Thus far no one has been charged in the case. It is all about the math. The mayor of san jose says gang crime is down 70 . But how he got that number is questionable. Investigative reporters exposed city leaders manipulating crime stats last year and that led to stats being deleted from official records. Now more problems, jenna . Thats right, this morning mayor reed claims san jose has seen a dramatic drop in gangrelated violent crime, down 70 since the beginning of this year. But we found he only compared the month of january to the month of september, skipping all the other months. Tonight we investigate san joses gang crime stats. Its a National Model for reasons because it works. Reporter the mayor touts gangrelated crimes have dropped 70 . The Police Department presented gang crime data at the may why ares Gang Task Force meeting. But police made no mention of a 70 drop. Just the mayor. Hes comparing total Violent Crimes in january to total crimes in september. I think anybody whos taken math can look at those numbers and see that weve had a significant decrease in gang crime this year. It went from 28 in january down to eight in september. Reporter january had the highest number of crimes and september had the lowest so far this year. Youre comparing the highest month to the lowest month and skipping everything between. Do you stand by it going down by 70 . Thats Pretty Simple math when you go from 28 to eight, thats a any differential. Reporter one example, he says gangrelated robberies dropped from eight in january to one in september. But what about the months in between . This years total so far, 36 gangrelated robberies. Last year over the same time period, there were 23. So a rise, not a drop, in gangrelated ropries. Homicides, eight last year. Seven this year. Rapes, none last year. One this year. As for aggravated assault, police say they changed the way they categorize those crimes. So its not accurate to compare this years numbers to last years. Just looking at homicides, rapes and ropries, violent gang crime is actually up 42 . People can look at the data for themselves. They dont have to take my word for it. The math is the math. Reporter math that appears fuzzy. The mayor is painting a picture that only he can see and that serves his political purpose. There was a 70 gang Crime Reduction . You would have seen that in a Police Department press release, not a mayor press release. We asked the Police Department about the mayors math. It says it would never make the kind of comparison the mayor did. The san jose Police Department, as most other Police Departments, only make comparisons to prior years. For example, january this year compared to january last year. Or a period of time this year compared to that same time frame last year. As we did in our calculations.
