Former President Donald Trump took another big step toward the republican president ial nomination on saturday handily beating former South Carolina governor nikki haley in her home state. The former president , who spent very little time campaigning in South Carolina, looks past haley in his victory speech. Instead, turning his fire again on President Biden. Haley says she is not dropping out of the race anytime soon. Well have the latest in a live report from South Carolina and talk to Kristen Welker just ahead. Plus, our sunday focus on the uproar this week over the ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court that frozen human embryos are children. With ivf programs suspended in the state, what is the future of the revolutionary treatment that has brought the gift of life to so many families . Reporter willie, good morning. Trump didnt even mention haley, a sign after four straight wins he and his campaign are eager to pivot to a general election and a faceoff with joe biden in the fall. And i gladly stand up reporter donald trump declaring victory in South Carolina. Wow. That is really something. This was a little sooner than we anticipated, an even bigger win than we anticipated. Reporter the former president largely looking past his last republican opponent, nikki haley, instead, painting a dark picture of a biden presidency he hopes to end in november. Were going to look at joe biden, and were going to look him right in the eye. Hes destroying our country. Were going to say, joe, youre fired. Get out get out, joe youre fired reporter haley vowing to fight on, despite suffering a blowout loss in the sate where she once served as governor. I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, i would continue to run for president. Im not giving up this fight. Reporter earlier on saturday today arguing about a rematch in the fall. How many more times do republicans have to lose that maybe hes the one thats the problem . Reporter the former president creating new controversy with these remarks at a black conservative gala in columbia friday. The mug shot, weve all seen the mug shot, and, you know who embraced it more than anybody else . The black population. Its incredible. Its disgusting but thats what happens when he goes off the teleprompter. Thats the chaos that comes with donald trump. Reporter at polling places across the palmetto state, republicans stood by mr. Trump. I think hes the best man. You look at everything he said hes going to do and he did it. Hes for the American People not for foreigners. Reporter as for haley, shes back on the campaign trail today in michigan which votes on tuesday then starts to work her way across the country to those super tuesday states which vote in early march and could provide the next gut check moment for this primary campaign. As Governor Haley said, she has long promised she was in this for the long haul. She has the money to stay in. She will go through super tuesday at least. What is the rationale after a 20point loss in her home state . Willie, donors are standing by her. She says theres still a vast swath of voters who want to see her stay in, and shes looking at states like michigan, which garrett just mentioned, an open primary state where voters of any Party Affiliation can vote for the candidate of their choosing. Super tuesday, on march 5th, 11 of the 16 states are open or semiopen primaries, willie. That means she can get independent voters, democrats. The challenge there to win a republican nomination, you do need republican voters. So thats where this is incredibly uphill. Her campaign is cleareyed. She was defiant last night. She makes the case, she does better in a general election against joe biden than trump does, so she argues she wants voters to have their say heading through super tuesday. Now, willie, do you know who is watching all of this very closely, democrats. I had a chance to sit down exclusively with california governor gavin newsom, and i asked him, do democrats want haley to drop out of the race so that the general election can officially begin . Here is what he had to say. I dont know why democrats would want her out of our race. Shes one of our better surrogates, defining the opposition of trump effectively, making points im applauding every day about his temperament, his capacity, his unraveling in real time. So thats the view from the democratic side, but, willie, of course, not surprisingly, trump and his supporters have been ramping up their pressure on nikki haley to get out of the race. Again, unless donors start to abandon her, it seems like she is in this for the long haul. Now taking a step back, willie, one more note, nbc news was first to report that aides and allies to former President Trump want him to start pivoting to a general election message, spending less time on his personal grievances and more time on the real issues. Will he do it . Of course that remains to be seen. He is someone who has always gone by his own script, willie. Yeah, theyve tried to pivot many times over the years, and usually pivot back. Despite these repeated air strikes, houthi attacks have only increased in recent days. The attorney general has said that he wont prosecute ivf families or fertility providers and already the state legislature and state lawmakers have filed legislation that would protect ivf treatment. It comes as the leaders of both Political Parties are weighing in. Former President Donald Trump calling on state law makeers to preserve access to the treatment and to expand access. But President Biden is saying that this is the realty that trump created with his efforts to overturn roe v. Wade. The white house now looking at policies and legal challenges that would protect ivf treatment. And despite widespread support for the continuation of these procedures, ivf treatments remain on hold at several clinics across the state. Willie . The acclaimed comedy follows a group of teachers at a school in philadelphia as they work through the daily challenges of americas Public Education system. I love Barbara Howard because she just represents so many teachers that i had who really say, if you dont have them now, you will have wings and you must fly. Our job is to build them up, make them confident. Did you have teachers that you wanted to sort of embody . My auntie carolyn, just an incredible teacher. My dad started out as a music teacher, ended up as a college professor. My gym teacher, who said, run your race. I love that. Being a teacher is being asked to do the impossible year after year. One of the blessings of your show is to just shine a light on what it means to be a teacher in america. Do you feel that . Oh, absolutely. Those are special people. And why we dont give those people the tools that they really need to educate all of our children, i dont understand. And i know where my voice belongs i had never been invited to the emmys before. The first time im invited, i win this is showbiz at its best. The 67yearold ralph grew up the daughter of immigrants, splitting her childhood between new yorks long island and jamaica. What is the first memory you have of performance, i like being on a stage . Lawrence road, christmas concert, and i sang o holy night. I got the solo. And when i heard that applause, goodness gracious. It was like main line, main line, ive got to have it. Applause. But ralphs parents were not so sure about a life in the arts. My mother emigrated from jamaica and would say, be a doctor, be a lawyer, and if you cant do that, then marry one. And i was just, oh, my god, i said i will never be a doctor. I will never be a lawyer. This is not happening in my life. After three flirtations with medicine and law, ralph turned back to theater graduating from rutgers university. At the time she was the youngest female graduate in the schools history. You graduated at 19 and wasted no time with your career because you missed your graduation yes. For . A skippy Peanut Butter commercial. And is it true you still keep skippy in your cabinet . Absolutely, because im grateful. The 35,000 i got paid kept me from waiting tables. She began to land parts in movies and television and on broadway. It wasnt easy, right . It was a mixed bag in some ways. I learned how to use my voice to create a character. My human learning really took a hit because i saw what happened around aids and peoples inhumanity around other human beings. You would be singing and dancing with somebody and they would be fighting for their lives the next day. I would never be the same after living that. After a star turn on broadway, in movies alongside Hollywood Alisters and on moesha ralph struggled to find her place. Where have you been . Where do you suppose . Robert de niro said youre a damn good actress, and thats too bad because hollywood is not looking for the black girl, so youd better climb that mountain and wave the red flag and let them know that you are there. So what has that climb been like all these years . Rough. Its like when you hear them say i came up the rough side of the mountain. For ralph, the road to the mountain top to Abbott Elementary has been long and at times difficult but well worth the climb. All this stuff is rushing toward you. Is it overwhelming at all . Now an effort is under way to save the iconic trees by distributing seeds across the desert, enlisting the help of animals who know the landscape well, camels carrying bags of water, supplies, and joshua tree sprouts across the vast expanse of the desert. But as we drive into the Mojave National preserve its as far as you can see out here all around us devastation. Its such a loss. Reporter over the past three years, two massive fires exploded in this area killing an estimated 2. 5 million joshua trees. At the same time Climate Change is shrinking the range where the surviving plants can live comfortably. These trees really rely on a specific set of conditions and as things get warmer, those conditions get placed into a smaller and smaller area. Reporter fires were once rare in this part of california, and smaller in size, but Research Shows an increase of nonnative grasses in recent decades have helped flames spread more rapidly leading to the mega fires. Its especially distressing because the plants are a keystone species here, a vital life line for other organisms like lizards, insects and rodents. This used to be one of the densest joshua tree populations in the world, but now everywhere you turn, it looks like this, these skeletal trees burnt, charred to a crisp, and it goes on mile after mile after mile. The plant will come out, fall in the hole. Reporter now erin knight is leading an ambitious project to change that. Are you scared that there could be a World Without joshua trees . Oh, totally. Most of these joshua trees burned all the way to the ground, and so once that happens, they cant really come back. These fires are massive. This is 44,000 acres. That doesnt seem huge in the grand scale of seeing million acre fires in other places, but in the desert, thats a lot. Reporter the goal is to plant 4,000 over four years with the help of a team of Good Samaritans from across the country. Among those volunteering anybody over there need a hammer . Reporter 10yearold ansel joshua, yes, named after joshua trees. Thats cute. We came hiking here when i was pregnant with ansel. The site was beautiful with these unique joshua trees. It was aweinspiring. Reporter restoring these trees is not easy as the desert sees higher temperatures and less rain, only 20 of the new ones will survive. It could be decades before theyre grown. Oh, yeah. Were not going to see this in our lifetime being what it was in the past. If one tree survives, that is success. Reporter theyre planting the seeds for future generations. They traveled to the National Institutes of health in maryland for the best treatment available at a time when hiv aids was ravaging a the country. In 1992 7yearold hydeia appeared in a nickelodeon special with Magic Johnson who had Just Announced his own hiv diagnosis. I want people to know we are people. The disease kept hydeia out of school until seventh grade, even as she continued her activism, appearing on oprah and speaking at the 1996 Republican National convention at 12 years old.
