Last year, the cold was deadly for people on the streets. Reporter it certainly was. In fact, four people who were homeless lost their lives this time last year after an eightday cold snap. They can hold 250 here and so far despite our cold snap they have not been forced to turn anyone away, but that could change. There are hundreds of People Living on the streets of san jose and encampments, including this one called the village. The center is bracing for long lines. At the gilroy armory where we operate the largest cold weather shelter for the county, the capacity is normally 100, but with the permission of the National Guard weve been allowed to go over capacity in the colder weather. Reporter she says they are also allowing people to stay several extra hours in the morning, leaving at 8 00 a. M. So they can stay warm a little longer. Still there are hundreds of homeless who plan to brave the cold outside tonight. Many of them have pets and they are not allowed to stay in these shelters. They can be deadly. They have hired security at night because of damage caused by the homeless at the village. With new years around the corner, Police Officers will be out in force looking for drunk drivers. Officers are getting ready to set up a dui check point just a couple of hours from now. Reporter thats right. This campaign to crackdown on Impaired Driving actually started back on thanksgiving and continues to new years day. This is a time period when police see increased drinking. Dui teams are staging their equipment for a new checkpoint. San mateo will be at east 4th avenue and south grant street. Thats downtown where there are a lot of restaurants and bars that are popular with peninsula residents. First Law Enforcement officers say checkpoints lower dui deaths and injuries. Crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by 20 when well publicized checkpoints are done routinely. Prior announcements of checkpoint locations actually make a person think twice when they know where police will be. We put information out for the public beforehand before doing any kind of dui action. It puts an idea in the publics mind that the police are out there, the police are Holding Us Accountable for dui driveing, and makes them less likely to do that. San mateo pd will be specially trained officers to evaluate drugged drives. It is not just impairment from illegal drugs, but also from prescription and over the counter drugs.
