Now, donald trump may be moving closer to the republican nomination for president , but hes doing so largely without the support of silicon valleys gop donors. Particularly those in the tech community. Nbc bay areas political analyst larry gersen is with us. Lets talk about why he cant succeed with valley republicans. After all theyre businessmen, hes a businessman. Reporter lets go the other way first, jessica. Theres a strong democratic tilt in silicon valley. Which makes it difficult for just about any republican to overcome. Only Florida Republican senator marco rubio or more specifically a rubio superpac, has received any money, thats 3 million from oracle ceo larry ellisson. Beyond that, no republican has raised more than . 75 million. Compare that with 16 million for Hillary Clinton. 2 million for Bernie Sanders, and well, we see where the valley leans. But beside all of it is that trump, the leader, has done worst of all bringing in a paltry 31,000. That is a big difference there. Now, obviously hes done really well in other parts of the country. But there is a big disconnect between trump and silicon valley. And it may be because of issues in his stance on those. Reporter yeah. Look. Trump seems to be out of step with the technology community. He opposes the Transpacific Partnership deal which valley lead ares see as providing the ability to sell more of their products. Trump has also vowed to end the h 1 B Visa Program which enables Valley Companies to bring in quality highskilled workers. And theres the impasse also with respect to the apple phone. The fact that the government wants apple to unleash that phone, open it up because may be a terrorist item. Trump has said were going to boycott apple for its resistance to the federal pressure. All these things go the other way from where the valley wants to go. A lot of Business Issues obviously. But what about the larger questions of morality . Where is the disconnect between the companies and trump there . Reporter social questions here. Silicon valley and trump differ on lots of major social issues. Once he was prochoice. Now trump has done a 180 and is now prolife. Something that offends an awful lot of people here in the valley. Trump also opposes samesex marriage. And he is opposed, by the way, he has proposed i should say to appoint a Supreme Court justice that will reverse the courts recent decision. Finally theres this whole question of immigration. My goodness. When most people here believe that the state and the region have thrived from the contributions of immigrants. So look, whether business or cultural ideas or whatever, whatever the difference might be, trump and most of the valley residents are just out of sync. Now, that doesnt mean he wont get the republican nomination, jessica. But if he does, its going to be with very little support from this area of the state. It will be interesting to see what happens. Thank you very much, larry. Lets talk about the democrats for a moment as weve been telling you Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are debating in miami. You can see it right there. There are a lot of folks who live in the east bay and work in San Francisco who are very eager to commute by bike. And it is a doable commute. There are people who ride from marin to San Francisco now. But not all cyclists agree. Theyre going about it all wrong. And it would just annoy a bunch of motorists. That it would. The mtc says a big challenge is creating a bike path that wont weigh down the bridge and prevent megaships like this one from reaching the port of oakland. Theyve got some time to think about it. Transit leaders say even if a proposal does pass, they dont expect any construction to take place, at least for eight years. Look at that boat there.
