It was a wild day at the uc regents meeting as protesters protested against proposed tuition hikes. Right now at 6 30, a tense showdown in San Francisco. Take a look, flaring tempers and broken glass, its all about the cost of education rising tuition. This was the highprofile showdown involving students, the governor, and uc president Janet Napolitano. Mark matthews was inside where the tempers flared, also where the governor was. Reporter the governor is willing to fund ucs system to the tune of about 4 increase over the next couple of years. Thats 4 per year. But thats if tuition stays flat. Uc president napolitano says its not enough and she is proposing tuition hikes of as much as 25 over the next five years. Uc regents were met with a blockade of protesters as tempers flared. Police say 21yearold jeff melvin of berkeley used a barricade to shatter a glass door. He was hustled away in handcuffs. Inside, dozens more protesters shouted for uc president Janet Napolitano to go. But nepapolitano says without me money from the state the 5 per year tuition hikes would go forward. The plain fact is that tuition must now be on the table. Reporter Governor Brown attempted to sidetrack the increases by asking the regents to spend more time studying the proposals. So this looks toward a joint effort, a collaborative effort. Reporter napolitano shot it down. We dont have time to wait for another commission. Reporter an estimated 80 students were allowed one minute apiece to voice their opposition. I really want to challenge the notion that this plan is stable and predictable. Its neither. Now our tuition is over 12,000. And is this if this fee is placed upon us, it will increase to over 15,000. On behalf of the undergrads, do not support this plan. Reporter in the end, a majority of regents voted for the tuition hikes, 5 per year, to for the next five years. We didnt have a dialogue about this. This thing was thrust upon us. We think thats going to push out over the next three hours. So as we take you outside to the sky camera network, roadways are wet. Temperatures drops into the 50s for most of the bay area. What youre going to see is for the Early Morning commute. It looks dry. Well have areas of clouds, a few spotty areas of drizzle. As far as the heaviest rainfall goes, thats going to be holding off way to the north. We do expect this to begin to move into the northern counties. Marin, napa, also sonoma, by 10 00 in the morning. Eventually to San Francisco by the 1 00 hour. And then to the south bay. San jose, a much better shot of getting the rainfall by 2 30 tomorrow afternoon down here across the santa clara valley.
