Now to a case that could have implications for the election in another key state, a swing state, North Carolina, where today one of the nations toughest voter id laws was thrown out. A federal court said the law was designed to make it harder for africanamericans to vote. Our justice correspondent Pete Williams takes us inside the case. Reporter voters in North Carolina will not have to show any kind of photo id at the polls, the result of a federal Appeals Court today striking down the states voting law passed in 2013. In a blistering decision, the court said the state legislature explicitly set out to discover what kind of accommodations minority voters use most often and then roll back and eliminate them. The court said the restrictions target africanamericans with almost surgical precision. Using race as a proxy for party may be an effective way to win an election it said but that constitutes discriminatory purpose. Were thrilled, we think this is a huge win for voters. This is an effort to overthrow the will of the people on voter id and ballot security and it is led by the democrats. Reporter but todays ruling said the state failed to identify even a single case of inperson voter fraud in North Carolina. The law also cut early voting by a week, ended sameday registration and stopped a program to let 17yearolds preregister, all now struck down. In the past two weeks, federal courts have now rolled back voter id and other voter restrictions in North Carolina, wisconsin and texas. These rulings could be appealed to the Supreme Court but the closer it gets to election day, the less likely the justices are to step in and rule again. Pete williams, nbc news at the Supreme Court. Two suspects are now in custody in san diego after one Police Officer was fatally shot and another one was badly injured. Officer jonathan deguzman, a married father of two was killed. One suspect who also had gunshot wounds was caught near the scene, the other was arrested at a home in a standoff not far away. Sources say this may be gang related, and theres no indication that the officers were specifically targeted. In michigan, six additional state workers Face Criminal Charges in the city of flints toxic water crisis. They are all health and environmental employees accused of hiding data on unsafe lead levels. One week before the start of the summer olympics the athletes are there preparing and our team has made their way there as well, amid lingering concerns about whats in the water. The view from just 200 feet above this city is spectacular, as brazil races to put on the final touches here just one week before opening ceremonies. We soared over olympic park last year, and when we were on the ground 12 months ago, there were questions, would they be done in time here . Today we know the answer, the venues are all finished, athletes are training in many of them today. There are still some concerns over Water Quality conditions in the bay where many events like sailing will take place. But olympic officials tell us the water is being tested every day and theres no reason now why the events wouldnt take place. Tonight security is also tightening across this city as well. Reporter we came to youngstown, ohio a traditionally democratic town to see how voters in the heart of the rust belt reacted to the conventions in cleveland and philadelphia. But after 30 years on the radio here, hes supporting his first republican, donald trump. The problem is we have lost too many good jobs. Reporter not everyone in town agrees, we ran into one of his listeners on the sidewalk. On the Democratic Party, i think i have a chance, i really do. It seems like when trump gets in, hes going to say this is the way its going to be and thats it. Do you know what thats called . Leadership. Thats called dictatorship. Reporter industrial jobs have dried up over the past 40 years and unemployment is high. And the democratic voters in youngstown, it will be key in winning the white house. So important, Hillary Clinton comes here tomorrow. Ohios non collegeeducated voters are going strongly for trump. 43 to clintons 36. And in this county alone, a notable 6,000 democrats have switched over to the republican party. But after watching the conventions, there is still plenty of undecided voters like democrat anthony villio, whos impressed with trump. Hes like me, hes a republican. Reporter but hes a billionaire. Right now at 6 00, a horrific wreck. A teenager is dead, fire others injured after a crash in the south bay. Lanes are shut down right now as Police Investigate this crash. We begin with this developing story in the south bay, a car crash at a busy intersection in santa clara. It happened at lafayette and montague expressway, near the river mark village in santa clara. Thats why we find ian cull with more. Ian, youre at the scene. What can you tell us . We know theres been one fatality and a few others injured. Reporter what police are saying is that the white chevy pickup was traveling southbound on lafayette when something muff happened that caused it to veer off and hit the traffic pole. Now, witnesses here say that they believe that the truck was going the speed limit when this happened around 3 13 this afternoon. Emergency crews and medics rushed to the scene here. Inside the truck, a 15yearold girl, a passenger, was killed. Five others in the truck were injured and taken to local hospitals. Police say their injuries are not lifethreatening. Police are trying to find out what happened here. The passengers are just being interviewed now. No other cars are hit, although investigates are on scene blocking part of the intersection.
