Announcer from nbc news World Headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news. Reporting tonight, jose diazbalart. Good evening. We are learning much more tonight about the deadly shooting rampage in colorado springs, colorado, one day after a gunman stormed a planned parenthood clinic and killed three people before surrendering. Today new details emerged about the suspect, although his motive is still unclear. Survivors began to tell their stories and president obama reacted to the shooting saying the country has to do something about what he called the easy accessibility of weapons of war getting into the hands of people who have no business wielding them. We have two reports tonight, and we begin in colorado springs. Reporter police say this is the man behind the bloodshed, a federal official telling nbc news robert dear appears to be mentally disturbed but is talking to investigators. Attention all units. Attention all units. Csp is working an active shooter. [ sirens ] reporter when officers arrived at planned parenthood in colorado springs, they faced a steady relentless volley of gunfire. Hes coming out. Hes got an ak. Said to be armed with a highpowered rifle, dear unloaded round after round into a packed shopping area on a busy black friday. Hundreds scrambled for cover. Witnesses say dear fired at anything that moved. There was a guy behind me with blood splatter all over him, and hes like, theres an active shooter outside. Reporter the standoff was just beginning. Some 45 people were inside planned parenthood when dear entered the lobby. He had a gun that was big and he was just shooting. Reporter Ketanya Craion was separated from her boyfriend, running into a back room where she hunkered down with three women. Listening she says to dear fire at police. It sounded like an ak. You could hear just like gunshots. From there, the bullets went through the wall. You could see it. You could smell it and see the gun powder. Reporter we now know police tapped into security cameras at the clinic, watching the gunman live as he carried out his assault. Once they were able to determine where the perpetrator was, the importance of that was then people in remote rooms could be extricated from the building. Reporter with the sun setting and s. W. A. T. Teams closing in, police say robert dear suddenly surrendered but still offered no motive. Police were in the crosshairs for five hours. Have a shot. Reporter five officers were hospitalized. This 44yearold, garrett swasey, the father of two Young Children lost his life. Two civilians also killed. This morning the bodies of the three victims were removed. A somber salute to the fallen. Amazing grace reporter collective tears for the victims. Im heartbroken that we are in this situation again and again and again. And i cry out with you and ask, why . When spaken into custody, he was rambling on about obama and baby parts, but they say those ramblings do not point to a motive. At least not yet. The names of the two incident civilians gunned down in the parking lot behind me have not yet been released. Thank you very much. Theres a long history of protest and violence aimed at planned parenthood and other clinics that provide abortions in this country. Planned parenthood has also become an intense political issue. Reporter while investigators search for a motive in the colorado shootings, the violence comes as planned parenthood has recently been under the microscope. The planned parenthood community is resolute. Reporter but its executive Vice President worries that heated rhetoric around abortion is encouraging violence. The extremist rhetoric that we hear from so many antiwomens Health Organizations and their targeting of planned parenthood can sometimes lead to these circumstances. Reporter though acts of violence are relatively rare between 1997 and 2012 there have been 76 attacks on american abortion providers. In september, a planned parenthood clinic was set on fire in washington state. In 2013, a man used an axe to damage a clinic in indiana. In 2009, george tiller, a doctor who performed lateterm abortions, was shot to death in his church. He wasnt a planned parenthood provider. This summer the organization became the center of a pitched political battle. Videos were released by an antiabortion activist group making it seem that planned parenthood was selling fetal tissue for profit. Claims president Cecil Richards vehemently denies. The outrageous videos leveled against planned parenthood based on heavily tampered videos are offensive and cat gore ukly untrue. Reporter while federal funds cannot be used for abortions, it fueled republicans efforts to try to defund the organization which also provides Reproductive Services and cancer screenings. The attempt was unsuccessful. They have become fodder on the campaign field. These planned parenthood videos are horrifying. They dont mind having Big Government interfere with a womans right to choose in trying to take down planned parenthood. There is a long history of violence against planned parenthood clinics. If it turns out to be an example of that, it falls very much in line with that history of violence. Reporter all the democratic president ial candidates have expressed their condolences to the victims, reiterating their support for planned parenthood. Ted cruz and john kasich also said theyreplay praying for the families. The only two republican candidates to weigh in so far. Kristen welker at the white house. Thank you. Turn to politics now and Donald Trumps Campaign Stop today in florida. The republican frontrunner was pushing back after being criticized for comments earlier this week in which he appeared to mock the New York Times reporter with a disability. Today trump attempted to clarify what he said. I dont mock people. I dont mock people that have problems. I dont mock people that have problems, believe me. For more on this, we turn to our political director and moderator of meet the press, chuck todd. Chuck, good to see you. Good evening, jose. From the day he announced his presidency and called undocumentmented immigrants rapists, is Something Like this going to have longterm repercussions for him . It depends on what his goal is. I think with his own supporters it doesnt have these repercussions. I think even when he speaks of facts or sentences that are proven to be totally untrue, they are sentiments that people that have gravitated towards supporting trump want to believe its true. So thats why i think none of this has stuck to him as far as him losing support. Now the question is, what about long term . The way hes been going about talking about and sort of misrepresenting facts, i think hes hurting his ability to grow support, to win over republicans who are not yet with him, in thinking i can trust this guy to be the standard bearer of the party. This is where i think he is risking things. What about for the gop . Well, look, i think at some point youre going to see more and more republicans getting more and more nervous that trump is defining the Republican Party in a terribly negative way, especially if it looks like hes being divisive with different groups of people, whether its women, whether its immigrants, whether its muslims. And its that i think that has some Party Leaders more concerned by the day. Thanks, chuck. You got it. Donald trump and ben carson will be chuck todds guests tomorrow on meet the press.
