A massive storm system over the center of the country brought misery to parts of 16 states this weekend. Late word tonight at least 12 now dead as a result of those storms. Rain and floods in the Mississippi River valley, tornadoes to the south, even blizzard conditions in parts of kansas. In texas, communities are mourning, and the damage from yesterdays storms is extensive. And today, another outbreak of at least 11 tornadoes across mississippi and alabama. The radar map shows the threat of tornadoes now moving east with another round of Severe Weather expected tomorrow in parts of pennsylvania and upstate new york. Our team is covering the latest from the region this evening. We begin with Gabe Gutierrez outside dallas. Gabe . Reporter kate, good evening. Authorities here spent the day urgently searching for more victims. Thousands of people are still without power. And as we take a live look from the air, you can see the mangled debris. Incredibly, everyone inside this event venue survived, but if the tornado had struck just an hour later, this building would have been packed with High School Students. In east texas, the wide path of destruction stretches for 35 miles in Van Zandt County alone. In the small town of canton, at least four people were killed. More than 50 were hurt. I dont know how we got out of the house. Reporter Larry Birdsong and his wife barely survived, huddled in a hallway, as their home collapsed around them. Their daughter found them among the debris. My only concern is that they were okay. Everything else can be replaced. Its just material stuff. Got out of there just in time. Reporter the National Weather says there service says there were four tornadoes that sliced through several counties. Now is the time for us texans to come together and help our fellow texans rebuild their lives. Holy cow. Look at this thing reporter the terrifying impact right before nightfall. It wiped out the power lines. Power lines are gone. Reporter vehicles spun off the highway. This car dealership torn apart, thousands left without power, firefighters scrambling from house to house to search for victims. It just happened really fast. I dont even really remember much except just watching the walls of the house fall off and everything around me being gone. Reporter today, first light revealed the devastation. Were just grateful that we still have a house left and were grateful that we have our life. Reporter you were the deejay here. Yes. Reporter chris ingram was among those trapped in this barn. I could hear the roar. Reporter in the next few minutes, at least 70 High School Students had been expected here for their prom. If this had happened an hour later, this whole thing would have been packed with kids. Yeah, it wouldnt have turned out the way it did. Reporter tonight, what was lost here seems overwhelming. The weekend flooding has taken a deadly turn in the midwest and south, blamed for at least seven deaths. Among them, two children in hinesville, arkansas, a 4yearold boy and his 18monthold sister, both swept away after getting stranded with their mother in a car. We need to get out here and find them. Its been a lot of people from the Community Come together to help this family out and thats what were out here doing. Reporter the rescue mission called off this afternoon. Now a recovery, as authorities see no way the two Young Children could have survived the rushing water. In nearby springdale, floodwaters took the life of a 10yearold girl. The storm system wreaking havoc in missouri, washing out bridges, turning roads into rivers, and flooding homes. The states governor now bringing in the national guard. Some of the flooding we are seeing in parts of missouri has surpassed historic levels. There are certain places that have seen water levels several feet higher than any time in missouris recorded history. Reporter in branson, missouri, it was neighbor helping neighbor, filling sandbags, hoping to alleviate a worstcase scenario in the tourist mecca. The power of water is something that people underestimate, and so, it is scary, you know when its taking these peoples homes. Reporter the army corps of engineers opening up the gates at Table Rock Dam near branson, hoping to lower the rising lake level there. The lakes are full, and so, therefore, the corps managing that water to pass through the white river system. Reporter more rain is expected this week. Were telling them to be over prepared and underwhelmed. Reporter here in arkansas, meanwhile, the search continues for the bodies of those two missing children. Today he spoke out on rising tensions with north korea and guaranteed the new gop plan to replace obamacare will cover preexisting conditions. In a phone call last night, mr. Trump invited him to visit the white house. Since duterte took office last year, thousands have died after he encouraged police and others to kill drug dealers and users in his country. The timing of his visit to washington has not been announced. While donald trump, the president , says hes focusing on his white house duties, trump the businessman recently suffered a legal loss. Over the years, hundreds of contractors have accused mr. Trump of failing to pay them, but now one business is being paid back to the tune of more than 300,000. Nbcs Kerry Sanders has those details. Counties, including a victim crossing the street in whittier, a cartocar assault nearby, and an attack in la merida, where a man was killed. Kind of scary to think if i were driving a mile an hour slower or they were driving a little bit faster, that definitely would have ended up in my neck. Reporter Police Say Two shooting victims, a man and a woman, were taken into custody after being found with another stolen car. As it turns out, they matched the description of the earlier shooting suspects in the whittier area. Reporter at this point, the Sheriffs Department says it does not have a motive in this case, although the suspects appear to have chosen their victims at random. The couple that is being questioned continues to be so.
