billion in cuts that schools have endured over the last couple of years. parents, teachers, and administrators are once again bracing for even tougher times. >> please make sure you are paying attention. all eyes on me. >> reporter: kimberly lynch is doing her best to keep her students focused though her class has grown to 34 students this year while the amount of resources keeps shrinking. she's committed to her kids. >> we're doing the best we can with what we have. what's frustrating is they could have so many more. >> we're cutting schools. >> reporter: the state schoolchildren will once again take a hit as lawmakers work to close as $18 billion budget gap. they plan to cut $3 billion from education funding. >> legislator or governor gets to close their door and call it a day. i open my door and i have children coming to me with needs. >> reporter: the middle school principal says she's had to get very creative over the last few years to make up for the drastic funding cuts. the district laid off 16 of her teachers in the past three years. she says lawmakers in sacramento just don't get it. >> we're not building with widgets and trucks. we're talking human beings here who are going shape our world and we need to take care of the children and leave the funding in the schools so we can be held accountable as we're doing. >> come to my classroom and explain to these children why you took money and resources from them and say it's going to be okay. >> reporter: lynch says her kids are already suffering with class size growing she simply can't give them the attention they deserve. >> reporter: try to have that one-on-one attention with students is very difficult. no student goes without my attention but they get less of it. that's an unfortunate thing. >> reporter: with more cuts likely on the way, she's gearing up to do even more with less. >> i'm disappointed. i am frustrated. i get angry. but i will not allow that to affect how i teach in my classroom. >> and again the state legislature could vote as early as tomorrow. in fact, it's expected to on this budget proposal. our political analyst will join news a few minutes to talk about the budget and what it means for california if in fact it passes. and today a san francisco assemblyman talked about his cannabis bill. he held a news conference on the steps of the state building in san francisco to talk about the law he proposes to regulate the pot trade if prop 19 clears voters. californians 21 and older could possess up to one ounce of marijuana for personal use. the family of oscar grant is up set tonight. the grant family aired their complaints at oakland city hall calling it another attempt by the defense to justify mehserle's actions. he was convicted of killing grant in 2009. mehserle testified that he accidentally grabbed his re revolver instead of his stun gun. he wants the verdict overturned because the jury didn't hear about a kentucky case in which a police officer did the exact same thing. >> this is not an accident. mehserle knew where his gun was and where his taser was and he chose to utilize his gun. this is another attempt by the defense to push out sentencing and elongate the case. >> mehserle is scheduled to be in court for sentencing on november 5th which is likely when a motion for a new trial will be heard. tonight fremont police say they have their man. and now they want to get him back to the bay area to have him prosecuted. 36-year-old parolee alexander diaz was taken into custody outside a home under surveillance. they believe diaz purposely struck a motorcycle officer as he was driving a stolen van in fremont on monday morning. the officer is expected to be released from the hospital later this week. the company that revolutionized the way we searched internet is setting its sights on television. scott budman joins us now. should i get my resume tape ready for google? >> you have two groups. independents and latinos. that's where it starts and ends. independents are always the last to break because they have the fewest ties and fewest loyalties to any political party. latinos because whitman worked hard to cut into that latino block. she needs a good chunk of those folks. we don't know the extent to which this immigration issue completely recalibrates the entire redistribution of votes in a block that might be 20% of the entire vote. >> we know that whitman has plenty of money and jerry brown has been smart about his money. he has $20 million left or so. that money could well go into a turn out the vote effort come november 2nd. that really is the key for him, isn't it? >> turnout is more critical for democrats. republicans particularly whitman will walk her campaign with money. brown must walk his campaign with feet. that means getting out union voters and others who may come out if they can be convinced. turnout, turnout, turnout. the three most important things to worry about. >> all right. on the subject of money, the state budget finally unveiled today. did you see any surprises in it? the state legislature scheduled to vote tomorrow. do you think this is going to happen or will we see more of what we saw in years past? >> a couple assumptions about revenue coming in. they think they'll get some from the federal government. schools suffered. the poor did not suffer as much. here's the deal. the big five as we call them, governor and four leaders, they made up their minds. okay. will they convince everybody else in the legislature? and in her last year at ebay, whitman paid herself $120 million right before the company laid off 10% of it's workers. we're choosing a governor, shouldn't character matter? hello, everybody. welcome to giants fever live. we're coming to you live from at&t park. any time we show you it's batting practice, that means something big is happening. the giants on the field right now. they just took the field about five minutes ago. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm raj mathai. we haven't done this in about seven years. we're glad to be back because the giants are back. we have a lot going on in the next 30 minutes. game one of this divisional series against the braves begins 24 hours from right now. okay. so our bullet points of what's coming up in the next 30 minutes, the playoff roster. everyone asking who will be on the roster and who will be off the roster. we have answers. bruce bochy addressing the media a short while ago. we'll check in with freddy sanchez and we'll check in with j.t. snowe and tim hudson. tim hudson of the braves will join us and j.t. snowe who is still a giants special assistant ant part of the giants last playoff run. we start with our headlines. tim lincecum obviously is the headline with the giants and one of the headliners in the country. lincecum, giants biggest star, and this is his first taste of the playoffs even with the smoking ball. comes as starting pitcher follow tomorrow night's game one. he loves the spotlight. rock star status along with his dog. we'll hear from lincecum in just a moment. the braves are here. they arrived at sfo yesterday and late this afternoon they got here to the ballpark. historically they don't do well here. the braves are 7-17 in san francisco since 2003. this season they have lost two of their three games here. and not just here in the bay area. playoff games across the country. we had a no-hitter. how about this? roy halladay of the philadelphia phillies. pitched a perfect game early this season. a no-hitter against dusty baker and the cincinnati reds. only the second time in baseball history that a pitcher has thrown a no-hitter. don larson did it in the 1950s in the world series. roy halladay, a no-hitter in his first playoff game as philadelphia phillies beat the cincinnati reds in game one of their series. you never know what could happen here with tim lincecum. okay. what is happening now? the giants are getting ready for some batting practice. tomorrow it's a rare start time. 6:30 p.m. 6:37 to be exact. it's different because the shadows here in san francisco half the field will be in sunlight and half the field will be in the shade. the giants trying to adjust that. the braves took batting practice about 90 minutes ago. it's going to start with tim lincecum who met with the media just a short while ago. let's take a look at lincecum. >> i went through a little more of a hectic period in my career. obviously that rough month made me want to turn things around and just do something different and between then just changing my in between starts routine. going a little bit harder. a little bit more conditioning. but, yeah, i guess if that's one thing you want to look to, that's it. >> he's not just a fastball/curveball guy. good change-up. that's a big pitch. he throws a slider. now he has four pitches he'll throw any time and i think he's changed a little bit. he doesn't try to power his way through hitters as much as he used to and go for strikeouts. >> one of the most compelling story lines not just tim lincecum in game one tomorrow night against derek lowe of the atlantic braves, it is who is on the roster for the postseason and who will be off of the roster. b barry zito said this comes with the territory. for zito it's most likely he will not be on the playoff roster for round one. the deadline to set the rofter is tomorrow morning. we'll know officially but once again it's likely he will not be in round one roster. zito is the only pitcher in the giants starting rotation with playoff experience. six appearances in the postseason with the as and biggest performance in the playoffs when he beat the twins ace 3-2 in 2006. he has a 4-3 playoff record. nowadays his numbers are ugly. he hasn't won a road game since five months ago. his salary, well, this is a big talking point for giants fans. not just zito. the giants three most expensive players will not be in the starting lineup. barry zito you see the numbers there. close to 19 million. aaron will not be on there and edgar renteria you see at $10 million. we're in the braves dugout. tim hudson, you look familiar like you have lived in the bay area for a while. >> i've been known to roam these parts. >> welcome back to the bay area. are you excited? obviously you're excited about the series. you guys are the underdog according to the national press coming into the series. >> it's great to be back in the bay area. spent a lot of great times here. i'm excited to be here. i feel like our club has a good chance to win this series even though we are probably underdogs. we've got a lot of injuries we dealt with toward the end of the year. this team has a lot of heart and guts and that's a big reason we're here. >> all of those years with barry zito and a chance he'll be off the playoff roster. you're buddies with him. any advice at this point? >> keep your head up, man. it's one of those things where you can't really control what decisions a team makes. all you can control is what you do and your preparation and barry is great teammate. i'm sure he's supporting his teammate and he's a great guy and whether he's on the playoff roster in the dugout he'll pull for his club and try to do the best thing for them. >> i don't want the politically correct answer here. the batter on the giants, the hitter that's the most challenging you might fear the most? >> you know, they are all pretty challenging. you know, the young kid they have. buster posy has made a big splash this year and obviously he's rookie of the year talks and he's a great young player. he's a lot of fun to watch from afar. we'll do everything we can to keep him from hurting us. >> last time i talked with you you had a normal california accent. now you have a twang. what's happening here? >> back to my roots. >> good luck this series. nice to see you again. >> that would be the black eyed peas here. they are working the clubhouse party on sunday. sanchez proves that he's clearly the best dancer on this team. all of this really nice award for a guy that has never tasted the postseason in his long career and a guy who spent much of his childhood in a doctor's office. let's bring in lauren banky. >> freddy sanchez waited his entire career to make it to the postseason and now he's finally there. but for sanchez and his family, the journey to the bigs is not where this story began. his baseball career could have been over years before it even began. >> runners go. swing and bouncing ball into right field. base hit. here comes sanchez. >> you would never know it by the way he sprints around the bases or snares line drives off an opponents' bat but when he was born, a doctor told his mother he would never walk. >> i was born with a club foot and my left foot was pigeon toed. i had to wear the casting and kind of like a forest gump thing. >> he wore a cast until he was 2 years old with corrective surgery done at 13 months. >> i remember very little. i just hear stories. >> stories like the one where his mother took her young son to the doctor three to four times a week on a city bus through downtown los angeles for two years. >> the appreciation that i have for what she went through and my dad went through, you know, can't put into words. >> his right leg is shorter than his left and his calf muscles aren't as developed. >> i never thought about it through the minor leagues or college or high school. i never thought about it at all. this isn't what defines me obviously or my defining moment to get here was just glad that i'm here and grateful for everything that i have. >> at at&t park, lauren banky, nbc bay area sports. >> should you be stretching or are you done with your playing career?
