A sign above the door says simply, Robin Williams, a small tribute to a genius of comedy known around the world but who never turned his back on the place he was raised. Thats why were here rather than out in front of the Coroners Office which is where we learn details of a suicide. The deputy coroner described a 911 call. The caller was distraught and indicated it was an apparent suicide due to a hanging had taken place. Reporter 63yearold Robin Williams body discovered by his personal assistant hours after he had apparently hung himself. Reporters asked if he left a note. We are not discussing the note or whether there was a note. Reporter it is enough to say here that the evidence convinced investigators there was no one else involved. Preliminary information developed during the investigation by Coroner Division personnel has revealed mr. Williams had been seeking treatment for depression. Reporter williams wife was the last to see helm alive. She slept in a separate bedroom sunday night and thought williams was still asleep when she left the house the next morning. Today people came by the tiburon house to pay their respects. They wanted to see the jeanngen genies house. Reporter those who knew williams said he was the kind of guy who would never turn away from someone saying hi. When he wasnt on, he was very lowkey and quiet. A lovely man, and this is really sad. Reporter these people drove over from piedmont with a message. 2014 is a year that needs to be a year we address Mental Illness in this country. Reporter and this woman who never met williams still felt a connection. I loved all his movies. He gi he just was wonderful, really touched me. Reporter tuesday night is comedy night here at the throgmorton. He was here last tuesday night. Coming up, we la go inside the theater. The manager will talk to us about Robin Williams, the person that he knew, and the performer. From the throgmorton theater, mark matthews, nbc bay area news. So many colorful roles and classic locations. And he didnt just use San Francisco locations. He left a lasting impression in danville. One of the most member ral scenes in mrs. Doubtfire is at the bridges restaurant. This is where he changed from a man to a woman several times. Flowers have been set in front of a movie poster. Theyve been swamped with requests for reservations. We have people coming in almost every day wanting to see the signed portrait in the back. And see the tables where the family sat and everything. And yesterday the phones were just ringing off the hook. Reporter williams and the movie crew spent nearly two weeks in danville. He was often seen in costume signing autographs and simply joking with people. Back to the classic Pacific Heights home used in mrs. Doubt fire. Fans have used it as a shrine. Now the owner of the home doesnt mind. He, too, a big fan of Robin Williams. Williams entertained so many people across the world, but the bay area was his home. And local comedy clubs, williams often popped in to try to relax and make people laugh. Jodi hernandez is at another club in the city where williams got his start. Really his roots were in standup comedy. Reporter thats absolutely right. And this is where it all began for Robin Williams at a spot that used to be called the holy city zoo. Its now called the sidebar. You can see that folks have left remembrances out front. This is where williams closest friends gathered to share their sorrow. Today we caught up with a few of them. For five hours, they come and tell jokes for free. Reporter debbie cant imagine the San Francisco comedy scene without her longtime friend, Robin Williams. Theres no words to describe when he would just show up at comedy day and go onto the sfanl. You could just feel the electricity and the love coming from the audience. It was just, the minute he hit the stage was just so magic, and just to think that its gone. Reporter she has known williams for more than three decades. She saw him just two weeks ago at a friends barbecue where he showed no sign of what was to come. Never in our ever, in our wildest, craziest dreams did we think we would lose him so soon. Coe have reached out to anyone. Any one of us would have been there for him in a heartbeat. We, the guys and gallons who did standup here, he was a fixture. Reporter comic bob sar lott has known him since the early days, performing at the holy city zoo. He seemed relaxed when he ran into him at a local comedy show. This, i wasnt quite ready for this. Because who knows what the demons are, but he seemed happier than ive ever seen him. If you know someone who suffers from depression, make sure they know that you love them. Over on nbc tonight, hundreds of people in the south bay are learning that theyre living on top of toxic land. Some of the innovations that put Silicon Valley on the map are to blame for that toxic trouble. Now the epa is stepping in and telling them that their house could be at risk. Nbc bay areas Michelle Roberts is live outside the san miguel elementary school. And its one of three schools sitting on top of that contaminated ground. Reporter the chemicals have been therefore for 30 years in cases. They say vapors can be caught inside homes and schools. Jodi lee is enrolling her son at san miguel. Shes new to the area and hasnt heard that the school sits on a plume of contaminated ground water. Around 200 homes are on the affected area. The area has tested positive for a component left behind by electronics manufacturers. The public needs to get involved to make sure they do the right thing. Reporter he says tce can rise through the ground and get trapped inside a building through a process called vapor intrusion. The risk to pregnant women is that their babies will be born with cardiac birth defects. Reporter three sunnyvale companies are believed to be responsible for the pollution, amd, northrup grummuns, and phillips. It states that phillips may endanger human health because it hasnt accepted a cleanup plan. Phillips says they take it very seriously and regular tests has confirmed theres no immediate risks to residents. Some people in the area are frustrated, saying they had no idea their homes and schools could be making them sick. They have a responsibility to the state of california and to californias future and the children and families that are here now. Reporter two out of the three schools have already been tested. A bay area pastor is accused of molesting a child. The pastor works at the indonesian pentecostal Four Square Church in San Francisco. This is in the richmond district. Derek shore joins us from this church. What do we know right now, and could there be multiple victims . Reporter what were told is there isnt actually a brick and mortar church. This is one of the churches he rented space from here. The golden Gate Christian Church. That is where that pastor allegedly at least preached from. Take a look at who were talking about. He is vente sinco. He is said to have committed the crimes on a victim under 12 years of age at least three occasions while they were there for a gathering of a church group. He is listed as the pastor for the indonesian four square pent costal church. Both places he rented space for his services. Officers say they are very concerned there could be other victims. Meanwhile, golden Gate Christian Church wants to make it clear they are not connected. Unfortunately, based on, you know, just past experiences with this type of situation, he was in a position where he would have access to children. We are concerned with that. And wed like to speak with anybody who may have information about him. This is the first time i hear from you. Im so sad about that, you know, but i just want you to know that our ministry and their ministry totally is no connection. Reporter and detectives say these alleged crimes originally were reported to the San Bruno Police department. When they found out those crimes took place in daley city they transferred over there. Meanwhile the pastor is being held on 300,000 bail. Tonight San Jose Police know who and where, but they dont know how two young women died in a motel room. Medical examiners identified them as 18 year old michelle kwms and 26 year old julie aguha of san jose. A third party checked the women into the hotel nearly a week ago. The decomposing bodies were found sunday. The medical examiner hasnt determined the cause of death yet and is waiting for the results of toxicology tests. 2. 5 million of public funds mismanaged. We first exposed the problems at sam translast year. Investigative reporter vicky nguyen joins us. They found millions of dollars in sloppy accounting, accounting that was uncovered only after whilsle blowers came to nbc bay area. But they did not find evidence of criminal conduct. People asked, you were with this big star. And i didnt see him as that. I saw him as my friend and such a nice man. Reporter as a child fighting cancer, cameron says being herself on the set was easy, and having a comedian around made it fun. Even when we had to go to lunch, we would be out in front of the food truck and hanging out on the table. And he would come over, oh, my goodness, did you try the lemonade . Its so good. He didnt want to hang out with the adults. He wanted to hang out with the little kids. Cameron says williams stayed in touch through the years, getting to know her family and seeing her healthy. We had a real strong bond. Reporter and when the news came of williams death, it hit hard, losing a childhood friend who was there all along. It was hard, because sorry he was so full of life. And everyone around him loved him. And even being sick with cancer during the film, he almost made us forget. Cameron did some acting after appearing in patch adams but did more work for the make a wish foundation. Thats the foundation that led her to meet williams in the first place. The news of williams death is also felt on social media. Net base says in the 24 hours following his death, nearly 9 million tweets were sent out. The great majority praising williams comedy and movies. The news was also the toptrending topic on facebook where many people in the bay area remembered meeting williams and the time that he took to greet fans. But here at this hotel, the companys parent, Starwood Hotels says it isnt looking to eliminate staff but rather assist them with the help of this guy. This is the very first botler. The idea is to take timeconsuming jobs off the handles of front desk staff so the staff can spend a lot more time being attentive to guests needs and requests in person. From an efficiency standpoint, it gives us much more efficiency, and allows our talent members to do what theyre here for, which is to serve our guests. Reporter the robot itself is designed by a startup which has received funding from the likes of google ventures, but even the companys ceo says robots can only do so much. They can do simple things pretty well and reliably over and over, but they cant do all the things a person can do. They can faithfully be a productivity tool. Reporter this is just a pilots program. But Starwood Hotels hopes to roll out these robots to nearly 100 locations around the world. And as costs of sensors inside the robot comes down, the idea becomes more affordable. Its going to come in around a few thousand dollars. It wont be multiple tens of thousands of dollars. And even though right now we have mainly 70s across the board, we did get into some mid and upper 80s back across the tri valley, but you can also see from the east shore to the tri valley were currently tracking temperatures in the 70s. It is the cloudiest and foggiest, no doubt, across the peninsula hills, looking back toward the coastline in woodside right now weve got reduced visibility down to about 5 miles at this point. Still some of the best weather in the south bay, 72 right now. A mix of some sun and also some blue skies. So lets go ahead and take you into the forecast again, with the clouds that have moved in, temperatures have dropped off dramatically. When you compare it to this time yesterday were down from anywhere about 4 to 8 degrees. Primary difference for these cooler temperatures, all due to the wind. Winds coming in out of the west. When you live in the bay area, any kind of wind from the west here like in oakland, also for san jose and livermore, it helps to drag in that cool pacific air, and thats dropping down our temperatures. Now the other thing were going to have working for us tomorrow thats going to help keep numbers down substantially from some of the heat we could be seeing this time of the year is this storm system. This storm is going to be moving off to the north. So well see the cloud cover again build back behind it. So for tomorrow well have gray, overcast conditions from santa rosa down to about san jose. Computer models also picking up on a little green as well. Then as we head throughout the afternoon, well get the sunshine back, and it looks like a real Beautiful Day coming in that meek ricroclimate forecast. If you live in the south bay, numbers right near arverage. Saratoga, 86. Now for the peninsula, as we mentioned, with the fog in place, numbers will stay in the 60s. Out towards los altos, menlo park, low 80s. And in San Francisco, a classic day with low 60s. And the clouds lingering. But if youre headed to downtown San Francisco, get some rays of sunshine in here. 68 degrees expected along the embarcadero. The thing to watch out for here in the north bay is clouds in the morning hours, but you should still have a decent window of sunshine in the afternoon. And the tri valley staying out of the 90s.
