This is expected to target immigrants from the seven primarily muslim nations. Larry ger sten is with us. The first travel ban thrown out by the courts. How will this one differ . Whats your insight here . We havent seen the actual document yet but sources suggest there will be some major changes. President trumps new temporary ban will likely exempt green card holders and those with dual citizenship. Its also expected that the new ban will not single out Syrian Refugees for automatic rejection or special vetting. And the new version will omit any reference to religion, unlike the first one. And timely the new ban will not impact people in the process of travel to the u. S. Assuming theyre legally entitled to admission. That should clear up a lot of the mess at the airport. Thats notable adjustments there. What about the refugees here. Does this new version make it easier for refugees to seek refuge here in the u. S. . Anything but. Part of the original ban lowered the number of refugee to 50,000 from 110,000 allowed during the obama administration. Now since the courts left that revised cap in place, refugee admissions will be cut by more than half. Which takes us to another point. Already this physical yefiz fis u. S. Admitted 35,000 refugees. So the whole refugee idea is going south. Admissions will be slowing to a trickle in the coming months. As we talk about often, its challenging around here in the bay area since were so heavily democratic. But whats the narnl response and National Pulse to all of this . Over the last two weeks there have probably been a half a dozen polls all coming up with the same response. The American Public is equally divided on whether the president s travel ban will make the United States more safe. No doubt. Opponents of the ban, theyre going to run to the court, take that president to court yet again. And whats less certain is whether this time theyll prevail or this time the president will hold the upper hand. Thank you. Were expecting the president perhaps in the next 24 hours to issue this revised travel ban. Thanks, larry. With this water, it stinks like asphalt and its going directly to the fields. A controversial practice in the valley meant to address is drought is being questioned by some scientists. Stephen stock joins was tin side story. About 80 of the water used by californians goes to farmers irrigating their crops. According to uc davis and the Public Policy institute of california. In attempts to find new sources of water, some farmers are now using recycled or whats called produce water, wastewater thats been used to extract oil from deep underground to irrigate their crops and the food we eat. Some scientists are raising concerns in that report that that could make people sick. The ground water is so precious tom frans has been growing almonds all his life. Years of California Drought threatened hundreds of farms like this here prompting some of his neighbors to turn to a cheep and abun dent source of water, water thats not exactly pure. Its the wild west out here. The farmers are irrigating with recycled wastewater from nearby oil wells. The safety of the crops is unknown right now. To get at the oil deposit underground, Oil Companies pump millions of gallons of water mixed with chemicals mixed with High Pressure to bring the crude to the surface. It takes 10 to 100 barrels of water to extract one barrel of oil. Whats called produce water is pumped through filters made of walnut shells, then skimmed to remove any remaining oil and then mixed with fresh water in large ponds like this one. They can never get it all out and you smell it. Then that mixture of produced and fresh water is sent down canals where its used to irrigate everything from oranges to carrots, almonds to grapes. At least 90 farms in the Central Valley use more than 20 million gallons of this produced wastewater every day. While the practice has existed for two decades, this report just released by scientists at uc berkeley and the pse Energy Science institute raises new questions about whether the practice is safe. There are a lot of chemicals that go down oil and gas wells. Seth is shauncof 0 acoauthor the report. Last year the water board ordered the Oil Companies to release a list of the chemicals they use in the water to extract oil. The Companies Listed 173 different chemicals. 40 of those did rise to the chemicals of concern category. But the companys classified 66 of those chemicals as trade secrets making them off limit to independent analysis, even though these reports show at least 10 chemicals on the list are possible or known human carcinoge carcinogens. We do not know enough. It could be safe. It could be safe. But it could also cause cancer. It could. We have more to look at. You smell that . Thats like a kerosene spemell . Thats oil. Scott smith works for water defense, a Nonprofit Group focused on clean water. You cant test water for a split second. Smith tested watt near the same locations in kurn county where the Oil Companies found little to no chemicals. I want nothing more than to prove that these contaminants arent going into the air, arent in the water and arent a threat to the crops. By testing in deeper water and for longer periods of time, smith says he found something all together different than what the Oil Companies tests showed. We detected chromium, they did not. We detected nickel, they didnt. We detected hydrocarbons. They didnt test for it. You cant find what you dont look for. The produced water has not significantly affected. Water uptake in the trees. Blake sanden is an irrigation engineer whos worked closely with the produced wastewater. The analyses that ive seen in many cases show a detection of the materials but quite often even below Drinking Water standards. The Water District which is responsible for the water in these canals conducts its own monthly and quarterly test. The agency concluded that the water is safe for irrigation. Do you think people who buy these crops know about this right now . No. This is coming into your kitchen and living room every day. All they can say is it hasnt been proven definitively to be dangerous yet. Well, we here not using it on any land. Chevron oil expense which sells a lot of the produced water declined numerous requests for an interview. We received a statement, quote, protecting people and the environment is one of chevrons core values. The water supply meant all regulatory standards for agricultural use and showed no concern. I was at wilcoxs introductory news conference. He didnt strike me as hollywood in any way. This needs explaining. Its an inside joke between justin and i. You know, he was such a fun coach. We need a guy who can recruit the west coast. Didnt have that for the last few years. And rogers believes that despite losing their quarterback, top receiver and top rusher, wilcox will have the bears contending again sooner rather than later. Im excited about watching him take that team to the heights that it deserves to be at. Theyre going to be back real quick, i think. Cal fans sure hope hes right.
