Good morning and welcome to sunday today on this september 10th. Im willie geist. This morning there is a desperate race to find survivors in morocco after a 6. 8 magnitude earthquake struck in the overneat hours on friday killing more than 2,000 people. Those who survived forced to sleep in the streets with their homes and surroundings buildings reduced to rubble. We are live on the scene with the latest. Then, we will turn to a much brighter story here at home as 19yearold american phenom coco gauff wins the u. S. Open in thrilling fashion. We will go oneonone with coco just ahead. Plus, our sunday focus on whats driving the recent uptick in covid cases including a positive test for First Lady Jill Biden. How concerned should we be with a new vaccine on the way as early as this week . Then, our sunday spotlight on the hottest show around as we turn the tables on the host of hot ones. The viral hit that makes celebrities sweat. And later, a new sunday sitdown with the woman of the moment in music, Olivia Rodrigo, on the highly anticipated followup album to the grammy winning debut that made her an International Sensation with a style she developed at a very young age. Do you remember those first songs when you were 12 . Yeah, its so funny. I still have them on my phone. Gosh, i had such perspective. I would write feminist songs about all these people that wronged me or issues that i had. You were in sixth grade. Whats going on . A new sunday sitdown with Olivia Rodrigo, plus, another lifewell lived later in the show. Lets begin with the scene of destruction and despair in morocco after a massive earthquake struck there this weekend. Nbcs raf sanchez has made his way to the citys epicenter. Whats it like there . Reporter good morning. We are in a Mountain Village about 30 miles east of the epicenter, and throughout this village you can see homes that are either completely destroyed or, like the one behind me, are partially collapsed, in danger of total collapse. This village was home to 3,000 people, but local people here tell us some 40 of them were killed on friday night. More than 1 of the population that has lost their lives here, and they are part of a growing National Death toll that has climbed above 2,000. The rescue effort here is fiendishly complicated, the destruction is not concentrated in a single area. It is spread through villages like this and the roads to get here are winding, narrow and treacherous. In some places they are blocked by heavy boulders. Hand by patient hand digging neighbors out from underneath the rubble. One person was rescued in this village yesterday giving hope there may be more survivors still to be found. We are still in the golden 72hour window when it is the best chance to find people alive. Time is running out, though, and this rescue operation gets more desperate by the hour. Willie . Those overhead shots are just breathtaking of the destruction. As you say, lets hope there are survivors to be found and rescued there. Raf sanchez in morocco, thanks so much. Now to a much happier moment. Last night at the u. S. Open in new york 19yearold american coco gauff defeated the soontobe number one ranked player in the world to win the first of what could be many major championships in her budding tennis career. Nbcs Aaron Gilchrist was there, and he spoke with coco after her thrilling win. Aaron, good morning. Reporter hey, willie, good morning. I think its safe to say coco is still on cloud nine. She knew she faced a formidable opponent on the court and would have to be aggressive to win. The overwhelming joy of victory washing over coco gauff, the 19yearold battling her way to her first grand slam victory. I just knew that if i didnt give it my all, i had no shot at winning. Aryna is an incredible player. Reporter the tennis phenom ultimately defeating Aryna Sabalenka after losing the first set in this, their sixth meeting. Sabalenka will be ranked number one in womens tennis, but this championship. Your first win at the u. S. Open, you ran up to your folks. Crazy. Still a surreal moment to hold this trophy and see it so up close and personal. A lot of emotions that i still havent even processed yet. Reporter more than 28,000 people filling Arthur Ashe Stadium chanting cocos name holding their collective breath. Gauff thankful so many came along for her meteoric rise. My whole career but especially in this tournament is something i will never forget. I want like her when i grow up. I hope i can be as good as her when im older. Reporter we saw some young girls here outside watching. Youre a National Role model. Yeah, thats really crazy. I remember being a girl coming to this tournament and watching, and to achieve this dream ive had since i was little, is a moment i am forever grateful pour. Reporter now gauffs name etched in history along with her role model, serena williams. Serena retired a year ago and to carry this trophy means a lot to me. Shes my idol. To have my name on this trophy with hers is a dream ive always dreamed and believed in. Reporter five years in the pros, gauff has six singles title including this major open win, proving she is a power play executing with precision and poison her way to the top. Now as she mentioned, she has been coming to this tournament for years. This video surfaced from 11 years ago with fans commenting about her saying that she was always a star, and now theres proof of that. We should mention, willie, the u. S. Will wrap up this afternoon with the mens final, Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic playing, and that will be a wrap for the u. S. Open this year. That video of coco watching the u. S. Open as a child and now winning it, not so much time has passed since then. She has a very bright future. Aaron gilchrist at the u. S. Open, thanks so much. President biden was among those congratulating coco on saturday. He called the new u. S. Open champ and her parents after that win. The president is on an overseas trip wrapping up the g20 summit in india and arriving in vietnam a short time ago. Nbcs senior White House CorrespondentKelly Odonnell is traveling with the president. Shes in the capital city of hanoi. Kelly, whats the latest there . Reporter good morning, willie. The president is now in hanoi, and this is his first visit here while president with some big expectations that the u. S. And vietnam, led by the communist party, will take steps to formally go closer in this relationship in a way that u. S. Officials said is really an arc of the 50 years since our two nations were at war. Now before he left india, the president and other world leaders, honored a man of peace visiting the memorial site and that was part of the g20 summit. U. S. Officials did not give specifics about the direct conversations he had with other leaders there, because that summit did not have the typical oneonone meetings. But we know and we were able to see the president shook hands with the crown prince of saudi arabia known as mbs, despite past criticism and his concerns about the kingdoms human rights abuses. While he is here in vietnam, the president will also pay a visit to a memorial site that marks the place where the late senator john mccain was captured during the war and held prisoner back all those years ago during the vietnam era. Willie . Of course, one of bidens friends from the senate days as well. Kelly odonnell in hanoi this morning, thanks so much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. It is great to see you, my friend. A big morning for you and an appropriately big interview, an exclusive with california governor gavin newsom, a man who could be a future president ial candidate, but some democrats whispering he should be one this time around perhaps instead of president biden. Lets hear what he told you about that. I think we need to move past this notion that hes not going to run. President biden is going to run and looking forward to getting reelected. Theres been so much wal owing in the last few months and disrespect, but wearing gearing up for the campaign. We look forward to it. You hear these calls privately. What do you tell the donors who are wallowing . Time to move on. Lets go. Chuck, what was your takeaway from that conversation with governor newsom, who some believe has a future beyond this party. You shouldnt read an interview in a transcript. You have to see how they answer a question, watch it. Look, my impression, he is sort of hes determined to show that hes behind the president. That doesnt mean he doesnt want to run, that doesnt mean he wouldnt be running, but, you know, he doesnt sit here and pretend hes not interested in it. Hes simply saying, hey, were rallying around him. I think hes, frankly, sees that hes running. Theres no path to the presidency in challenging a sitting president. But this is a person preparing to run for president. Its just most likely hes running in 2028. He admitted to me hes been reading Ronald Reagan biographies that go back to when he was governor of california. The only governor the last governor of california to become president is reagan. How do you sell california to the country . We had that conversation, too. Thats a tricky thing. Hes trying to learn how reagan did it, and that tells you a lot. I think the reality is here, which is, as far as we all know, biden is running for reelection. Hes in the bullpen, theres no doubt about it. Waiting his turn. There were some polls that showed some weakness for president biden, perhaps amping up calls for others to take a look at it at least. Chuck, it was a big morning and it really is. After almost a decade in the seat where youre sitting right now as the moderator of meet the press, today is the final show for you at meet the press. We thought since you have your sunday mornings off going forward, wed give you something to curl up with, maybe you could watch a little sunday today with your official sunday today mug. I appreciate it. Maybe celebrate the miami win you stayed up late to watch last night. I might get to go to one of these games now. Like thats willie, you and i are a couple of guys who work weekends, right . Thats it. And a lot of people work weekends. Its nice to get your weekend back. We all dream of it. I took the miami victory as a sign, ive turned the page. The last time they were good was before i was on meet the press. I take that as a sign. Lets go. Playoff or bust, go canes. A big win. You started in september of 2014. My goodness, the decade that followed and what you have guided your audience through. A tip of the cap to you. Congratulations on a great run. Cheers. Stay up late and watch those games, my friend. Congrats. Willie, youve been a friend, a pal behind the camera not just in front of it. Thank you, sir. Thank you, chuck. Well look for much more on chucks final edition of meet the press when, as we mentioned, chuck sits down with california governor gavin newsom. Breaking news overnight. Hospitalizations for covid have ticked up in the United States after a couple of quiet summer months. So whats behind the recent spike and how concerned are Public Health officials . Nbcs maggie vespa has our sunday focus. Reporter call it an eerie sense, a pandemic deja vu, as we roll toward our fourth fall with the virus on our radar. Covid numbers are once again rising with big names falling ill. The president was with the first lady yesterday. He will be masking while indoors. Reporter the white house on alert this week after First Lady Jill Biden tested positive monday with mild symptoms. The president later masking up for a medal of honor ceremony and repeatedly testing negative ahead of this weekends g20 summit. I was having neurological symptoms, ringing in my ears. Reporter her hope for a life free of covid dwindling each time numbers rise. It feels cyclical, like i cant avoid it. Reporter the latest cdc data shows a late summer uptick in hospitalizations and deaths linked to covid19. Though its nowhere near peak pandemic levels, experts warn 15 of Covid Patients experience long haul symptoms making covid the third leading neurologic disorder in the u. S. Good morning. Reporter its enough to resurrect familiar arguments over mask mandates with schools in maryland and alabama issuing limited requirements. Experts point out between vaccines and natural immunity, covid is up against an increasingly protected population. On a scale of one to ten, how concerned are you about this current uptick in covid cases . I would put this one at about a four or five. Reporter with the cdc next week set to review who should get this next round of fall boosters, Health Experts warn dont wait, advising people to get all seasonal vaccines including covid boosters and flu shots as soon as possible. Are we at a point where were thinking about this like the flu, like theres going to be seasonal upticks every year . Yes and no. It doesnt quite match the exact timing of the flu. Weve seen cases rise here in the late summer. I think the goal is to get it to the point of the flu where it rises in the fall and winter season and hides out in the summer. But right now in my opinion, i dont think were there yet. And maggie joins me now live. Maggie, good morning. As we saw there, medical experts not worried about a return to the dark days of the pandemic, of course, but cases are up and viewers may be wondering if they still can use some of those covid tests they have stored away. Reporter willie, good morning. The short answer is, yes. Experts say covid tests do have expiration dates and the tests could be expired, but, this is important, a lot of those, even if theyre expired, experts say still work. The fda actually has a page on their website that lists tests by brand and by lot number. And in a lot of those cases theyve extended expiration dates. So if yours is extended, it should, experts say, still be good. On top of that, they say even though your old covid tests werent made with the latest strains of the virus in mind, they add existing tests are good for all current variants that we know of at this point, so they say right now there is no need to run out and buy 2023specific models. Willie . All right. Thats good information and more good news, we think, coming in the next couple of days with fda approval of a new booster. Maggie, thanks so much. Good to see you. The death toll continues to rise in the aftermath of that deadly 6. 8 earthquake in morocco, and the impacts are being felt a world away here in the bay area. We visited several moroccan restaurants in San Francisco. People there struggled to reach their loved ones because of telephone and power outages. Michelin star chef lalu is from there. He says he was lucky and grateful to learn his family is okay, but he, like many others, is afraid the toll of this quake may be far greater as the days pass. This is dense fog covering San Francisco. I promise you right there, kira, the transamerica building is being eaten up by that dense fog this morning. We are waking up under a lot of cloud cover in the south bay. A little chillier start to the morning and the cloud cover limiting the visibility. Check out napa, around a quarter of a mile visibility. Half a mile in napa. Be careful if you have to head out. We are looking at the fog, deps out towards Half Moon Bay as you go up 101. Currently right now, 48 in sonoma. So a chilly start. 54 in livermore for the start of our sunday and 58 in palo alto. As we go through the day today, you might have noticed yesterday from the south bay, down into the central part of the state, more of that moisture continues to impact places along the Central Coast here, definitely near l. A. , and into palm springs. More of that activity will continue on for the day, and also pushing on to our east. I wanted to get this in there. If you do have any sunday plans that take you out to the coastline, with all that moisture and energy, it is causing the wave heights to be a little higher. Well talk about not only what is going on at the coastline, but all of the forecast coming up at 7 00. Cinthia, thank you. Also coming up at 7 00 this morning, it is back to school and flu season. So much faster bloodsucker, dream crusher, bleeding me dry like a vampire that is Olivia Rodrigo performing the number one single vampire off of her new album guts for a massive audience on our today plaza at rockefeller plaza. Rodrigos first album is a tough act to follow, to put it mildly. Sour debuted in 2021 at number one and broke a spotify streaming record for a female artist while going platinum three times over and earning the title of Rolling Stones album of the year. Still a 17yearold Senior Living at home when drivers license was released, rodrigo graduated overnight from young disney actor to International Pop star. Olivia and i got together on friday for a sunday sitdown just minutes after she stepped off that stage. The party is just Getting Started for Olivia Rodrigo as she celebrates the release of her sophomore album. Congratulations on release day. Thank you so much. Yeah, its been a very exciting few hours. You draw quite a crowd, my friend. Shes calling it guts. These are my guts rings. And guts means what to you in the context of this album . It means a few things. It means courage. It means trusting your gut. I like spilling your guts, too. Theres some that have on this album. I feel every song ive ever written is just me spilling my guts a little bit. Just 20 years old the singing, songwriting phenom, has a talent for turning angst and heartbreak into hits. Well good for you when youre sitting down spilling your guts in front of a piano, do you ever have any hesitation of, ooh, maybe i shouldnt go this far, i shouldnt tell this one . Yes. In the moment when im writing a song, i try not to censor myself too much or think about what people on the internet are going to say about it. Someone tells me one more time enjoy your youth people have had a lot to say about rodrigos music ever since she exploded onto the scene with her grammy winning debut album sour. I wish i could disappear its brutal out here Rolling Stone called sour a greatest hits album on her first try, highlighted by the fivetime platinum drivers license. I got my drivers license last week a poignant battle on achieving a milestone with a bridge embraced by tiktok. And saturday night live. I was thinking back to january of 2021 when drivers license came out. Youre still a senior in high school, and then you wake up one morning and everyone knows your name. Whats going through your mind . A healthy level of disassociation goes a long way, i think. You just cant really read into all of that too much. You have to put your horse blinders on and focus on what you can control. You have such a maturity in your songs about things like heartbreak and relationships. On sour you were 16, 17 years old writing these sort of sophisticated songs that im not sure most teenagers have thought through in that way or can articulate in the way that you have. Thanks. I mean, ive been writing songs since i could talk. Ive always been doing it, written so many bad songs. Got a lot of practice. I really believe that really good songs kind of dont come from you. They kind of come through you. Its kind of like something else. Its like a magical thing. Car ride to malibu the magic began in Southern California where rodrigo grew up with parents who played alanis more set, gwen stefani and the white stripes in the house. Rodrigo first sat down at the piano at 7. By 12, she was writing songs. She did some acting, too, but music just a city boy was her first love. Do you remember those first songs when you were 12 . Its so funny. I still have them on my phone. Gosh, i was so angsty and had such perspective, write feminine songs about people who wronged me and issues i had. Youre in sixth grade. Whats going on . You didnt cheat but youre still a traitor rodrigo since has sharpened the songwriting around that angst and proven herself a sharp businesswoman as well when she signed her first record deal at just 17, she negotiated for ownership of the master recordings of her music. The label agreed, perhaps underestimating her potential. How did you have the instinct to do that, because it has paid off in a way that other artists have struggled with . I think that ive been really lucky to be surrounded by people who really look after me. I really always wanted to have total Creative Control over everything that i do. Its just so freeing to be able to say whatever the you want, express how you feel, however you want, and be in control of your life and career. I hate to give the satisfaction on guts rodrigo goes full pop punk. With vampire why is it important to not talk publicly about who or what its about . Explanation is never good for art. Why would i pigeonhole a song about being this one thing in my life when everyone has their own interpretation . It makes me feel less alone when i write about a specific instance i felt this really strong way and then i look out into the crowd and i see some girl who felt the exact same way, it makes me realize that were all so much more alike than we are different. She has grown up during this whirlwind couple of years, but shes still having fun. The first album was very much about heartbreak, and i think this time around i was just more thinking about the pressures of young adulthood and the growing pains that come along with just turning 20. People have called you the voice of your generation. Theyve said that you have captured what it means to be your age or close to your age in this moment in time. Oh, my gosh, its so crazy. Youre just telling your own story, but it just so happens to reflect what a lot of people are going through. All i can do is be myself and write songs i like. And i think the fact people gravitate towards them is amazing. Im pretty when i cry and, boy, do they gravitate. Olivias new album guts is available now wherever you get your music. Our thanks to our friends at the peacock lounge inside Rockefeller Center for hosting our conversation. Our first high goes to the high level diplomatic meeting this week held in the booth of a mcdonalds. It wasnt exactly yalta but secretary of state blinken and Ukrainian Foreign minister got together at a mcds in kyiv. When i was a student my best was actually the go to. Im sure that was a rare, rare very rare occurrence. But i would go to mcdonalds and buy a double cheese berger, big coke and that would be my hangover breakfast. That never happened to me, so never happened to you, sure, secretary. Sure. Over some fries and an apple pie stating the medical fact that a double cheese berger and large coke will cure what ails you after a big night. Also would have accepted the big mac combo meal. Blinken traveled to show the United States ongoing support for the country in its war with russia. Our first low goes to one attempt that fell incomplete this week for duke quarterback riley leonard. Leonard led the blue devils to an upset win over ninth ranked clemson in their first game of the College Football season. With the campus in a state of jubilation, riley figured hes take a shot at a special request to one of his professors. Professor taylor, if youre seeing this, please let me turn in my homework late because its due tonight i think at 12 00. It may already be 12 00. A homework extension seems reasonable. It was dukes first win over a top ten team since 1989. What do you say, professor taylor . Hey, riley, great game last night. Man, it was so exciting. Congratulations to you and all your teammates. But, you know, Wesley Williams and the other linemen who were in the class, they said they prepared ahead and did it ahead of time. So why didnt the quarterback . So, no way, man. No extension. No way, man. Keeping those duke academic standards high. Professor taylor said later riley is a very good student and hell be just fine in the class even turning in that homework late. Our final low to the contractor who saves you a few bucks on the renovation but takes a whole bunch of shortcuts to do it. In this case the shortcut went right through the great wall of china, one of the seven wonders of the world. The great wall was built over the course of centuries by chinas great dynasties and now stretches more than 13,000 miles across the countrys northern border. Well, a couple of construction workers needed a shorter path to the other side while they were doing some work, so they just blasted through the World Heritage site with an excavator and built themselves a dirt road. The pair were arrested by chinese authorities who said they had done irreversible damage to the wall that is, of course, a source of Great National pride.
