As fbi director james comey is set to testify tomorrow about a possible investigation into russian ties with the Trump Campaign and later airbnb, the home sharing company is changing the way we stay. Our sunday sitdown with cofounder on a big idea that started with three air mattresses on the floor of his apartment. What if you could go somewhere and feel like you live there . Our sunday sitdown with airbnb cofounder a bit later in the show, but lets begin with a heightened alert at the white house after two security scares there. They did come with the president not in town this weekend. Were in West Palm Beach near his estate. Good morning. Whats the latest . The latest . Reporter good morning, willie. The coming days will be high risk, high reward for President Trump, but the news this morning is something over which he had no control. Another test for the secret service. Sources close to the investigation say a man was arrested and detained after he claimed that he had a bomb in his vehicle. The us is picture was taken into custody at a checkpoint near the white house. Growing security concerns at the white house today after Officials Say the secret service detand a mined a man in a suspi vehicle at a checkpoint late saturday, hours after a separate incident, a suspect jumped over a Police Barrier in an apparent attempt to get to the white house fence. President trump was safe here in palm beach, heading into a pivotal week for his presidency. President Trumps Supreme Court pick neil gorsuch face his confirmation hearing, while the Gop Health Care bill faces a vote this week under fire from many conservatives. Vice president mike pence implored them to get behind the Obamacare Repeal saturday night in palm beach. We need every republican in florida to support this bill and support the president s plan to repeal and replace obamacare. Reporter President Trump sounded confident that the Republican Health care plan would succeed in an interview that aired saturday on fox news. The answer is, yes, were going to get something done. Reporter thats harder to see at town halls where frustration and anxiety are aimed at lawmakers. Shame, shame, shame. And on monday, another Political Drama set to unfold as fbi director James Comey Testifies on capitol hill about russian interference in the 2016 election. Two weeks after President Trumps unsupported wiretapping accusation against barack obama. Although they appeared cordial during the transition, President Trump suggested obama supporters are behind leaks. Mr. Trump was asked if he thinks president obama wants him to succeed . While hes nice personally, there doesnt seem to be a lot of nice things happening behind the scenes and thats unfortunate. Reporter and today the president is expected to fly back to washington and it is also expected that hes going to add to his top leadership at the department of justice, a new york lawyer named George Conway is expected to be named the head of the civil division, which would have a sweeping power over some of the cases involving the Trump Administration. I did say conway, he happens to be the husband of kellyanne conway, counselor to the president , but George Conway never had any direct involvement in the donald Trump Campaign or the administration so far. Willie . Kelly odonnell starting us off this morning in West Palm Beach. Kelly, thanks. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Good morning, my friend. Good morning, willie. Lets take a look at the week that was and how two of the United States biggest allies must be feeling, germany and great britain. Awkward moments between President Trump and Angela Merkel not just in the oval office when the president appeared to refuse a handshake with Angela Merkel and then at the joint press conference, he said, well, we both have been wire tapped, obviously, a touchy subject for the chancellor there. Where do we stand now with germany and great britain. Two of our closest allys . Look, it is an i dont think one president ial dust up is going to somehow up end these alliances. But it is certainly makes for awkwardness between these allies. The german the British Spy Agency is an important intelligence ally for the United States. And to have an accusation that has been made by the president and the United States that somehow the British Intelligence agency was being used to spy on him or used to go around the u. S. Intelligence i mean, it is one of those things that could actually have an impact on Intelligence Agency to Intelligence Agency work. And then as for germany, i think what we saw is two people who just simply are ideologically opposed to each other when it comes to their world view. Angela merkel has a pro european world view and i think we know this president doesnt believe propping up europe is necessarily in the best interest of the United States. A lot of body language reading going on over the last week between the two of them. Let me move, chuck, to fbi director james comey, testifying before the house intel committee, highly anticipated, all eyes in washington across the can country and the world really will be watching this. How much can we expect to learn . How much can director comey say about a possible investigation into russian ties with the Trump Campaign . I think at a minimum i expect to hear him somewhat be unambiguous about the issue of the wiretap claim. Thats number one. I think thats the most likely piece of news he makes, it is an open hearing, and on that while he doesnt he wants to take the position of he cant comment on investigation as it is ongoing, i got to think he will do that beyond, you know, what does he say about potential allegations of collusion, the state of the investigation, where it stands, i have a feeling thats we may not learn as much as some folks maybe anticipating because of the sensitive nature of it. Also, in the house this week, chuck, speaker ryan leadership in the house said they would like to get to a vote on this new Health Care Bill as early as this week. Now, as you know, chuck, senators, republican senators have said flatly this thing will not pass the senate in the current form. How does this play out . Look, i think right now theyre making a political argument and they may be successful. Speaker ryan, President Trump may say not passing this in the house will be a political debacle for the party. So you got to pass it out of the house, i think some of the argument may be, hey, this is a hot potato. Im tired of it. Arent you tired of it . Make the senate deal with it. Theyre going to really hate this thing. And i think thats what is the most likely scenario. Whatever it takes to get this passed in the house is only going to make it harder in the senate anyway, i have a feeling thats where were headed. Pass the hot potato. Thats one way to get health care. Thank you very much, chuck. Well be watching of course. Meet the press this morning when chuck will be joined by the president s budge director Mick Mulvaney and adam shift, the ranking democrat on that house intel committee. We have new information this morning about the man who pulled off a series of attacks in and around paris on saturday ending with him being shot to death at the orally airport. The attacker, a suspected islamic terrorist. Keir simmons is live in london with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning. An autopsy is set to be carried out on the body that will include a drug and alcohol test, but overnight, the french prosecutor revealing that he shouted he wanted to die for allah and was carrying a copy of the koran. He was a longterm criminal but those details will inevitably lead to the conclusion perhaps there was a terror motive here. He was stopped at a police checkpoint, asked for i. D. , fired some kind of pellet gun at a police officer, went on to hijack a car, that took him to the airport where he tried to grab a soldiers gun and then of course was shot dead. So all of that lends to the possibility that he was more of a lone wolf rather than someone being directed. It will also increase the fears that europe hashers albeit small numbers of extremists. Willie . Keir simmons covering that story in london for us this morning. Keir, thank you. This morning, music fans around the world mourning the loss of a legend. The weather in the northeast, though, wreaked havoc on their trip back to washington, so they rented a chevy impala on tuesday evening and drove the 1600 miles together. They werent especially close before the trip but that changed as they talked politics and sang on the road trip, documenting the journey along the way. Just cant wait to get on the road again weve got a long way to go and a short time to get there a strong playlist. The congressmen made pit stops in new york but also to stop in graceland in memphis. Great skate across the hood, by the way. They got there in time to cast their votes. On friday each cosponsored a legislation of the other guy, signed on to his legislation. So they got some results on their road strip. So they actually talked politics in the car, it wasnt all fun . Yeah. I liked the roof slide. Everyone was obsessed with one reporter. Later on, he took a quick snooz during press secretarys sean spicers q and a. Come for spicer, stay for gizzi. How can you miss a press briefing these days . Our next high goes to hockey opponents mere moments after they were throwing haymakers at each other. They got into a fist fight during the game and were sent to their respect active penalive p for it. As you can see in this friendly chat, the players buried the hatchet quickly. We have to work on our cardio this summer, huh . Good luck of the rest of the year. That chat went back and forth like that for about 10 seconds, just two guys hanging out in the penalty box after slugging each other in the jaw. Our next low comes to insult to injury. Commuters in the United States woke up and had to dig themselves out of the snow just to begin their commutes. Then this happens. After two feet of snow fell in new york, the train tracks were buried. The first one through was a big amtrak train that plowed to a stop and buried passengers in a flying wall of snow. Luckily no one was seriously hurt. You were out in that weather this week. I was out in it, but i literally cant get over that video. How do you not see this huge cloud of snow . You have to catch it on your i phones or y iphones and stand there and catch the blow. Professor robert kelly was interviewed live on the bbc last week. His two children who paraded in were swaggered during that interview. His wife dove in to drag the kids off british tv. His fans wanted to know more, so the two held a press conference in week in their home country of south korea. Once again it was fouryearold marian stealing the show, this time working a lollipop while wearing a super cool trench coat and pink glasses. Im there in my suit delivering my talking points or whatever, and suddenly reality bursts in. This is the first line of my obituary, right . Im bbc dad for a while, i suppose. This weeks pga Arnold Palmer invitational, a hazard that didnt bother cody gribble one bit. As he walked up to the sixth fairway, there was an alligator sunning himself on the course. The next day, maybe same gator, same hole, but a different reaction. He sees the gator in almost the same spot and runs for the hills along with his caddy. San jose mostly cloudy and in the mid50s to start your morning. 52 in dublin as we wrap up the st. Patricks day festival. Weve got the fun walk and run this morning. Upper 60s by 2 00. Also green on the radar. Youre seeing a few light showers passing through the north bay. This the first in a series of systems relatively weak compared to what we expect coming our way monday. Today mostly cloudy. 60s to near 70 around the south bay. A few showers possible but look at the 7day forecast. Rain making a big comeback tomorrow afternoon. Showers to follow tuesday and wednesday. At this point wednesday afternoon into thursday looks drier and then the stronger of the two storms well see this week coming in on friday, could see two to three inches in the coastal mountains. All this as spring officially starts early tomorrow morning. Doesnt look like it much in the 7day forecast. A couple of peeks of sunshine yesterday which was nice. More rain ahead in the next seven days. In this age of technological revolution, we can hit a button on our phones and in a matter of minutes have groceries at our door, a ride in the driveway or a place to stay. If you havent used air bnb, you probably have heard about it. A host looking to make a few bucks posts a listing for a room or an entire home up on an air bnb site. A traveler looking for a deal shops the site and chooses a rental. Rental and host are matched and air bnb takes 3 of the price. Hotels and cities are now scrambling to skekeep up. I stopped by to visit brian chesky who is the company ceo and head of community where else but in his airbnb in new york. How does a 35yearold ceo with an estimated personal net worth approaching 3 billion travel the world . By crashing at other peoples homes. So youre actually staying in this airbnb rental . This is a house in harlem. My girlfriend and my mom were here last night and we had food here together so its pretty cool. Ive literally stayed in hundreds of them. At one point i lived on the website. I gave up my home and we would go home to home. Its been a Pretty Amazing experience. Reporter airbnb began nearly a decade with three inflatable air mattresses on the floor of Brian Cheskys living room. Today the company has 3 million listings in 100 countries around the world. Its valued at 30 billion, nearly twice the value of hilton worldwide. You mentioned you were perhaps an unlikely business mogul growing up. Your high school quote was a Jerry Seinfeld quote. My high school quote was im sure ill amount to nothing. I came home one day, my dad had a copy of the yearbook and he said, nothing . I was like, whatever. Reporter i hope you frame that. Theres some irony to it now. Maybe now there is. Chesky grew up in albany, new york, the son of two social workers. At a young age he was fascinated by improving things that just didnt seem right to him. Reporter when you were a kid, you would ask for christmas presents because you didnt like their design . I was obsessed with things like game gear and gameboys and these different devices and i wanted to redesign them. When i was a little kid, i asked my dad to buy disney stock so we could get the disney annual reports, because in the disney annual reports they had renderings of the new rides and theme parks and i could use the renderings to redesign the theme parks. In hindsight these were slightly peculiar interests. Reporter you think . I guess i was obsessed with designing things and probably first and foremost a better way to design communities. Reporter so instead of asking to go to disney world you were asking for the annual report . Exactly. Reporter long before he became the leaders of the economy, he was an artist, a hockey player, even a competitive bodybuilder. You still jacking some steel . A little bit. When you travel, its tough to do as a ceo. Reporter if a model icon of a startup involves dropping out of school, he took a different route. He went to the school of art and design and there he met the cofounder of airbnb. We had this really simple idea. What if you could go somewhere and feel like you live there . Reporter that simple idea was born of necessity. Chesky had quit his design job and joined gebia in San Francisco. Between the two of them, they couldnt pay their first months rent. That weekend there was this conference, all the hotels were sold out, and we had this idea. Lets just create a bed and breakfast for the design conference. We pulled out the airbeds, we inflated them and called them the air bed and breakfast. Reporter a light bulb went off. But skeptics didnt believe people would invite strangers into their homes. Without investments, they began covering their costs by selling breakfast cereal. So joe and i were totally broke, and one night, a late night in the kitchen, air beds arent selling very well, maybe well go into breakfast cereal. Then we ended up selling barack obama themed cereal. We called it obama oats, the breakfast of change. That was actually how we funded the company. Today we say were cereal entrepreneurs. Reporter their scrappiness caught the attention of investors, about the time the economy was crashing. We hadnt made any money. Paul gretsky said he was looking for something that wouldnt die. Thats when it started taking off. The idea literally spread city by stecity, block by block. Reporter with airbnbs 20,000 listing in 2011 to 3 million today, regulators in many cities are struggling to handle the boom in shortterm rentals. Were sitting in a beautiful home in new york city, which is one of the many cities thats passed laws and regulations to try to restrict airbnbs ability to operate here. What do you say so critics who say its bad for Affordable Housing . The story in most of our community are people with average income who depend on the money to get by. The average person is renting the home they live in. Reporter airbnb recently launch aid new division called experiences. Travelers can book a stay that comes with a local experience, like surfing with adventure man in l. A. , finding zen in San Francisco, or learning from a samurai artist in tokyo. I think one of the things you and others have found that especially younger customers are seeking these experiences. They dont want to accumulate things as much as life experiences. How did you tap into that . I think there was this shift that happened where when i was a kid, the American Dream was to have like a nice house and two cars. I think the rise in social media changed it, because suddenly people started valuing experiences more. Reporter a new experience launching this month in new york, a partnership with an urban farm called harlem grown. Rent a room and spend a day helping out. Have you seen in research, brian, that customers want more of this kind of experience . They dont just want to see the eiffel tower or the statue of liberty, they want the experience. You leave and they have a memory of people. Where this is going is not just a place to stay. Were going to design the end trip for you. Travel is not about where you go, its about who you become and the memories you can make. I really want to be in the business of creating these magical experiences, not just a place to stay. Reporter brians advice for you budding entrepreneurs. He said its better to have 100 people bwho love your country than a Million People who like you. Dont worry about being huge, worry about doing something that makes a huge difference to a small number of people. Airbnb could take on a whole new meaning in the future. To hear his fascinating thoughts on air travel, go to today. Com sunday and thanks again to the people at harlem grown. Come see him in new york. Tracy ellis ross, golden globe winner on the series blackish. Thats next week on sunday today. Indra is back with another look at the weather. Hey, indra. Tomorrow supposedly spring, right . Doesnt exactly feel that way in the northeast. Temperatures well below normal today thanks to the low thats in place. The rest of the country, though, they feel like they skipped spring and theyre all the way in summer. Temperatures 20, 30 degrees above average. Phoenix today could set a record at 94 degrees. Thats almost 20 degrees above where you should be this time of and were seeing lots of clouds around the bay area this morning and a few light showers passing around the north bay as we see mostly cloudy skies moving ashore this morning and another system arriving tomorrow that will bring substantial rain. Today, overcast skies. Closer to 70 around san jose and the trivalley and the 7day does get active as the rain makes a big comeback. A stronger storm arriving on friday. Tomorrow is spring. Im ready. Next on sunday today, the network of churches in los angeles that are preparing families of undocumented immigrants for steppedup scrutiny hows it going . Oh, its going good. Yeah . Some of the pushback toward undocumented immigrants is coming from the Catholic Church. In our sunday spotlight, Jacob Soboroff visited a church thats preparing families for a knock on the door. Reporter here at this church in South El Monte, california, every night at 7 00 p. M. There is a catholic mass, but tonight theyre doing something a little bit different. Lucy, this is you . Anyone who looks like this is at risk. Because youre stopping everybody. Reporter thats a lot of people in los angeles. Tell me about it, yes. Reporter los angeles is majority minority. That means there are officially more latinos here than any other ethnic group. Los angeles is also home second to undocumented people, over a million and the biggest catholic archdiocese with 4 million worshippers in the United States. I met anna here, and while shes a u. S. Citizen, neither of her parents are. Youre 13. Why did you show up here . Its difficult to picture a life without your life, you know. My mom and dad have always been here for me, and theyre literally the world to me, and i wouldnt like to imagine a World Without them. Reporter you came here tonight to learn what . To learn what happens when someone gets deported and how to hide or talk your way out of it. Open the door. This is ice. Reporter skits like this, acting out ice showing up at the home is one of the ways the church is teaching people how not to get deported. And the scene playing out here in South El Monte has and will continue to repeat itself in many of the archdiocese 300 churches. The churchs training is guided by this 350page document that in english and spanish instructs immigrants of what to do if you encounter ice at home, in public or at work, how to establish a child care plan in case of arrest, and to present authorities with this card explaining the right to remain silent. Jose gomez is the archbishop of los angeles, the man in charge of the nations largest catholic archdiocese. Your archdiocese is going church to church with this document, preparing your family for a meeting with ice. It is destroying the lives of people. Reporter is the church encouraging people to break the law by avoiding ice . No, were not. Were just teaching our people what are the rights in a situation like that. We encourage them to respect the laws. Reporter President Trump ran successfully on a hard line immigration stance, including the deportation of all 11 million undocumented immigrants here. His administration insists the president s executive order on Immigration Enforcement targets those who have committed crimes. You guys go to school here . Yeah. Reporter three days after meeting anna at her churchs training session, she invited me back to South El Monte to meet her undocumented mom and siblings. One of the things driving fears in this community are rumors of roadside checkpoints. The checkpoint is like two street lights from here. Reporter up that way. Yeah. Reporter what does that do . What are people doing or saying . We dont go out. Were kind of in our shells. Reporter you stay home. Yeah. We stay home. Reporter do you see what youre doing here in los angeles as a conflict with the Trump Administration . No, weve been doing this for a long time, before with the Obama Administration and now with the Trump Administration. We want the undocumented people to really be part of our society. Reporter you think the pope would like this . I think so. Im sure he does. I talked to him several times and hes always encouraging me to help people, whatever they need. Jacob soboroff joins me now live. Jacob, good to see you. I know the Trump Administration and the church thinks they are helping people who break the law. But what is the violation that the archdiocese is doing . Reporter the church of l. A. Wants to see violent criminals deported and they are doing this in the image of what the pope said, and the pope said, including a tweet yesterday, he wants to see people build bridges, not walls. Im sure we can guess who the pope was talking about there. Jacob, thank you very much. Well see you on msnbc today, by the way. Yes, sir. Harry smith on a pair of skis pulled by a horse.
