Of the companys wave gliders are right now tweeting back information and photos from inside the hurricane headed for hawaiis big island. The difference here is that typically youve got this information from the satellite which is above the clouds and were on the Ocean Surface collecting this data which has never been done before. Reporter amanda of oakland is also tracking the hurricane and hoping her family, all of whom live on the big island, are prepared when the storm hits. I almost started crying talking to my mom. You know, im really worried about them and i love them. I love everybody. Reporter most of her family including her mother live in kona in the storms path but her dad is in hilo which will likely get hit first. My mom is Still Holding up hope that mauna kea, the big island, will brick eak up the system. I dont know if thats possible. Shes holding out hope that the storm wont make it to the big island. One direct flighting from sfo to kona has been canceled. Flights to hawaiis other islands are still departing. Live at sfo, monte francis, nbc bay area news. Thanks. We want to show you video of the city of hilo on the big island. As you can see, the skies are dark and gloomy. And the rain has already started to fall. Chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking both hurricanes. Jeff . With so much data it can be confusing. We want to break it down. We are tracking julio. It is the farthest away from hawaii. Winds at 105 Miles Per Hour. Iselle is the closer storm. Expected to make landfall tonight. Winds of 80 Miles Per Hour. We will get you into the winds. They are increasing with that storm system just offshore of the big island. Winds anywhere from 20 to 40 Miles Per Hour from hilo over towards lanei. Here is the most important data if you have plans there or you have family. This is the forecast track. You can see tonight just offshore for landfall at 8 00 with winds at 70 Miles Per Hour. Making landfall late this etching across the big island. That will take the hardest hit. Then moving to the south, at least the center of the storm for maui, honolulu, and also kauai. The outer band will lash the areas but it will be an all day event here for friday. Once we get past friday were going to move on to the next storm, julio. I think the biggest thing to focus in on here is it is not a direct hit for hawaii. The center of the storm will be to the north of the big island. It will stay to the north of honolulu. Also kauai as we head through sunday and mondays forecast. Winds of 60 to 70 Miles Per Hour. So with both storms coming, the largest threat will be the flooding threat for all of the islands as rainfall totals will range 6 to 14 inches. Thank you, jeff. Today in the bay meteorologist is in maui for us this evening. Kristina, youre supposed to be on your honeymoon. Instead bracing for two hurricanes. How are the tourists preparing for this . As a lot of tourists out here have never experienced anything like this. Many people are from here from other countries and they arrived here on the island of maui with no idea that not one but two very powerful storms are going to hit as we head through the meks few days. Now, im here on theres a lot of people out here still sunbathing. We still have plenty of sunshine. The wave comes in waves and it comes in heavily at times and then we get the sun. Were just getting the outer bands for now. Were expecting the worst part as we head throughout tonight and tomorrow morning. It could be pretty rough around here. Theyre closing roads already. The schools are closed. But here, the tourists, still have an opportunity to enjoy a little bit of sunshine before the first of two very powerful storm systems moves through here. I know that there is a lot of anxiety, but im doing my best to let people know you need to get supplies, water, emergency radio. And everything that can get you through two to three days without power or water here on the island. On the subject of those supposed plip, weve been hearing that some of the locals are reporting that there are short supply and there may be even some price gounling. What are you hearing there on the island . Oh, yeah, we just paid almost 5 a gallon for gas out here. And before when we first arrived here just days ago we got it for 4. 35. So that does go to show thats a. I cant tell you thats gouging. I just tell you my own experience. A lot of the tourists here are planning on having hurricane parties. Probably isnt the best idea. Because these winds are going to be howling tonight and the seas are going to be rough and loud. And so, yeah, were just kind of sitting here watching and waiting. Thats all you can do in these situations. But i worked in miami for three years tracking tropical systems and i know that things can change on a dime. Thank you very much. Were not going to prepare for anything except just get ready and hold on tight. All right. Thank you very much. Of course, we will be checking in with you. And stay safe. Mother nature also hit hawaii with an earthquake this morning. The 4. 5 magnitude quake was centered on the northern tip of the big island a few miles from waimea. It hit 6 36 hawaii time. Moderate quakes are not uncommon for hawaii. No one was hurt in this one and there were no reports of significant damage. Those very few physicians that may have abused a drug at the time that harm was done. Reporter dr. Tanya is an ob gyn who opposes the measure. All that its going to do is increase our costs and decrease access. Reporter she says the proposition which would also raise the cap on damages in malpractice cases will drive doctors to other states. If you raise the cap from 250,000 to 1. 2348 you will bankrupt the entire system. Reporter prop 46 aims to put a stop to socalled dr. Shopping when people go to multiple doctors looking for painkillers. Now, opponents say they would have to check a database thats just isnt ready and thats all part of the plan that they say will just cost too much for patients. Recording live in redwood city, Michelle Roberts, nbc bay area news. As michelle just mentioned, another key aspect is the creation of the new patient database to help prevent the practice of doctor shopping, when a patient going from doctor to doctor trying to get multiple prescriptions for painkillers. Bob and car min lost their children when a drunk driver, a nanny, high on prescription pill, drove her car on to a danville sidewalk and hit those children. New revelations in the corruption against suspended state senator leland yee. Defense attorneys revealed an undercover agent was pulled from this investigation for alleged financial misconduct. Well have more on that later, but right now special report from nbc and brian williams. Since the last combat troops pulled out of there, of course, a decade ago we had about 145,000 soldiers there. And, of course, spent over 2 trillion to invade iraq and then fight sustained combat there. But just tonight a humanitarian mission to drop food and supplies to about 40,000 or so religious minorities who have been on the run by this rebel group called isis. Heavily armed, highly motivated, and galloping across iraq with little or no resistance. The president approaching the lectern now to discuss the mission. Good evening. Today i authorized two operations in iraq. Targeted air strikes to protect our american personnel and a humanitarian effort to help save thousands of iraqi civilians who are trapped on a mountain without food and water and facing almost certain death. Let me explain the actions were taking and why. First, i said in june as the terrorist group isil began advance across iraq the United States would be prepared to take targeted military action in iraq if and when we determined the situation required it. In recent days the terrorists have continued to move across iraq and have neared the city of irbil where american diplomats and i have sillians serve in our consulate and American Military personnel advise iraqi forces. To stop the advance on irbil i directed our military to take targeted strikes against isil convoys should they move toward the city. We intend to stay vigilant and take action if thesist tr forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in iraq. Including our consulate in irbil and our embassy in baghdad. Were also providing urgent assistance to Iraqi Government and Kurdish Forces so they can foreeffectively wage the fight against isil. Second, at the request of the Iraqi Government, we have begun operations to help save iraqi civilians stranded on the mountain. As, i sil marched across iraq it raged a Ruthless Campaign against iraqis and these terrorists have been specially barbaric against religious minorities including christian and a small and an shenlt sect. Countless iraqis have been displaced and chilling reports describe isil militants rounding up families, conducting mass executions and enslaving the women. In recent days the women, men, and children from the area of sinjar have fled for their lives and nous thousands are hiding high up on the mountain with little but the clothing on their backs. Theyre without food. Theyre without water. People are starving. Children are dying of thirst. Meanwhile, isil forces below have called for the systemic destruction of the entire people which would constitute genocide. So these innocent families are faced with horrible choice, descend the mountain and be spotted or stay and slowly die of thirst and hunger. Ive said before the United States cannot and should not intervene every time theres a crisis in the world. So let me be clear about why we should act and act now. When we face a situation like that on the mountain and innocent people facing the prospect of violence on a horrific scale, when we have a mandate to help, in this case a request from the Iraqi Government, and when we have the unique capabilities to help avert a massacre, then i believe the United States of america cannot turn a blind eye. We can act carefully and responsibly to prevent a potential act of genocide. Thats what were doing on the mountain. Therefore authorized targeted air strikes if necessary to help forces in iraq as they fight to break the siege and protect the civilians trapped there. American aircraft have begun conducting humanitarian airdrops of food and water to help these desperate men, women, and children survive. Earlier this week one iraqi in the area cried to the world, there is no one coming to help. Well, today america is coming to help. Were also consulting with other countries and United Nations who have called for action to address this humanitarian crisis. I know that many of you are rightly concerned about any American Military action in iraq, even limited strikes like these. I understand that. I ran for office in part to end the war in iraq and welcome our troops home. Thats what weve done. As commander in chief i will not allow the United States to be dragged into fighting another war in iraq. And so even as we support iraqis as they take the fight to these terrorists, american combat troops will not be returning to fight in iraq. There is no American Military solution to the larger crisis in iraq. The only lasting solution is reconciliation among iraqi communities and stronger Iraqi Security forces. However, we can and should support moderate forces who can bring stability to iraq. So even as we carry out these two missions, we will continue to pursue a broader strategy that empowers iraqis to confront this crisis. Iraqi leaders need to come together and for a new government for the interest of the new iraqis and fight back against the threats like isil. Iraqi named a new president , new speaker of parliament and are seeking a new prime minister. This is the progress that needs to continue in order to reverse the momentum of terrorists who prey on iraqs divisions. Once iraq has a new government, the United States will work with it and other countries in the region to provide increased support to humanitarian crisis and counter terrorism. None of them have an interest in this terrible suffering or instability. We will continue to work with our friends and allies to help refugees to get the shelter and water they desperately need and help iraqis push back against isil. Several hundred american advisers i ordered to iraq will continue to assess what more we can do to help train, advise, and support iraqi forces going forward. And just as i consulted congress on the decisions i made today we will continue to do so going forward. My fellow americans, the world is confronted by many challenges and while america has never been able to right every wrong, america has made the world a more secure and prosperous place. Our leadership is necessary to underwrite the Global Security and prosperity that our children and grandchildren will depend on. We do so by adhering to a set of core principles. We do whatever is necessary to protect our people. We support our allies when theyre in danger. We lead coalitions of countries to uphold international norms. We strive to stay true to the fundamental values, the desire to live with basic freedom and dignity that is common to human beings wherever they are. Thats why people all over the world look to the United States of america to lead. Thats why we do. Let me close by assuring you that there is no decision that i take more seriously than the use of military force. Over the last several years we have brought the vast majority of our troops home from iraq and afghanistan, and i have been careful to resist calls to turn time and again to our military because america has other tools in our arsenal than our military. We can also lead with the power of our diplomacy, our economy, and our ideals. But when the lives of american citizens are at risk, we will take action. Thats my responsibility as commander in chief. When many thousands of innocent civilians are face with the danger of being wiped out, we have the capacity to do something about it, we will take action. That is our responsibility as americans. Thats a hallmark of American Leadership. Thats who we are. So tonight we give thanks to our men and women in uniform, especially our brave pilots and crews over iraq who are protecting our fellow americans and saving the lives of so many men, women, and children that they will never meet. They represent American Leadership at its best. As a nation, we should be proud of them and of our countrys enduring commitment to uphold our own security and the dignity of our fellow human beings. God bless our armed forces and god bless the United States of america. The president from the state dining room today in the white house. Just a couple of points of information here. You heard him refer to the group isil, isil, its the same group and we and other organizations have been calling isis. Just a different acronym to describe the same thing. Number two, you will hear him say he authorized two military missions in iraq tonight. Number one, the dropping of humanitarian supplies. Number two, military mission if called for. We dont have any evidence that a shot was fired in anger tonight. We do know that the humanitarian supplies were dropped but they have to be low and slow over their target. Thats why they needed military cover. To our chief correspondent Richard Engel we go in tel aviv. You lived and worked in baghdad covering this war for the better part of ten years. It was a signal Foreign Policy promise of barack obama to get american involvement out of iraq and now the circumstances in iraq draw america, at least this air mission, back in. This is actually the second time we in recent months are getting drawn deeper into iraq. In june as this militant group isis started marching toward baghdad and it looked like it was going to take baghdad, remember the president came out and said we are sending military advisers and said that extra Security Forces would be sent to the u. S. Embassy. It stopped the groups march on baghdad but what did the group do . It started marching toward the city of irbil and marched toward these minority populations driving tens of thousands of people up into the mountains where they are starving. So now a humanitarian Relief Mission and possible hair strikes to prevent the militanting from getting to irbil and prevent the militants from getting up that mountain. With each passing month the u. S. Is trying to contain this militant group and finding itself more involved in iraq. Our chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel tonight. To repeat, there are a small number of americans, military advisers, and consulate staff in the city of irbil. The president certainly indicated tonight the u. S. Military would make a stand should they be threatened with any immediate danger from this group called isis. We will be returning you now to nbc programming with the exception of those along the west coast where were just Getting Started with their edition of nbc nightly news. For our team in washington, new york, and elsewhere, im brian williams, nbc news. We have been watching a special report by brian williams. And the statement from the president from the white house about two operations happening now in iraq. Of course, we will have complete coverage for you and well move the story forward tonight at 11 00. Well have more local news right after the break. Stay with us. You are used to hearing this phrase from officials and politicians, main street is suffering and we need to do something about it. But now is wall street worried about income inequality, too . Governor jerry down says yes and his policies are just the solution. In tonights reality check we fact check that wall street is on his side. The Credit Agency Standard Poors is a wall street institution at its warning people that words income and equality might drag down our entire economy. Are they pointing to jerry browns policies as a much needed antidote . That claim could be a stretch. Californias growing gap between the uber rich and everybody else is the talk of state politics these days. Where am i going to get my next meal . I have to pinch pennies to make sure i have enough for breakfast or lunch. Reporter he spent a week homeless in fresno recently to shine a light on state poverty. The man whose office he seeks, governor jerry brown, talks about the inequality of opportunity. Concentrating on policies toward taxation, wage hike, and education. The people of California Care about their kids, they care about schools, they care about the future. Reporter but recently did he fumble his facts . Brandishing a sparkling new report from standard and poors. Governor brown declared to a group of teachers and School Employees the following. I think now, we have official approval of a progressive or egalitarian policies coming right out of wall street. So maybe wall street might catch up with main street if they keep studying the facts. Reporter browns progressive policies include his prop 30 initiative which taxes the rich for school funds. In a statewide push to raise the minimum wage. Is that what this report is suggesting, these types of methods to narrow inequality . No. While the report says raising the federal minimum wage could bring hundreds of thousands above the poverty line, it also cautions this, quote, raising the minimum wage is not without negative consequences. Reduced labor demands resulting from higher wages could reduce potential hires. And that whole taxing the rich thing. The s p reports, quote, any clearheaded consideration of these options must recognize that heavy taxation solely to reduce wage inequality could do more damage than good. So while brown correctly claims this report is waving a red flag over the haves and havenots, it is not stamping his quote, egalitarian policies. Reality is this. S p says education or unequal access to it is the root of the problem. It says over the next five years if the American Workforce completes just one more year of schooling, it would add theoretically more than 500 billion to our economy. And to governor browns credit he has created a new formula to boost funding to poor schools. But the report does not say brown discovered the cure to all that ails our unequal society. Im sam brock, thats todays reality check. Thank you, sam. Jeff says its getting warmer and when jeff says its getting warmer we know it is getting warmer. Certainly definitely not going to see triple digits tomorrow. Good news for those of you back across the interior valleys. Theres going to be fog on the coastline. So wide spread range of temperatures. Well break it down for you, plus the latest on the two hurricanes in hawaii in a few minutes. A bizarre legal debate involving a monkey and her selfie is burning up the internet tonight. Heres a photo of a crested black monkey in indo neisha. The dispute, who took the photo. Technically, the monkey did. Photography david slater set his camera back in 2011 but the female grabbed the camera. Wick i can media used the photo. Since he didnt take the picture he doesnt have the right and so its in the public domain. He said its his camera and he rotated and cropped the photo. The monkey has not weighed in on the fight yet. Rchltsz were going to talk about iselle because its going to make landfall in a few hours in hawaii. Lets check in with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Theres been so many things happening between iselle and julio that for timing of the two different storms.
