be compared with these guys, trust me. They caution me. They caution me. You can tour the world with food on this block alone, its amazing . Going from puerto rican, italian, dominican, and of course, mexican. And its delicious. And these are all immigrants telling their story about where they came from. And the entrepreneurs, too. Were now here, i love it. Youve been here 24 years. You cant get more flavorful. Wow. Theres so much going on here. Marcus hires from the community and works to train the next generation of chefs. So, youre going to show us how this is done . All right. Were going to do it again. Excellent. And watch this cook, right . A little bourbon. Whoo marcus, do you still love being in the kitchen . Theres nothing better. You know, you see something transform, and you know youre making someone happy. If you dont get happy after eating this, i cant help you. I aspire one day to be like him. Dream big. Thats all i can say. Dream big. Next for marcus, hes bringing those harlem flavors to london where a red rooster will open next month. Marcus goes back to visit ethiopia regularly. He reconnected with his biological father in 2000 and married his wife maya there in 2009. To hear marcus talk about how sleptth chan september 11th changed his life, check our website.
