Theres always going to be something bad youre going to catch but i think that happens in any fishery. Reporter but the federal government found they kill and injure vulnerable Marine Mammals at a rate higher than any other type of fishing gear used along the west coast. All youre going to do is have more imports and thats just killing of 10 fold the killing. Reporter burke says california now takes more precautions to protect endangered sea turtles, they cant be used for half the year and they now have to be 36 feet below the surface so theres room for sea life to swim over the top and noise make devices are along the net to scare away dolphins and mammals. As a result the number of intangled marine animals has been cut in half. But its estimated the nets still caught 14 whales and four sea turtles. Some species are endangered so injuring or killing one or two can impact the entire population. With this to mile long nets can potentially intangle or kill a lot of whats in its path, isnt that, pardon the pun, casting too wide a net . A mile long and you leave it out overnight . I guess it would be all in the hands of the person using it. Reporter todd steiner believes they intangle too much to be used responsibly. You could throw bombs into the ocean and catch all in the ocean. Were not looking for efficiency, were looking for sustainability. Reporter they do issue guidelines on how much they should be allowed to kill uninhad tensiunin unintentional unintentionally. We discoved there are no penalties.
