South San Francisco. Traffic lights went dark, and 1400 customers were without power. Police were out directing traffic while pg e crews tried to fix those blown transformers. Its expected to be a long and uncomfortably warm night for a lot of families across the bay area, and a busy night for the pg e crews. Nbc bay areas Damian Trujillo joins us from pg e San Jose Emergency Operations Center with how theyre dealing with this crisis. Well, their full gear right now, raj behind me. This is where the big trucks come and go to make repairs up and down the Santa Clara Valley here. Right now there is a slight lull. But theyre coming and going all day long for the past few hours. Inside the operation center, crews are tracking those outages and waiting for more. Crews spent the day loading up the trucks with new transformers and heading out to bring power back to customers. The utility has called in crews from across the western region, including the central valley. Pg e says the transformers in that area are built for continuous days of excessive heat, unlike the transformers here. So areas like fresno dont see as many blowouts as cities that are closer to the coast. This is going to be a historic heat event. We are going to see records broken. So we know its going to be a huge challenge. Reporter inside the utilities Emergency Operations center in san jose, a team is monitoring the outages and working to get crews out to fix them. The utility is also preparing for the likelihood that the state will order it and other California Power companies to begin rolling blackouts to help ease the demand on our overtaxed power grid, an order that could come at any time. Sometimes its going to be a very quick decision that they make, and we will have to obey and respond to the cal isos orders to shed load. Reporter pg e says if rolling blackouts begin, they will affect a few zones at a time, with each one lasting from one to two hours. And the utility tries not to inconvenience the same zone twice during the same heatwave. The neighborhood around Bret Harte Middle School in san jose has already had problems. A blown transformer turned out the lights, fans, and ac for hours last night. Frustrating . Of course, always frustrating. Reporter this man named juan says hell pray the power doesnt go out again. And if it does we have people at the ready to go out there to respond. If our equipment overheat, if it fails we have folks that are ready to go throughout and get the power going as soon as we can. Reporter and the power did go out again for juan and everybody else there in the area around Bret Harte Middle School in san jose, power failure again. 30,000 people in san jose without power. If there is a silver linings, jessica and raj, i checked the app on my phone. It said it was 107 degrees earlier, but it only felt like 106. So there you go. Thats glass is half full right there. Thank you, damian. We have an update from the fire lines in contra costa county. Crews have been able to stop this vegetation fire from spreading to homes. Its burning on berryhill road. This is just south of highway 4 near martinez in crockett. This is in the same area as yesterdays fire. Now this new fire has burned about 50 acres. Its 40 contained. And adding to the fire danger, the winds in marin county. Take a look. Our own Terry Mcsweeney sending this video into the newsroom. You can see the palm trees blowing in the wind. Lets bring in jeff ranieri, who has been tracking those dangerous temperatures for us. And even the wind there in the north bay. Jeff . The wind, thats all from cooler air at the coastline. So you got the hot air inland, cool air at the coast. Thats helping to generate the wind. But the top story today no doubt is that brutal heat. Check out the heat map here of california. You can see this whitepink color here. This basically envelopes most of the state, and thats the kind of heat we are under. We compared it to death valley, which is 120 today. Not far off here in pleasanton at 116. And pleasanton wasnt the only spot getting up that hot. As many of you know, pittsburg 116. St. Held lane in 115. Morgan hill 113, and san jose alltime record high at 109. Its never been hotter than that in history in san jose than what we experienced today. So what i want to show you next is common sense stuff. Some heat tips with the verge of rolling blackouts here, this is the kind of stuff you want to think about now. Once your ac goes out, you cant turn on any fans, your house is going the heat up really fast with the hot temperatures outside. So its easy. We all know it. Drink water. Hydrate. They say when youre thirsty, youre already some sort of dehydrated. So make sure to drink water. Keep yourself hydrated. Cold towel on the back of your neck can cool your core body temperature. And remember those pets. Temperatures right now beginning to drop after 109 in san jose. Were currently at 100. 101 in concord, and starting to drop in santa rosa to 92. San francisco,le 5. Making matters more complicated is that many are unable or unwilling to leave the streets. And that has the citys Community Response team increasing its outreach efforts. Nbc bay areas velena jones is in oakland with how the macro team is quite literally trying to save lives. Reporter for many people, escaping the heat is not an option in oakland. Thats where the macro team comes. In its the City Fire Department unit that dispatches crews to some of the areas most vulnerable populations, bringing potentially lifesaving resources. Were with the macro program, just giving out some water. Its hot today. Would you buys like some water . And close to tripledigit temperatures. Stay in the shade, man. Reporter this simple interaction can make all the difference for people battling the heat on the streets of oakland. Its great to have water and because im worth it. Reporter this is the macro team, or mobile Assistance Community responders that sends an emt and resource specialist to respond to nonemergency calls. Lately, theyve been spending their days helping homeless during this heatwave. Just some signs of heatstroke, some dizziness and things like that. Were seeing an increase already. Reporter the team is increasing their crews in an effort to give out more water, food and services to find people shelter. The goal, to prevent an emergency before it happens. We have many folks weve met out here in their 70s and 80s. That alone when its almost 100 degrees can be a problem. Then with untreated hypertension or diabetes, things like that, the heat makes it much worse. Reporter from underpasses to parks, rob hanna and his team visited the same spots multiple times throughout the day to make sure people are all right. It makes a big difference because now the oakland Fire Department dont have to come out. Macro can get there on scene and be able to offer them some water or be able to even help them move into the shade. Reporter an effort those in need will tell you goes far beyond their physical health. Sometimes you just need interaction and fellowship with people. Reporter velena jones, nbc bay area news. Now just an hour before dismissal, williams elementary, Bret Harte Middle School, and leland high school, all in san jose lost power. We kept the kids indoors. Luckily the ac had been running all day. And with a short period of time left, felt like the rooms would stay cool enough to keep the kids until the end of the day.
