Right now the scene here at the mall remains closed to investigators and police are calling on the public to provide any video, any witness accounts, to help them better understand this horrific shooting that now leaves eight people dead and seven others wounded. Now authorities report the first gunfire came in around 3 30 saturday afternoon. Thats when witnesses say a man dressed in black wearing body armor, looking similar to a Police Officer, began walking through the mall property firing indiscriminately, sending thousands of people running for cover. Authorities tell us a Police Officer that was responding to an unrelated call, heard that gunfire and ran towards the sound, immediately engaging the gunman, shooting and killing him. But in the moments before police arrived, we are told that hundreds did whatever they could inside this property to survive. So we ran to the back, barricaded it with concrete bricks. Right then on the security camera, thank god we went in the back at that time, we saw him walk right by. Masked up, fake Police Outfit on. Reporter and this morning weve learned both the atf and the fbi are assisting local authorities in this very much ongoing investigation. They have yet to share the identity of this gunman or share the weapon he used, but, willie, weve learned of those seven individuals who were wounded, three of whom remain in Critical Condition this morning. President biden has been briefed on the shooting in allen, and the white house is offering its support in the investigation there. Meanwhile, the president is set to meet with leaders on both sides of the aisle this week to discuss the looming crisis over the debt ceiling. With time running out to reach a deal. Good morning. Reporter just this week treasury secretary janet yellen warned in a letter that if the debt ceiling isnt raised soon the u. S. Might not be able to pay its bills as early as june 1st. Soon after the release of that letter news broke that President Biden had invited to the white house the top two republicans in congress for a facetoface meeting. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy and Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnell along with the top two democrats, Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority leader jefferies. They want to raise the debt limit with no strings attached, but the republicans say they want spending cuts attached. In an exclusive interview on Msnbc Stephanie Ruhle questioned the president whether he thinks Speaker Mccarthy is an honest broker. I think hes an honest man. The maga republicans really have put him in a position where in order to stay speaker, he has to agree to things that maybe he believes but are just extreme. So the treasury secretary janet yellen said june 1st is basically the drop dead date when we may not be able to pay our bills if they dont work this out. The white house said were not negotiating on this. This isnt how this works. So how does this end . Well, i think its going to the best Case Scenario right now, willie, it ends in a punt. And here is why i say that. First of all, consider this stat that were going to make a big deal out of this morning. Less than one in four republicans in the house were in congress the last time we had one of these debt ceiling showdowns. What does that mean . When you have three and four that have never been there, dont really accept the premise that this is potentially catastrophic, it means that they may need to feel the pain before they react. So one potential shortterm solution thats out there thats gaining some traction is this idea of a shortterm lift to the debt ceiling and merging it with the budget negotiations in the fall. Now what does that mean . Well, we could have a debt ceiling standoff and a Government Shutdown all coming together at the same time, but it would mean putting this off three or four months. Believe it or not, some democrats and republicans both, because its a facesaving move, because then democrats can say they didnt negotiate on the debt ceiling and republicans can say, hey, they put the debt ceiling with the budget negotiation. Its the only move that might be able to keep both parties at least at the table for another three months. Never a good sign when your best Case Scenario is a punt. Reporter well, the experts ive been speaking to, willie, russia launched in 2021 but with sanctions and the war in ukraine do not have much attraction there. China, meanwhile, is the thing that everyone points to. Theyll somehow sprint ahead of us because they wont have the same regulations we will. The truth is, willie, as of last month china debuted a bunch of regulations including one that holds Companies Legally liable for more or less anything that people go on to do with the ai they create. So this idea that somehow the rest of the world is going to sprint ahead does not seem to be true. Its more the case that especially when it comes to china that theyre, in fact, ahead of us on regulation here in the united states. The whole thing is unregulated, willie. Charlotte, there are worse fates than marrying the king of england. And now, with her own spinoff, Queen Charlotte a bridgerton story. Hello, my children. Weve recreated some bridgerton for you why were sitting with tea and finger sandwiches and old victorian chairs. Very bridgerton. Shonda rhimes is the series creator. The bridgerton fans will gobble it up, a spinoff but a story of Queen Charlotte who was a real person. I was fascinated with the story of Queen Charlotte from the moment we started filming. Shes the beyonce of her day. How did she become the woman we created for the show. Its fiction based on fact n. This world we get to see her indepth in person. Youre not some simpering girl, you are our queen. Theres a lot going on as shes thrust into this world. Its a difficult transition, to say the least. Yeah. Its a world that she doesnt know at all. You add the complication of the fact she doesnt really look like any of the members of society and what that means for her. The 53yearold rhimes was not necessarily destined for her life as tv royalty either. At first i wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to be a lawyer. I wanted to work in politics, all of those things which i finally realized i dont want to do them, i want to write them, because its much more fun to build the world yourself. So i did. Today the prolific show runner, writer and producer oversees the shondaland media empire. No talking unless its medical. Launched in 2005 with greys anatomy. Im afraid of having a happy ending. I wrote a medical show thats not what other people were thinking of as being correct medical shows. It didnt take it too seriously and it wasnt about the patients. It was how the doctors felt about the patients. It was about their lives. I cant believe that were in season 20. Unbelievable. Can you believe that . No. Truly. I really cant. Olivia pope is here. It was definitely an escape, and it was definitely a way of channelling all of my creativity but also all of my insecurities. What i loved most, my parents got it. She wants to play in the pantry, fine. Well let that happen. Im glad you mentioned the pantry, because my favorite production of yours ever is not greys anatomy its canned goods in your pantry. The cans of tuna were soldiers and cans of tomato paste were the aids and big giant cans of yams were the important people. My mom would knock on the door and say i need vegetables. I had to decide who would die so she could make dinner. The lights went on at usc at film school. You graduate. What was the struggle like at the beginning . It was hard. I finished school, tons of opportunity loans, totally broke. 9 11 happened and it caused this, i dont know, reassessment or epiphany of whats really important to me. What do i want to do with my life . If the world ended tomorrow, i would not be satisfied with what i have done. I went home and i did the one thing i had always wanted to do, i adopted a baby and became a parent. Rhimes has three children now, and she says motherhood helped her to pivot from writing movies like crossroads and the princess diaries 2 to making television. I was watching more television and this is where the Character Development is happening. What was it like to get the phone call that greys anatomy had been picked up. I was at home writing in my pajamas and now was at an office with people looking at me to tell them what to do. It was a lot of responsibility. Stressful . It was very stressful. I came into a world i had never worked before. I didnt know the rules. I broke them frequently. So pick me. Choose me. Love me. Starting with greys it was this idea i didnt see any kind of women that i knew on television. I didnt see any women who were fully rounded and three dimensional who got to be selfish, who got to be powerful, who got to be greedy, who got to be loving in the same way that you see male characters doing it. To me i wanted to see people who were like the people i knew. In 2017 rhimes signed an exclusive multiyear Development Deal with netflix worth a reported 100 million. Give me back that money, please. Has it become more difficult as your world, your shondaland, has become so big to keep that impression on each one of them . I think it was harder when i was at a network. Now i got to produce bridgerton. I got to work with the writers and put my stamp on it, on something i hadnt written, which wasnt possible before. And so thats really been an easy part of the job because its so fun. You just keep coming up with ideas. Its kind of amazing. Sometimes you think something is a great idea and it falls flat. Evenly you sometimes have Writers Block . I dont have Writers Block, sometimes i write something and its just bad. No, nobody wants to watch this. That will be a relief to so many writers. Even Shonda Rhimes has bad days. Every writer has bad days. But she has fewer than most. As a career writer, shonda says she is on strike right now in solidarity with her fellow hollywood writers who have been on the picket lines this week.
