water right now because of massive flooding there. the death toll from the floods of pakistan is considered relatively low. 1,500 people have died, but as many as 20 million people are homeless tonight. meanwhile, thousands of pakistani-americans who live right here in the bay area, are worried about what's happening in their homeland. nbc bay area's monty francis is in san francisco with the story for us. monty? >> reporter: diane, it's estimated, there are 28,000 pakistani-americans who live here in the bay area. many of them have family in pakistan, who are dealing with this crisis firsthand. >> reporter: after surveying the flood damage in pakistan and witnessing the devastation up close, u.n. secretary-general ban ki-moon says he's never seen anything like it. >> to owe the world economy to speed up their assistance to pakistani people. >> reporter: on top of the 1,500 deaths in the estimates 20 million people who've become homeless since the floods began two weeks ago, now there are concerns of the spread of diseases from unclean drinking water such as chlora. he has friends and family members in pakistan who've lost their homes. >> they have no roof. they have no water. they could not even recognize where their house was standing. >> reporter: in milpitas a group of young muslims gathtoerpd pray and raise money for flood relief. mohammed akhtar shaw says several local mosques including one in richmond and three in san francisco are also collecting money and supplies to help flood victims. he said the images of the devastation are difficult to look at. >> you know, i almost stopped myself from crying many time when i saw those picture and i heard the news. >> reporter: the largest single response to the crisis has come from the united states military, the white house says the relief efforts are a top priority. in part, because pakistan is a key ally in the fight against al qaeda. some political analysts say those efforts could improve the united states' image among pakistanis. and mohammed akhtar says so far only collected about $2,000 locally to help out with relief efforts so if you'd like to help, you can contact his organization, debate will take center stage this week, gay marriages are set to resume in california on wednesday afternoon. that is, unless the ninth circuit court of appeals, or the united states supreme court, steps in to stop them. and one of the most interesting players in this debate has been governor arnold schwarzenegger. >> reporter: arnold schwarzenegger won the office of governor in 2003 and a few months later he was thrown directly into the middle of the gay marriage debate and although supported gay rights and civilian unions, heads clear changed over the years. issuing gay licenses back in 2004. >> san francisco the license of marriage for same-sex, the next city who hands out licenses for assault weapons and someone else hands out licenses for selling drugs. >> reporter: then in 2005, he told chris matthews on "hardball" that, quote, i don't believe in gay marriage. but by 2008 when i interviewed him on the day the state supreme court struck down the ban on gay marriage, he said he supported the court's right to make that decision, but clearly did not want to elaborate. >> i don't have a problem with it. i'm against it but i have no problem with it. >> reporter: so you're against it smi it. >> i have no problem with it. >> reporter: are you for or against gay marriage. >> i have no problem with it. >> reporter: you won't answer the question. >> i have no problem with it. >> reporter: a few months later voters passed proposition 8 amending the constitution to ban same-sex naerj california. the republican governor did not support prop 8 but wasn't until judge vaughn walker's decision this month legalizing gay marriage that the governor publicly changed his opinion. saying judge walker's decision, quote, affirms the full legal protections and safeguards i believe everyone deserves. at the same time it provides an opportunity for all californians to consider our history of leading the way to the future and our growing reputation of treating all people and their relationships with equal respect and dignity. also interesting to note that this landmark case that could end in front of the united states supreme court is called perry versus schwarzenegger. and although the governor was named as the defendant, he refused to argue in favor of proposition 8. we have new video tonight of just how close people were to to a racetrack at a southern california event where eight people were killed. fans were just a few feet from the track at the race known as the california 200. and just 12 minutes into the race the driver of a modified ford ranger came barreling over a jump called the rock pile and slammed right into the crowd. >> came up and like caught air and got a little sideways and i seen people like scrambling at that point and as soon as they hit it rolled right top and it just hit people and people flew and just went like all kinds of directions. people were scattering, running, trying to help people. >> the driver was not hurt in the crash. but could had been injured in the aftermath. witnesses say he ended up running from the crash scene when some people started throwing rocks at him. today he posted a message on his facebook account offering prayers for the victims. president obama visited the gulf coast this weekend trying to promote tourism but the controversy over a proposed in mosque in new york city overshadowed his trip. slated to be built near ground zero. then yesterday he saucened his stance a bit, saying he wasn't endorsing the construction of the mosque, but merely comme commenting on freedom of religion. the victim's families of september 11th had mixed feelings about the proposed mosque. >> i am offended by it and more than a little angry that they have seen how upset people have become and they still persist in proposing the building of this mosque. >> we the people, the average citizens, start restricting somebody's ability to worship where they want to worship, what does that say about our country as a whole? >> polls show that two-thirds of americans oppose the mosque location. san francisco coroner's office has identified the bicyclist killed in a hit and run. the victim was a 21-year-old tour frist germany. the driver left the scene friday night near mace onic avenue on turk street. able to find the suspect a few weeks away. the 38-year-old man was represented 'booked on vehicular manslaughter charges. by horrible coincidence another german motorcyclist was killed in san francisco. a 50-year-old woman from germany was shot and killed when she was hit by a stray bullet. in san francisco tonight, hundreds of people attended a fund-raiser to help raise funds for aids research. 89-year-old actress and san francisco native carol channing was among the stars at tonight's concert and silent auction. raise awareness while they were at it. >> there's a lot of people that don't have the resources to get the medication, you know the people who need it most are the ones who have the hardest time get telling and this is trying to create awareness as well as the funds to make sure that they have the services they need. >> the money from tonight's 16th annual models and celebrities are everywhere. >> you could be going on a website that's not even related to body image and have an ad of a woman who is 100 pounds, it's everywhere. >> reporter: but that's just the tip of the iceberg. the internet has become host to a social network of people with eating disorders. they find each other online, share diet secrets and pledge to support one another on a dangerous quest. >> if i had found some kind of online group of girls that are going through the same exact thing, you kind of feed off of each other. >> reporter: dunton struggled with an eating disorder when she was at scline school in oakland. made it easier for the anorexia to progress. >> i knew girls who were like, let's get skinny together. we're going to lose a lot of weight. we're going to stop eating. >> reporter: when that kind of mentality goes viral the ramifications are huge. >> when people have the internet have a lot of access to the information. >> reporter: sees a lot of patients going to pro ana reckics websites. >> when they go on one of these sites they get into a community where people are saying, this is good that you do this. it's okay to have a life choice. they're so sick, there really is no sick when you have anorexia. >> reporter: dunton knows what that's like. she says the anorexia controlled her life. she had lied to her family and isolated herself from her friends. >> i was pretty manipulative about it. >> reporter: says it's up to parents to be aware that these signs do exist and could lure in girls who don't intend on developing an eating disorder. >> unfortunately, girls as young as 6 are going on the ano diet. >> if you don't eat and one of those communities and you stop eating and you keep going and going you die. >> reporter: but even as numbers lead to death, the sites continue it attract new ones every day. laura garcia-cannon, nbc news. childhood obesity rates in california have fallen over the past decade for some children but not for all. researchers at uc san francisco reviewed the medical records of more than 8 million students in middle school in california. obesity rates peaked in 2005 and started to decline -- continue to decline among however among african-american boys and girls and american indian girls. it's that time of year again the san francisco school districts head back to class tomorrow morning. victims allegedly found a new photo of hubs on her son's cell phone. caltrain riders should be prepared for serious cuts to make up for the transit agency's budget shortfall. caltrain will start holding community meetings to get public comment over new proposals which include ending all weekend trains, cutting early morning or late evening trains, ending service south of san jose, increasing fares by about 25 cents each way and increasing the cost of monthly passes and parking fees. the meetings by the way will take place at caltrain stations in san francisco, san jose, san kacarlos on thursday. we're checking out weather here and still in this weird pattern where it will not warm up, is it. >> warming up more than we are but not too bad for the next day or two and then it will cool down. a live look at transamerica right now in downtown san francisco. there are some clouds out there but not too bad. and it's going to be pretty cloudy tomorrow morning as well. but things are going to be getting better for a day or two before they cool off again and hopefully next week things will warm up once again. let's take a look at the numbers right now. we're in the 50s, we're about 55 in san francisco. 58 in oakland. 59 in yos, so things are a little bit cool. but not as cool as they had been the last couple of days. now the wind speed north very bad at all, barely a breeze. we're not much -- we're not even above 10 miles per hour. things have calmed down in the last hour so it's really not too bad and quiet calm. take a look at our satellite picture, not much moisture here. to the west they're seeing some over by lake tahoe and novato. a bigger look at our satellite picture, are there some low pressure systems that are heading our way. one behind the other that will be bringing cooler air, but not before it let's us have a couple of more warm days. now monday and tuesday, we'll still have some 80s around and in the inland area. there is going to be some fog along the coast, but things will be clearing as the day goes on. so you know, next two days are going to be the best days of the week, most likely. we're still below average temperatures where we should be and tomorrow planning your day 8:00 in the morning we're in the 50s both inland and along the coast. when we hit noon we'll be at 70 inland. 65 along the coast. which is warmer than it was last week. so we shouldn't have much to complain about. by 5:00 we're 83. mid 80s inland and 60 along the coast. and we take a look at the forecast, well we've got a mixed bag. we're 60s in the coastal areas. we're mainly 70s, san francisco just getting to 64. oakland 69, and san jose still below-average temperatures. we should be at 82 tomorrow, we'll be at 77 but it will be bright and sunny and pleasantly warm. let's take a look at our 7-day forecast. there's a couple of more days of 80s in there, mid 60s for the next two and then things are going down again. diane, i don't know, we keep talking about summertime temperature it's. >> it's weird. >> in mid-august, kids are starting school. >> i know. >> everything is a little crazy right now. >> it doesn't make any sense and you
