At the gilroy armory where we operate the largest cold weather shelter for the county, the capacity is normally 100, but with the permission of the National Guard weve been allowed to go over capacity in the colder weather. This campaign to crackdown on Impaired Driving actually started back on thanksgiving and continues to new years day. This is a time period when police see increased drinking. Dui teams are staging their equipment for a new checkpoint. San mateo will be at east 4th avenue and south grant street. Thats downtown where there are a lot of restaurants and bars that are popular with peninsula residents. First Law Enforcement officers say checkpoints lower dui deaths and injuries. Crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by 20 when well publicized checkpoints are done routinely. Prior announcements of checkpoint locations actually make a person think twice when they know where police will be. We put information out for the public beforehand before doing any kind of dui action. It puts an idea in the publics mind that the police are out there, the police are Holding Us Accountable for dui driveing, and makes them less likely to do that.
