Reason for concern or better use of tax dollars . Palo alto fire station covering a high fire danger area of the foothills is closed. The station and foothill park received few calls last year. Is it still needed . Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro live with a look at the closure. Reporter terry, usually this gate would be open during fire season and the fire station at the top of this road would be fully staffed. But now its not going to be because this summer, unless theres a red flag warning, this station is closed. And that leaves some homeowners very worried. Known for sweeping views of the peninsula, the area surrounding Foothills Park is also dry. Right now the park is in high fire danger. July 1st, the Palo Alto Fire Department stopped staffing fire station 8 at the park. A station assigned to protect an area with 160 homes. For years, two or three firefighters worked here during fire season, but palo alto fire chief eric nickels says last year the station only responded to ten calls. We decided that we would probably be a better use of tax taxers dollars to handle more the calls down here in the valley versus staffing that station up there during fire season. Reporter but the president of the Union Representing palo alto firefighters says closing the station will put the community at risk. This station, although its low frequency, call volumes, is high risk potential. The drought has caused the brush to be thick and dry. Its hard getting access in and out of the foothills. The road is the only way up and down. If something were to happen, it could be catastrophic. Reporter chief nickel says thanks to agreements with Santa Clara County fire departicle ded other agencies residents in the foothills will still be protected and response times should not change. Homeowners we talked to off camera told us theyre not convinced. They say they felt safer knowing help was less than a mile awhey. What did he say pg e did or did not do in this case . Reporter pg e, the investigator into this blast by the National Transportation safety board said pg es conduct amounted to obstruction and misleading their probe. Basicallyiving incomplete answers, delaying responses and some cases they gave information that turned out to be incorrect and had to be pursued by the ntsb at every chance to get the correct answer. And in some cases they wrote at least one letter that the government claims is obstructionist. Mainly they didnt have a policy that the ntsb investigator believed for sure that they had. And he felt that this was the worst case, the worst atmosphere, the most hostile response of any pipeline operator that hed encountered in 18 years investigating incidents across the country. He also described pg es attitude as well. Reporter right. Well, he was saying during interviews, they would have, you know, a lawyer who interjected constantly and he felt like this was supposed to be what he considered a factgathering investigation, not a courtroom battle.
