Good evening. The highspeed, high stakes, and sometimes highly emotional sport of professional car racing danger lurks around every turn. Still what happened on a track in upstate new york last night stunned longtime racing fans leaving a young driver dead and another, one of the sports biggest names engulfed in tragedy and controversy. Officials say nascar champion tony stewart competing at a dirt track event struck and killed fellow driver kevin ward jr. As he stood on the track after a spinout. Today stewart withdrew from a nascar event he was supposed to race in as police sought to determine if this was anything more than what it appeared to be, a horrible accident. Nbcs kristen dalgren has the latest. Reporter a somber start to todays nascar sprint cup race in upstate new york. Details emerge of the deadly crash involving threetime nascar champion tony stewart. Stewarts car struck and killed 20yearold driver kevin ward at a dirt racetrack last night in new york, captured in this graphic video posted on youtube. You first see stewart in the number 14 car side by side with ward in the number 13 car. Wards car then spins into a wall. Ward gets out on to the track, then seems to point at stewart before crossing the track to confront him. A car just ahead of stewart swerved to avoid ward. But then tony stewart just hit that guy. Stewarts car hit that guy throwing him several feet to the track. Emergency crews responded quickly but ward died at the hospital. Investigators are reviewing video of the crash and how stewart operated the highpowered sprins cars equipped with wings at increased traction that help it turn corners. Today the Ontario County sheriff said stewart is cooperating. There are no facts in hand that would substantiate or support a criminal charge or indicate criminal intent. This is stewarts third crash in just over a year. A regular at dirt tracks he competes at a grass roots level in his spare time, thrilling fans and amateur drivers. Stewart even owns his own dirt track raceway in ohio. Stewart once threw his helmet at another car after the two collided racing for the third. Today he released a statement. There arent words to describe the sadness i feel. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. As you can see, lester, fans are leaving the race, this weighed very heavily on everyone here today. After stewarts future he could be limited by the race from the sprint cup by not starting here today but they released a statement earlier saying they support stewarts decision to not race today. There is growing outrage after an unarmed africanamerican teenager was shot and killed by police in the st. Louis suburb of ferguson, missouri. But there are conflicting reports about what led up to that shooting. Nbcs john yang has the details. Reporter on the streets of ferguson, missouri, outrage and anger. Protesters of different ages and races demanding answers of the shooting death of the 18yearold Michael Brown at the hands of a policeman. Investigators said that about noon saturday the officer, who hasnt been identified, encountered brown and another man ott street in an apartment complex. There was a struggle and one of the men pushed the officer into his car. Within the police car there was a struggle over the officers weapon. There was at least one shot fired within the car. Reporter the struggle spilled out on to the street where brown, whom investigators say was not armed, was fatally shot. Police shot this man for no reason. He came this way. Reporter this woman who took the cell phone video says she saw those shots from her apartment balcony. Hes running this way. He turns his body towards this way. Hands in the air. Being compliant. He gets shot in his face and chest and goes down and dies. Reporter witnesses said browns body lay in the street for hours. I would like everybody here to appreciate that it took a very long time yesterday to process the scene. Reporter the shooting sparked a furious reaction. Police responded in force, brandishing assault rifles. Michael brown graduated from high school earlier this spring, was to begin college next week. His mother has a message for the officer who killed him. Youre not god. You dont decide when youre going to take somebody from her. If that was the case, i brought him here. I should have took him from her. That was mine. That belonged to me. The battle was broadcast on television 20 miles away in erbil, a city threatened by isis for days. People are crowded around the tv here to watch the fighting that is taking place right outside this city. But more horrific reports are emerging of an isis reign of terror. An iraqi minister said isis kidnapped 300 women and killed 500 people. He claims some were buried alive. Where are my brothers and sisters, this girl says . Where is my mother . Thousands from the minority Yazidi Community have sought safety by climbing mt. Sinjar in terrible heat. There have been more aid drops and tonight there are reports that some people have been led to safety. Pope francis today expressed dismay and disbelief at the violence and called on the world to stop these crimes. And as the kurdish army fights back, some here are beginning to hope. Republicans today suggesting that the narrow focus of the mission is putting american lives here at home at risk. Isis is metastisizing throughout the region. And their goal, as they have stated openly, is to the destruction of the United States of america. They are more powerful now than al qaeda was on 9 11. Even former secretary of state Hillary Clinton who argued for arming the Syrian Rebels now adds, the failure to do that left a big vacuum which the jihadists have now filled. Is the administration gambling with another 9 11 . No, absolutely not. This president made clear if the terrorists pose a threat to the United States, well take action against them. They have not shown the desire to carry out 9 11 attacks here on the homeland. Theyve been focused on syria and iraq. In the fiveweekold conflict between israel and hamas. The two sides agreed to a new threeday ceasefire brokered by egypt. But as bill neily witnessed in gaza city, there were more deadly attacks in the hours leading up to this latest truce. Reporter fire and the fury of an unfinished war raged in gaza today. This the aftermath of an israeli air strike. This building was hit just a few minutes ago. First of all came a warning strike and then about two minutes later, a massive explosion. Amid all the talk of a ceasefire, the air strikes continue. Israel determined to strike hamas right up to the start of an agreed truce. Translator well continue until we achieve quiet, said Prime Minister netanyahu, and we wont negotiate under fire. Israel was hit today. Hamas rockets landing in fields. Two were shot down. The ceasefire will last three days and open the way for talks, but they failed once already. Many years another failure willes ask late the war. Some frightening moments for the engine of a jetblue a321 with 192 people onboard caught fire as it was about to take off from san juan, puerto rico, from new york. Details from hallie jackson. Reporter this is what horrified passengers saw moments after evacuating a jetblue plane, crews hosing down the left engine after it caught fire, taxiing for takeoff. It was a huge explosion. It sounded like someone had hit the plane with a mortar shell or something. It shook the whole plane. Raymond was one of 186 passengers forced to slide down emergency chutes on to the tarmac in san juan last night. People in the cabin began to scream that the smoke was coming into the cabin. Critics argue this could hurt the very people the city is trying to help. Asking police to round up kids simply because theyre outside at a certain time is not only unfair to kids and their families but a really poor use of police resources. We cant criminalize somebody for something they cant be criminally held responsible for. Kids have never been criminalized for curfew.
